This is not a review about their food even though for us it was less than ok. Yesterday my husband and I placed an order to go in person. We used our cc card and hit "skip" for the tip. When asked, my husband told him he didn't want a receipt. As we sat waiting for our order I noticed the register showed a paid amount of $7 more than the order cost. We asked him about it, and he started stammering and said the amount is different because of the tip. So obviously he added an unapproved 20% tip to the order. I said to him, "so, if people don't ask for a receipt you automatically decided to add the maximum tip?" He agreed to refund the tip. Needless to say, we were both disgusted and very disappointed. We've had our fair share of Mexican food at taco shops in San Diego, and specifically in Rancho Penasquitos and Rodrigo's Taco Shop was by far the worst food we've had. We ordered a burrito with just carne asada and rice (we got a burrito with rice and beans, and we charged extra and it was fairly small), then we ordered 5 chicken taquitos, and they were hard as a rock. We also got a side of beans which were just flavorless - our 3 year old that LOVES refried beans said they were icky. I don't recommend this spot. Super disappointed in this place especially with all the reviews. We've been here twice now and the first time we thought maybe it was just an accident but when we had received our carne asada fries it had barely any meat and nothing really in the box. We had ordered 3 orders and one of them was Plain meat and cheese and literally my husband was still hungry after eating it. We spent $60.00 for all of us to still be hungry. The taste is there but the portions are a joke and you can tell they add enough so you can't see the bottom of the box but that is it. After the second attempt was the same we will not be coming back. Hopefully they change this for other customers because charging $16 for an order and opening an empty box was ridiculous. Today I ordered a carne asada burrito (I actually meant to order a California, but that was my bad, not theirs!) The carne was super tender and this made me happy. It was also plentiful! I added some sour cream I had at home and some shredded cheese I had at home to it. I used their green salsa which was flavorful on it as well. I also ordered three rolled tacos. The meat was flavorful and tender. The shell was a tad chewy. Not their fault. This wouldn't have happened if I had ordered from the restaurant (I'm guessing). Lastly I ordered a side of rice. The rice was okay. A tad bland, but it was cooked perfectly. I ordered from grub hub, and speed of service was efficient. I cannot speak to the ambience of the restaurant since I was there. Not thrilled with this - first off asked for no sour cream on the pick up order and it still had sour cream, second the chimichanga was filled with a ton of peppers and not just chicken which was a little weird too. Third, food was just really overly salty (got a big order and others complained of this on their meals too.) So I think we will definitely be skipping this place next time. read more

Rodrigo's Taco Shop is a small taco shop located on carmel mountain road across from Stater Bros and the 24 Hour gym. Considering how small it is, it has pleasant food that is prepared pretty quickly. If you want a quick bite around the area and crave Mexican food, Rodrigo's is not a bad option. However, I do think there are tons of other taco shops which top this place which is why I give it 3 stars. I got the carne asada plate here which gave a lot of food that was extremely filling! It had carne asada, baked beans, rice, quac, and tortillas. Great after-gym food for me. The carne asada here was cooked well, but was on the drier side for me and didn't have as nice grilling on the outside. However, the meat was still pretty good paired with the baked beans and everything else when you put it together. The cashier at the front (I'm assuming was the manager because it was only a cashier and few cooks in the back) joined in on our conversations once when we were cracking jokes! Very nice and lively manager. Considering I'm comparing with other Mexican food places in SD, I give this place 3 stars as it is still really good for quick food-- and 3 stars in my book is still good. read more

Been a long time since I darkened the door at this classic spot. A buddy was in town and we dropped by on 10/29/22. Rodrigo was happy to see me, he's such a good dude. I ordered a carne asada burrito because Rodrigo makes THE BEST carne asada burritos BUT he made me get the adobada burrito. Mmm. Okay. Let's do it. I do love adobada. Sat outside. A word about the atmosphere. Some dude drove up, got out of his car in just a towel to get his food. It was such a quick short thing but it was hilarious. People were like 'WTF?' Some guy came over to me and said 'did I really just see a guy in a towel?' This is a place where surfers cruise in hungry after a long day in the water, so you're talking dripping wet boardshorts and sandy feet. Very casual vibe, nothing fancy. Just awesome food and attentive service from Rodrigo! Anyway our food comes out. My buddy couldn't choose between adobada and carne asada so he got two tacos, one of each. (More on that in a moment.) My burrito was awesome. So glad Rodrigo laid down the law. My buddy wolfed down his carne asada taco but he was full (it was a substantial taco) and saved the adobada for later. Later that night we're drinking beers and I'm starving. I crack the fridge open and man did that adobada taco look and smell good. I was so tempted to scarf it down but that would have been a dick move so I just took a small bite! (Don't tell anyone) So to review. Food isn't the best the flavor water taste weird and the food really isn't the best at all bathrooms are nasty and the ice smells

My brother had ordered online and even called to make sure our order was right. It was repeated back to him and the person who answered was being rude to him and seemed irritated. Not only did they forget to put sour cream on his fries, but I specifically had him call to make sure the burrito only had meat, cheese and guac. I'm picky when it comes to certain seasonings/herbs on my food, hence I hate pico and prefer just meat, cheese and guac. I also paid for our meal, which is why I'm so upset. I had been waiting for that burrito for four hours (my brother ordered it at his work and came home with it later), just for me to check it and it only had meat and pico on it. No cheese, no guac, just a couple bits of meat and pico. We've had problems in the past and in all honesty, screw this place. It's overrated, their guac tastes like store-brand guac and they don't mention all the things that's in their food. I'd much prefer Don Rios over them any day. This is our go-to neighborhood option for Mexican take out. Staff is always super friendly. As with most Mexican places, they are known for certain items. Their chicken soup stands out amongst other places. The green salsa is amazing. Their chicken tacos (cripsy) are the star along with their shrimp burritos. Very misleading and dishonest restaurant. We placed an online order for pick up around 8pm since their hours say they close at 9pm. We got the order confirmation and got charged for our food and even got the notification it was ready for pickup. But when we got to the location to pick up the food at around 8:20, THE PLACE WAS CLOSED. When I tried to ask the guy locking up the shop, he told me they are closed and don't have our order. Why advertise you close at nine when you close everything down and lock up 40 min early? And don't tell me you didn't get our order since it all went through on our end and we got charged?? My husband and I got home with our food and discovered mold in the carrots (which they charge $5 for lol). We called the shop and they said to come back for a refund, so we did.
