P.S. The following is an update to my previous review: The electrical problem was caused by a faulty wire that transfers the electrical current from the alternator to the battery. As many reviewers noted before, Rod is a good mechanic but he will overcharge you and eventually will rip you off. My LA office is close to Rod's shop, and so I worked with him several times, spending close to $5K with him on my old VW. On the last job, he replaced the ignition system -- all except for the coils, which makes no sense! He apologized and promised to replace them coils the next time for no extra labor charge. Well... three months later, the engine light goes on. I came in, and --- you guessed right -- he wanted $150 labor to replace the coils. I am done with him. Pricy is one thing. I will start with that review that i recommended to this place by the owner friend that he knows for years. I took my car in 2009 Lexus salvage car for a noise that making all the time he took the car in told me to leave it and he will check . The flowing day he called told me you have bad breaks bad rotors oil leak water leak he estimate about $2000 and nothing about the noise he didn't mention nothing .he called me to tell me about bushing that need to replace and want to charge me another $800 told him no its not worth it cause we getting almost $3000 i paid for the car $6000 .so i came to pick up the car i wanted to pay with my credit card he's secretary told me you can do Zelle i said ok. After she charged me then he's secretary called ROD the owner came out from he's office and told me this car really bad not worth it .and he told me that what trigger me the noise you complain about it what originally i came its the ABS pump its about to go bad and it will coast $3000. I told why u didn't told me that from day one when you inspected the car ? Why now after i pay you for what I didn't ask but still agree .he told me just sale your car i was shocked and BTW my car had half tank of gas when i picked my car it was on the fume zero zero gas so guys think well and be smart don't take your car to this scammer and never ever pay in ZELLE. To this transaction shame shame on you and i am sure he lost he's friend for what he did to me and maybe other as well no wonder he don't have 5 stars read more

My '15 GL350 was constantly going into limp mode. I'd start the engine, have power, then all of of a sudden, couldn't accelerate. Driving on the freeway, uphill, you'd slow down, even though the gas was being pressed down ALL. THE. WAY... It was dangerous. Took it to one well respected and highly recommended mechanic. He looked at the codes and said it was probably the turbo. Told me to sell the car. Not worth keeping because turbos are expensive to fix. He knew a guy who exclusively worked on European diesels but retired last year. Told him the codes, my symptoms. He also confirmed it was the turbo. He actually had a diesel ML (same engine) and had the exact same problem. He replaced the turbo and couldn't get it to run the way it was supposed to. The guy was a mechanic specializing in diesels. He also said to get rid of the car. Undeterred, I went to Rod's. Told him my turbo needed to be replaced. He quoted me an awesome price (around $2,000). Like half of what I was told by the other 2 guys. He said he stands behind his work and gives a one year warranty or something. So I took it in. He then asks me what my symptoms are. He doesn't just replace the turbo. He examines the car. Then he calls me and says the turbo intake has a vacuum leak, the turbo is fine. He fixes it in one day. Tells me to hurry up and pickup the car. He charges me a third of the original quote. He could have easily just pretended it WAS the turbo, charged me the full amount, and I would be none the wiser. The car drives perfectly. The crew know what they're doing and they're honest. Glad I found him. read more

Rod knows his stuff but will over charge without thinking twice about it. If you can, get a few price quotes before you visit, as to know what you should be charged. Try to keep him honest on the prices, because he wont do it himself. He is an extremely knowledgeable mechanic, but honesty and fair pricing aren't high on his priorities. read more

Is rods a little pricey, yes. Do you ever leave rods without the problem fixed? No. I would much rather pay a little extra and know that my car is in the best possible hands. Not once have I ever had to take my car back. The mechanics I've been dealing with lately it seems my car is always in the shop. I love Rod and his team! Usually when you go to a mechanic you cringe at the mile-long-list of things that they're telling you that you HAVE to do this very second in order for your car to run. When I go to Rods I get a straight up answer of everything that's wrong, what is crucial at the moment, and what needs to be done some time in the future. I never feel pressured or like he's "trying to get over on me". And from looking around at the beautiful classic cars in the lot, I can tell that it's because A) he knows what he's doing (why else would so many people trust him with their cherished and expensive collectables); and B) he's not hurting on work so he doesn't need to squeeze me for every last dime. Every time I go to Rod's the staff is friendly, the work is done by when I need it, and best of all - my car is always happy when I get it back!!! I can always tell an immediate difference in the way she drives, even in the most minor work. They do a great job on my BMW and I trust them wholly with high end import cars. Do NOT EVER go to this auto repair shop unless you want to get scammed on your repair and have your car get damages to it while it's being repaired. Please read my story below and you will not want to go hear ever! I brought my car in to get repaired 1 month ago and they first ripped me off on the price, I was upset abut that but then I noticed my car had HUGE scrates on it and dents. My brand new $20,000 restoration that was done only 3 months ago was now ruined. They didn't mention the scrates, when I showed them they agreed that they caused them and said they would pay for the repair. They lied to me and were very deciteful by trying to get me to use their auto body repair shop who were also scammers. I told Rod that the repair had to be done at my auto body shop being they did the restoreation to my car, he agreed but then said the quote was too high. I then asked for the insurance information and they wouldn't give it to me until I told them it was illegal to not give it to me. He's done a lot of work for me and he's always been considerate and helpful. His pricing is honest and his team does a great job always. It's funny that there only seems to be 5 star ratings or 1 star ratings for this business. I will translate that for you in case it confuses you- The people who give Rod 5 star actually go there and understand what it takes to resolve the issues they have with their vehicles. Rod and his staff are great. I usually don't get much time to talk to the mechanics (they seem friendly, though). Despite this, Rod and the desk staff, Chris, always make sure to fill me in on any details about the repairs. I'm not very knowledgeable about cars and they are always very patient to explain what's being fixed and why. I've always assumed the terrible service and attitude at other shops was part of the experience, and then I found Rod's. I always leave fully confident that the repairs will be reliable. Because they explain the process, I actually feel safer once the work is done. Chris is always very clear when it comes to the bill, outlining anything I don't understand. Bad Experience. Don't bring your car here. They had my little compact car for 2 months. They wouldn't put quotes in writing. Verbally quoted me one price and asked another price when I went to pick it up. Had to bring the car back at least 8 times over 2 months and they never repaired the problem. My car overheated on N. I-405 on Monday. I called Firestone and they wanted to charge me well over $1000+ to fix my car. I called my neighbor to find out where he gets his cars fixed and he suggested Rod's Auto Tech. When I met Rod, he was very kind and listened to my ordeal and he assured me that he would fix my car for way less than Firestone. My car was fixed in 2 days and is running better than when I bought it from a co-worker 2 years ago. I've been taking my (now 16 year old) car to Rod for years. He and his crew are good at seeing problems and even better at fixing them. The first mechanic I've ever used who looked for ways to save me money rather than ways to run up my bill. Super knowledgeable, Rod and his guys work on everything from vintage classics to newer, computerized cars--he buys the expensive computer modules so he can analyze the problems with modern cars like BMWs and Range Rovers. I'm a Car Dealer who works with many different mechanics and service people in the field. I went to get an estimate for fixing my car's sunroof, knowing the estimated price from a Mechanic before (about $180). I purposely asked Rod for an estimate for the repairs and he said "It's gonna be max $200", so I decided to leave my car for repairs with Rod. When I went to pick up the car it wasn't completely fixed, because he didn't take the roof off the car and couldn't tell me which parts were broken. Rod still charged me $200. Now I have to go to another shop to figure out which parts need to be changed in order to make the sunroof work properly. read more

I am so happy. about 4 years ago after our Suzuki came from a repair shop things went wrong: no horn, airbag light on and it was swivel on the road. Even numerous alignments did not help. Rod was a mobile mechanic with an easy going personality, he fixed my Volvo inexpensively and without fuss fifteen years ago (mid-nineties). I had been an auto mechanic for a few years in the late sixties early seventies but did not tell Rod; I do get fooled at times. Rod is also a musician and I felt that he was a humanist and wanted to do the best and was glad to see his shop open so he could take on more responsibility. Sorry about those bad reviews, surely Rod is not perfect, but the shop seems to be thriving. I'd love to talk to Rod about those bad reviews, but time is limited.
