I had my oil changed here. Decently priced, except that a few months later I started leaking oil. My friend took a look at the car, and they had left the screw partially open. It really could have caused major damage to my engine if I hadn't caught it on time. This worried me because my girlfriend also got her clutch changed here. This was about 1 year ago. And now her car broke down, and her new mechanic says there is some kind of leak in the clutch. Awesome. Please do not take your car here. read more

Ever go to pick up your car from the mechanic and decide that you want to pay them more? No? Then you've never been To Rod's. Called 'em up for a quote on installing a strut assembly I purchased online for the front-end of my '05 Dakota V8 2WD. Quote was $160.00! That's 'I'm on a Raman Noodle diet' cheap! Came back 2 days later to get the truck (Thanksgiving having have happened in the interim) and he had filled my (empty) power steering reservoir, cleaned up my battery and FIXED MY DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WINDOW (the window motor is toast so the glass fell into the door; but he made it so it was at least closed)! I'm a do it your self kinda guy but I needed some bearings on a differential removed and new ones installed, and didn't want to buy a tool. so Thinking a well established automotive place would have/ use the proper tools..These guys said they would do it.. no problem rite. Well the my managed to do one of 2 correctly, it seems they damaged the new one in the installation so the put the old one back on and packed it full of grease so it wouldn't fall apart. Really that is just poor workmanship!!! The part is only $10 I would have gladly ran down to the store so it would get done rite. But unfortunately I had to find out once I got back to the garage and cleaned up the excessive amount of grease. These guys are hacks!! My tow truck driver recommended this spot and they seemed pretty nice and reasonable at first, but when i decided not to accept service from them, they slapped me with a $1500 storage fee when it was sitting for a couple of day. I tried to explain everything but they didnt seem reasonable. I didn't appreciate the desk lady threatening me stating that bad things would happen if i didnt pay them. i called the bureau of automotive and they said to check if they had the confirmation invoice and if they didnt, i wouldnt have to pay. When i arrived with them, it seemed like they new what was going on and started to write the invoice down right there and then before anything could happen. im sure they are nice people when it comes to business. But when it came down to it, i didnt like how i was threatened on the phone and then hung up on as well as being pointed at with a cigarette in my face and being told off. read more

I found a great coupon for Rod's for a $27 smog check. This was half the price of the Jeep dealership. I told the mechanic that I had just came from the Jeep dealership and they checked everything out and it was perfect. I just didn't want to pay their inflated fee for a smog check so I took it here. The mechanic took my car, tested it, and declared that because I had just reset the engine that it showed that it didn't pass. He said I needed to drive 50 - 60 miles for it to be able to pass. He then charged me $19 and said that when I came back to retest it I would have to pay again. After talking to two different shops they alerted me that I was ripped off. I was told that before a smog check is even done they plug it into a computer and it right away says that the car had been reset and needs more mileage on it. The technician should have told me right away of this condition, had me drive my car around, and then come back to get retested. This is so shady and a horrible way to do business. It is so shady and it's moves like this that give mechanics a bad name. I emailed the owner so we will see if he responds. this place is a joke. Took it for a tuneup, sure, the price was right, 99 bucks. But 5 months later, had to get it tuned up again because a spark plug was bad. Going to take it elsewhere. First off let me just tell you that i have had 2 engines installed here and they are doing fine other than one of them has a radiator leak that i will not take back there to have fixed and ill explain why. The guy who owns the shop was a friend of a friend, so needless to say i granted my trust to him as being our good/fair mechanic. Little did i know. Several months back I took my vehicle down to him to just have the tires rotated and balanced. While this is being done i receive a phone call from him saying that my tires really just need to be replaced. Being the trust worthy person i am I take his word for it and give him permission to find me some new tires. He then calls me back and tells me he found me a really good deal on some new tires for X amount of money. I just say ok thanks because i trust the guy. However i tell my wife about this and she asked why they were so expensive and that i should shop around. Well at first i was reluctant to do so because of my trust in him but i did shop around and the very first place i called quoted me just shy of $100 less than he had quoted me. His quote was also a tax free quote because i was paying cash. The quote i got from discount tires was with tax and not including a 10% discount i had as well. Now, i have already paid him for the work to be completed. I get a phone call from his front desk lady that the car is ready for pickup, though after hours and she is the only person there when i arrive to pick it up. The next morning i get a phone call from him saying that the tires were never balanced. His clerk was not informed and I have to find, my time, wear and tear, and gas to drive 20 minutes one way to him to drop it off again. In doing so once i arrived there to drop it off again i actually asked him why it cost so much more and if i could just get an understanding to the break down in the cost. He doesn't have an explanation for it and starts being slightly defensive and acting kind of weird actually. I assure him that the job is already paid for and that i was only curious. At this point it was around noon and all that needed to be done was for the tires to be balanced. So I leave the car there and I get a phone call the next morn around 1000 for pick up. I show up to learn that he assumed from my questioning the price, that i meant to put the old tires back on and give me a refund. No where in our previous conversation did i even come close to mentioning anything that even sounded of the sort, in fact, i made it a point for him to understand I wasn't mad and that I have already paid for the work. I mean he did install 2 engines for me and they are good except for the radiator leak. I am quite upset with him for this and ask him how as a business owner he could just make these random assumptions without asking me directly. He said "I just thought that is what you wanted". He then ask if i wanted a refund, i said what choice do i have. I ask him to compensate me for my multiple trips for gas on 2 vehicles in which he declined. He even asked if i wanted the new tires back on as if I am going to wait for this to happen, again! WTF came to mind more than once. So, not only did i have to take my car home for the 2nd time, this time with the old tires, but he didn't even balance them. If it weren't for my wife i would have taken him to small claims court just for the inconvenience and time he cost/lost me, just to return the favor. The reason we know is because there were zip ties that we put on that held the distributor cap which were the exact zip ties that were seen when we picked up the vehicle. So, if I could I wouldn't give this business NO STAR ...because trying to charge for services not being provided sounds like some shady mechanics. We will never take our vehicle back. read more

I took in my Lexus to Rod's because the norm height light was blinking. I dropped it off for a $75 diagnostic test thinking I had some major problem with my air suspension system which worried me. After about an hour after I dropped it off, I got a phone call from Rod's telling me that my car was completely fine and they told me that the problem was that the previous mechanic who fixed my power antenna a few days prior forgot to turn back on the relay box in the trunk which was causing the norm light to blink. They said their would be no charge. I was very happy and pleased with their honesty. It's good to know that they're are still good honest people out there still. They could have easily ripped me off or charged me a $75 dollar diagnostic fee but didn't. This shows how good their employees are that work here. They definitely have a new customer that will return. Would highly recommend this shop to anybody who needs car repair. read more

yup, i got no service at this place. first was a failed smog. then cap repair never done. car sat for a month without anything done. i now have to fight for my initial smog money back. the next shop wants to start from scratch, therfore the initial smog doesnt count. c.a.p. rules. so far they have smog money, diagnostic money and a dusty car that was never worked on. they have lost their ability to smog and repair under c.a.p. and b.a.r. im going to get the car now, and trash them verbally throughout town. i am a disabled and did not deserve this . as i can see this is a second bad review within a month. read more

Broke down on the side of the road. Tow truck driver recommended Rod's Automotive, ok. Seemed really nice and had the car done in 4 hours. Great. It was the electronic throttle body. Broke down 2 weeks later. Called Rod frustrated, very rude. When I questioned him and told him what happened he commented "Am I mumbling? Bring it back here. If same problem Infix for free." No Rod we are not bringing it back to the heart of El Cajon from Chula Vista and paying an extra towing fee because it's more miles than our towing service allows. Plus we don't trust you anymore. 14 days guy! Went to Sears and brought Rod's receipt. They did the exact same thing and told us the part Rod fixed didn't work at all and the part he said he cleaned was still dirty. So we have now paid double for something Rod told us he supposedly fixed. I really think the tow truck driving and Rod are working together. Will be notifying our roadside assistance company to let them know. Really want our money back or at least half. Will have to fight Rod for it. Very frustrating. Rod basically stole $534 from us. read more

Wonderful service. I needed a smog check on my SUV. I called them up and was told it would be 35 for the entire smog check including the certificate. That's a very good price for a big SUV. I drove over and got right in with no wait. I spoke with the owner for the 15-20 minutes or so I was waiting. He is a very nice down-to-earth family man and was very sweet and we talked about a myriad of subjects including the sad lack of decent people in the world. My truck passed, the mechanic let me know about a possible coolant leak and told me to keep an eye on that. I was so impressed with how I was treated there. As a woman I have gone to shops with men that act like pigs and assume I know nothing about cars and try to price gouge me. To the person telling people to go to Rose automotive across the street: I suggest you don't. They destroyed my fuel tank and gave me some other cars fuel cap when I got my truck back from being serviced there AND they destroyed my heater as well while they were playing around in there. I wish 4.75 stars was an option, this shop is the ONLY place I'll take my car to! Jennifer (front desk/office manager) is a smart cookie and super nice! She knows her stuff and is more than willing to help you, in anyway she can, to understand the issue, what is necessary and what is optional. She takes me under the hood, draws me diagrams and answers all my questions. She will work with you on parts and labor, if it is within her scope to do so. I feel she keeps the customers best interest truly at heart! Robert, the mechanic is equally great and this shop's duo team has won my loyalty time and time again. They've even fixed issues other shops have created. I don't take my car anywhere else anymore, not even for an oil change! Only reason I remove a star is because half is not an option (I'd rather have dinged way smaller).... I'm just not a big fan of the actual owner, he's not a "people person" and the ONE rare occasion I had to deal with him directly, he actually attempted to have me sign a blank estimate. He knew I was NOT pleased with that and had Jennifer call me to assure me I'd deal with her directly as usual from now on and apologized for the unnecessary alarm. He didn't know she already gave me an estimate, but I still felt the request was unacceptable with no figures or numbers on it. read more

No stars... Took my truck in for a valve job and after 17,000 miles later the vehicle requires another valve job on the same cylinder with burnt exhaust valve. Mechanic stated that it wasn't the valves but faulty PCV valve and failing EGR valve. Took to another mechanic and found 30% bypass on #6 cylinder exhaust valve. I wouldn't let them work on my lawnmower. read more
