First time dining at Rod's, and we absolutely loved our experience! Our waitress was so much fun, attentive, and incredibly helpful with recommendations. We ordered a few dishes to share, including the shrimp appetizer and the summer burrata, and everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. We ended up sitting outside because the wait for indoor seating was over an hour and a half, but the outdoor patio was lovely and made for a great evening. If you're hoping to sit inside, I definitely recommend making a reservation in advance. Fantastic food, excellent service, and an overall wonderful experience. We'll definitely be back! read more

Celebrated my birthday at Rod's Tavern with family. We arrived early and were seated immediately outside, which was perfect for enjoying the beautiful summer weather. It quickly got packed though so get there early. The Summer Burrata was fresh and delicious, although it's better for 2 people, not made for sharing well. The Volcano Shrimp had great flavor with the perfect sweet and spicy kick, but the presentation could use a little more creativity- there wasn't even a bed of greens under it. Our entrées were great. The special Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb was tender and flavorful, the Coconut-Crusted Halibut was fresh and perfectly balanced, and the Broiled Crab Cakes were a standout, packed with jumbo lump crab and virtually no filler. The Pineapple Coconut Spritz was refreshing and tropical, and the Golden Hour cocktail was a unique bourbon and limoncello combination that was surprisingly delicious. We come here often and enjoy the outside bar and the pretzel sticks. We've also had the crab cake, which is decent. Last night we decided to venture outside of our comfort zone and order the happy hour menu shrimp cocktail ( 4 warm soggy shrimp ), burrata vodka sauce flatbread and the cheeseburger sliders. The sliders were ok, the flatbread was unbelievably disappointing... think burnt paper-like crust topped with a layer of vodka sauce and watery burrata. Beer and wine are on point. Rod's Tavern is a local Sea Girt favorite, but I somehow missed it in all of my summers visiting the Jersey Shore. Their daily happy hour menu offered from 12-5 PM (*at the bar) includes shrimp cocktail, coconut shrimp, Bavarian pretzels, fried pickles, cheeseburger and pulled pork sliders, French onion Soup, among other bites. Their drinks, like Milagro Margaritas and Espresso Martinis, are just as solid. When we visited on a weekday night after Labor Day, almost all of the crowd were 55+, so I can't speak to what it's like during peak season, but would be likely to return anytime. read more

First, service was great and always has been. Renovations brightened the place up. I've been there twice since Chef's International took over and the food was awful. Used to be the best reuben sandwich ever and yesterday it was inedible. Took most of it home to try to fix it and reheat and it went right in the trash. Same with the prior trip with the French DIp. I've been going to Rod's for over 40 years with no complaints but will not go back. Friends I went with felt the same way and they have gone there as long as I have. read more

Enjoyed a mid afternoon snack on the covered front deck which looks onto an attractive street lined with shops. We ordered two plates of fried oysters (appetizer portions) and some fries. Very good quality, nicely prepared and not at all greasy. Service was quick and attentive. Would go again and sample more of the menu. read more

My husband and I go there often. We went last night for a last minute dinner. Our server was great. Meal, not so much! I asked for a slight change on my sandwich order. Our server told us she did not speak Spanish and the chef is Spanish. No guarantees on my request! What!!?? Well, my request was not granted. No one could communicate with the chef??!! This used to be my go to place for 40 years before it was sold. Renovations are great and I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt on food - but now I give up. I ordered a turkey club for pick up and it was just gross. I threw it out. Bread was mushy even though I asked for toast - bacon was undercooked - $20- never again. A mess. No wait on a Wednesday which was nice. Great decor and vibe of the restaurant. Our server was Sophia and she was great. Very friendly and helpful. She checked back on us frequently and made sure we were doing well. Wines by the glass menu wasn't amazing and food was solid but nothing stellar. I enjoyed the calamari, the sauce was a little bit spicy for me personally but I'm sensitive to spice so that's just personal preference and no fault of the restaurant. The filet sauce just felt a bit too watery and not much flavor in the mash potatoes. The key lime pie was way too much lime, greatly overpowered the entire dish. Went to Rods for dinner, not my first time. It's always a good time but today was the best. Our server Brian W. made our dinner experience an absolute pleasure. The place was pretty busy but Brian W. made you feel like you were his only table. He was ambitious, he was respectful and very attentive. Stopped in for lunch today. Beautiful place and excellent service. Thought the clam chowder would be good after seeing previous reviews. Sadly it was very thin and watery. Chowder is supposed to be thick and creamy with chunks of potatoes and clams. Please tell the chef. read more

We love Rod's. Great service, friendly team, delicious entrees. We love the front porch "outdoor" dining even when the weather is chilly, the lamps keep it comfortable. Favorites for us are the Cobb Salad with lightly grilled shrimp, Shepherd's Pie, Short Ribs and seafood dishes are outstanding. Nice bar and wine offerings too! read more

First time going here and wasn't impressed I got the Spicy Garlic Shrimp pasta, the shrimp were good quality/decent amount in the dish. But the flavor wasn't good, it was supposed to be in a lemon beurre blanc sauce with garlic and crushed red pepper and aged sherry...It tasted like watered down melted butter, with a lot of crushed red pepper, I didn't see any garlic (maybe they used garlic powder) no hint of aged sherry. I don't think that's worth $25 Also, we were seated on their closed in porch, not warm, no tablecloth and the table was dirty. No complimentary bread basket either. The service was good though, just wish the food was better read more

I hadn't been to Rods in years and never under the new owners. However, my daughter and son-in-law have liked it so we gave it a try when two friends were in town for lunch. I had a hamburger which used to be a staple at Rods and it actually was very good. Another had the fish tacos and loved them. A great meal here. We sat at the bar and Steve was our bartender, he was fabulous. The bar was great with college baseball and hockey on the TVs. Nice, not loud at all, lots of friendly people. The bar was a bit crowded, but our drinks were always full and the food came out hot. This was only our second time here in 3 months but we will be back when in the area. read more

The renovation is beautiful and if you're coming for a couple of drinks with friends it's 4 stars (two bars, decently staffed) but the food isn't very good. Think Fridays or other chain. For example, the Greek salad was soft little colorful but tasteless leaves shaven out of a bag, Cheese crumbles (the cheapest you can get, didn't taste like feta) and diced up cucumbers and winter grade tomatoes. No onion. No olives. No oregano. Sweet "vinaigrette". Not a Greek salad, not worth the time or calories. Other items were similarly disappointing . If you LIKE Applebees add two stars to my review, you'll be happy. It's always packed, so the business model is working. read more

Met five friends for lunch. Seated on the porch Erin our server introduced herself and took our drink order. Three had martinis and they were all excellent made to their specifications. One friend ordered the French Onion soup. He said it lacked taste. Three of us ordered Fish & Chips. The cod was perfectly cooked but the French fries were mushy. We ordered onion rings for the table. Over half were left as everyone said the rings were too doughy. The burger was fine as was the salmon the other two enjoyed. Stopped after going to the Sea Girt lighthouse based on recommendation of the staff. It wasn't crowded and we were greeted quickly. Waitress was friendly and talkative. I had the lobster bisque which was good and the chicken pot pie which was also good. BF had the New England clam chowder which was a bit thin but otherwise good. We had the specials - the Slow-Braised Beef Brisket and the Grilled Salmon. The presentation of both were really great, while the food itself was less than anticipated, especially considering they were "Specials." The taste of both the salmon and brisket was acceptable but nothing to rave about. However, the sides with both specials were excellent. I'd award an extra 1/2 star because of the sides, but Yelp doesn't allow that. The Ambiance was very good, we ate outside on a cold winter day on their heated and sheltered porch area. Had lunch with wife and 2 friends..was quiet off season..service slow and the place was empty. The food was good for 3 out of the four of us. The open face Reuben was made with shaved corned beef..really cheap..basic nothing special. The bar service was slow . Went I rod's for lunch. Now this tavern is nice the outside area with the bar is the best for ambiance. The inside is a little lacking though. Service can be slow at times but always friendly. Rod's is really good food in a great atmosphere. The only reason they got 4 stars out of 5 is because of the little snafu with their waitress completely ignoring the table for 25 minutes but management was kind enough to step in and take care of us after we started to leave. But even after that I will continue to Rod's because they are one of the best in the area. read more
