As other reviews have mentioned, the photos of this hotel are very misleading than what you see on their website. It looks like no one has updated, cleaned or restored anything probably since this place was built. The staff was friendly, except Sofie at the front desk, the only rude person we came across the entire stay. She was aggressive with how she talks and was just plain unpleasant. The rooms: Old. Dirty. and broken. No hot water the first day and maybe luke warm water the rest of the second day. The carpets are DISGUSTING. Stains everywhere. Some stains even look like blood. The sink was cracked and the knobs to the water were LITERALLY falling off. A lot of items in room were "fixed" with duct tape. The ironing board was gross. Bed frame was broken on one of the beds. RUST everywhere and the wallpaper was peeling off. and did we try to complain by dialing 0 like we were told for assistance? No. the phone did not work :) !! Very dissatisfied and will not be coming back again. read more

Pros: very spacious, homey feeling, clean, large comfortable king bed, small outside patio area Cons: pictures from the website show the renovated rooms, we got a much older looking run down room. We got the two bedroom suite. The second bedroom had a very small twin bed, the tv in that room did not work and there was no air conditioning in the room and it was very stuffy. We asked for a pack and play for our baby to sleep in when we reserved the room, we also called in our way to confirm the pack and play would be available and set up in our room. It was not. We arrived late at night with a cranky baby and had to call down to the desk, they said they had to check and "see if they had one". They called back a few minutes later and asked my husband to come down to the lobby to carry it back up himself. They seem to be short staffed (maybe a covid problem?) If staying here, I would just recommend asking to stay in a renovated room those look very nice in the pictures. read more

Within walking distance to Rockefeller Plaza, Grand Central station, Macy's, St. Patrick's Cathedral! There is a Walgreens across the street! Lexington Brass is a restaurant literally a block away and was delicious!! Felt safe the entire stay here! The check in process was extremely easy! They do charge $25.00/ night hotel fee or resort fee that isn't included in the pricing. But I had done enough research and knew about it up front! We stayed during the Christmas season so the prices we higher than normal. All the hotels around also extremely expensive due to the Holidays. I think this hotel was quaint and worth the stay! The room we had was very spacious! Now we have to remember that this is an older hotel so it looks a little worn. Not bad just cosmetic. It was clean and the beds extremely comfortable! It's on a busy street! It's noisy! Even with windows closed, it was loud. I believe every driver honks their horn at least once every block. And New York City picks up trash at night so bring ear plugs! The heater and AC??? Not sure! It was hot even without the heat on. We opened the windows! It was 45 degrees outside. This was the best hotel I have stayed in, in a long time. No it is not fancy, shiny & new BUT it was clean, quiet and very well located in Midtown. I stayed at the Roger Smith for 3 nights on a recent trip to the city. My room did not look like that those bright and airy rooms that are pictured here and on their website. Those must be the renovated ones. I stayed in the older bedrooms which still have ugly wallpaper. Despite the fact that my room was older looking, the room itself was spacious for NYC room standards. The bathroom was a decent size too. I slept pretty well. My only experience with any service was during check in and check out, which were both fine. I did have to call housekeeping once to service my room and they did come. Overall, a pretty good stay with spacious rooms but they look kinda run down if you don't get their renovated rooms. read more

I had a great stay in the Roger Smith Hotel. I personally like vintage furniture or anything related to it so I think this hotel is very vintage and artistic. The room is big compared to NYC hotel room. Especially, I like that they provided the NESPRESSO coffee in the room. I can make espresso in the morning before going to conference. They were very warm too because I put a "don't disturb" sign out there, but they left a note for me to guide me contact them if I ever need any additional towels or stuff. So far I have a good stay, and hope to come back in the future. read more

Went to a very nice mini-Hayden concert up in the penthouse - while a bit warm for 30+ people to pile into, the decor was tasteful and the AC when turned on helped to moderate the room a bit. Accommodations - 2 stars. Service - 3. For $300/night you can find a lot of options even in NYC. I felt like I was visiting a distant relation and they'd put me up in their dated, slightly crumbling guest room. They were so nice I hate to complain and if the room was an insane bargain I would be much more generous about the lack of amenities. This hotel was fantastic! Booked the night before on Expedia - and accidentally made a booking error. Roger Smith was able to work with Expedia to correct my reservation and we checked in around 6pm. I told the concierge (Randy) that this was a special occasion - my parents were moving me into nyc and this was a surprise for them. They stayed here 30 years ago and I wanted to thank them for helping with the rental company, etc. Randy upgraded us to a suite on the 15th floor! The room was exceptional - luxurious king size bed, quaint furniture (dining table, mini kitchen), brand new AC unit, and comfy Queen sofa bed. On our way out, my parents asked the concierge (this time, Manny) if they could purchase a Roger Smith mug. He said he would check. At checkout, he gave us 1 for free! Outstanding customer service, polite and helpful staff, and adorable boutique hotel in Midtown East. Free local yogurt and granola as well! The hotel's website pictures are misleading and tantamount to false advertising. They must have been taken years ago. I have a hard time believing that the recent 5 star reviewers even stepped foot in the hotel. If they did, they weren't on any of the floors that we were and we were on the 11th, 14th, and 6th. The condition the hotel is appalling. Room 1107 was so dismal that we almost didn't stay the first night. We were then shown Rooms 1404 and 602 which were slightly better so because we were exhausted we didn't leave immediately. We were booked for 4 nights, stayed two, and that was two too many. Only one elevator was working, the hotel is terribly rundown, the rooms were filthy and in major disrepair, and the heat and a/c were non-functioning. The bathroom tile was so mildewed that I bought my own cleaning supplies. They don't supply washcloths, only towels and hand towels. We finally checked out two nights early and went next door to the Lexington where we had an amazing experience. The move changed the entire tenor of our NYC visit. The Roger Smith staff was lovely but the entire hotel desperately needs a facelift. I would strongly urge anyone considering the Roger Smith to look elsewhere. We actually called our friends who were supposed to arrive on our last night and told them not to stay at the Roger Smith. They had last stayed there in 2016 and were dismayed to hear about what bad shape it's in now. read more

The only thing great about this place was the location, the staff and maybe the beds for sleeping. The hotel is OLD. It is dated and dirty. The rooms we stayed in had dinghy, dirty carpets. The furniture was scuffed. The bathrooms had hair. The water went out the second day we got there and we were given gallon jugs of water to help flush the toilet and we're told we could shower at the gym next door. One of the rooms we stayed in had cold water which we used to wash ourselves with wash cloths we brought from home. The hotel didn't provide any. When the water came back on the next day, the hot water ran out like sludge till it became clear. It could really be something special if it was tended to and updated. We only stayed because it was too late to back out and find a place for the price we paid. The air conditioner was being held up with duct tape in one room. The website shows new and clean rooms which was not the case for us. Also, the rooftop bar was closed to hotel guests due to "private events" We felt gaslighted and catfished. First off, this review is based on my not having to actually pay for the room, as I was put up for the night by work. That said, I probably would not stay at this hotel if I had to pay for it myself at a rate over $99. Yes, the room was spacious, but that's about the only really good thing. The entrance smelled musty, and looked a bit outdated. Same too with the room decor. Room noise was bad, mainly due to the window AC unit that was sealed with duct tape. We got checked in before 1-1:30 pm, the time we arrived at the hotel . The hotel has green carpeting and too congested looking interior . our room is on 12th floor. No noise . Bed is comfortable and clean . The room is with green wallpaper and very old stained green carpet . we have a small library with books but the furniture are old and stained . The bathroom is old and got marks and bathtub has hair and not clean . The room has a damp smell . overall super duper trashy joint for the price we are paying . I found a great price for the Roger Smith Hotel via Quikbook.com (love that site). I walked in and was greeted with not only fun art but 2 internet connected computers - perfect for an internet junkie like me. My room had a very comfortable bed and a decent amount of space, especially for New York. It was totally comfortable and cozy. I was a little surprised to find that the hotel had a 13th floor and that I was staying on it - I wouldn't say I'm superstitious, but that was a little odd. The staff were friendly and checkin was fast and easy, and I enjoyed my stay. I had to run some errands while there and found Bliss and Sephora nearby as well as Grand Central. This hotel is located near a bunch of other very grand hotels and buildings. They were also very responsive on Twitter (@RShotel). I slept very, very well and would definitely stay here again. Great location, within walking distance of Times Square and other great places. Free passes to New York sports club . Cute roof top bar! Cons: THE AIR CONDITIONING DOES NOT WORK!! We are here in May, with 85-90 temperatures. I think it's at least 80 in our room! First I had the mechanic come up and look at the thermostat, which did not help. Room 910 also has a very loud unit that goes, "RRRRGGH, RERRGGHH, RERRGGH!" So we switched rooms to 1510. Quieter fan, but it's STILL 80 degrees in here. Bottom line: I would recommend staying here in the winter and the cool season. Skip it in the summer. It's hard to sleep in such heat! read more

I usually get booked a swanky suite at the Waldorf or the W, but my most recent trip this past week was on my dime... which means I had to pay for my own hotel stay. Oh helll no would I personally spend $500 a night for 3 consecutive nights Thanksgiving week just for a place to sleep and work. I'm not cheap, but I'd rather buy a new Louis thankyouverymuch. I found the Roger Smith Hotel through Travelocity. Based on the photos I saw from the hotel website, their rooms seemed to offer the most space. A corner desk, actual sitting room, FLOOR SPACE... Anyone knows that your average NYC hotel rooms are tiny tiny. Call me a procrastinator, but I booked my reservations late morning on Monday 11/24/2008. Fast forward some hours on a crappy ride to NY and I checked in later that afternoon! Soon as I walked into my room, I was so pleasantly surprised! Wowie, I can actually roll around on the floor and then some (not that I ever would, but if I wanted to...). This worked out so perfectly for me because I had a lot of people over and we all had room! There was even three of us sleeping on the bed one night with plenty of room in between us. The maid service did wonders each day as I had sort of made a mess on the floor (cutting hair, heh heh... though I did clean up as much as I could) that I tipped them like mad and even left Magnolia cupcakes for them! I requested extra towels twice and got them promptly. We ordered delivery a few times and each and every time the food delivered right to my room with a hotel staff escort. Minus .5 stars because of the tiny bathroom. Not that I care, but it was a bit crowded. The drain hole in the tub was literally a hole. Like a black hole. When Hurricane Sandy struck I was left without power or cell service in my apartment in SoPo (south of power) for a week. As I walked north into midtown, I saw: - dozens of closed Starbucks with people huddled outside for wifi - the Grand Hayatt security force preventing non-guest from entering their huge lobby - people set up with laptops at Duane Reades Very depressing. Then I stumbled upon the Roger Smith Hotel. Their staff was extremely accommodating. They brought out dozens of power strips so everyone could charge their phone. Their free wifi was blazing fast despite the dozens of people on it. They gave out coffee, water and candy for free. They even had $4 beers (unheard of in midtown). If you look up "hospitality" in wikipedia, there should be an image of Roger Smith's staff. Very impressive. read more

Very upset and with a raised voice I asked the night manager to please figure out what it was because it touched my body she told me "do you want me to call a doctor" and when I said I wanted someone to check the water right now she replied "I'm not your servant." I've experienced better hotels but I guess this is what you should expect in a New York Hotel. The staff wasn't very friendly at the desk but yet the staff that will clean your room are very friendly, It would get really humid in the room and it will take the AC awhile for it to get cool. The iron didn't work and I called the front desk for a replacement iron and all they told me was we'll see if we have one or call again tommorow morning. That is what you call lazy customer service. Haha I came to my room after a good nightlife at a lounge in West Village area came to find to Front Desk worker was snoozing on the couch. Another night there was no one in the front desk like the worker was probably in his own little sleep area. What if my card was demagnatized and there was no one to help me? that would be so Inconvenient. Yet since this hotel was fairly at a good price $500 for 4 nights I guess it is what it is. As a california native this was my first NY hotel I know there are better hotels in NY than the Roger Smith Hotel. This hotel is nestled right in midtown east, and right by one of my favorites (The Lexington) so I decided to give them a try, I usually avoid this place because it always looks closed and haunted. The rate was good, so sure. This place is not modern like all the hotels surrounding the area. The front desk attendant was interning and not knowledgeable about the system making me very uncomfortable. The first part of my stay I have $100 cash for my deposit and although I requested a room with a King Size? They have me a double. The next day when I had to renew my room, I was running late and called to let them know I would be coming in shortly. They say not a problem. When I get there the attendant let me know she ran my credit card with OUT my permission or presence. The $100 deposit from the previous day? We agreed would roll to the new reservation Now to the accommodations: The room was UNBEARABLY HOT.. even with the heater off? Super stuffy.. sweated the whole night.. the maids literally get up at the crack of dawn & they're SO LOUD! I got no rest from 8AM-12PM check out. The maid also entered my room without permission (once while I was NAKED) When Expedia asked them about the incident? Their response was I didn't report it. Dude it just happened. Back to my deposit situation, supposedly the deposit was rolled over to the next day, with out my consent or receipt The front desk person was unknowledgeable, so again an unhelpful front desk. I would never stay here, for the price? Hotel @ New York was half the price and definitely more accommodating read more

Update to my review. I still haven't stayed at the RSH, however my parents have. The RSH is active on social networking sites like Twitter, and after I tweeted that my parents were staying there, they responded to make sure they'd had a smooth check-in experience. We arrived to a complimentary bottle of wine, three glasses and a personalized note welcoming us to the RSH with best wishes for my parent's stay in the city. Yet another positive for this hotel. Got a good deal on a hotel room here because it was off-season. Good sized room, free continental breakfast every day, and great location in Midtown near Rockefeller Center, Grand Central, subway stops, etc. Also nice that they don't waste resources by putting new sheets on the bed every day. The only annoying part was that we had to ask to get the radiator/steam heat fixed so it would stop leaking and (we hoped) stop making random loud banging whenever it felt like it - especially when we were sleeping. The leak was fixed, and we fiddled with the thermostat for a bit before we found a setting that was the least likely to cause banging, thankfully. Also, our request for firmer pillows went twice unheeded. My bf and I both highly disliked the extreme softness of even 2 pillows stacked together. Overall, we got a good deal on a pretty nice place, with some personality (they have art installations all around). read more

What a dump! Everything was fine except the building itself. My guess is they're about ready to sell the hotel and won't spend a penny on fixing the place up. The furniture was ok (other than the two flimsy nightstand lamps that looked like they came from KMart for $6.99 each). Bedding was excellent, as were towels. Staff was very friendly, and quick to replace the plastic room keys that didn't work. But the room: Gashes in the walls; a sink faucet that moved a few inches in every direction when I tried to turn it on or off; nail heads that pierced through the thin carpeting and punctured my feet as I walked out of the bathroom. And some gray matter along the edge of the wall in the bathroom that I had no interest in either looking at or touching. The stain in the old carpeting ran the length of the room. The ancient air conditioner in the corner was held together with strips of duct tape, and had a front so filthy I was reluctant to touch it. I really wanted to give a positive review. But whoever processes reservations needs to get their sh*# together. My boss reserved and paid for my room in advance. At checkout, no record of payment. Hmm. So I offer to pay except instead of asking which card I would like to use, he bills my debit card and promptly overdraws my checking account. So, now he has to credit my debit card and charge my other card at a higher room rate. I overhear them say,"They don't take AMEX payments over the phone even with a written signed order." Huh? And travel agents don't have to be at the hotel in person to book a room. My boss is furious because we are a big corporate firm with LOTS of travel. My boss now has to pay for my room for the third time. Meanwhile, l am out $800 and waiting for my credit. Just don't see us staying there again. read more

The food for the event was delicious and I have absolutely no complaints to make. This is a nice reliable value option for those looking for a Midtown hotel. The rooms are clean, nicely sized, comfortable, and quiet (especially considering that my room windows faced Lexington Avenue), but the interior room decor is a bit dated. Carpet in my room looked like it had seen better days (some splotches where carpet cleaning/stain removal had changed the shade) and some of the room furnishings come off as a little too "mix and match" and thrown-together. My bathroom was small, but made good use of the space, fitting in a well appointed tub/shower (no water pressure problems here). Beekman 1802 Mercantile soaps, lotions, and shampoo were nice touches. The hotel offers free internet, but I found it a little too spotty; bring the personal hotspot along if you need to do work in the room. For $100 per night cheaper than nearby spots, these complaints are minor. Otherwise, hotel is low frills, esp. in the fall/winter. No restaurant attached, but there is a small first floor bar (rooftop bar only open in summer). Breakfast is limited to grab & go fruit/yogurt/granola. Service was friendly and accommodated an unannounced late checkout due to a twist in my schedule with understanding and no fee. I will stay here again. read more

We are a 30's-ish couple who stayed in NYC for one night after visiting family in Jersey for a week. I've never actually stayed in the city (remember the family in jersey?) and this was awesome. The room was larger than my friends' apartments. I mean actually large - not "large for the city." Two queen beds, desk, chair, etc..... It had everything I could care about in a hotel room: bed and linens were SUPER comfy (yay pillow top!) although i know it would have been way too soft for, say, my mom. Security seemed good. Shower was hot and good pressure. Coffeemaker in room. Free wifi that was fast and reliable - good enough to watch a movie on the laptop. Don't think there were much for "amenities" but we weren't really looking for anything. Bathroom was pretty spacious, but not much space to put things - very vintage. Clean and neat, but not "perfect" - clearly showed some signs of age. No actual problems, and I find the perfect homogenity of the big chain hotels annoying. Liked the vintage charm of the bookcase of books (we took one and left one), and the old prints on the wall. A/C not so effective, but we don't have one at home, either, so it's not something we're too used to. Opening the windows worked fine, although the construction noise on Lexington was a bit loud. Also can't complain about the tv, because, again, not something we really ever use at home. Location was to die for. A few blocks from everything "tourist," most importantly central park and our broadway show. And grand central station! And a perfectly safe neighborhood to walk all of those places. Didn't eat in the restaurants or really take advantage of anything else. They were very gracious about storing our luggage from about 11 a.m. before our checkin until we came back about 6:30 to check in and change before going back out. Overall a lovely place to rest, if your hotel isn't the point of your stay. Oh, and it's right around the corner from the waldorf-astoria.... check out the bathrooms there! ;) One more FYI, got our room on Priceline and paid damn near nothing. Anyway, I flew back to visit friends at Columbia to announce my return, and my ex was confusingly kind enough to get me a room for my last night in the city. Now, i dont know if he thought I was joking when I said i had zero money, or all he remembered was my shopping habit, but the location did NOT help my pockets! It was extremely peaceful, and the bed was comfy, with a small but CLEAN bathroom. There is an adorable french front desk agent who is clearly delighted with his job and chatting up everyone checking in to the dismay of his boss which put a smile on my face. I wont lie, the one slow elevator makes for awkward rides, especially when your trapped and the guy across from you attempts conversation, but its perfect for those nights your coming in from a night out and a little flirtation is needed to take the edge off. read more

I stayed here for 5 nights at the beginning of July. The location was awesome. We were able to walk all around Manhattan, and it was easy to navigate the subway to get to Yankee Stadium and Brooklyn. The staff were all very friendly and we enjoyed the yogurt in the morning, and visiting the roof top bar in the evening. The room was comfortable for 2 of us and the bed was very comfortable. Great service. Small and quaint room with lots of character. Grand central station and times square nearby. For the price and location you can't beat it! The rooms and other areas could use some updating and general maintenance like painting but it wasn't so bad that I was put off. The roof too bar was nice too. Black wells pub is right down the corner and it is good eating and a nice atmosphere. I recommend this place! Oh, and the bed was super comfy too. read more

Our family of 5 stayed here on a recent vacation to NYC. The staff was wonderful! Rooms are spacious and clean. Our king room with an adjoining king suite had a table, small but adequate kitchen and couch. The sofa bed was quite comfortable according to my 16-year-old daughter. It's s great location for easy access to Gran Central Station and a short walk to Rockefeller Plaza. A little further to Central Park and Times Square but very doable. Our only complaint was the lack of outlets for charging devices. We thought it was a good value and will likely stay there again. We'll just bring an extra power strip to charge our phones. read more
