I really enjoyed our stay at The Michelangelo. If you're looking for ultra-modern and trendy, this probably isn't that. What I loved about it was the classic, old-school New York luxury feel. It's elegant, tasteful and has character, and the beautiful lobby sets the tone as soon as you walk in. And LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! We walked everywhere. Times Square, restaurants, food trucks, nightlife, shopping and plenty to do during the day were all easily accessible. The subway was only about a two-minute walk away, and we even walked to Central Park. We were celebrating our anniversary, and the hotel was kind enough to upgrade us from the Studio King we originally booked to a Junior Suite. The room was VERY spacious, comfortable and beautiful, especially for New York. It was such a thoughtful touch for our anniversary and made our stay feel even more special. If sky-high views are at the top of your list, this may not be the hotel you choose for that experience. Personally, I happily gave up the views for a much larger room, fantastic location and a classy, comfortable hotel. They also have a nice bar/lounge area where you can sit and enjoy a street-level view and some of the energy of the city. The staff was friendly, and I appreciated little touches like the evening turndown service. One thing to know is that because of the more traditional style of the hotel, there aren't USB ports and convenient charging outlets everywhere like you find in newer hotels. I eventually found a USB connection on one of the lamps, so bring your charging blocks. My only disappointment happened when our flight was delayed because of weather and we unexpectedly needed accommodations for two additional nights. The Michelangelo was completely sold out, which I absolutely understood. I just wish the person I spoke with had offered a little guidance toward another nearby hotel. Being away from home and suddenly realizing you may have nowhere to stay is stressful, and even a simple suggestion would have gone a long way. We eventually found another hotel and everything worked out. That experience would not stop me from staying here again. Overall, we had an excellent stay. March 2026 6 months ago my review of The Michelangelo hotel concluded it "A Precious Gem." I added "my deep and longstanding hope is the owners realize the Michelangelo's significance and polish her back to her full glory." Unfortunately time has made apparent its ugly occlusions, revealed fatal flaws, and, indeed, its close proximity to hull crush depth. Less flowery: It is sinking. I must be abundantly clear at the outset: I continue to have the highest esteem for the hard-charging service staff. Their fine work - as I witnessed first hand - literally comes at the expense of breaking their bodies to make up for the lack of staff, poor communication by administration, and the absence of vision of the owners. I joyfully reaffirm the fabulous I Lounge breakfast crew crew: Jimmi, J.C., Juan, Sian (Srry sp). The bartenders of lunch and dinner: Shawn and Luna. My dear comrades at the door: Cesar, Teddy, Nick, & the venerable Gene. At front desk, Valther (Srry! sp) has proved to be the most honest and has been of significant assistance to me, above and beyond. The porters: Edwin, Rajeev, and Henry. Security: Smiley and Shepherd. Here is where things get dreadful, however; namely, the incompetence, negligence, and flim-flamming of the mid-level administrative class. First in line is Hamadi the Front Desk Mgr. Hamadi is the epitome of "three monkeys management" - I see no misdoing by the staff. I hear only complaints about the guests. And I only speak in ways that place the blame on the guest/the aggrieved party. It's a form of rhetoric that immediately changes the subject, or ridiculously turns the burden on the guest. The pièce de résistance is the vacant GM, Marco. My major interaction with him - after staying at the MH for over 2.5 years on and off for large blocks, was catching a glimpse of him from behind as he dashed to the elevator back to his office. But the fish rots from the head down. The final cause/responsibilty for MH sinking is the faceless "Starhotels Collezione ... whose properties are members of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, often alongside memberships in The Leading Hotels of the World and Small Luxury Hotels of the World." Had a really lovely experience here, the room felt sizable and comfortable, everything worked well, and I enjoyed my stay. Front desk and all staff I met were friendly and helpful during check in and check out, when I was storing luggage, and I was also able to access the business center when I needed to make copies and print things. Cesar the doorman especially made me feel welcome, he looked out for me during my stay, and was helpful when I was getting taxis or heading out into the city on foot making sure I was heading off in the right direction. This location is great for walking to pretty much any of the theatres, so many delicious restaurants, very easy to grab a cab as well. This hotel is in an excellent location. Close to Times Square, Broadway and lots of Cafes and Restaurants. We stayed for two nights in the largest suite in the hotel. The space was large and there were two bathrooms. Most everything was nice and clean except for the two couches in the living room area. Both were dirty and stained. The cushions were ripped at every corner. Such a shame especially for the cost of the room. Every staff member we encountered were courteous and helpful. They went out of their way to make sure you were happy. Housekeeping was great and turned down the bed and left a chocolate on our pillows. Although there are curtains and blinds there is no view from any window. You cant tell if it's night or day when you are in the room. Some of the spot lights by the bathroom hallway didn't work. This hotel is in a great location near Broadway shows, Time Square and walking distance to Bergdorf Goodman and all the good shopping. The rooms are well appointed and spacious. Love the chandeliers in the elevator and the doormen are so on the ball and helpful! Took a star off for the housekeeping service. During our 9 day stay it did get better but they forgot towel replacement one day and forgot to leave water bottles a couple times. They also do not have coffee or tea service in the room, which is a miss. Limited toiletries. No lotion or extras, and they did not replace the couple things we did use like a Q-tip (they provided only 1). I was thrilled to see a scale in the bathroom but it did not work and the batteries were not replaced. When we brought some of this to the front desk and asked for some things that were missing, there was no apology for the miss which seems like a basic. The gym is really limited in equipment. Overall I liked the hotel and would hope that some of those housekeeping issues would be addressed. read more

In my ongoing quest for a decent, affordable Theater District option that doesn't feel like a tourist trap, the Michelangelo might just be the answer. It's refreshingly old school in all the right ways - the kind of place that remembers when hotels were about service rather than Instagram moments. The gym actually functions (miracle in NYC hotels), and the food maintains a solid B to B+ across the board. Nothing that'll change your life, but everything executed with competence and care - increasingly rare in Times Square's hospitality wasteland. The service embodies that classic New York efficiency with a heart. They know how to take care of you without the performative friendliness that makes you want to hide in your room. It's that old-school New York thoughtfulness where they actually listen when you speak and remember details from previous interactions (and they recommend GREAT restaurants!) The rooms show their age in places, but it adds character rather than feeling neglected. There's a difference between "worn" and "worn down," and these rooms fall firmly in the charming category. Everything functions, everything's clean, and the space feels like an actual New York hotel room rather than a corporate housing unit. We loved out stay at the Michelangelo Hotel. Lobby had a few TVs showing the World Cup which was nice! Easy check in/check out. Friendly staff. Large rooms compared to other hotels of the same class. Very cozy bed, sheets and pillows. Terry robes in the room, safe in closet as well as large umbrellas for those rainy days. Quieter than other hotels, we have stayed at in the area. Great location. Walkable to shopping (5th Ave) Saks, Tiffany, Tmobile, Apple, LV, Victorias Secret... all the good stores! Walkable to theatre, restaurants, bars...everything your looking for and more! Even a Starbucks a block away, although they did have coffee service in the lobby. We will be back soon! read more

The Michelangelo Hotel NYC I had one of the worst experiences ever in a hotel, and I strongly advise travellers to avoid The Michelangelo Hotel NYC. I booked a fully prepaid reservation for 6 nights (June 30 - July 6, 2025) via eDreams, for 2 adults and 2 children. When we arrived, after a long international flight, the hotel staff told me my reservation was "inactive." I presented all the booking confirmations and invoices, yet they refused to honour it. Even worse, the manager (arrogant and unhelpful) suggested that I book again at almost double the original price, despite the fact that the hotel had available rooms. Meanwhile, my two young children were asleep in the hotel lobby after hours of travel. The staff showed no empathy, no willingness to contact their booking partner (eDreams), and left us entirely on our own. I was forced to find another hotel at the last minute, incurring significant extra costs for a new hotel and taxi transfers. To this day, none of these expenses have been compensated, and I never received an explanation or apology from the hotel. Completely unacceptable, unprofessional, and inhumane treatment. This is not what you expect from a so-called 4-star NYC hotel. read more

What a fantastic experience! My friend and I took a spontaneous trip to New York City--neither of us had spent much time there before, so we were navigating everything as newcomers. After a lot of online research, we chose The Michelangelo based on its glowing reviews and great location. Although we initially found it through a travel website, we decided to call the hotel directly to book, and we're so glad we did--the staff was incredibly gracious and helpful right from the start. The hotel has so much character, which we really appreciated, and everything was impeccably clean. Walter at the front desk went above and beyond to accommodate our request for a corner room on a higher floor. The room itself was spacious, quiet, and the beds were unbelievably comfortable. Every staff member we encountered was kind, helpful, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Rajif and Cesar, the bellmen, were super friendly and offered great tips on navigating the city. Daniel, the concierge, was proactive and approachable--he let us know right away that he could help with everything from finding a great café to booking a show. Kendrick and June at the front desk were equally warm and friendly. Every time we left or returned to the hotel, it felt like we were being greeted by friends. By the end of our stay, it truly felt like we knew everyone--and they knew us. We absolutely loved our trip and can't wait to return to New York. A delightful, quiet elegant hotel located just off of Times Square in an absolute perfect location in New York City. It's amazing stepping away from the hustle and bustle of the streets of New York one block from Times Square and stepping into this gorgeous, Italian inspired classic building. Love the lobby and really enjoyed the room. It was very comfortable, there were a few minor issues but you just can't beat this location and price too. It doesn't carry one of those familiar chain hotel names, but if you're looking for a great room, comfort and price stay here!! One issue I had was canceling a reservation for my friend who was not able to attend. We were not able to reach the hotel either by phone or even by email. We didn't get any replies and no one would answer the phone at the hotel. When we got there they canceled their reservation without any questions on the same night as the reservation. And everyone at the hotel was exceptionally friendly and helpful. It was just trying to get someone on the phone. But I'm going to say that hopefully that was an isolated incident, but I still need to subtract one star for that. Other than that the rest of our stay was great! Very comfortable bed and room. The lobby is gorgeous and they do serve breakfast but it is ala carte. Keep in mind the hotel has a classic Italian architecture and feel, so a lot of the amenities are not modern, contemporary style, more of a classic style. But they all work great and really enjoyed our stay! Also the hotel is north of Times Square on your way to central park. We woke up the next day and walked into central park and had breakfast. I just absolutely love the location so much that I would return just for the location, not to mention the hotel itself. We booked the Michelangelo for four nights while in NY. I really liked the look of the hotel, but the location was the primary reason I booked this hotel. In summary, I really had higher hopes for this location. The lack of service, cleanliness and lack of class from the staff is enough to consider before booking a night at this hotel. The Good: - $10 drink credit per night, per room - Location was great, and a quick walk to Times Square - Noise levels from outside seemed to be contained, beside the bike taxi's with the loudest speakers known to man - The room appeared nice The Bad: - Room service was never available when requested, each time we called room service it rang to voicemail. We ended up having to call the front desk for most things. - Ice bucket is located in the room, without a liner. When we called (as instructed by documentation next to bucket) to ask for ice, they told us to get it ourselves at the ice machine the next floor up - The room had a specific sour aroma, but it was not clear where it was coming from. The Ugly: - The bath tub needs to be cleaned, badly. I could simply wipe down many mold and soap spots with a piece of tissue, and see tons of dirt come off. I keep my own bathroom cleaner than this. To know this is not MY grime makes it even worse. - The shower curtain appears to have been the source of the sour smell. It was easy to tell the curtain was sour, and had not been changed before we arrived - When we attempted to enter the hotel one evening, the bar tender was outside directly in front of the double doors smoking a cigarette. Not only is this rude and disrespectful of others right for clean air, it caused my wife to have a mild asthma attack. Ugh. Not a good experience AT ALL. While the general hotel was clean, the rooms were filthy, exceptionally outdated, lots of general room damage, etc, including stains on the walls, old chipped furniture, filthy AC units, tears in the bedding, and more. While we might be able to tolerate this to a degree, the front end staff, and especially all of the lobby bartenders, were rude and hostile. You add this to the fact that our room was outdated and not well kept, made our stay here pretty miserable. In fact, on several occasions I saw guests walk off in frustration especially over the bartenders and on some occasions the front desk staff. The good? The front door staff were always pleasant, the location is superb, and the rooms are unusually quiet. Checked in tonight 6/9/24 around 7pm. Went out for dinner and came back at 930pm. Room key wasn't working. Called downstairs from phone on 3rd floor near elevators. Rang and rang. Went downstairs to find a line of 4 or 5 people. People in line were upset given slow pace. After I waited my turn and got my replacement key about 15 mins later, I asked Milagros, the lady working the front desk if there was a manager in the back who could have helped her. She said there was a manager in the back. I asked to speak to them. The manager Elizabeth came out and started arguing with me saying there hadn't been a line and that she had cameras. I suggested that arguing with a guest may not be the best approach in this business. read more

In January, my daughter and I spent four nights at the Hotel Michelangelo during a stressful time in her life--performing arts college auditions. After we arrived, her audition for the Juilliard School moved from in-person to zoom on our check-out day. The amazing management team was so supportive, that we were granted a late check-out; the front desk even followed up to see how her audition was going. We had a fantastic room--huge for NYC standards. We especially loved the comfortable king bed, small fridge, and the jacuzzi bathtub was the perfect way to relax sore muscles after walking for miles. We loved eating in the lobby restaurant; the food was excellent, and the wait staff went above and beyond. The front desk staff was super friendly, as was the valet and the doorman. Did I mention the artwork is Exquisite? The location was within walking distance of the Broadway theater district, Rockefeller Central, Central Park, and the subway. Based on some of the reviews, it seems like experience here is a hit or miss. Luckily, I was fairly pleased with my stay. My friends and I stayed here for week trip to NY and the staff were welcoming. Had a little bit of a mix up with which room I had my name under as I had arrived later than my friends but all was resolved. Prior to my arrival, my friends' room did take quite a bit of time to prepare but they were able to accommodate to their needs as it did take quite a bit of time. The hotel itself is a great spot if you're looking to be near Times Square or Broadway. Located near it was also a coffee shop which my friends and I frequented during our week long stay there. The lobby is mostly nice and quiet with comfortable seating and tables, which is a great contrast the bustle once you step outside it's doors. The beds were extremely comfortable and one minor inconvenience was that the ice machine on our level as broken during our stay so we'd have to go to different level each time if we wanted ice. Not a big deal though. Quite a classical hotel but You can tell that hotel has made its efforts in updating it. Overall, pretty good choice and satisfied with the service! read more

This is the second time that I stay at this hotel and honestly it just isn't ready to reopen after Covid. I had hoped that they might renovate during their shutdown but they did nothing to upgrade. There are almost NO services, only breakfast offered in the morning. The one star is for a good theatre location. This hotel is just tired, and in need of renovation. We booked through the hopper app and the front desk said check in was actually at 3pm for that day and considering we booked after midnight I could understand but no offer to exchange or help refund the purchase. Instead my boyfriend said forget it do you have any rooms available right now I'll pay again. The front desk clerk Kendricks said yes we have rooms but I can't sell them because no manager is here. Whaaaat I can't buy a room that's available at a hotel front desk? Isn't that the point of a hotel to sell rooms ? We were forced to pay a 200 dollar Uber home. The folks who are now running the Michelangelo have renewed my faith in capitalism and the kindness of people: Two things you don't usually see associated. Read my earlier reviews of how my honey and I were treated in the past and then read on . . . The Michelangelo totally rocked during our stay in late October. While I grew up on the East Coast, I haven't lived back there for many a decade, having made my home in Colorado. Out here the spaces are grand. (When I used to live in the mountains it was no big deal to drive a hundred miles across the Continental Divide to go out to dinner in Denver). And so are the hotel rooms--grand, that is. You don't travel in mini-elevators up to narrow hallways to make your way into teeny rooms; you know, like you do in the City, unless you pay an arm and a leg (and a kidney or two). There's usually a sweet spot in every market niche. And the sweet spot for spacious hotel rooms in the theater district of NYC is the Michelangelo. No. It's not cheap by any means. But its also a whole bunch less than you can spend at other chi-chi hotels. The people staffing the front of the house were as kind as could be. I think they upgraded us to a junior suite when they found out we were making our way to the other side of the world for a cool reason. And they went out of their way to help us in storing extra luggage and getting packages that had been sent to the hotel to find their way to us. All-in-all a wonderful experience. So with thanks and a promise to return on our next Big Apple adventure (unless some Yelper clues me into a bigger, better, cheaper place:). You can walk anywhere you need to in midtown so easily. There are tons of restaurants, pharmacies, stores, and attractions less than half a mile away in all directions. Well, I accidentally stayed here twice! When my taxi driver dropped me off, I realized, "holy hell", I stayed here this time last year! So subconsciously I must've loved it to have booked it again on a search engine. Lol the lobby and ambience are great The rooms are nice and big. The staff is friendly.
