My Lavazza dopio double bold-ristretto black half-shots, perfectly brewed crema, ceramic cup, and a reflection of our cozy chairs
    Rich S.

Tasty generous breakfast, good coffee at pleasant Roggenart. This morning (Oct 2025) we wanted omelettes and breakfast sandwiches (and pastries) in a relaxed setting, not our usual hectic diner. We had never tried Roggenart before, attracted by their full menu and all-day breakfast. It's a small mostly-regional chain (plus Chicago), named "The Art of Rye" for their love of baking. At 10:30am on a Sunday, we readily found parking in the ample free lot out front. By the way, you enter the lot from westbound US-40 Baltimore National Pike, and Roggenart is along the back to the right. We easily secured seating in the seasonally-decorated bistro among the 40 or so indoor seats, and there are maybe a dozen more seats at outdoor umbrella tables on the side, almost in the woods. Timing is everything because most indoor seats were full by 11am. We took the cozy easy-chairs by the electric fireplace display, and ordered at the counter. We got their freshly-ground coffee, of course, which a server delivered to our table in ceramic cups. We had a smooth, lightly creamy strong $3.80 café au lait coffee (50% coffee, 50% steamed milk, no foam). A pleasant start. I saw they have ristrettos (short-shots) on the menu! That's what I make at home because the first half of an espresso pull has bolder flavors than the second half. I got a $2 no-sugar no-dairy doppio double-ristretto. Very good coffee with a crown of well-brewed crema! Roggenart's ristretto definitely has bold character like the kind of Italian roast that can almost stand up without a cup :-). Not sweet or sour, not bitter. A hint of a graininess in flavor but not in texture. Clearly I am not a coffee-review guru. I like this coffee, and i was surprised / not-surprised when i noticed the label on my cup: Roggenart brews Lavazza brand coffee! That's one of my favorite coffees because it doesnt have the stronger bitterness I sometimes find in espressos from that S-bux franchise. What a nice discovery! We had a $12 stuffed tender veggie omelette, loaded with large mushroom and pepper pieces, with chopped onions, savory spinach, and a light mozzarella topping. Rich and delicious, with flavorful house-baked sourdough toast. And we had their $11 "signature" loaded breakfast sandwich: fluffy tender scrambled eggs and huge bright ripe tomato slices, with creamy ripe Hass avocado slices, enough cheddar, and crispy medium-thin bacon, all on a large light flakey lightly-toasted house-made croissant. Both meals were generous, deliciously crafted, and satisfying. And you can taste that they bake from scratch throughout the day. We took home sweet flakey raspberry pastries from their "Oops! We baked too much" half-price display. Yum! The staff is friendly and efficient. One fun moment: At the next table, we heard the server assert "You don't want a 20-oz coffee!" Wait, what? They looked stunned, until the server continued, "You want a ceramic cup, and the largest is 12 or 13oz. Only the takeout cups hold 20oz". I had to agree! There is nothing more pleasant than a ceramic cup when dining in :-). Roggenart truly fit the bill for a tasty relaxed breakfast! The discovery of a local Lavazza coffee shop gives me a thrilling new morning choice.

Love this as a lunch spot. They have great sandwiches and a good selection of pastries. Most of them are tasty, but sometimes they can be underdone in my opinion. My children love the brownies. The coffee comes in many fun flavors, but I prefer to go to different coffee houses for just coffee. Overall, this is a solid choice, but it doesn't blow me away.

If you're looking for a place to chat, study, and have a pastry look no further! After looking over the delicious options, I decided to get an iced pumpkin spice latte and bacon Gruyère swirl. I love a latte that has the perfect balance of coffee and sweetness. Roggenart didn't disappoint! The bacon Gruyère swirl was exactly what I expected from a savory pastry -- filling and cheesy with bits of meat throughout the entire thing. I have no complaints, and the cozy seating near the "fireplace" was the cherry on top.

So, after a several year pause, we decided to try Roggenart again. And we tried this spot on 40. I am a very patient person. When they brought my wife's cappacino and 5 minutes later brought my coffee, I was a bit surprised. Oh well. What first soured us on Roggenart was the unavailability of fresh French baggettes. (We do not see any bread options here.) So, this review applies to several factors. Originally, the pastries were balanced and not over sugared. We got a strawberry custard croissant, which definitely was not in that less sweet triton, but we did enoy it. The quiche Lorraine had rather large chunks of ham, but was otherwise quite good. The meat lover's omelette, on the other hand, suffered from style and contents. It was French style omelette (a plain omelette with filling added after the omelette is done) with a collection of meats varying in consistency. Some had been cooked "several" hours ago. In fact, the omelette did not seem fresh (the fluffiness of freshly cooked omelette was long gone). Finally, plastic flatware can be a struggle. Smuckers mixed fruit jelly aligns with plastic forks, but not fine pastries. I will note that the place is quite busy, and this reflects the difficulty finding non chain options. If you want something that really shines as an example of what could be, try Tatte. So, . . . Eat well, tip well.

The ambiance is so relaxing as Jazz plays sweetly in the background. It's great to come here early on a Saturday morning! The service was friendly, professional and efficient. I'm eating my tasty apple danish while writing this review and my chicken avocado melt is on the way. The food here is consistently tasty.

I am giving one star in contrast to my last review. I have only gotten delivery so far but I noticed they have some more items when I go in person. But it's only fresh in the morning. If you go in the afternoon, all the food is very stale. Equally stale and cold is the service at the counter- not friendly and he seemed annoyed by having to serve a customer. Service can be an opportunity to brighten someone's day. But it's treated as a waste of time in some places. So they don't restock with fresh pastries throughout the day AND their service is bad. Which leaves me with only a couple of options which are to go in the morning as soon as they open, and/or get delivery. In comparison, Tous Les Jours, the Korean bakery down the street constantly fills new pastries, is always bustling with people, and the service is efficient and friendly. So it's a totally different vibe. I would prefer to go there instead but still I would like to come here now and then for a change. I haven't given up on Roggenart as I do like a couple of their things like the mushroom Wellington and the peach tart. I'll just have to go early morning and not make eye contact with the person at the counter.

Went today early in the morning to get me some frangipane. I had to drive 39 minutes but I think it was worth it. The place was full as usual and with excitement and expectancy I looked for my frangipane... nothing! So I asked the young man who was organizing the pastry with care and gloves. "Not today." He answered. I tried to show my disappointment by sharing that we came all the way from Connecticut to get one. He just turned away and continued with his work. Okay, maybe he had no time to socialize. So I continued to look for something else to buy, I'm here anyway and they got other good stuff besides the frangipane. So I decided to go for the pain au raisin. My friend was already in line and ordered his pastry. As he finalized the transaction, it was my turn. However the young man just walked off and ignored me and another friend that had come with us. Okay no frangipane, that can happen, but this kind of service I haven't experienced before at Roggenart. I will return for a frangipane, but next time I go to Columbia.

I heard about this place many times before so I decided to try for breakfast one Saturday morning. The place was pretty packed inside but thankfully there was one more table we snagged to eat in. I ordered the bacon, egg & cheese breakfast sandwich and my man ordered the turkey, egg & cheese breakfast sandwich. The croissants were really light, buttery, and warm, the bacon was cooked nicely, but the eggs needed more salt. Overall, I definitely enjoyed the food and would come back again to try their lunch items!

All the yellow sticky notes indicate the items that are out of stock. This is very disappointing

Thanks for being open on Thanksgiving! My husband and I went for breakfast sandwiches. I got the spinach egg whites and Swiss, and my husband got ham and eggs. Sandwiches are hot, delicious, served on croissants that came out of the oven minutes ago. Everyone working was so nice and wished us Happy Thanksgiving. So glad we stopped by!

Seems like an easy fix. Anyway, we ordered a Philly Mushroom with old bay chips/drink and a Chicken Club with sweet potato chips/drink. We were given a table flag and we sat outside. Food came a few minutes later. Looked and tasted very good. The bread on the Club was nicely toasted, the aeoli was tasty and not too heavy and the chicken (decent portion) was pretty moist. My partner enjoyed the Philly Mushroom. Unfortunately, my partner received regular chips instead of Old Bay they requested. They don't like to complain, so they basically left them uneaten. I liked the sweet potato chips - really crisp with a good flavor. Nice size pickle wedge came with each sandwich. Very pleasant seating area outside. Fountain soda available with free refills.

I had heard there could be a bit of a wait, which isn't surprising since this well-established market and deli draws not only local residents but also people from nearby businesses. I happened to be about 15 minutes away, so I placed my order through their website. By the time I arrived, I must have missed the lunch rush--there was no line, and it took just a couple more minutes for everything to be wrapped, packaged, and ready to go. The market itself is intriguing and packed with all sorts of house-made specialties and popular Italian brands. There were also plenty of brands I had never heard of, giving the place the feel of a little Italian countryside market. I can only dream of traveling to Italy someday, so for now, I'll happily get a little taste of Italy here! Parking: As mentioned, parking is very limited. The street alongside the shop was also undergoing some sort of construction during my visit, so be prepared for some roadside limitations. There is a small, intimate dining area with room for only about four tables, but I loved seeing the white-tablecloth treatment. It added such a warm and welcoming touch to what is otherwise a very busy little establishment. The staff were busy but friendly. With the back-of-house operation appearing to be quite busy and working within tight quarters, it was impressive to see how well everyone seemed to coordinate and make the most of the available space. Generously filled with a tender, tasty blend of lump crab meat and fillers. Definitely shareable--but only with your favorite people! 10" Margherita Pie -- A NY-style thin crust topped with fresh ingredients, including tomato sauce, house-made mozzarella, and whole basil leaves. Fresh, colorful, and plenty to share. Overall, Eataliano is exactly the kind of neighborhood gem I love discovering.
