When first started it was 8 UCLA students. Four decades later, it is 50 committed actors. You simply must go. It is a not for profit and the actors work for nothing. The one the play was in was the smaller of the two, a 40+ seat small venue. The other theatre was being prepared for another show, I presume as there were some men working on a stage and the seats there were covered with plastic. That appeared to be the main stage as there were more seats. The seats in the B Theatre were very comfortable, cushioned movie theatre style seats. The venue is so intimate there really didn't appear to be any seat that wouldn't be good. A woman was there when I entered and she marked me off the list. I bought my ticket online and it was a will call matter. She handed me a program and as with many theatres, that is your ticket. The house opened about 10 minutes before the play started. Across from where she was doing the ticketing was a small area with snacks and drinks. There are bathrooms down a hall. This is a perfect venue for staging small plays.

Burai - Standing All Alone - an original Japanese Stage Play…read more This play, written, directed and produced by Naoki Fujiyama is why I made my way to Theatre Theater one Saturday night. That and an invitation from one of the cast members. This venue is pretty intimate, in other words, small, but it allows those in the nose bleed seats to see and hear the action too, unlike other venues where you might need a pair of binoculars. Everything is definitely worn but it works and I'm sure it's how admission costs are affordable. I'm not of this world of entertainment so I can't comment on the acoustics or lighting except that everything seemed to work. Seats were ok. Not in the best condition but, I also wasn't sitting on springs or metal. As for parking - this theater is on Pico. Street parking is available - just have to find a space. Overall - the place is OK. Been to better. Been to worse.

Now this is one review that's been sitting in my back burner for years, but since I'm still in…read morerecovery from their 10th birthday show, which was held last night, it's time I finally whip this out. Having spent some years in the Rocky Horror community, I've always found Hedwig refreshing. In the long run, it's a better movie -- great music, a deeper story, and more colorful characters -- and I've loved it for years. Yep, I'm a Hed Head. I first saw Rainbow Carnage nearly a decade ago, when Midnight Insanity, the Rocky Horror group I was associated with, still had their own Hedwig shadow cast, the Crypto Homo Rockers (and sadly CHR disbanded before I got the chance to see a show). They were doing a Kick Some Karaoke Ass theme night, with cast and audience members getting up to sing before the show. Even back then, I'd found Rainbow Carnage to be exciting, doing their film justice. Unlike Rocky, where call-outs are usually made putting down the characters, props, set pieces, and songs in the movie, Rainbow Carnage reiterates before their performances, "We love our movie, and please respect it." That's not to say that people still don't yell out their own jokes during the show and get a laugh from the crowd (I giggled like an idiot at the end when someone shouted, "Gentlemen, please, it's after Labor Day." Well, you had to be there). It's thoroughly encouraged that you sing along with the movie, as well. Also unlike the majority of Rocky shadow casts, due to the frequent costume changes in Hedwig, Rainbow Carnage uses multiple actors to play the roles. So you could see one person play Hedwig during "Tear Me Down," a different person as Hedwig for "Origin of Love," and then the first actor again for "Sugar Daddy." For the record, the girl whom I always considered a kick-ass Yitzhak some years back is now a bad-ass Hedwig. She's got the blocking down perfectly. As others have mentioned it is an interactive show. During the scene between Tommy Gnosis and Hedwig in her trailer, cast members drape a clothes line over the audience with slips, stockings, and shirts sliding across their faces like Hedwig and Tommy slipping through a labyrinth of laundry. During "Sugar Daddy," they toss out baggies of Gummi Bears, and YES, someone DOES get a "carwash, ladies and gentlemen!" Unlike Rocky they won't be squirting water at you during any scene (not that any scene really calls for it), so you can rest easy there. I just wish Rainbow Carnage held more shows throughout the year. I remember when they went down to performing quarterly and I was pretty bummed. Well, here's to another 10 years for the longest running Hedwig cast in the world!

Now they're only doing the shadowcast 2 times a year; January and July…read more I went last Friday and fortunately, they started a little sooner than usual though they kept us in line past midnight. Sigh. At least the pre-show entertainment was fairly good this time. The shadowcast this time seemed to feature more females and they actually got a black guy for the Sargent Luther Robinson role! They added a scene they never shadowcasted before which made me happy. Overall, I had another great time.

Yet this one-woman play was most entertaining to say the least. Thx Brittany and Yelp for providing a few complimentary tickets. Although tix are $20 thru 18Dec, Yelp comped a few folks today. Sweet b/c I hadn't realized the Kirk Douglas Theatre was so nice. Now back to this play ... how can a childless professional woman speak about motherhood and make it entertaining, you might ask? Well, it seems that Woodard tailors real life stories to best illustrate thoughts of conscientious LA women who have maternal instincts. She undoubtedly proves that no woman needs to bear a child in order to be complete or worthy in life. Basically ... "just be you". As a role model and aunt she is a better matriarch than many. An amazing must-see!!!!! Charlayne Woodard is absolutely incredible in her play, "The…read moreNightwatcher." Via a Yelp Elite invitation arranged by the one and only Brittany B., I was invited as a +1 by Yelp Elite Ming-Jou C. to check this play out. To be honest, I had no idea what to expect. Walking towards the theatre, we passed the uber-famous Honey's Kettle Fried Chicken, which we vowed to hit if the play sucked and we left early. Well needless to say, we never made it to Honey's............. Parking is quite reasonable even in the nearby pay structure - 2 hours free then $1/hr after that. City Hall has a good amount of free parking as well, so try that first since you'll save a couple bucks. Street parking is also no charge after 6pm, but that might be a little more sketchy to find since this is quite the bustling downtown spot with its cluster of cool restaurants and little shops. Upon arrival, we ran into super cool Yelp Elites Kent D. and Tuan C. in the lobby (who drove ALL the way from Orange County!) and did some nice Yelp catching up with them. As I looked around further, I knew this was the Yelp spot to be, as I saw quite a few other Yelpers checking in on their smartphones (with their white screens and telltale red Yelp banner across the top!) I had never been to this particular theatre before, and was pleasantly surprised by the cozy size. The staff are super polite and helpful, and the lounge and lobby areas are a great place to relax before the show. There's definitely not a bad seat in the house, and the venue was perfect for Woodard's non amplified solo performance. I purposely didn't look up the theme of the play beforehand so that I would have a fresh impression of what was going on. With that, I was immediately latched onto Woodard's intense and amazing presence on the stage. A truly phenomenal performance going on here, and that is an understatement. A single chair was her only prop, with minimal visual support from some overhead images on the screen behind her. Some background audio was also used here and there to add drama to some of the scenes, but the focus and energy of the audience was definitely on Woodard herself. The play itself is a series of stories about how this budding actress has been vitally involved with friends' and relatives' children from their youngest ages, but never having the privilege of actually having her own child. Deeply emotional scenes are retold in such detail that the audience can't help but feel as if they are witnessing these events unfold before their eyes in real time....amazing considering all of that comes from just one person standing there with some lights shining on her. One doesn't know what to expect from each scene - or even when it begins or might end - with each story painting a clearer picture of this woman's genuine and sometimes heartbroken efforts to better innocent childrens' lives. A great experience, and from what I understand, Woodard doesn't do this performance very often so definitely check out this VERY limited engagement if you have any possible opportunity to do so. Seeing it at the iconic Kirk Douglas Theatre will only make it 1000000x better! And be sure to check out other plays here too, I know I will!
