I've had my fair share of pork belly, and this was like 90% fat. In retrospect, I'm kicking myself for not saying something to the waiter. :o( The filet was tender and flavorful. Prep here seems to be like a fine steakhouse: medium comes out more like medium rare. I was looking for a local Omakase restaurant in the area and Roka Akor came up on my search. I loved that the chef choice menu was available without the need for advance reservation. I was sat, on host recommendation, right at the sushi bar. It was enjoyable watching the kitchen go to work on all the dishes. The setting was in a very large room in a very nice setting. From the price tag, I would have wanted a little more of an intimate location but it was not a deal breaker; part of the reason why this was not 5 stars. One of the other main reasons, everything seems to be done with urgency. My expectations of a Japanese restaurant is care and skill in preparing every dish. Here, all fish was pre-sliced, pulled from a fridge, and a line cook simply puts it together. For the food. I ordered the premium Omakase. I received so much food and it was all delicious. Received: Beef Tataki with shaved truffle, toro tartare, grilled scallops, sashimi platter with REAL WASABI! (can you see I was excited about this?!), miso glazed cod, grilled asparagus, crispy brussel sprouts, Japanese hotpot with table-side shaved truffles, A5 waygu beef, and a sorbet and yam custard. Hands down to the best dessert I've ever had. Definiely try the Matcha Custard! I never thought that matcha would pair so perfectly with banana. I was skeptical when my bf first took me here for dinner a few weeks ago....well, i am skeptical about any japanese restaurants, esp those in the chicagoland area, in general... I was really happy and satisfied after the dinner esp after having a pretty grumpy start of the day and lousy lunch :P we liked it so much that the coldest day of the month didn't deter us from coming back here for the omakase for my birthday.... :D the presentation and the quality of the food were excellent. After having the blue fin tuna sashimi from one of the courses, coupling with the Jiro dream of sushi we had watched, now going to the Tokyo fish market to get the real deal is way up high on my to-do list!!! the dessert platter were excellent! Knowing it was my bday, Chef Brett asked if i like chocolate and he sent out a really pretty dessert platter that had the best sorbets we never had and a chocolate ginger cream brulee...i don't usually like cream brulee because of the toasted brown sugar layer...but man...this chocolate ginger cream brulee had a well balance of favors and sweetness that i am glad my bf isn't much of a sweet or chocolate fans (yet he still said that's a really good cream brulee) :P the beef tatatki we had during our first visit was soooo good that it's probably the best app i have had... the taste and texture of the beef was well complimented with the hint of fragrance and crunchiness from the the shaved black truffle and the vegetable wrapped in the slices of the beef the Brussels sprouts with bonito flakes....gosh...who would think of bonito flakes could go so well wtih brussels sprouts!!! read more

Roka Akor has a great vibe with a pretty disappointing omakase. Neither the sushi nor the cooked plates lived up to the hype.

Well, I'm incredibly disappointed. How disheartening it is to make a reservation for a birthday at a carefully selected restaurant on a business trip to Chicago only to be flat-out denied by the chef the $98 signature omakase with $35 drink pairing (asked our waitress if there was a pairing, though not on the menu. There was, but in the end, couldn't have it anyway...) Moving on from that, the 5 cold & hot plates I ended up ordering were underwhelming and left a lot to be desired. I must say the service was truly accommodating after the admittedly significant let down. Bill certainly went out of his way to make up for the chef's decision (after all it is his decision whether I am worth it, after respectfully entrusting in him to choose what to feed me. I guess I must respectfully accept his decision not to...). Let me clarify - since my non-foodie friend was not also indulging in the signature omakase, I couldn't have it. Something about "timing" and "integrity" since my friend's food, if she ordered steak (she was going to order sushi), may have gotten cold while waiting for me. The omakase was 2-2.5 hours they said. And didn't want my friend waiting or the food to be improperly timed. Strange. I've had omakase at a Michelin star restaurant with this same friend ordering just a couple rolls for herself with no issue. I've seen omakase restrictions at other restaurants, but they are openly and clearly stated on the website and I avoid them when with company who is not comfortable partaking in it. I would've done the same with Roka Akor if I had known. After first asking the waitress if they could make an exception, who asked the manager, who then asked the chef, who looked over at our table then back to the manager, shaking his head, I must admit I had a bitter taste in my mouth. I'm still unsure why he had to look at our table to determine whether he'd serve the omakase. Anyway, instead of leaving, I ended up ordering a bunch of plates and my friend sat there after finishing her maki rolls (first to come out) ... She ate slowly for me because she's that great of a friend. She only came for my birthday because she knows how much I like exploring food and she picked at only a few of my dishes that she felt comfortable trying. However, the complimentary champagne, chef's complementary amouse bouche, and complementary $10 tataki tasting (one for each of us) was incredibly appreciated. We would have left had they not brought over birthday champagne and apps so quickly, or if they had not been so accommodating and apologetic- so kudos to Bill. Thank you. I hope they will indicate it somewhere on the menu, website, or opentable confirmation that they require a minimum of 2 for the omakase (they said they would...). Other diners beware- do not bring your non foodie friend here and expect to get omakase for yourself. Can't fault the manager or our helpful server, Iryna. I ordered some Sauvignon Blanc, Sakura Leaf Cured Ora King Salmon, Escolar Tataki (it seems they used to call it Butterfish Tataki), Forest Mushroom Karaage, Wagyu Tartare, and Robata Grilled Pork Belly. My friend ordered the Dynamite Scallop roll and salmon avocado roll. The food came out quickly at first, then slowly as the restaurant began filling up, then several dishes came with seconds in between. At one point a beet salad was dropped off at our table which neither of us had ordered and was later removed after first being asked if we had touched it... er... I felt underwhelmed and disappointed by the food. The Wagyu tartare was chewy (pomegranate gel was delicious though). Forest mushroom tempura was a bit bland... the waitress sold me when she said not to be turned off by tempura because theirs was very light. I found it lacked flavor, left a greasy aftertaste, and didn't allow me to enjoy the mushrooms themselves. The Sakura Leaf Cured Ora King Salmon with Grapefruit Ponzu and Red Sorrel was served with gold flakes in the ponzu... so bizarre to me and not necessary at all. Showy things like this make me wonder perhaps I was better off without the omakase. The Robata Grilled Pork Belly was good but nothing incredible. I regret not getting the Robata Grilled Shishito Peppers. Overall, I tried not to let being refused omakase skew my opinion. I left underwhelmed, wondering if I had just not ordered the right dishes at this place, and enjoying little more than the compassionate service and my friend's company. read more

My boyfriend and I came here on a whim for dinner because we were in the area and ended up ordering the decadent omakase. We figured that we typically can be heavy-handed when ordering anyways, and why not treat ourselves simply because we can? It was absolutely worth it. And for the quality and amount of food we got, the price felt completely justified. We spent about 2.5-3 hours there. We took our time to indulge in the food and it was brought out according to our pace. Despite how much food we had and even leaving with some leftovers, the food left us feeling very light in comparison to eating a greasy, hefty meal. Omakase is equivalent to a chef's choice meal. We had 3-4 plates each of appetizers, hot and cold entrees and dessert- essentially it was an opportunity to try all the flavor profiles of the restaurant which may or may not be on the traditional menu. I can't recall all the dishes but some of the highlights included the nigiri and sashimi- the fatty salmon was incredibly buttery smooth. There was a tuna tartar that was so delicious. There was a dish that was like a Japanese risotto that was incredibly aromatic with truffle. The dessert had a really light yet flavorful peach sorbet. I would highly recommend this place. Do the omakase if you can. The sushi grade is extraordinary and the food tastes so luxurious. Perfect for any occasion. I saw families there, couples, and even business professionals. The prices are higher than your every-day go-to-sushi but reasonable. Go whether or not you have a reason to celebrate, your palate will thank you. read more

Met two of my girlfriends for a girls night out here. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the polite staff. We had escargot on the house as appetizers, we ordered the seared salmon roll to share and then we each ordered the "specials" prime rib and lamb individually--al pictured below. All the dishes were extremely well crafted, we could tell they paid extra attention to the balance of flavors and temperature of the food. The only reason this place doesn't deserve 5 stars is due to the slow service, it took a while to get our wine, our appetizers and especially our entrees, about an hour and a half before everything came. Once dessert and the check came it was a solid 2.5 hours before we were able to leave. Even though this was a Saturday night, by the time we ordered dessert the restaurant was rather empty so there was no excuse for them to take another hour--especially for a $70+ meal. I love coming to Roka for a date night or a night out with friends/family. The restaurant has a cool ambience and the service I've experienced is great. I think my favorite part about Roka is the quality and care they put into plating the food. Not only is their food delicious but it's extremely hard for me to not take pictures of it. You will definitely spend a good amount of money here but it is worth it the quality of food. The restaurant has a variety of Japanese cuisine but I come here for the sushi because it's what I crave. The Roka Mule is good and I love that they make their ginger beer in-house. For appetizers we ordered the Wagyu Beef and Kimchi Dumplings (similar to gyoza) and Crispy Squid (calamari). Both were very delicious and I would get them again. The breading on the crispy squid had a different breading than calamari and I loved it. The chili sauce paired with the squid was delicious too. We ordered the modern nigiri which included 6 pieces of fish on rice with fun toppings like sauces, roe, and other seasonings. It was probably my favorite part of the meal because it looked beautiful and tasted delicious. Been to Roka a handful of times over the past few years and it's always pretty good. Last night we really enjoyed the Yellowtail Sashimi and Robata Grilled Scallops as our starters. The scallops are surprisingly large. For our entrees I had the Prime Rib Eye and she had the Grilled Chilean Sea Bass. Both were very good. As a side we got the Brussels Sprouts. They were amazing! Loveddddd this place!! They have THE best shrimp tempura. The batter was perfectly seasoned and it did not taste like oil like most shrimp tempura. Loved the sauce that went with it too. The lamb cutlets were delicious. Boyfriend had the waygu sirloin, which wasnt our favorite. The sides were a little too charred for us but it was still tender. The Brussel sprouts were super buttery and tasty. For dessert we had the Ube pot de Creme and omg it was SOOOO good. One the bestt desserts I've ever had. Whenever people ask me what my favorite sushi spot in the city is, I always say Roka - never miss a beat. I have brought so many friends here over the past 5 years. It is not fast or cheap, so do not come here if you're in a rush or pinching pennies. Do come here if you want to delight your tastebuds in a way you'll be dreaming about until you come back. Typically, I always order sushi and shareables - however I was fortunate enough to come for work and experience the decadent chef's tasting menu. I lost track of the number of courses they brought out after 4-5. I'm still speechless about the wagyu, I didn't know flavors like that EXISTED. By the time dessert came around, I thought I couldn't eat another bite until they brought out the ube ice cream which was heavenly! Our server was incredibly charismatic and not just informative about what we were eating, but visually descriptive in how it was made. Funny enough, he accidentally left about $300 worth of truffle on our table but we were honest and told him. I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the best meal I've ever eaten to this date still. The food here is just so incredible and the service is top-notch. I've also stayed past close with friends chatting up the employees and keeping the fun going at the bar. A couple of rolls were good, and a couple assaulted my taste buds with strong fishy flavor reminiscent of several day old fish. My experience here was epic for lots of reasons. My best friend was flying into Chicago from HI and we were reuniting for the first time in over a year. We love our sushi. I found five places I considered that were close to where she'd be staying for her conference and I do not regret that this is the one we choose. The food was incredible. I'll let the pictures do some of the talking on this one mostly because i was so present that day with my friend, I didn't right my review immediately. I do remember the atmosphere being wonderfully modern. The waiter being attentive and entertaining. The food being wonderful. It's not for the faint of heart if you can't $plurge a bit but it's definitely some of the best sushi in the Midwest. I'd even put it up there with some of my favorite places in the Pacific Northwest. My best friend has probably out eaten most of us with her world travel and I know she also throughly enjoyed our foodie adventure. We were there for lunch in August 2019 with reservations. I had a great time at Roka Akor last night with a group of my girlfriends for Galentine's! The six of us shared the Shishito Peppers, Edamame, Wagyu Beef and Kimchi Dumplings, Grilled Sea Scallops, and Grilled Octopus. They were all really tasty but it was actually the shishito peppers that blew me away with its flavor especially with the bonito flakes on top. For my entree, I got the Dynamite Scallop roll, Ora King Salmon nigiri, and Uni nigiri. Everything was on the pricy side, but I believe the freshness of the fish justified the cost. And of course, you're also paying for the ambiance and location. The desserts were the real winners in my book. The special was the Ube Custard which was so beautifully plated. The banana cake and chocolate cake were also extremely tasty and well plated. Our server was really great and attentive. We were a rowdy group, but he was able to get all of our orders and check up on us frequently. Not to mention, he was able to individually separate all of our tabs which is usually unheard of at these kind of restaurants. Only downside was that we were eating indoors and it seemed really packed and not COVID friendly so we were a bit concerned as the restaurant got busier later in the night. Had the absolutely worst dining experience I have ever had last night. I'm not typically one to complain about service. But the service I experienced at roka was so bad last night. I and my husband were invited to roka for a friend's birthday. They had a reservation for 12 people. We showed up right after they were sat. So we get to the table and there are no menus and not enough plates and chopstick for the table. I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant where I was sat without a menu before. The server comes to take our drink orders. But we still have no drink menus. So we don't order drinks yet. Eventually server returns with drink menus and we are able to order our drinks. More time passes and we are finally given food menus. (Still not enough plates and chopsticks.) The server returns to take all our orders. Food starts arriving (still not enough plates and chopsticks). However, there are three of us at the end of the table that don't get our food. Eventually the appetizer we ordered comes. But we don't have any plates or chopsticks to eat it with. We have asked for more table settings multiple times at this point. Finally, we get enough table settings. And eat our appetizer. More food keeps coming to the table, but three of us at the end still don't get our entrees. Our drinks/waters at this point are also empty, but of course, no one ever bothers to refill or offer more. We inform the server that we still haven't received our entrees. Eventually the server comes and starts clearing away our plates and chopsticks. We have to tell him again that we still have not gotten our food. Finally, after what totals to be over an hour we get our entrees. But we again need more chopsticks since the server cleared ours away. Also, my husband ordered his steak medium rare. The steak they gave him was so rare it was blue. He never sends food back to kitchens or complains. But he had to send this back because it was too rare for him to eat. Of course, the food tasted fine. Definitely overpriced for what we got, but I knew that would be the case going to roka akor. After all that, the server brings us our check. Never asked if we wanted dessert. Our drinks/waters have been empty for a while now. To top off the wonderful service we've had for the past two and a half hours, our check has items on it that we never ordered. So we have to inform the server that our check is wrong. We never got an apology for the horrible service. There was no attempt to make up for their terrible service. There are too many good restaurant options in the city for me to ever waste my money at roka akor again. The steaks are good but overpriced. The sushi doesn't particularly stand out and is also very overpriced. And for the cost, I expect way better service. If you're considering going here, I would recommend literally any other Japanese steakhouse in chicago. read more

Butterfish tataki was refreshing, great texture and delicious. The kimchi dumplings with wagyu beef was good but nothing special. Typical gyouza flavor, can't really taste the Kimchi or the wagyu. The flavors don't complement each other. The salty of the dumpling sauce overpowers the flavor profile the kimchi adds. It does have a nice spicy lingering heat which is good but for the price I'd suggest trying one of their other delicious options. Yuzu Palmer mocktail was light and refreshing. The white peach blood orange margarita mocktail was also good. Ordered uni from Japan. Usually they're only available from Santa Barbara. Absolutely delicious. Creamy and sweet. Robata scallops were a good appetizer. Smoky. Great texture. Crispy outside, tender inside. There's wasabi in there but didn't taste it. Hamachi Serrano chili is nice. Light. Fresh. The small bit of cream is delicious and helps to make it stand out with the texture of the crunch of the pepper. Would easily recommend this place. read more

Great ambiance and delicious food. We were seated quickly upon arrival- however I do recommend making a reservation. Our waiter was very attentive and did a fantastic job giving us recommendations. We started off with the crispy squid (not pictured)- which was absolutely PHENOMENAL! If you are looking for a shareable appetizer I definitely recommend the crispy squid!!! The portion size was generous. It had a nice chili lime kick and perfect ratio of breading to squid, with a nice crunch. The squid was paired with a delicious dipping sauce that complemented it really well. For my entree I ordered the Dynamite Scallop roll. The dynamite scallop roll had a very fresh taste and melted right into your mouth. It was topped with spicy mayo which gave it a nice kick, but didn't overpower the flavor of the scallops. The portion size was reasonable and I would definitely recommend it for those who like sushi that is on the lighter side. read more

We had the shishieto peppers, the encora (a white fish appetizer the server recommended, AMAZING), the crunchy tuna and the salmon roll and to top it off we got the Alaskan crab.
