This was our third stop in our "safari dinner" (a different course at four different restaurants) - all at Oakbrook Center. We chose it because we wanted sushi but had no other expectations. It's definitely higher end, with prices to match. Nice decor. Good menu selections. The waiter and helper were a little too high energy for the vibe but they got the job done (this is an odd side note, but we found it odd - when we finished with the oysters, they wanted to clear our plates, but I had already put one of the Nigiri pieces onto that same plate. The helper (sub-waiter?) actually took my chopsticks out of my hands, picked up my Nigiri, put it on a new plate and then swapped the plates out, and then gave me back my chopsticks...) Oysters were six for $25 so a little on the high end. Pacific Ocean. But they were drowning in soy sauce and something else you couldn't even taste the oyster. But a nice presentation. A very large serving of the tiger prawn tempura but the peppercorn sauce was so thin it was difficult to get any of the flavor on the shrimp. We went to the Chicago location a few months ago and I thought it was one of the best restaurants I've ever been too. We recently went to the Oak Brook location and we were disappointed. Service was friendly, but painfully slow. Took a long time to get drinks and food. Worse, the food was not very good. From the appetizers to the entrees, everything was quite ordinary (except the cod, which was exceptional) - and at very high prices. I ordered the ribeye medium rare and it was toughest, most flavorless steak I've had in a long time, plus it was cooked medium well. I would have sent it back, but we were with some good friends we haven't seen in a while and I didn't want to ruin the vibe. So, I'll get this out of the way I've been here a few times. I've done the decadent omakase as I am an avid fan of fine dining. Omakase/tastings in general no matter where you are, are not meant to be like huge American size portions. It seems like your average American male doesn't know that. Therefore, you are not meant to take home leftovers that are enough for another meal. If you are salty about that then I suggest going to your nearest fast food joint to load up. The decadent omakase from RA was alright about a 3.5/5. I'll go over the regular menu that we ordered from for a birthday celebration. Service was mid, they could have been a little more attentive. But frankly some places should just avoid providing patio outside sitting when it seems forced, small, right next to a large mall parking lot, no shrubs or greenery, no water features, etc. just tight and unpleasant to me. But again the black cod fish was flaky and tasty and the sushi dishes were top notch. Oh, the prices are way up there. But again I was a guest !!! The signature sushi rolls we ordered lacked flavor, and they def skimped out on the fillings (prawn & lobster). If anything, the best tasting and worthy dish imo were the wagyu beef and kimchi dumplings. On the brighter side of the experience, they do give a small complimentary ice cream if you're celebrating a birthday. Came in for a solo lunch. I was looking for something not too heavy and the waiter recommended the Black Cod Bento lunch special. It came with a gingery salad, miso soup with mushrooms and seaweed, beef kimchi dumplings, and the main entree. It was a lot of food. Even the salad was a very hefty portion. The fish was perfectly cooked, sauced nicely, and paired great with the sweetish puree and the sour pickled onions. The dumplings were served hot and freshly cooked with a crisp and a tender side, beef and kimchi but it's not spicy or sour and texture doesn't indicate kimchi, just savory deliciousness. I wasn't going to leave a review but out of concern for other with allergies, I am going to leave one. I came here with a group of people to celebrate an early Easter, I have a cucumber allergy, it isn't deathly but my whole body will turn red, break out into itchy, bumpy hives and it's a very uncomfortable experience that lasts weeks if I even have a small amount of cucumber. I ordered a sushi roll, and told my server, no cucumbers please I have an allergy. He said it was okay, he brought all the food out and just when I was about to take a bite, I see extremely large pieces of cucumbers taking up practically 60% of the roll. I called the server over, and asked him if this was cucumber they added to my roll? He said yes it was and looked directly at me, and told me to "enjoy the roll" while he puts in a new one. Enjoy what? breaking out in itchy hives for weeks? It's like he completely invalidated my allergy and took it as a big joke. I was concerned for the other person at our table that had an actual deathly allergy to shellfish, however, she was fine. The food in general was very bland, and we ordered $100s of items of foods, appetizers, entrees, sides, dessert, drinks, etc. and it was all very disappointing. It all lacked flavor, and was definitely not worth the price or risk of allergy. I will definitely not return here and advise anyone with an allergy not to as well. read more

Yum. Yum. YUM! There are so many great restaurants in the Oak Brook area, but please give this one a try. It's my new favorite! From the cocktails, to the apps and excellent service, there isn't a thing to complain about. Our server Wade made great recommendations and truly cared about our experience dining in. To drink, I got the beautiful person, which is very similar to an aperol spritz. For food, we started with the scallops, which are charred to perfection, and the sauce adds good flavor. These may have been the best scallops I've had. As my entree I got the sea bass. Other than it being slightly smaller than I expected, I loved it. We also split a few sides--the sweet corn and the sweet potatoes. I'd highly recommend both of them, but especially the sweet potatoes. My boyfriend got a steak which he was highly impressed with. I'm glad to finally experience this restaurant and will be sure to come back soon. read more

EXPRESS TRAIN TO TOKYO Superb 'omakase' at this Japanese spot in Oak Brook will leave you in awe. Roka Akor is an upscale sushi/steak restaurant sitting on the south edge of Oak Brook mall in between the Barnes & Noble and Puttshack. Their name is an amusing palindrome; Roka akoR = rokA Akor. 'RO' means hearth/socializing, 'KA' means projecting energy, a fun little play on words. For my 33rd birthday dinner, my wife and I selected the omakase experience (chef's tasting menu) at $105/person. They've also got a premium option for $135pp, which included A5 wagyu beef and other ultra-fancy stuff like caviar. We enjoyed 10 dishes spread out across 6 courses, and start to finish our meal took around two hours. First up were a pair of tataki dishes: escolar w/white asparagus in a yuzu shallot sauce, and NY strip steak w/pickled daikon and shaved black truffle (normally $22). These were delicate, flavorful, and a perfect way to start. Next up were blistered shishito peppers w/bonito flakes in ponzu (normally $10). This was followed by tiger prawn tempura w/fried shiso leaf and peppercorn tentsuyu (normally $17). Both were delightful appetizers. The sashimi course was incredible: 4pc each of thinly-sliced salmon, fatty tuna, yellowtail, albacore, and whitefish. The presentation was stunning and the fish was some of the freshest we've had outside of Japan. Really amazing quality. The fourth course was probably my favorite: yuzu marinated black cod w/pickled red onion and black sesame miso (normally $39). It was plated inside a big ol' leaf, served with broccolini on the side. Following that was a mushroom rice hot pot (normally $22), and a 10oz prime steak w/truffle aioli (normally $43). Roka Akor leans heavily on using truffle in their dishes, which suited us fine (how else am I going to enjoy this level of luxury?) Dessert was outstanding: a green tea pudding w/banana foam, and a chocolate lava cake w/crème anglaise. These weren't listed anywhere on the menu, so they were a lovely surprise (I'd imagine they cost $7-8 a la carte). Bread = 5+ Circuses = 5 At the end of the meal, our server brought out two glasses of sparkling wine as a nice little digestif. He was attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu as well as how the individual dishes were prepared. Most of their cocktails were $13: I had a Japanese highball while my wife enjoyed a saketini fashioned with gin and cucumber. Their wine list was extensive and there's a separate list exclusively for whiskey. I even spotted a bottle of Krug champagne priced at $1,375! That's some high rolling shiznat if I ever saw it. * TL;DR * Of all the meals we've had since visiting the Land of the Rising Sun in 2019, this was far & away the best. I'm not just talking sushi-related, either, I mean best PERIOD. You read that right; Roka Akor's 'omakase' was near perfection, a stunning -- albeit pricey -- example of the freshest fish and authentic Japanese courses that western money can buy. Ambiance was top-notch, the clientele/vibes were trendy and I would recommend coming here for a special occasion, because if you're gonna do it right, might as well go big. Went in for Sunday lunch and asked for outdoor seating. Only one table was left, but it was in full sun. We politely asked the hostess if we could sit inside instead. She looked annoyed. The main dining room was about 70% full, with several open tables in the center. I asked if we could sit at one of them. She didn't respond and just walked ahead of us and led us to the smallest bench seating in the very back of the restaurant. We sat there for at least 5 minutes. We were fortunate enough to sit at, what some may consider the sushi counter, I'd call it, the chef's table. We saw how all the magic happens in this open kitchen dining experience and it was AMAZING! There is a sushi side and a grill side. We sat on the grill side. It was like we got dinner AND a show. From the jump, Matt recommended eats from each category, including cocktails. Everything sounded so good we opted for the decadent Omakase. I really couldn't tell you what exactly we ate with each course (the pictures should help) but I can tell you EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS!! We had raw fish, cooked wagyu and everything in between. Roka Akor seems to have a very KISS (keep it simple, stupid) mentality so everything is not over complicated, made with fresh ingredients and cooked to absolute perfection. When dining out there is "always something" good bad or indifferent. For Roka Akor it's the fact that there is too much that is too good. They make it really hard to decide. Loved the service. Where we were seated, the room was on the darker side but also louder; reminded us of a more urban vibe. We started with the pork belly, which was tasty but on the fattier side, even more than usual for pork belly. We also ordered two nigiri samples including the white tuna and tamago. Tamago was delicious; the fattier white tuna, which was a little dry and leaner than we expected. The jalapeño himachi was very good, and my husband who isn't typically a sushi fan enjoyed it with me. For our main course we enjoyed both the Wagyu filet and sirloin, but preferred the Wagyu sirloin over the filet (better marbling in the meat, which is the point of Wagyu, and the truffle aioli was very tasty as well). We chose 2 side accompaniments including the mushrooms and Brussels sprouts, both very tasty. We also ordered a small side of white rice, off menu, which the server gladly accommodated. Cocktails were on the stronger side but generally good; wine selection by the glass was smaller than we'd like, but we found two wines we liked (the Pinot Grigio and the Chianti; the Chianti was tannin-rich and may have been over-aired, which was our only complaint). We finished the evening by splitting the green tea and banana whipped dessert, which was perfectly balanced, sweet and creamy. Service was excellent - we had just gotten done shopping and both wearing casual street clothes (so somewhat underdressed for the atmosphere), but it didn't impact our experience or service at all, which we appreciated. read more

Horrible service! Not worth the money you pay here. Went here for dinner last night on a double date and was not impressed with the service at all. It was like the server just didn't want to listen to our wants. For example, one of us ordered a glass of wine that never showed up with the rest of the drinks. Upon asking the server about its whereabouts, we were told the bartender is looking for the bottle to pour the wine out of. 30 minutes later, we are told the bartender is pouring it out now and a further 15 minutes later, we're finally presented with the wrong wine. I don't know what was going on here but quite a ridiculous interaction if you ask me. When the food finally showed up, the diver scallops I ordered never did. When I told the server about this, he told me he'd take it off the bill without the smallest apology and didn't even bother to check if I wanted something else instead. That is a big red flag for service. The things that did show up on the table were good. I really liked my spiced lamb cutlets, but would have loved to have eaten my whole meal. The ambiance was nice and it's a lively place. Overall, the service dragged my experience down to horrible and I cannot recommend this place if you're shelling out all that money to be treated nicely and get the things you actually ordered. I went to lunch with my work team and we had reservations for a party of seven at noon. First the positives - the food was fantastic! And HUGE portions. We started with endamame appetizers and they were cooked perfectly. The lunch specials came with soup, salad, and dumplings - again alot of food! I ordered the pork ramen and it was absolutely delicious and could have easily fed a family of four. Everyone else also commented on how exceptional the food was. Now the negatives - the service was very poor. We waited 30 minutes after being seated to place our drink order. That was after I walked over to the hostess and asked that she send someone over. Our server apologized profusely stating they were short staffed but we were literally the first to get seated when they opened at noon. When the main entrees came out, not everyone was served at the same time depending on what you ordered. They have different work streams for the ramen vs. the sushi for example. So I was finished with my meal before some colleagues were even served. The Chef did send 2 desserts to our table for the service inconvenience but I don't know if that was enough for me to give this place another try. read more

Average tasting food for well above average pricing. Make reservations if you go on a Saturday night at prime time. The decor is nice inside. Makes you forget you're in the corner of a busy mall. The lighting along the windows and back wall is too dark for dining. Otherwise, lighting was good in the rest of the areas. Music was constant and a bit too loud for comfortable conversation. Upon arriving at the table, there are wine glasses, water glasses and chopsticks. The chopsticks are not wrapped and are sitting on a clay chopstick rest with the menu on top of the chopsticks. This is unsanitary and never have I seen this before in any sushi restaurant I've visited. The chopsticks they set the table with are all in a box that the servers reach in and haphazardly grab. Put some wrappers on the chopsticks! If you don't want wine, the glasses go right back to the rack without being washed. This is after diners have already touched and breathed over the glasses prior to the server greeting them. Also low class. Food: Omakase Decadent lets the chef choose a 7 course meal for $145 pp (min 2 orders); this version gives larger portions and rarer choices than the "Signature" version. Our party had two of those and a steak dish and chicken dish. If you're doing omakase, it's best that everyone does it so you're all eating at the same time. We shared a bit of each. Omakase...since it changes based on the chef's choice, I'll summarize a few things: Sashimi and sushi platter: nicely presented but had some items on the plate that clearly can't be washed/sanitized between uses so that was gross (I.e. bundle of sticks). The flavors were decent with the fatty tuna being the best. The striped bass was the worst and tasted too fishy. They brought out a plate of halved corn cobs with a hot coating on them as part of the "decadent" meal. This was a big miss. 1. It doesn't go with the theme and 2. No one wants to eat corn off the cob when you're paying $145 a person. Dumb choice and kind of embarrassing. The rest of the options ranged from steak tatake to wagyu Kobe. Most of the items tasted good with the Kobe being a standout. The ribeye entree (noted as a Roka Akor signature item) was bad. It came sliced up in a bowl with some sauce and greens on it. I ordered medium rare and felt like it was medium...hard to tell color because it was so dark by the table. It was overly salty and tough. For $52 and with no side at all, this was a joke. The chicken dish was small...maybe 1 boneless skinless breast with some vegetables and was very tender and tasty. $24 Mixed drinks are $15+. Beer selection is limited. Wine selection is decent and starts at $12/ glass. They have lots of sake options. Server was good but not as attentive with water refills as should be with a place like this. They refresh your plates several times in between courses but place your silverware (if you're using silverware) directly on the table as they are changing plates. Not proper. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked with paper towels to dry your hands. I won't be returning here and don't see this chain lasting for too much longer based on the general concept and pricing. I feel like places like this strive to be something they're not and they're happy collecting the exorbitant prices from the ignorant patrons. They'll do this until they go out of business and then start another venture. Rinse and repeat. read more

Wow. This place is tucked away in the corner of the shopping mall but is definitely not shopping mall food. Our group of 5 came to visit for a wedding nearby and when someone suggested sushi for the night before, this was the highest rated in the area... and now I know why! Luckily I made an opentable reservation last-minute because upon arrival the restaurant was packed, however we were still seated immediately. Appetizers: Crispy Brussels - nicely crisp without being burnt, cooked all the way through. I was able to teach my friend about bonito flakes! Crispy Squid - like calamari but 10x better in execution. The tentacles are my favorite, not too chewy and just crunchy enough with the breading. Japanese Fried Chicken - oooh this brings me back to my boba shop days. It was a bit lackluster in comparison to the squid, but really can you compare chicken to squid? A decent appetizer but I'm obviously team calamari. Edamame with spicy sauce on the side - they went big with this, again with quality. The flaky salt just accentuates the natural flavors of the edamame and the server's suggestion of getting the sauce on the side was so appreciated. To the ninja busser emptying our shell plate, I salute you even though I never saw you. For my main dish I got the Hamachi Serrano Chili roll, which was AMAZING. I should preface this by saying yellowtail is my favorite sushi fish, but I have rarely experienced this quality hamachi. Also, their wasabi was real wasabi and not the cop-out horseradish wannabe. Drinks: I chose the Takahiro Nagayama sake and was NOT disappointed. My friends chose a red and white wine... both exceptional. I give props to your sommelier!
