We were shopping for something at Oak Brook Mall and decided to give Roka Akor a shot. Thankfully it wasn't too busy on a Sunday evening. The interior is very nice, albeit a bit darker than I like. Service was good, as you'd expect at any higher end restaurant. I went in thinking it was primarily a sushi place, but it's a mix of surf and turf. We ordered tuna tataki, roasted beet salad, a hamachi serrano chili roll, and kanpachi sashimi. All of the items were excellent. Everything tasted fresh. It didn't feel like there were any fillers, like too much rice, and not a ton of sauce that might cover up not-so-fresh fish. The tuna tataki and the sashimi were both high quality and practically melt in your mouth; fresh and tasty. The hamachi maki roll was also good; not too much rice and not too much sauce, so you could taste the other ingredients. I'm not really a salad person, but the salad was also fresh and tasty; the whipped tofu was a really interesting touch, and the hazelnuts added a nice crunch. Overall, a very nice meal. It was also very expensive, though. Not somewhere I'd go often. Still, I'm glad I was able to treat my wife to a fancy dinner. read more

Wow. This place is tucked away in the corner of the shopping mall but is definitely not shopping mall food. Our group of 5 came to visit for a wedding nearby and when someone suggested sushi for the night before, this was the highest rated in the area... and now I know why! Luckily I made an opentable reservation last-minute because upon arrival the restaurant was packed, however we were still seated immediately. Appetizers: Crispy Brussels - nicely crisp without being burnt, cooked all the way through. I was able to teach my friend about bonito flakes! Crispy Squid - like calamari but 10x better in execution. The tentacles are my favorite, not too chewy and just crunchy enough with the breading. Japanese Fried Chicken - oooh this brings me back to my boba shop days. It was a bit lackluster in comparison to the squid, but really can you compare chicken to squid? A decent appetizer but I'm obviously team calamari. Edamame with spicy sauce on the side - they went big with this, again with quality. The flaky salt just accentuates the natural flavors of the edamame and the server's suggestion of getting the sauce on the side was so appreciated. To the ninja busser emptying our shell plate, I salute you even though I never saw you. For my main dish I got the Hamachi Serrano Chili roll, which was AMAZING. I should preface this by saying yellowtail is my favorite sushi fish, but I have rarely experienced this quality hamachi. Also, their wasabi was real wasabi and not the cop-out horseradish wannabe. Drinks: I chose the Takahiro Nagayama sake and was NOT disappointed. My friends chose a red and white wine... both exceptional. I give props to your sommelier! Roka Akor had been so good every single time we have come. Do I get the same thing, the wagyu roll, every time? Yes. But that is simply because it is *chefs kiss* perfection. I will say that while service can be slow to start, especially if it's busy, the food is well worth it. We have sampled many appetizers as well and the wagyu dumplings are an absolute favorite. The ube dessert is also to die for! I can't even begin to describe how amazing this meal was. I was able to try the Dynamite Roll which is by far my favorite now. The scallops on top were simply soft and fresh and delicious. I also tried the Poached Lobster roll and it was really good as well but not as good as the Dynamite. I enjoyed a drink that's called I believe Suzachi I think? But it had honey, and wow was delicious. My bf had the Mushroom Rice Hot Pot,Prime Rib Eye, and an old fashioned. The Mushroom Rice Hot Pot with truffles was beyond what I could of imagined. The Prime Rib Eye was definitely quality and the whole meal combined earned the best meal of 2021 for me. Steve our server was simply amazing and did such a great job recommending things to us. We ended the night with their Green Tea Custard and let me tell you that was one of the most unique desserts I've had. The star for me were the caramelized bananas that were layered on top of the green tea custard. This restaurant made driving from Minneapolis to Oak Brook IL so worth it. I promise I'll be back here again and enjoy their lunch specials next time. I just have to say it's pretty amazing to get high quality and unique food in the suburbs and the need to drive to a city for a unique experience is not necessary as it used to be at one point. Tasted good at the first sip cause we were kind of cold. The salad was decent but started to get saltier as we ate it. The dumplings were good. I would get that again. I ordered the glazed ribs. It looked amazing when they brought it out, but the ribs were dry when I ate it. I had to ask the waiter for a side of their sauce. Though, it tasted better with the sauce from yuzu miso cod dish! We love Roka! It's always a struggle between ordering our favorites and trying new items on the menu. This time we did a combo of the two ordering our two favorite sushi and trying some new items. The waitress suggested we try the Maitake mushrooms, we were not disappointed and will be adding this to our regular rotation. For his birthday celebration, my husband received a free dessert with a candle. The decor and ambiance of the place is great, not too loud to have a good conversation. After going to a well known local steak place a few weeks ago for another birthday celebration, for half the price, we'll choose Roka any day for the variety and complex flavors and pairings. This location is usually crowded for dinner, so I recommend making reservations ahead time. They offer indoor and outdoor tent seating. They try to practice social distance when less crowded. I usually order the tiger prawn tempura with a shrimp tempura roll. Very good and above average. The sweet corn is a nice small appetizer that is hot. Everytime we come to Roka Akor, we are amazed with our experience. The fish and vegetables are always extremely fresh and the portions feel perfect. We have come for both lunch and dinner, and the ambiance is great for either. This spot also has amazing options for vegetarians (get the ramen at lunch!). The beet salad surprised me at how good it was. The cherry on top is always the service, it was my parent's anniversary and the manager brought out a dessert tray with four incredible desserts and fresh fruit. read more

I personally chose the restaurant week menu ($48). My order consisted of the shrimp tempura (larger than I expected, so I shared with the table), snake river farms wagyu, and the ube pot de creme. I loved the wagyu and the brussel sprouts for the table! The wagyu was very tender and melted in my mouth. Sucks that I don't have a picture of my food (ate it before I realized I forgot to take some pics!). I'm normally not a dessert person, but I have to say the ube pot de creme was very delicious and not too sweet! I finished the whole thing :) The service was absolutely amazing! I hate that I forgot our server's name, but he did a wondeful job introducing the menu to everyone and providing genuine recommendations based on the individual's preference! I come here to eat quite often, personally my favorite dishes are their wagyu kimchi dumplings and the mushroom hotpot. They are absolutely delicious. The dumpling is a good way to start the meal and the meat inside is never dry. The mushroom hotpot is rich, and a great comfort food. The staff here are nice and the service has always been quick. Tried for the first time during Restaurant Week and was not disappointed. Beautiful restaurant, great service and awesome food. $60 3 course meal (1st course had several bites of 3 different items....Wagyu Beef & Kimchi Dumplings, Crispy Spicy Tuna Maki & Yellowtail Sashimi with Poached Garlic Ponzu & Serrano.....1st 2 were amazing, Yellowtail was a little tasteless to me but was the fave of one of my friends......tho she couldn't eat the Dumplings because the Kimchi contains shrimp and she has an allergy. 3 choices for Course 2 - I had the Yuzo Miso Marinated Black Cod with Pickled Red Onions. It was served in a grilled leaf 'boat'....nice presentation. My 2 friends both had the Snake River Farms Wagyu Sirloin with Mushrooms and Soy Butter. They both loved it. We all got a side of Sweet Corn with Soy Garlic Butter, which was served on the cob (quartered). Very tasty. My favorite thing of the night was the dessert - Ube Pot de Creme with Berries and Bubu Arare. Not sure what that all means but it was SO GOOD. Waitress gave a long description of it but one of the ingredients was purple yams and it was indeed purple and one of the most unique-tasting desserts I've ever had. For RW they also have an optional beverage pairing, which one of my friends had. It included a 6 oz pour of Pinot Grigio, one of Merlot and then a (small) Espresso Martini for $30. Really a pretty good deal when you think of it because if you had just two wines or cocktails it would be more than $30. This place is not cheap but RW menu was a lot of food for the money and very delicious. I'd definitely go back. My only nit pick would the loud, pulsing 'song that never ends' music......felt like we were 'in the clerb' instead of a restaurant. I'd rethink the music.
