We dined here for brunch with another couple and had a very good meal. We sat in a booth outside because my friend was dog sitting and we brought the well behaved dog with us. They offered a dog bowl of water as we ordered our drinks. My husband and I did the bottomless Bloody Mary's which were well made with a little lemon and olive garnish. We had a variety of menu choices since they have all day happy hour if you sit outside or at the bar. They also have a weekend morning brunch menu, and a regular dinner menu. It seems like the kitchen hadn't woken up yet and we're running very slowly. We then put in our brunch order in case that food was really slow too. The restaurant started to fill up and surprisingly the service got better. I ordered from the brunch menu and was so happy I did. The Soft Shell Crab Benedict served on a bed of crab meat and wilted kale on top of a cheesy grit cake was outstanding in portion and flavors. A definite reorder for next visit. My husband and friends all ordered a fried rice bowl with different proteins. The chicken was basic, the short rib was average but the crab was really good and full of crab and Asian flavors. I think there are alot of Asian influenced restaurants on Atlantic Ave but this place really felt authentic in flavors. I got the birria Egg Roll which was delicious. The consomme was perfect. My hubby got the short rib Gyoza which was good but I preferred mine. My friends got a tuna tartare (no pic) and a shrimp and scallop shumai which he enjoyed. The food comes out staggered and there was a big time difference between the first delivered tuna tartare and the Gyoza which was last served. We were all finished with our starters before my hubby received his. Not a big deal as we were in no rush and our server apologized but the restaurant was practically empty so might be an issue when it's packed. For mains we got 3 different fried rice dishes and a crab Benedict which my friend raved about. My hubby loved the pork belly fried rice. I swapped the pork for chicken and it was lackluster and a little too much ginger in the rice for me. My other friend enjoyed his Crab Fried Rice. All in all it was a good meal. We marveled at the beautiful decor- flowers covering the ceiling, dark moody interior and velvet seats...very vibey with an almost all female staff. Prices and portions however are pretty ridiculous. The happy hour prices for rolls with only 6-8 pieces were normal prices I pay at other establishments. Maybe it's because you're on the Ave, so it's gonna be pricey, but it was a bit over the top. My husband and I have never felt so rushed at a restaurant. The entire experience, from sitting down to walking out, was barely an hour -- closer to 30 minutes of actual dining. Dinner, especially at a place like this, should feel like an experience, not a race. On top of that, the food itself was overly salty. I ordered the udon noodles, and all I could taste was soy sauce -- completely overpowering any other flavor. What was most disappointing is that we felt like a number, not a couple trying to enjoy a relaxing evening out. We didn't even get the chance to consider dessert because we were essentially rushing through our meal and left feeling too full and overwhelmed. A dinner out should feel enjoyable and paced properly -- typically a 1.5-2 hour experience -- not something you feel pressured to finish as quickly as possible. I'll just disclose that parking is quite expensive, so be prepared to either park far, or pay a premium if you're looking not to walk much, as they do have some valet parking nearby. I wanted to drink all the consomé when I finished (but that's not lady like.. so I didn't ) . On, to drinks.... Which were all super creative! Let's definitely start with the positives, of which there are several! From the moment you walk through the door the staff could not be nicer. Roka Hula has it down in terms of service with a smile. From the front of the house to bussing the table, to our server, the service was wonderful! Our Server, Lauren, was a true gem. Secondly, this restaurant is breathtakingly beautiful AND comfortable. Plenty of booth seating (always a preference of mine when with a small group) with booths large enough to accommodate shared plates. Now, for the most important part, the food itself. Delicious. Went with a friend and we split. Our order included - 1 glass of white wine 1 vodka and soda Charred Japanese Eggplant (side dish) Salmon Crudo (appetizer, 5 pieces) Shrimp & Scallop Shumai (dim sum, 4 pieces) Smoky Spicy Tuna Roll Riceless Tuna, Salmon, Hamachi Roll The rolls weren't knock-your-socks-off beautiful. To be honest, when the Spicy Tuna Roll arrived, I was disappointed. The tuna did not look appetizing at all. However, it was delicious, with just the right amount of spice (I ordered it 'non-smoky', which is an option). The riceless roll had a minimal amount of fish. IF I were to go back (we'll get to that), I'd probably pass on the rolls and stick to other shareable plates. For what they are charging ($22 - $24 per roll), there simply isn't enough fish to justify it. I'd rather stick to Yama's rolls (Pineapple Grove sushi spot). Now, I am the first person to say that price should not be a shock. It's not as if prices aren't on the menu. But when our bill came (~$140 excluding tip), I was truly surprised. The amount of food simply didn't justify the cost. Our simple drinks were likely $20/each (Roka Hula markets itself as a Tiki Bar, so there are a myriad of more exotic options). The most awkward part is that they push a Membership program, whereas you can get a rather substantial discount (I think it was up to 20% off), but at an equally substantial fee. My bad for not taking a photo so I had the details to share. This is a great spot for those looking for Instagram-worthy postings. Lots of "smoky" (literally, dried ice smoky) food and drinks that make for a fun photo op, along with the beautiful surroundings. For me, probably a one-and-done, although I'm certainly happy to have visited this venue! read more
