I thought I had reviewed this Chinese restaurant already, but turns out I haven't so far. So these pics are a combination of my last two visits. Both times were for lunch, and there was a large party both times. It was also a treat for me to show for the first time my Texas-based niece and nephew one of my favourite Chinatown places in Toronto. We were seated very quickly, despite the lunch rush. Very clean tables and floors, and a well-lit area. Since there were eight of us, we got the round table with a lazy Susan. We started with the chicken and corn soup, which heated us up quickly on a chilly January day. Then the dim sun arrived in numbers, from the delectable Har Gow, the scrumptious Siu Mai, the tasty deep-fried squid tentacles, the texture of the curried cuttlefish, and the interesting mouth-feel of chicken feet. Sizzling plates of beef in black bean sauce and shrimp/scallops in a Szechuan sauce were just epic, arriving to the table in a scathing aroma that made my mouth water. We had to balance all that great protein with some savoury Gai Lan, sautéed in garlic. All in all, we arrived in cold spirits, but left with full bellies! Thanks for showing my niece and nephew one of the best establishments on Spadina!
A decent dim sum spot with a staple amount of variety when it comes to choices for what to get. As for the wait time, it definitely could've been improved. The decor and overall atmosphere was decent, but seemed like it wasn't as clean as it could've been (waited a long time to reset tables).
First walked in and got a table for 2 right away. It took them about 5 minutes to take our order, so everything was going fine at first, even though I felt like they could've been a bit more welcoming. After ordering, I felt like the food was a little overpriced, but nothing crazy. The noodles were a bit dry and crunchy, but everything else was good until I found rotten green peppers. I was honestly disappointed. I get that it could've been an honest mistake, but they really need to pay more attention. What really annoyed me was the tip. They added it in without mentioning it at all, and it definitely wasn't worth it since the only time we talked to the waiter was when they took our order and when we paid no check-ups or anything. The total was $64 including their tip, and I gave $70. If I didn't ask for my receipt, I never would've gotten the change back and honestly it just made me feel like I was getting scammed.
I was on a walk today. When I lived in toronto Rol San was my favourite dim sum place and I went often. I hadn't been since it moved across the street so knew I had to complete my toronto visit with a lunch here. Staff was super friendly and efficient. It was steady busy and I loved listening to all the conversations going on around me. I ordered my 3 favourites and they did not disappoint. Made my toronto trip complete
Late night eats here always hit the spot Service is quick so expect be in and out quickly. i used to come here all the time after the club so it brings back a lot of memories that I don't really remember. Don't expect 5 star food and service but this definitely satisfies your belly after a long night if drinking I would consider this a late night staple and part of the post bar/club Toronto culture
The food here was absolutely delicious, but unfortunately, the service from one particular staff member ruined the evening. We visited on May 12th around 7:00 PM. There was a female server with her hair tied back who was incredibly rude from start to finish. In contrast, another server with short hair was wonderful--she explained the dishes perfectly and was very professional. The issues with the first server (hair tied back) were as follows: * Aggressive Serving: She practically threw the plates onto our table without a single word of explanation. * Rude Clearing: She cleared our plates away while we were still eating, without even asking if we were finished. * Payment Attitude: Since the bill and the payment machine clearly stated "Tip Included," we did not add an extra tip. When she realized this, she threw the receipt at us. * Hostile Departure: As we were leaving, she literally glared at us. It makes no sense to expect an additional tip when the service was non-existent and the attitude was hostile. While the food was great and the second server was kind, the management needs to address this specific staff member's behavior. It was incredibly unprofessional.
We enjoyed every dish we ordered (see menu), and the only "average" dish was the look funn (diced beef and preserved vegetables in rice rolls) dish. Generous filling, but average sauce. The spareribs with black bean, seafood dim sum (upscaled version of har gow), sticky rice with Lup cheong and minced pork in lotus leaf (aromatic, too!), soup dumpling (yummy ginger highlighted xiao long bao), bamboo fungus with mixed mushroom dumpling, beef tripe with ginger and scallions (first time eating tripe and it was tender and flavorful!), were all absolutely winner dishes!! The restrooms are clean but are downstairs though, with ample railings on both sides keep you safe. Service was terrific, and even the tea was yummy. Top it off with the requisite fortune cookie and we were stuffed!
The last time we came was at their old location across the street. I remember thinking at the time that I couldn't understand why this place is so popular and I walked away today thinking the same. Tried the har gow, siu mai, fried squid, veg rice roll, sesame paste balls, and saute beef rice noodle. The tea is one choice only. Everything just lacked umami flavour. The Har gow is missing the sweet and lightly savory shrimp flavour. The rice roll texture was good but filling was lackluster. The noodles were quite one dimensionally salty. I'm surprised people mention the squid tentacles, they are very ok. The best things were the black sesame paste balls. I would say that it's not bad, but it's also not good and there are too many other places nearby to spend a meal that you don't find tasty. There is plenty of seating, service is prompt, prices are about 50 cents more per dish here, and a 15% tip is already included.
I came here with 3 other people to have dim sum. We showed up on a weekday and was pleasantly surprised that no reservation was needed unlike Vancouver. We were recommended by colleagues to have dim sum here. The dim sum doesn't disappoint. We ordered 12 items and every items were fresh and delicious. Prices were all very reasonable. It came to $33 per person including tips and tax. The shumai, shrimp dumplings and rice rolls were my favorite. The decor of the place was very modern and clean. The staff were friendly. They serve dim sum all day to my surprise. Parking is tricky to find in the area. We came here by Uber.
First time visiting the new location since they moved and the place is quite large. They have all the staple dim sum items you would expect. Portions were well sized and food was super hot in temperature and stayed warm. Great place in general for all day dimsum, went at 2pm and there was no wait. Only thing I was not a fan of was the auto service charge for just a table of 3. Price wise is also on the expensive side, would expect to average $20-30/person
My visit to Rol San was fantastic! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a lively and welcoming atmosphere that set the tone for the meal. The service was exceptional attentive, friendly, and quick, making sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. As for the food, it was absolutely delicious! The flavors were spot-on, with fresh ingredients and beautifully balanced dishes. I highly recommend it for anyone craving authentic and mouth-watering dim sum. It was truly a great dining experience!
I dined at Rol San on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at 10 pm. Where I'm from, there's no decent dim sum restaurants, let alone one that serves until 12-3 am. So after a long day without a proper meal, Rol San being able to serve dim sum at late hours surely hit the spot. I ordered a couple of staple dim sum plates that I usually order when I go to a dim sum place such as the steam shrimp dumpling (har gow), pork and shrimp dimpling (shiu mai), and shrimp rice rolls. The size of the har gow was almost twice the size I usually get in the U.S. and had a lot of shrimp. The shiu mai tasted well-seasoned and fresh. The shrimp rice rolls tasted pretty standard and comparable to all the dim sum restaurants I've been to. The only disappointing dish was the bbq pork (char siu). They didn't look like the picture on the menu as the pork was sliced more thinly and was bathing in a thick soy sauce (probably to compensate for the dryness of the pork resulting from sitting in the warmer all day). It didn't taste bad, just not as good if it was eaten earlier in the day. Service was decent. The restaurant got even busier after we got our food, which was surprising for a late Sunday night. But the attentiveness never wavered. Overall, Rol San succeeds in delivering decent dim sum at convenient late nights with good service. I would recommend Rol San if you're craving for authentic dim sum for second dinner!
I've always been a fan of Rol San but during my last visit I noticed that they have increased their prices yet again. The value is just not there anymore. For example, a small bowl of pork and preserved egg congee will cost you $8 now... every other place charges $5 max. Unless I am really craving late night dimsum I won't be coming back. What should have been a $30 meal turned out to be $50. They are really taking advantage of the lack of selection for late night dimsum in downtown TO. Just so disappointing. read more

Rol San is a popular Toronto based Dim Sum establishment located in the Chinatown district of the city. It's opened early too late night with Dim Sum all day long. Making it a great go to spot after a night out in the town. The interior stretches deeper in from front seating the area. The backroom can sit larger groups. Decor wise it's leans toward a mix of modern and traditional Chinese styles. The menu is typical Dim Sum. Lots of small dish options. Each one priced out accordingly. They are brought to your table via the waiter and not by a cart like some people are used to. Lots of the options taste great. Nothing crazy that blows you away though. Still good options to pick from. Overall, it's nice atmosphere to be in. The service is decent and not had. Prices are really up to you when it comes to how much you want to eat. There's lots of options for Dim Sum so this place might seem average to others but definitely check it out and let me know what you think. read more

Rol San is hands down one of the best Chinese restaurants I've had in Toronto's Chinatown. I have to say that I've scrolled past them a handful of times in a Yelp search as I was skeptical about them due to their business name -- never judge a book by its cover. I decided to give them an actual chance to wow me, and I am so glad I did because the pictures on here showed me they knew what they were doing. They serve dim sum all day, and they have a huge selection of traditional Cantonese cuisine from live seafood to fried rice to noodles to congee etc. I was craving some pan fried turnip cakes as I wasn't able to get it yesterday at Yin Ji Chang Fen due to their small dim sum menu. When I saw that Rol San served it, I was able to fill that void. I was in my element, ordering in Cantonese and having a good time. My partner and I loved their salted fish and diced chicken fried rice -- I love that they used actual salted fish as there was a piece or two of fish bones here and there, and it was marinated to perfection. I also loved how their salted and pepper fried shrimp is so different and unique compared to what I'm used to -- they removed the shell, deveined it, cut it in half and deep fried it. The waiter was afraid that we wouldn't want it because it didn't have the head on it etc -- Chinese superstition that everything needs to be perfect and whole and can't be without the head or tail, I reassured him we'd be just fine as it's less work for us. We ordered a bunch of food to share -- my partner ordered the Chiu Chow dumplings from the dim sum menu, I did their pan fried turnip cakes and their marinated chicken feet from the dim sum menu. As for their dinner menu that's family style dishes, we did their deep fried salt and pepper shrimp, salted fish and diced chicken fried rice, and their baby bok choy cooked with garlic sauce. The food came out fast, everything tasted delicious, and I'd recommend this location to anyone in the area looking for authentic Chinese food. read more

Walking down the street and looking for something enticing to eat, craving everything at once, I knew dim sum was the way to go during this late hour. With these 6 different dim sum dishes, each one was cooked perfectly. Having had dim sum many times, I just thought this would be a good spot to fill the hunger and go. I couldn't have been more wrong and instead, each dish had a fresh taste that tasted different than my previous dim sum experiences. I wanted more from each bite and experience the flavor all over again. With this kind of food, I had forgotten that I was eating a late night dinner. read more

We came here on a weekend during lunch and as expected, there was a lineup. The waiting wasn't too bad, however we were given the option of sharing a table with two other parties at a large round table to expedite our wait time. THIS WAS A BAD DECISION ON MY PART. It was probably because I was so hungry and wanted to just eat. I was eating with one other person so I thought it wouldn't be so bad. The experience was awkward because you end up sitting next to your friend and having to turn your neck to eat and chat is the most annoying thing to do. Anyways, aside from table issues, I found the food to be just as I remembered it - delicious and satisfying. Here is a list of the foods I ordered and their rating: - Steamed BBQ Pork Buns (2/5 - too little filling) - Shiu Mai (4.5/5) - Minced Pork in Bean Stick Rolls with Oyster Sauce (4/5 - loved the springy texture and savoury flavour) - Har Gow (4.5/5) - Sticky Rice with Pork Meat in Lotus Leaf (4/5 - solid flavour penetrance from the meat filling into rice) - Fried Bean Curd with Stuffed Shrimp Paste in Soy Sauce (3/5 - high tofu to shrimp ratio) - Shrimp Rice Rolls (2/5) - Steamed Minced Beef Balls with Bean Stick (4/5) - Spareribs in Black Bean Sauce (4/5) - Chicken Feet in Chef's Sauce (5/5) - Deep Fried Taro Puffs Stuffed with Pork Meat (4.5/5) - Baked Milk Tart (4/5) They have a solid selection of dim sum items here and I find that their food is quite consistent. However, prices here are also quite steep so be aware of how much you order. read more
Don't go to downtown dimsum place on a Christmas day. Wait time to get the table was insane!! An hour!! But just in case this place might have to shut down due to 13 story building project, I had to be there again. I would be really sad, if that proposal goes through. Ordered usual stuff and there were leftovers for tomorrow. read more

Amazing dim sum. This place is a gem within Toronto. They serve all day dim sum and it's very good. We ordered about 6 different plates, including: bbq pork buns, shrimp dumplings, shumai, lotus rice wrap, short rib. The dim sum is made when you order, there are no carts, so food was super hot when it came by. I highly recommend this spot! read more

This is my GO-TO dim sum spot in Chinatown of Toronto. We normally park in the parking lot and walk over to grab dim sum. I was surprised that the second time I came here for dim sum was on a Saturday afternoon and I was expecting a long wait time but we ended up "Daap toi" (which means sharing table with strangers) without waiting. So once you get seated you can start filling out on the paper what dim sum you want. LIke most dim sum places it is in English and Chinese. The dim sum here is not bad and the food comes out pretty quick. Also take note of when the order comes out and you are sharing table they might give it to the wrong side of the table or miss out on the order. I think I would still come back here when I am back in Toronto since I have not found another dim sum place as of yet. The price is also very responsible too. read more
3.5 stars Four words: All day dim sum!!! My friend recommended this place and I also heard about it from a travel YouTuber that I follow as well. This is not your typical dim sum place where they have the push carts. They give you a menu card and you would mark down what you want. There are about 54 dishes to choose from and you can refer to my Yelp photo for the menu. The food took a while to come out since everything is made/steamed to order. We got seven dishes: 1) Steamed BBQ Pork Bun- Recommend. It's a soft dough bun with roast pork filling. 2) Shrimp Dumpling (Har Gow)- Recommend 3) Sticky Rice with Pork Meat in Lotus Leaf- Recommend. They give you 2 pieces. It's very filling. 4) Fried Eggplant with Stuffed Shrimp Paste in Soy Sauce- Recommend. The dish came out piping hot. 5) Shrimp Rice Rolls- Recommend 6) Chicken Feet Chef Sauce- It was OK and I think they used the roast pork seasoning since the chicken feet was in a reddish color. But, the chicken feet was cooked pretty well and meat falls of the bone. 7) Beef Tripe with Ginger & Scallion- Recommend We paid about $32 CAD (including tax & tip). Good value and we did get a lot of food. The service was alright. The waiter was a bit rude in the beginning. But, I'll still return one day when I'm in Toronto since the food was pretty good. Spadina, Chinese food -- is there really anything you can complain about? Its not like you don't know when you're already going into it. "All Day Dim Sum" --- UHHH YEAH?! The best. It was a busy Monday lunch and there was a small wait ahead of us. They definitely accommodated. Big tables was asked to be shared with groups of two. The table turnover was quick, however they most definitely did not rush anyone. The food came out in a timely manner and tasted absolutely delicious. Honestly other than the back room being closed for renovations there is not alot that you can really complain about. Definitely hit the spot. har gow, siu mei, deep fried shrimp dumplings, shrimp rolls, squid tentacles, steam rice. DELICIOUS! Great for Brunch -- and for those super late nights ;) read more
Came here around lunch time on a Friday to satisfy a dim sum craving. Since they serve dim sum all day and there were a lot of people walking into the restaurant, my friend and I thought this place should be good. We were wrong. While the dishes were pretty cheap, they didn't taste good. We ordered chicken feet, soup dumpling, braised beef ribs, fried taro dumpling, and radish cake. The chicken feet were overcooked and so soft, it felt like I was eating soggy bread. The soup dumpling tasted good but looked nothing like a soup dumpling - it was slightly bigger than the size of my fist, and the wrapper was broken. The broth tasted good though! There was nothing particularly memorable about any of the other dishes we had. The service was also poor. The tables are packed together, so I was practically arm-to-arm with the stranger at the adjacent table. Would I come back here? Definitely not. It's really disappointing when the dim sum in a small city in Wisconsin is better than the dim sum at a Chinatown in an urban city. read more
This is now my favourite dim sum place after the one one dundas (seafood noble house) closed down. I've been here multiple times and they have delivered each and every time, that is why the restaurant is so packed. This time, my friends ordered something new and I really enjoyed it: steamed pork meat and crab meat soup dumpling fried eggplant with stuffed shrimp in soy sauce pan fried prok dumplings pan fried bean curds skin rolls these new dishes were very flavourful and delicious...but then again can you really go wrong with dim sum? their originals (sui mai, har gow, squid tentacles, fried shrimp dumplings) were really good also. I'd recommend trying a new dish when you go for dimsum cuz it might just blow your mind! read more

Rol San makes it among my top favorite dim sum restaurants. While I've only had the chance to go once so far, the dim sum there blew me away. Unlike other dim sum places, they don't do carts here. instead you fill out which dishes you want on a form. As such if you're not someone who's super familiar with dim sum and doesn't know the dishes by name/description, this place may not be the best place for you. However if you are a dim sum veteran, you'll enjoy the fact that all the dishes are made to order ensuring that the food is hot and steaming by the time it comes to your table. Rol San has a ton of variety for dishes. My party probably got 8-10 different dishes when we ate here. Everything was good but some dishes that really stood out to me were their har gao, chicken feet, and spare ribs. Their har gao has a thin skin without being mushy and has the right amount of filling which are common issues I've had with other dim sum places. The chicken feet and spare ribs both were seasoned well/were made in flavorful sauces. Overall I'd recommend Rol San to anyone looking to get dim sum in Toronto. read more

What we ordered: Fried Squid Tentacle BBQ Pork Fried Rice Sweet and Sour Pork Garlic Snow Pea Leaves Black Sesame Paste Balls Rol San is one of the best place to go for Chinese food at 1 am, they don't close until 2am and Saturdays, they close at 4am. Starting with service. They approach you right away asking you how many people. After you get seated, they give you tea right away (Just note that they do charge $1 per person for the tea). It does get very busy in there, but they do have a lot of staff, so you can probably get their attention very easily. There are two different kinds of menu that they will give you, a yellow piece of paper and a menu book. With the yellow paper, it is dim sum (for example: bbq pork buns, fried squid tentacles, black sesame paste balls, shui mai (Pork dumplings)). Its just the basics for Chinese dim sum. I call it the dim sum paper . The menu has a variety of rice and noodles, soups and vegetables to pick from. BBQ Pork fried rice, sweet and sour pork and garlic snow pea leaves is from the menu book. Pretty standard food. The food came out fast, (around 7 mins) after we handed our sheets to the staff there. Food comes in large portions, so it is best when you have a big group, so you can all share. Squid Tentacle, fried evenly and it was really juicy. The snow pea leaves was not overly cooked (but it did have a lot of oil). BBQ fried rice was good but there wasn't much flavor to it. Sweet and sour pork wasn't bad except it was a little over sauced, as we ate to the bottom of the dish (but it can be a pro or a con depending on how you like it). Black Sesame balls was great except there was only a quarter of black sesame paste in the dough (be careful: its hot and spills easily). We asked for the bill, and it came with fortune cookies. Note that only accept Cash or Visa Card. Overall it is definitely a restaurant you want to visit when you crave Chinese food at 1am. THE MOST HORRIBLE SERVICE I had in Canada in my life: For those who didn't come to this restaurant yet, and for those who came here before but didn't suffer the extremely bad services here yet, PLEASE BEAWARE of what has happened to my family at this restaurant below: ----PREGNENT WOMEN BE AWARE---- We reserved a table for 7 people at 12:00am today, my wife and I came here on time. The waiter, a tall 50ish Cantonese guy, who claim himself as the manager, said they will only allow us to sit when at least half people arrived. My wife was pregnant and I told him our situation and our friends also called us saying they will arrive soon. He insisted that we cannot sit, even there were 4 big tables empty with no ones/reserved signs. His attitude was extremely rude and almost YELL at us with an angry face. He further howled "this is the restaurant policy". My question is, if this is your policy, you should tell us when we made the reservation so everyone will be more cautious about the time, and anyway we can choose not come to your restaurant, right? And whatever the customer complaint you don't have to explained in such a RUDE way, regardless of whether my wife is pregnant or not. ----ONE HOUR SITTING LIMIT---- Worsen, when another two friends arrived, we were finally allowed to sit on a table. After around 15 minutes, the same rude waiter came to our table with a fake smile, "I just come here to tell you that, we have a 1 hour sitting limit", pointing to the tiny text on the order paper, "and it starts when you guys sit here", this made us really upset because whatever the policy he mentioned, the restaurant told us nothing when we made this reservation. What are all of these attitudes about? Is this place still a restaurant? I cannot believe in 2018 this kind of terrible services and inhuman restaurant still exist. ----SPEND YOUR MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE---- Finally we choosed another Dim Sum restaurant not far away. This reminded me the same situation happened when we went to another Japanese restaurant couple weeks ago, we were treated extremely polite and they arranged us a quite table and everyone was polite and nice. If you care about your guests and your family, PLEASE SPEND YOUR MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE! read more

Rol San is an average looking Chinese restaurant with extraordinary food. Just don't walk in expecting a Michelin star decor. The dim sum choice is vast - you select what you want and mark it on the ordering sheet. The service is fast and staff efficient. Went in a larger group and tried almost all the dim sums on offer. Liked seafood and shrimp-pork the best. Short ribs was insane. It's served in a black pepper sauce and carries a punch. Give it a try when you are in Kensington. They are open until 4 AM on weekends. read more

I was really surprised by how big this place is on the inside! I think the seating area near the front isn't as nice, which is why some of the other reviews have commented on the overall setting, but the inside area was pretty nice! We went around 11am and already it was quite busy but not bad of a wait. The menu is pretty standard and in general it was fairly average. Only thing that I noticed was that they didn't have egg tarts - only milk tarts! The fried squid is slightly less golden or brown than I've had at other places and the custard bun wasn't runny (wasn't sure if we had ordered a Lau sa bao). Overall service was average - no complaints really. I would go back again. read more

Came here for lunch and had a pretty good experience. We ordered 8 dishes and it ended up being around $38. The portions are pretty generous and we did end up having leftovers so we thought it was worth it, though it is a little more expensive than normal for a dim sum place. The shumai was probably our favorite and I would definitely recommend getting that. The soup dumplings come with around six in a soup bowl, they aren't like the soup dumplings that are filled with soup but are still super good. Everything else was pretty standard dim sum, if you get the fried fish fillet, it comes with 6 pieces which was a good deal. All of the other dumplings and desserts we got were pretty good. Service wasn't too friendly but they were fast and we got our food in a very timely manner. The tea served with the food. I would definitely coming here if you're looking for standard dim sum (except without the dim sum carts). read more
This is my boyfriend's favourite dim sum place and it's the second time that he took me here. It's pretty good dim sum. It's got the standard dim sum items like siu mai and shrimp dumplings as well as deep fried items such as deep fried chicken wings. The best part about this is that it's an all-day dim sum place. On weekends it gets pretty busy. There's two large seating areas - one at the front and one at the back. The first time I went, both seating areas were packed and we had to wait in line for some time before being seated. Overall I enjoy the food here but expect minimum service. You will be given a piece of paper with the menu items in both Chinese and English. You mark down whatever you want and they bring the food to you. read more
My friend called me up in the morning on January 1st to ask if I was game for dim sum. Salad in my fridge or Chinese food : it was a no brainer so I went for the latter. I was naive and thought that I would be the only Torontonian out at 10:00 AM on New Year's Day; however, I was so wrong! The subway was packed as was the streetcar I rode on along with Rol San. We waited for a good twenty minutes, but it was worth it. Rol San is quite clean compared to some other places in the area. I didn't realize how big this joint was; they have two dining rooms. Landed in Toronto and came straight here. Yes, we were very hungry and yes, this restaurant hit the sweet spot with us. No waiting, eating within 5 minutes of turning in our order. The dim sum pieces were larger than I've had elsewhere. The flavors were exceptional and the service was good. Would recommend Rol San for anyone interested in good food without the frills. read more
Dim sum was good here and everything came out steaming hot. They were able to accommodate 10 people without any issues, and it's open late! Also, the chili oil is super spicy. I've never been to a dim sum spot where it's this spicy. read more
Dim sum is dim sum is sim sum really. But I love it. I do prefer the ones where they come around with carts though. Funniest part was walking to the back part of the restaurant (I'd say 2/5ths I'm in the front and 3/5ths in the back you walk by the washrooms. Once we were seated I decided to visit them before lunch. When you open the door you're staring at the urinals so everyone walking by is staring right at whoever's going the bathroom. And it's a main throughway. Never seen that in my restaurant adventures anywhere. My daughter and wife didn't believe me until we left and I showed them and we all had a great laugh. read more
