Ordered some lunch from Roll Factory. All the rolls and sushi seem to be purple rice based. The salmon skin salad is really good, lots of crispy salmon skin, cucumber, crunchy onions and a delicious sesame dressing, will definitely get this again. I decided to try the musubis, the egg spam was a little better than the avocado spam but I wasn't a fan of the baked cook on the spam. The amount of rice was a little too much and the texture of the purple rice was slightly off putting but the flavors were good. I wish they had option for white rice as well as purple. 4 stars
Rollfactory by Straycat Kitchen is a fun little hidden gem tucked away in a brick alley in Old Town Pasadena. It's the kind of place you stumble upon and instantly feel cool for knowing about. The purple rice in everything there is such a fun and unique twist--definitely sets it apart from all the other sushi spots around. I got the salmon avocado roll, and it was fresh, creamy, and just the right size for a quick bite. The standout for me, though, was the egg spamasubi--it was flavorful, perfectly balanced, and honestly kind of addictive. The spot is small inside, but they do a nice job making it feel lively with lights dancing on the ceiling and colors glowing under the glass counter. It's the kind of place where you can pop in solo or bring a friend and not feel rushed. It's definitely more of a grab-and-go or quick lunch kind of spot, but that works perfectly with the chill vibes. There's a cute little courtyard right outside that feels almost secret and makes for a relaxing place to eat. I didn't try their poke bowls this time, but they looked fresh and colorful and full of variety--definitely on the list for next time. Service was fast and friendly, and everything felt really easy and relaxed. It's the kind of place where you can pop in solo or bring a friend and not feel rushed. Prices were decent for the area, especially considering the quality of the ingredients. I liked that the menu wasn't overwhelming--just solid, tasty choices. I love discovering places like this that do a couple things really well and have their own vibe. I'll probably be rolling back soon.
Roll Factory is tucked in a little alley way next to Plants Coffee. They have poke bowls, sushi, and bento boxes, and a few other items. I've been here twice and have gotten the poke bowls both times. I love their variety of toppings and sides, as well as the quality of their ingredients. I also like how they have purple rice here and they share about the benefits of eating purple rice. Overall, it's a great spot for lunch and I've always enjoyed my poke bowls here.
No stray cats here but what was here is a tasty poke bowl. Order the purple rice and salad half and half. The regular size is plenty of food for everyone except maybe an NFL guard or tackle. Take your time to pick out and add all the flavors and extras available. Enjoy a healthy lunch. ¡Bon appétit!
This could've put me in the Emergency Room. Roll Factory has officially lost all of my trust. Good evening friends and family. This review is less of a review and more of a warning/notice. Unfortunately, this isn't a pleasant write up but it's nevertheless necessary. My wife if and I periodically visit this place when in the Pasadena area. We normally get the spam musubi but this time she decided to get the chirashi bowl ($30), the unagi bowl, edamame, and the musibi, all to-go. I'm skeptical about raw fish from a place like this and prefer an official location for sushi like "Fish King" in Glendale, Ca that offers sushi grade fish in addition to an abundance of fresh seafood. But, because my wife took a chance on it and was my only option to eat, I gave it a try. The unagi bowl was good, a bit sweet, but I'd safely give it a 6.5/10. The edamame was solid. The musubi was the same as usual, 7.5/10. The $30 Chirashi bowl unfortunately wasn't pleasant 5/10. As I sit here writing this review hoping that I'm ok to go into work tomorrow since I ate a quarter piece of raw salmon that smelled spoiled and threw the rest in the trash. Although that gave me a bad feeling, I didn't want to be rude so I moved on to the next piece of raw fish I believe was tuna. Upon chewing the tuna and rice, a sharp bone stabbed me in the side of my tounge. I fetched the sharp bone to discover it wasn't a bone. It's a sharp piece of steel that resembles an old stretched out staple. My tounge has a hole in it and stings a bit, my sinuses hold a pungent funk from the peace of salmon, and I'm still hungry. This place has completely lost all of my trust and I warn of negligence and the safety of anyone who decides to eat here. I typically enjoy leaving fun, adventurous, visual movie script like reviews because I'm not one of those yelps who run to only leave bad experiences but this called for the attention of the establishment to not only make them aware, but also to protect the customers. This experience could've gone horrible and I wouldn't wish it on anyone else so please be alert when eating out. And to the owners of Roll Factory, mistakes do happen but there's a cut off and some things are completely inexcusable, this being one. See pics
I come here often during my lunch break because it's tasty, convenient, and quick. I oftentimes will get a salmon skin roll or a poke salad bowl, but my new favorite is a special request baked salmon bowl that the chef/owner will make for me. It's essentially the unagi bowl but with salmon instead. The salmon is cooked perfectly and served on a bed of purple rice (or mixed salad in my case) with some japanese radish/gobo, and a piping hot bowl of udon broth. I love it and am super grateful to the chef's flexibility in accommodating my request.
This place is a very small, casual business that serves mainly sushi, poke, and spam musubi (with some other add-ons like udon). The average price you may spend for an individual person ranges from $25-$30 for two-three items. I primarily order take-out and it would be more convenient to do the same (for the sake of parking). From the Door Dash app, it took 15-20 minutes to order and prepare the delivery. When I talk about service, I really mean the quick turnaround time between ordering and delivery, without messing up the order. This places is more than the average price of a usual poke bowl (does include two options for protein). What does make them unique is their option for purple rice which is embedded in majority of their menu items (e.g. sushi and Musubi). Some featured items to try include: Poke Bowl (choose regular or large), chirashi bowl, and a few common sushi rolls). From what I ordered, if you get the poke bowl, there was a larger ratio of rice to toppings which made it feel dry even when I mixed my bowl. However, it could be based on my choice of sauce (Yuzu Miso - gluten free). My bowl included: furikake, dried seaweed, sweet corn, green onion, cilantro, cucumber, salmon, ahi tuna, seaweed salad, tamago, purple rice (would try getting the purple rice!). 2/3 of the spam musubi options held together well with the ingredients. It was still soft, flavorful, and blended well. I wouldn't bother with ordering the Spam Avocado Musubi. The sauce and spam overpower the taste of avocado. It's another ingredient but doesn't add too much in taste or value to the appetizer. I've only had their menu items from delivery but again, the quality seems to stay consistent. Get food from here if you want something "healthy" and quick.
We ordered a large bowl with three proteins. The freshness of the fish was average, but they do offer purple rice, which is a rare find in poke bowls! Besides poke, their menu features a variety of other dishes, including rolls, musubi, udon, and miso soup. I appreciated the customer service--when we asked for additional sauces on the side, they were more than happy to accommodate. The prices are a bit higher than typical poke places, but I suppose the location plays a role in that since it's situated in a popular area in Pasadena.
Two years ago, what used to be $13 for a regular, two scoop protein bowl is now an astonishing $20 for the same thing. And you only get two toppings included. Is this the norm in Pasadena for a poke bowl? I got a half/half bowl with rice and greens, and a scoop of scallop and salmon. I regretted the scallop - it was rubbery and dry, definitely not fresh. There were gross bits of greens mixed together with my bowl - also not fresh. I was quite disappointed at my bowl. Too bad, because I used to like this place, back in the day (ahem, only 2 years ago) when it was $13.
Roll me up in a sushi roll and take me home because Roll Factory by Straycat Kitchen always takes care of my poke cravings. My boyfriend has taken me here twice and it just might become a regular sushi spot of ours soon. He's been here probably 10+ times before me though! I've gotten to build-my-own poke bowl and try the Chirashi Bowl here. Both of these were great and were served in such big portions. Both times, I got full after eating half and was able to save the other half for another meal. The regular build-your-own poke bowl comes with 2 sides and 2 proteins but you could go crazy with the toppings if you'd like. I mean, you can go nuts with the toppings! I usually ask for most of the toppings. I'm a salmon gal and I always get double scoop of salmon and when they say "2 scoops" they are much more generous with the scoops than what is advertised. The staff here are always so friendly, too. Everything in the Chirashi Bowl was made perfectly. From the generous sashimi pieces to the rice, I had such a fun time eating it and enjoyed the variety of toppings. I think Chirashi translates to "scattered sushi" which doesn't sound as pretty as it looks but it quickly became my favorite menu item because I get to try a little bit of everything! The sashimi isn't even the best part here because the rice is where it's really at. The rice has a slight sweetness to it and of course, the signature sushi rice texture. The sashimi has a tender, melt-in-your-mouth, smooth, silky texture, as it should! You can tell the chefs here do a great job. It's always fresh and you can taste it. I don't even feel guilty at all eating this because fish and rice are a complete meal full of vitamins, minerals, and protein. Needless to say, give Roll Factory by Straycat Kitchen a try! The poke and Chirashi Bowl are my jam but they also have tempura, rolls, sushi burritos, and more things to try. I'll definitely be back to try more things!
Super cute poki place! I checked in and got a free ice tea! (my order was over $30) I ordered the Chiriashi over rice. Which was so delicious and pretty! Love it. It was just what I wanted. Comes with a purple rice (black and white rice mix with sushi rice and vinegar + salt + sugar) So delicious! I am so much a fan!! No line on a Monday at 1:00. I beat the lunch rush I guess! Parking is in a structure next door that you'll have to pay for.
I was craving poke so time to use the Grubhub membership I have through Amazon. Stumbled upon this place and the reviews were good so I gave it a shot. I went with a regular salmon and yellowtail poke bowl with purple rice. All of the other ingredients are included in one of the pix. I found this bowl size to be quite a generous portion for one person. The fish pieces were small, however, and I've had bowls from other places with more fish. Also to note, some of the salmon had skin on it but it was easily removable. Everything tasted fresh and you're provided with various choices of ingredients to add to your bowl. My only complaint was that the sauce could not be tasted except on the rice. All in all, it satisfied the craving but this isn't a place that I'm going to seek out to visit again other than for convenience.
I had no real expectations prior to ordering (aside from Yelp reviews), but I am impressed! Tasty, great portions, fast delivery through GrubHub, and reasonable prices! I ordered their Chirashi today, which was $17.99 on GrubHub. It came with a good sized soup on the side. The Chirashi bowl itself was a pretty large size and filled solidly halfway with rice--purple rice, no less, which was a welcome surprise as I noticed many restaurants shrinking their portions over the past 18 months of Covid. The Chirashi came with tuna, salmon, albacore, yellowtail, shrimp and tamago--again, a great selection of fish. The fish cuts were big and thick. I'm only halfway through my meal and felt compelled to write a review. I'll happily return. Go straycat! read more
What the HOLY SMOKES! So I'm starving at my apartment and too lazy to cook anything. I was craving sushi so I figured I'd Uber Eats. Came across this gem. Wasn't expecting much off the food. I just thought it looked pretty because of the purple rice because that caught my eye. Maaaaan, it's gooooood. Like wow! Presentation and taste wise was great! The price isn't tooo bad. The quality of food made up for it. I ordered the Stray Cat Roll (6 pieces), Philly Roll (8 pieces), and 2 Spam Masubis. Please try if you're ever in the area. TRUFFLE + SALMON = dream combo What's special about Roll Factory over other million poke places: - Sauces are delicious! Get the sauces on the side so it's fresher by the time it gets home. Their Truffle ponzu is super duper flavorful! I really also liked their Spicy Chili and Yuzu Miso sauce (very refreshing). Both of these sauces were jam packed in flavor. A little goes a long way so I really liked it to have on the side. - Delicious purple rice & brown rice!! -Fresh Salmon & Tuna and greens -They have tamago (egg) for no extra charge! -Big happy portions, well we got large. read more

It's a small place in the alley with limited seating inside but there's tables outside. I got a regular poke bowl and the servings were pretty big. It is on the pricier side of poke but I think the portions make it worth and avocado isn't considered an extra like most places. I really like the toppings offering and the choice of purple rice as well. Service is kind and good, will swing by again for a poke fix! read more

My girlfriends and I have virtual dinners every week and this week's theme was poke. Roll Factory was one of the options with high and promising reviews. The establishment is slightly hidden inside a hipster alley with other small shops, has very limited outdoor seating, and less foot traffic. I ordered the half & half bowl with purple rice and salad, and all tuna. The bowl came with more rice than salad, but the rice was seasoned to taste like sushi rice. Tuna were decently sized and fresh with no fishy aftertaste. There's a lot of interesting sauces, but I opted for the safe ones; sesame shoyu and garlic ponzu. Everything mixed in with the add-on's tasted great. I had no problem finishing the entire portion on my own. I'm happy that Roll Factory lived up to the reviews and delivered an affordable and filling dinner. Don't forget to check-in on Yelp for complimentary free drink. Slightly above average poke restaurant located in a small alleyway in Old Town Pasadena. The decor inside had a very cute vibe and fits right in the shopping area. I ordered the small bowl (2 sides and 2 protein) with half purple rice and salad. I chose tuna and salmon (they were out of yellowtail), for the sides I chose tamago and seaweed salad. While the fish and toppings were all fresh, the sauces was not very flavorful and I only received one very small thin piece of tamago with my order. Overall the experience was average, but for the price point and taste there are plenty other poke choices in the area. read more

I have finally found the Poke place I will be my go to whenever I am in Pasadena. I have been trying to find a place where I love both their fish and their sides and I have finally found the spot. My main gripe is about the limitation of sides compared to other poke places, but that issue becomes null when you see the sheer size of the poke bowl they give you for a large, but I digress. For the poke bowl, they either have Regular or Large size, with the bowls giving you 2 or 3 scoops of both sides and protein respectively. The poke bowl they provide is on pricier side compared to many other places, with the large clocking in at around 18-19$, but it is worth it for how much they give you with each scoop. I personally got the large bowl with a purple rice base. The sides I chose was the seaweed salad, crab meat, and spicy crab meat. I got two scoops of salmon and one scoop of tuna. And finally topped it off with almost all of their toppings and mixes. My favorite part of all of this though was variety of yummy sauces. I personally got a combination of garlic ponzu, spicy mayo, and black sauce, but their options seem super varied and would love to try more when I can. Overall, a solid 9/10 poke bowl that I would love to go again and would highly recommend anyone to check out this if you haven't already. read more

This is my favorite poke place Ive been coming for 6 years now and I come here all the time. The manager/owner is pretty rude but the other workers are extremely kind and they give pretty good portions. I recommend all the friends and family to go here but honestly beware of this owner. He fought me once about a free yelp check in lemonade. The other time he fought me because his lemonade was extremely sour and when I told him this he said I made it myself it's good when in reality it was undrinkable. The guy is just really sensitive about his lemonade I guess. But, that was only two times where I've had encounters with him. Usually the other staff is really nice and the poke is one of my favorites. They also give stamp cards which you can use to earn a free bowl. read more

My daughter and I came on a recommendation from a neighbor. We are so happy with the food here. Superman burrito W1 with purple rice was so delicious, like eating a poke bowl as a hand roll without the seaweed paper. The chirashi bowl, which comes with yummy purple rice, is also very delicious. I am not sure why it took me so long to try Roll Factory, but my husband and I both went in recently and ordered Poke Bowls to go. Both of the individuals who took our orders were incredibly sweet and patient while we struggled with our indecisiveness. I am very picky with poke and am usually not easily impressed, but these poke bowls were really good! The fish was super fresh, the toppings were delicious, their signature purple rice is AMAZING, and they have so many yummy sauces to decide from. I did not have any of the regular sushi rolls, but I can imagine given our experience with the poke bowls that the sushi would be just as good. One thing I did note on the menu is that they charge about $14 dollars, give or take, for a 8 piece Philly roll, which is a little steep for a basic roll like that in my opinion, but I thought the poke bowl was a great value! I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to dine-in here. There isn't too much indoor space, but there is beautiful patio seating in the courtyard if someone wanted to sit outside. read more

This is a Japanese poke/sushi café, but they also sell soft serve ice cream. They used to be called Stray Cat Poke & Dessert I am not a poke girl, so I can't speak about their food. I have only been here for the soft serve ice cream. In the beginning, they used to sell Taiyaki ice cream, however, they no longer have them. I don't know why because it was so popular. It is so sad because, this is the only Taiyaki spot in Old Town Pasadena. This place is directly across from IPIC theater. I do like their ice cream selections such as Milk, Matcha, Rose & Berry and Black Sesame. They can also mix two flavors together. Staff are very friendly and will allow you to try samples. This place is super small, so it is more like a to go place. Overall, I will upgrade my review if they bring Taiyaki back. They do sell sushi roll, noodle and drinks. This is a great spot to come for food and dessert together. Price is reasonable, so come check it out read more

Roll Factory Stray Cat is located in the Alley of Old Pas next to Sushi Roku. I decided on the large poke bowl (3 sides + 3 proteins) and hubby got the Rose Roll and Old Pas Musubi. With Yelp Check-In, you can get an ice tea or lemonade with min $30 purchase. Which honestly is not that hard here if you just order 2 items. I like how everything is prepared with wild purple rice! It's so much healthier too! For my poke bowl I got the salmon, albacore and yellowtail for proteins. And I choose seaweed salad, tamago egg and avocado for the 3 sides. But it also comes with choices of toppings and sauces. This is the most filling Poke bowl I never had, however I could had definitely use more sauces. I don't think the worker put enough sauce to satuated everything for such a large bowl. Hubby and I really enjoyed the Old Pas Musubi. This pretty much has almost all the ingredients in my poke bowl plus spam and wrapped in a seaweed. It really felt like a musubi burger! You will need both hands to eat this. The Rose Roll was okay, it has shrimp tempura, cucumber and avocado. Overall we had a nice meal here, and would definitely come back when we crave a poke bowl again in the area. read more

I am updating my review as I wanted to try the sushi again from here. I'm really glad that I did. The sushi was really terrific. It was some of the best prepared and most flavorful sushi in Pasadena. They did a wonderful job with the presentation and I really like the purple rice. In addition, the rolls are tightly formed so they don't fall apart like most rolls do. I thought the black dragon was the best roll, followed by the caterphila roll. The classic rolls were also very good, the Philly and the salmon avocado, in addition to even the California roll. I will definitely go back and enjoy some other rolls. read more

Poke & ice cream joint in one of the alleys in Pasadena! They have 5 possible soft serve flavors but only 4 swirling at a time & a very limited number of toppings to choose from ---rose berry: unique rose flavor, it's good swirled with the milk flavor ---matcha soft serve in a fish shaped pastry with custard filling: matcha is good but very milky ---poke: even the small was tons of food but I love their topping options especially fried garlic and fried onions! If you check in you get free tea with your poke NOTE: doesn't look like there's a bathroom in here so they have wet naps for those sticky ice cream situations when ice cream gets runny! read more

PORTIONS. ARE. HUGE. Seriously - I ordered a medium bowl here, and it was bigger than my face. The fish portions are generous as well. Their truffle sauce with ponzu is SO unique!! I usually only ever get aloha shoyu or some variation of that, whenever I go to Poke places, but I'm so happy I felt a little more adventurous here. When I asked to try the truffle ponzo sauce, they mixed it in with some salmon for me to taste! This is HUGE haha! Many other places just let you dip your tongue in a sampling cup of the sauce, which isn't a great way to get a feel for the sauce. But wait! There's more! There's also delicious taiyaki served here! I love how they have a wide variety of flavors to choose from, unlike other taiyaki places that I've been to. You have the option of mixing two flavors of ice cream, as well as getting two filling flavors! I ordered a Black Sesame + Milk Taiyaki with Custard and Red Bean filling. You're allowed as many toppings as you'd like. Overall, a really underrated place to grab poke + dessert. This has become one of my favorite poke places to go to because AGAIN, THE PORTIONS ARE HUGE, and ice cream after a meal is always a great idea!! read more
