Finally tried Kai since it's only a couple blocks away. It is BYOB, so that was nice. We ordered the VIP, spicy tuna, spicy California, and Dynamite. The sushi itself was pretty good. Not my fav in Chicago but for the price and convenience, we may get it again. My problem was with the service... I called ahead and they told us they had tables available. We arrived and my husband asked the front for a table. She said they were full and started to walk away. He asked if she could put us on a waitlist and she did. Things get busy, we understood. We only waited about 10 minutes which isn't bad and got a table outside since we had our dog. The waitress dropped off waters right away but then didn't come back for like 20 minutes. My husband asked for an ice bucket for the champagne which she never brought so he finally went inside and got one. She finally took our order and our food took another 20+ minutes. Again not too bad for a food wait. We ate our food, finished our drinks and sat for another 20 minutes before my husband just brought the check inside because she never came back. I travel for a living and have had some mind-blowing sushi, including in Japan. I'll admit that when I arrived at Kai I was a little concerned. It's nothing to write home about in its appearance. A server was sweeping up broken glass in the little dining room. I ordered the seared scallops roll and the special tuna roll to go. While I waited about 10 minutes there was no one eating inside and one couple partaking of their dinner outside. I carried my food back to my hotel 20 minutes away. It was sadly packed in plastic rather than a compostable container, but at least it wasn't styrofoam. The special ginger sauce was in a separate small container. Shockingly good sushi. What they lack in ambience they make up for in extremely fresh, highly delicious ingredients. My rolls were innovative and perfectly flavored.
