Came here to get the infamous $5 sandwiches, but they were sold out before 2 pm on a weekday. I will be back for those. We ended up getting salami, cheese and olives from the deli. They two men helping us were extremely helpful and generous. We had no idea what to get so we asked for recommendations. They offered us free samples (same size as the actual cuts when you purchase), which is unheard of. Their recommendations were delicious, so I asked what cheese to pair with them. Again, their recommendation was spot on. For 1/4 lb each of two different types of salami and 1/4 lb of cheese, they total was just about ($9). ABSOLUTE STEAL. Don't even get me started with the quality. Top notch. A small carton of olives was about $3 or so. I'm generally not a fan of olives unless I eat them in Europe because they just taste so much better. The olives here taste just like those half way across the world. We also ended up getting a bottle of wine and some crackers. With everything included, the total was $32. Again, ABSOLUTE STEAL. Went in to check out the sandwich everyone raves about and wasn't disappointed. The bread was great with a little bit of crispness, the meats were all freshly sliced and delicious, a little bit of cheese. Not much else to say other than a really solid meaty sandwich with no veggies. Outside of the sandwich, you can find lots of grocery items imported from Italy and a fresh deli section. The market is in a strip mall, parking can be a bit of a challenge and there definitely can be a line, especially at lunch, of people grabbing the sandwiches. read more

Could have sworn I left a review many years ago, but can't find it. Anyways, I've been getting The Sandwich for about 13 years. Ever since I graduated and moved further away, I always buy 4-5 of the sandwiches when I'm in the area. Yes, 4-5 sandwiches. For myself. For almost every meal for the next 2-3 days. THAT is how much I love The Sandwich and how bad my cravings for it are. There are a couple varieties of The Sandwich depending on what they have available that day, but it's always the simple perfect combination of cured meats, cheese, and olive oil in fresh baked bread. Oh, and you don't get to choose which variety you want. They are all The Sandwich. Tip 1: Make sure you have plenty of water on hand cause The Sandwich will make you thirsty! Tip 2: You used to order The Sandwich from Rosario himself and watch him make it right in front of you. Now they have a crate at the cashier full of the sandwiches wrapped in pink butcher paper. Finally got THE SANDWICH. It is a great sandwich. The quality of the meat is so good and it's perfectly delicious in it's simplicity. The bread is soft with a nice crisp crust. It doesn't need much else besides the drizzle of quality oil with the meat and cheese. I love that it still sells for $6. Line moved quickly and I grabbed the pink wrapped sammy from the wooden box next to the register. Rosario was there hustling out front when I arrived and moved to his chair, where he has been overseeing this local small but packed Italian market for decades when he's not helping customers. I wish my Italian grandparents were still with us, they would love visiting this shop. I also grabbed some amazing meaty, soft Castelvatrano olives and a small package of sliced capicolla from the deli counter. Love this market and happy I was able to roll through. read more

Seeing the owner went well. Always great to see him and his youthful glow. What wasn't glowing is picking up their famous sandwich in pink wrap in mid-morning only to grapple with day old sandwiches! The quantity of meat is on point, but wish (and suggesting) that the "next generation" running the Roma show remove the meat from the surplus sandwiches from the previous day and plop it on fresh bread. Their fresh bread is 40 percent of what makes this sandwich so GREAT. I was very, VERY disappointed with the sandwiches today. read more

I hesitate to write this review, because Roma makes the best Italian sandwiches I have ever had and I don't want them to get busier than they already are. I don't even live in the LA area and only stop by when I'm driving through Pasadena. Since I discovered them, I've driven through LA four times and have been there three of those times. I usually buy a few sandwiches for the road, along with a fizzy Italian blood orange beverage and a bag of chips. One time, I was supposed to bring one home for my family, but I ate it. These things are hard to resist! I don't know why these sandwiches are so good, because it's a pretty basic thing: meat, cheese, and some type of yummy bread that makes me salivate just thinking about it. I'm so happy to see Rosario's place is still good and that they're all well. You can still see him at the front of the door. They do limit people inside but it goes fast with masks being required with markings on the floor. They do have the sandwiches near the register and the veggie sandwich near the deli area. Very nice people, the line goes quick and they take card. I read about "the Sandwich" on Yelp and the internet for a while, and I decided to finally try one today....I ventured out of my Covid bunker and traveled on the 110 north. Along the side of the historic Arroyo Seco freeway, were camps, and colorful tents. I wonder if it was like this also during the Depression. Roma Market is in a small plaza across the street from a large CVS. The market itself if tinier than it appears in photos found on the internet. I saw Rosairo (the man) sitting bear the drink coolers. Behind the cashier is the deli where the famous sandwiches are prepared. There were a couple of people socially distanced in line waiting at the deli. But I noticed there was a box with several "sandwiches" next to the cashier. I grabbed an RC Cola (for nostalgia) and went to the register. I used Apple pay, and went to my car to eat. I unwrapped the sandwich from the pink wrapper, it was prepared in a large, crusty French roll. There was a buttery spread on the top and bottom, and 1/4" of meats and cheeses. The bread was very good, as was the buttery spread. The sandwich itself was very tasty, but it wasn't the best I've had. I still remember and seek a replacement for the sandwiches from the legendary Belly Buster in Alhambra. It was a good experience, a good eat. A nice way to escape from Covid. read more

All fresh frozen from Italy. I'll buy 5-6 thin crust frozen pizzas from Svila, Italy for my freezer. Burrata, Margarita, Black Truffles, are my favorites. Italian wine. I've heard and read about 'the sandwich' and it seemed like it was worth a trip to go get. The lot was pretty full even in the afternoon so I was worried that they wouldn't be available. I looked around/browsed the market space and it was pretty small with a lot of items you could get elsewhere. I eventually saw the big pink pyramid of sandwiches at the counter and stood in line. I figured I might as well grab two since I was really hungry along with some chips and a soda. I'm definitely in the minority here but I thought it was okay. I might have gone when they didn't have their regular 'good bread' but the sandwich was super dry and had me coughing up every bread crumbs every other bite. read more

To round out 2018, here is a final review. I've grown up near this neighborhood Italian market. Over the years, I've popped into this small market in Pasadena, CA, on rare occasions for pantry items, but never tried the highly raved about pre-made sandwiches until just the other day. The sandwiches are made at the back deli counter, wrapped in pink butcher paper and placed by the deli slicer, available to grab and go. The sandwiches are all the same from what I understand from the cashier, but on my two visits the bread and meats on the sandwich were different. I came in looking for taralli crakers, I don't much care for the brand they carry, and also picked up a pre made sandwich. I will admit, I had a moment in my car while devouring this sandwich where time, and everything else seemed to stand still while I savored every single bite, and I wondered what I had been missing all of these years. The bread was perfect with the slightest chew, the olive oil on the sandwich bread was delectable, and the spicy salami, and mortadella...possibly capicola were just the right balance. For $5.50 out the door, this light sandwich would keep me satiated for a few hours, but definitely not a filling sandwich by any means. Fast forward a few days later on a Saturday, I had to share the sandwich experience with my spouse, and the sandwich was altogether forgettable, bread was hard and crunchy, and the meats were slightly different than the original sandwich I tired. What was so magical one day, was just average and not worth another try the next...did I taste ham? and I am not a fan of deli ham, the flavors were not that great, my husband not impressed and I was not either. I really wanted to try the Ugly Bread found only on the weekends, raved about by Yelper, Will S. but the loaf of bread is SO huge and I was running errands and not going home any time soon and did not want it sitting in the car all day. Curiosity still has me though, sometime when I am with someone to split with, I will make the splurge and try it! I wished they made smaller loaves of the ugly bread, actually after reading Will S's review, I guess they do, but they were out of small loaves the Saturday I was there. The selections of drinks, oils, freshly grated parm, and pantry items had me wishing I had more time to take in all of the delights. Not a fancy or modern market, this market has been here for at least 50 years, I am guessing, but what they house is the Italian good stuff. Roma Market is known for "The Sandwich" and I've come a few times to see people lined up outside the door for the chance to get one (or five). It's made with mortadella, capicola, salami, mozzarella, and olive oil on soft bread. When I first walked in, I was looking around confused about where the sandwiches were. The kind lady at the cashier asked, "You here for the sandwich?" So grateful that she didn't leave me to roam around in confusion! Tip: the sandwiches are in the box next to the cashier, so just get in line and ask!
