Roman Castle is a friendly if divey traditional restaurant. Our waitress was super nice. The coffee was good, and there is a lot of stuff from which to choose on the menu; maybe too much. You get a lot with a meal. I ordered the fish fry special with the walleye. In addition to the fish I received slaw, a potato choice, soup and bread. My girlfriend got the cheese ravioli, which also came with a bunch of stuff and she needed to box it up at the end. I get the sense they do a lot of boxing here. The celebrity chefs on those restaurant shows (i.e. Ramsay, Irvine) would have a field day here, I'm sure. I must say the fish was rather underwhelming. I didn't expect much but it tasted kind of blah. The bread was hot and fresh, though, and it was tasty along with the minestrone soup. My mashed potatoes were lumpy and thrown into a little bowl with some gravy of questionable quality. The slaw looked pretty bad but actually tasted OK. The fish fry special was all-you-can-eat, but I could only consume the three pieces they presented me with initially. The fish was put on the plate on top of some funky-looking greens, which really didn't need to be there as a garnish because it didn't look too good. Overall the food is average but you get a lot for your dollar. The server really deserves high marks. She was great on refills and very kind. Roman Castle is a comfortable place to grab a meal and it surely beats fast food so if you have enough time, stop in. read more

We stop at the restaurant on our way back home to Illinois. We were craving some Italian food. The restaurant it's not so big. The waitress very nice. We have decided on some meals but unfortunately they were out of fish, Aldo they didn't have fruit punch for the kiddos. The bread was pretty tasty just didn't taste like Italian bread , more like regular, bigger size bun. Overall the food was good. read more

Absolutely disgusting! Our first time ordering from here. We ordered carry out, so we didn't find out our food was nasty until we got to our room. Ordered CAJUN CHICKEN/SHRIMP pasta. It had nothing Cajun about it. Over cooked pasta, sweet marinara sauce with no spices but PLENTY OF CANNED VEGGIES. Terrible. We spent a pretty good amount for our dinners. I called to speak to a manger about our meal. I was willing to try something else. A manger wasn't available and the girl who answered simply asked what was wrong as if she was going to fix it and said OH call back in the morning. Um, NO! This place has phenomenal food!!!! The portions are huge but the flavor does not disappoint. The chicken noodle soup, minestrone soup, cheese quesadilla, and the burgers (I ordered the house burger and the mushroom swiss burger) are perfect examples of delicious homemade comfort food. The french fries are soft on the inside but crunchy on the outside. The cheese quesadilla had little char bits on the outside that tasted soooo good. Everything I ordered only came to $30 which is surprisingly cheap for the amount of food served. The service was fast (could barely finish the prior meal before receiving the next), and Julie, our waitress, was amazing. She took our free appetizer coupon (got off of yelp from checking in) with no problem and got our order perfect. This is a great place to go. read more

Needless to say, this was everything & more; great selection, fresh veggies, wonderful pasta & sauces, homemade bread, a plethora of deserts etc all served with plenty to share. Our waitress disappeared for quite a while, her other two tables were finishing up, finally she showed up with both their bills, boxes and bags for leftover. She was about to pass us again, I grabbed her attention asking our soup and salad 1st, before our entrees come, We understood our entrees took time, kitchen was busy; she still waited until our combo plate came to bring us soup, dinner rolls, salad, suddenly we got almost everything! By the time our entrees came we already finishing eating. No one collected our dirty plates or filled water, I still had only a glass of wine for drink,She passed us and bus person passed us who could clear plates out. 5 stars for this price range. I admit I wasn't expecting much because of the big menu, which usually means lots of microwaved food. The soups were home-made and were delicious, not institutional tasting at all. All of our meals seemed freshly prepared and were plentiful. Everyone was happy with the taste and quality of the food. Our server, Lauryn(?), was very friendly and attentive. The owner was also making sure all guests were satisfied. The bill seemed ridiculously low, but it was correct. I would gladly go back. Ahhh, the Roman Castle... I remember it fondly. As we blew by town after town on Interstate 94 on our way to Madison from Minneapolis, our hunger finally got the better of us as we pulled off in Mauston, a very small town boasting mostly fast-food and chain establishments. Not wanting either, we decided to go ahead and try the Castle. While the feel of this place is that of a typical Denny's or Carrow's, I actually really enjoyed my experience. The staff was friendly, things weren't busy on a Friday night, and the food was decent. Maybe my expectations were low, but I left surprisingly content. My girl ordered the spaghetti and I ordered the Friday night fish fry. Both meals were simple but very satisfactory, like something I would make at home. And prices are more than reasonable considering our entire meal and drinks cost around $20. Yup, I happily say better than expected. read more

Stopped in here for a quick breakfast before getting back on the road. We opted for the breakfast buffet and it was pretty bad - barely ate half a plate of food. The service was horrible. Nearly every table was filled so I understand they may have been overwhelmed but that does not excuse not coming back to check on the table at least once. I asked for hot sauce three times over a 20 minute span before I physically got up and walked with the waitress to grab it. This place captures the feel of a family restaurant. I'm sure the service would've been better at a slower time of day (I stopped in around 10:30am on the weekend). We stopped here on our way up north after reading the reviews. Service: 5 stars! Our servers (we had 3 rotating and helping us) were all prompt, super friendly and on top of things. No complaints, couldn't have asked for nicer ladies. Food: My husband got the ribs - he really debated because he loves ribs and so often gets disappointed because many places do them so poorly. He actually was NOT disappointed and pleasantly surprised. I ordered the shrimp linguini. The shrimp was great, the linguini sauce - ehh. It was kind of bland, but the cheesy garlic bread that comes with it was delicious! I also upgraded to the French onion soup which had same gooey cheese and was delightful. This is probably not someone I would pick if I just drove by, the parking lot could use attention. The wait staff were quick and friendly and the menu is varied and value priced. The meal came with a homemade roll bigger than a cats head. We started off with seafood chowder that was amazing and flavorful. There is a senior menu for those 60 that is $7.95 and has a wide selection. We ordered fried chicken and it was delightful. We would stop here again if we ever get back this way. A strong, non-chain restaurant. I recommend to anyone looking for a homecooked meal. If I am in Mauston again, I will return. Homemade bread and soup was so tasty. Huge menu offers something for everyone. Italian beef, burgers, fettucine alfredo, meatball sandwich, chicken parmesan and patty melt were all reported as delish. The BLT was underwhelming to someone who wanted more bacon on board, and a grilled cheese was partially soaked in the pickle juice garnish. Not bad given 30+ of us traveling for baseball popped in unannounced to get out of the heat between baseball games nearby. Service wasn't perfect, but it was friendly and accommodating. We helped speed up ordering & accuracy by writing our own orders on the backs of paper place mats which also simplified billing by family. We bussed a few of our own dishes. 2-5-19 met friends here for a birthday dinner. Ordered the grilled pork chop special. Service was fine the salad was ok but the pork chop was tough and had a lot of fat. I was able to eat half of it and the rest I left. Baked potato was good but the green beans were probably carryover from lunchtime. It seemed that a attempt at pan frying them to get back the lost crispness didn't work. They were as soft and mushy as room temperature pudding. A real turn off and should have been noticed when platting. I would have complained but I've eaten here before. A couple years ago before the fire and the fancy remodeling and the fancy square European plates the food had more care put in it. Now it seems that it's just a place to work for much of the staff. Many of the people I know go here because it's Denny's or 20 miles. Sometimes the food is good and a week later you order the same thing and it sucks. But in their defense that is the way it is in many of the places in the area. I'm not a fan of Denny's but what comes out of the kitchen is the same today as it was two years ago or even ten years ago. read more

WOW this dining experience left me confused. The menu is massive and it doesn't appear they missed any type of cuisine....they even market "Fresh Daily". You can get yourself a heaping load of potato skins or liver and onions or even Chinese. I bet the meatloaf would have been a safe option but we opted for the American pizza. The crust slightly resembled that of day old mealy biscuits and the sauce was like tomato paste with a sprinkle of oregano. The salad was crazy wet like drinking a glass of water with each bite, which helped lighten the thick homemade ranch dressing. Onto the kids meal....well it came with coleslaw??? Not a fruit cup or applesauce but yellow shredded coleslaw. The service however, was not bad which is why we're rating them with 2 . We ended up taking the pizza with us and left it for FREE at the ball field for any takers. Maustons highest rated restaurant left us wishing we would have ate across the street at Denny's. read more

Read the fish fry reviews, we decided to give it a try. They have a special menu with a lot of selections at reasonable price. The meal comes with a huge roll and choice of soup or salad. All you eat cod was delicious. I was too full to take a second helping of the fish that was offered by our friendly waitress. I did ask if I could get a cinnamon roll to take home. Unfortunately we were there too early as they were just getting started baking them. The owner does all the baking which accounts for the freshness. Stoped to pick up lunch. We ordered two bacon cheese burgers and two patty melts. The staff was very friendly and helpful. All the burgers came with fries and a soup. The buns on the cheeseburgers were yummy and fresh but too large to really make eating it easy or fun. The burgers were cooked pretty well done- not juicy. The tomato bisque was good. Fries just fine though not salted. I'd prefer to not stop here again, but if I had to that would be okay. read more

Ordered Chicken De'von and got a chicken breast with broccoli and two slices of processed cheese food. We found this as we were driving to Milwaukee for the weekend. It was a gem! We ordered two different types of breakfast skillets and the AMAZING homemade rolls were our toast of choice! (Highly recommend versus regular toast!) We saw that the cinnamon rolls were a must, so of course had to get one! It is literally bigger than our heads!! And only $5! The owner was lovely as well.
