We were lucky enough to be invited to lunch at the Roman Castle Italian Restaurant this past weekend and it was a fantastic time. The food was excellent, the service delightful and well done. We feel like we discovered a treasure and will be sure to visit whenever we are traveling in the area. I don't think I have ever had a better Gyro and my husband loved the homemade chicken and dumpling soup that is made right there in the kitchen. The owners Alex and Tammy work hard to make this restaurant stand out and it shows. So many items are made right there from the bread to the excellent coleslaw to many other items. If you're looking for some home cooked food some of it is and the stuff that is is pretty good, aka the soups, bread and things on the menu that say they are. We got the lasagna(home made), steak w/ noodles and shrimp and also a burger. The lasagna was good, one of the steaks was cooked to order the other wasn't, one person like the noodles another person didn't, the burger was good except it was salty. I've only eaten at Roman Castle three times, but every time is better than the last. The waitstaff are incredibly kind and attentive to their customers' needs and the food is great. Service: Top notch. I've been blessed to have the same waitress twice and she even remembered us. The staff are always quick, courteous, and knowledgeable about the menu and food served. I couldn't be more impressed. Food: It varies, honestly. I'm a picky eater, but can usually find something I like. I ordered the cajun chicken alfredo in the past, as well as the regular chicken alfredo, and both times the chicken has been rather fatty and hard to chew. The sauce was great both times, the noodles were perfectly al dente, and the cheesy garlic bread was heavenly. I ordered one of the antipastas on my third visit, and aside from the overpowering feta cheese, I was content. It's often hit or miss, but I have heard nothing but great things about the spaghetti and the lamb they serve. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience. I love the staff and the price and I could suffer a great dish with a few issues just to dine here occasionally. read more

Three meals for the price of one! Absolutely worth the minute drive past culvers or the other chain diners on the exit, and the place you should go if you are hungry between Madison and Minneapolis. Surprisingly fresh and homemade food, despite the divey appearance. I've never seen dinner rolls so big before! I tried the eggplant parm, despite having many sorry attempts at the dish at much nicer restaurants... But I was sold on it by our waitress who insisted it was made from thick sliced eggplant that day and not too fried. It was greasy but good, and I was not disappointed. VALUE. On my way to Madison I wanted to stop for a meal; I try to find local spots and the Roman Castle came up first on Yelp. The staff were super friendly and the menu offered more than you'd expect: burgers, pastas, pizzas and other entrees. I ordered the mushroom swiss burger. It comes rather well done if you don't specify. Burgers, at $7, come with fries, a bowl of soup, and a large warm dinner roll. Together it was all a bit much to finish. The soup (minestrone) was ok. The noodles were soft. I give 4 for the surprisingly good service and value. Support local. read more

My husband and I came here on a Friday night for a quick meal. We drove through Mauston looking for a place for an appetizer and a beer and well this pretty much the only place in Mauston that looked half way decent. It actually said Italian Grill but I did not find much "Italian" about it there were wine bottles hanging on the wall but it looked more like a cafe than an Italian Grill yes they had pizza and some pastas but most restaurants do. We ordered the potato skins for an appetizer and they were ok could have made them at home. Then we ordered a Garlic Chicken ranch bacon pizza. It was good but ultimately I could have totally made it at home and the dough was a bit doughy. We ended up taking a Cinnamon Roll to go for breakfast the next morning and that was very good! Wow. Very, very surprised. Don't let the dive-y ness and old fast-food restaurant fool you. Almost everything was homemade. Dinner rolls the size of my head, delicious burgers, homestyle dinners that my parents loved. It fixed a case of the hangrys way better than any fast food could. We had lunch at roman castle on the way to Milwaukee after leaving the wetherby's cranberry farm in warrens, wi. We had chili with a chicken salad sandwich and chicken dumpling soup with a side salad. Service was great as well as quick. Price was perfect for a quick lunch. Everything was delicious. read more

Ordered food to be delivered to Best Western. There was 3 of us. First order was an Italian Beef sandwich. Bread was cold and mushy. Second order was lasagna with a side order of gyro meat. Lasagna was room temp and so was the gyro meat. Lasagna was ok but the gyro meat was good. Third order was a gyro sandwich and she loved it. Took a little over an hour to get the food. Soup came with some of our meals. Our options were chicken dumpling or minestrone. I'm 99% sure the soup was cream of broccoli. If it wasn't for the gyro we probably wouldn't order here again. read more

This place is magical! The food was truly amazing: nearly everything is made from scratch, including salad dressings, GIANT homemade rolls, and homemade butter! We had soups, salads, pasta, and meat dishes, and we were totally floored by the quality, value, and service. We loved it so much we went back for breakfast the next day! The skillets and omelets and pancakes and French toast were outstanding. We had two servers, Jessie and Tammy, and they were absolutely wonderful in every way! I am planning a trip back to Mauston just to go eat here again. I'm sure they will be famous soon and mobbed with tourists, so go before you can't get a table! read more

We got breakfast at about 11:30 and it was highly sub-par. The coffee was weak and tasted nothing like coffee. I had asked for added ham to my omelette and it came without the ham, but the waitress did not check on us until we were done eating so I ate most of it anyway. My wife and I live in Mauston, and we decided to try this place because there aren't a lot of options in Mauston. We weren't expecting a five star experience, but we were expecting better than what we got. We were here on a Wednesday night around 530. Our server was very friendly. We ordered mozzarella sticks, I had the cajun pasta with shrimp, and my wife had shrimp linguini. Our meals came with our choice of soup or salad and I ordered a ceasar salad, she had the French onion soup. Two big rolls of bread also came complimentary. We received our soup and salad (along with the bread) almost immediately. My "ceasar" salad was not a ceasar salad... It had onions, green peppers, and cucumbers on it. They simply took there garden salad and put parmesan cheese and ceasar dressing on it. They also have there salads pre made and they sit in a refrigerator until they're ordered, so they are not fresh. My wife's French onion soup had bits of random vegetables in it like peas, carrots, and a lima bean in it. Our server actually told us that she thought the cook accidentally spilled these into the soup from another soup. Which, in my opinion, is a little unsanitary. The rolls of bread were heated in the microwave (we know cuz we watched it happen) but the bread was still pretty good and it was soft and warm. Remember those mozzarella sticks I said we ordered? Well don't worry because our waitress didn't remember either apparently, because she brought our meals out next. My wife's meal had no flavor to it at all. It legitimately tasted like they boiled the noodles and cooked the shrimp and just put that on a plate to serve. My "cajun" pasta was almost just as tasteless, as the only flavor it did have was that of black pepper, as someone who lived in cajun country, USA (aka Louisiana) I was very disappointed. On the plus side, the garlic cheese bread that came with our meals was not bad. We weren't able to finish our food, and our waitress apologized for the food and comped our entrées. As I said our server was very friendly, but as far as the food is concerned it was pretty bad. read more

This mom and pop restaurant right off the Mauston exit is Rediculously good. Everything is home made. Each person got a small loaf of warm bread. Chicken Noodle Soup was homemade worth real chicken. First of all, I really REALLY wanted to enjoy my experience here. There aren't a lot of dining options in Mauston itself, and I generally prefer to eat at local rather than chain restaurants. Unfortunately, I won't be going back to Roman Castle anytime soon. The service was great, up until our food arrived. I ordered the Gyro, which is supposed to come with the traditional Tzatziki sauce. So I start slathering it on the Gyro, which looked fantastic. I take one bite, and am surprised to discover that the Tzatziki sauce is actually Tartar sauce. I now know that Tartar sauce and Gyro meat tastes absolutely disgusting. Thanks, Roman Castle. The waitress does not check back with our table for another 20 minutes. During this time, my coffee gets cold (not once did she ask me if I wanted a warm up). I explain to her the tartar sauce situation. She gives me a weird look, but apparently goes back to the kitchen anyway. The waitress returns. With another tartar sauce. And wants me to taste it to see if it's what I wanted. I give up, tell her to forget about it, and leave without having a full meal. read more
