We recently visited Roman Wolves to celebrate our anniversary and unfortunately the overall experience left us underwhelmed. To begin with, our waiter didn't acknowledge the occasion at all even though we had mentioned it in our reservation which felt disappointing right from the start. Service felt rushed and the atmosphere wasn't what we expected. The music was loud and the space didn't feel intimate which made it hard to enjoy a relaxed dinner. On the positive side, the Fritto Misto was a great start. It was very good and we really enjoyed the spicy marinara dipping sauce. We also ordered the Burrata Carpaccio for a salad and it was light, fresh, and very good. Things went downhill with the Cheese Wheel Pasta Special. The menu says the pasta is prepared table side on a cheese wheel, but in reality they brought out a pan with the sauce already mixed in (and it honestly tasted more like heavy cream than cheese). It really feels like the cheese wheel is just for show. The pasta itself tasted fine, but it was no better than any other pasta on the menu. Definitely not worth the upcharge. My wife had the Pappardelle Ragu Di Roma and that was excellent with rich flavor, plenty of meat, and very well put together. Easily the best dish of the night. The cocktails were good, but they were honestly half the size of a normal drink and twice the price so they felt very overpriced. We ordered Tiramisu for dessert and it was good. Parking is also a nightmare. There is no valet and finding street parking nearby is extremely difficult. To be fair, Roman Wolves is not the only restaurant in the area with this issue but it definitely adds stress to the experience. Overall, we didn't have a horrible time but it just didn't meet our expectations, especially for an anniversary dinner. It felt rushed, overpriced, and somewhat gimmicky. Second time here but this time we came to try their happy hour - 5/5 We ordered basically everything on the happy hour menu (minus the calamari) and it was so filling and delicious! The Aperitivo Romano is a sampler of most of the happy hour menu bites so you could just get a few of those to share. The pinsa was also very good! Our server was Jorge and he was great! The only thing is parking is a PITA but it's Little Italy so that's to be expected I think we forgot our sunglasses here but I called the next day and they didn't have them. They only had reservations available for outside so I didn't get to see the interior, but the patio area was nice with lots of heat lamps. For an appetizer I had the Carciofini alla Giudea artichoke hearts which were incredible! Super crunchy and nicely breaded with marinara sauce on the side. For the entree I did the Salmone Frascati salmon risotto which was also excellent. The risotto was cooked just right and so yummy. It's been a LONG time since I've come across a restaurant that nailed it, and by it, I mean everything. For months, I have passed by this place during the day on my walks and something about its exterior and name appealed to me. Finally, one night I was in the area and my original dinner plans fell through and I remembered that I had wanted to check this place out. As a party of one, I agreed to sit bar side for immediate seating (a table was a 2 hour wait, so something to keep in mind for future planning). The restaurant has a very romantic cozy yet modern atmosphere -- definitely date worthy or a friends' night out. They had a prix fixe menu with a really generous selection of options per the three courses. I ordered the mozzarella in carrozza, the salmone al mango, and the tiramisu with a cappuccino. Let me reiterate my first point, they nailed it. Every course was divine -- from flavor to presentation to quality. And the thing is, these days it feels like every trip to a restaurant comes with a sacrifice: either decent food with bad service or good service with mediocre food or problematic ambiance. Roman Wolves was five stars across the board, because not only was the food perfect (I had no leftovers), the service was excellent. My server, Nastasha, was absolutely fantastic. Kind, attentive, and friendly. The other bartender nearby who was working the bar so well also checked in, as did another gentleman who I assumed was the manager. We had 8 people in our group, and originally, they had our reservation sitting up near the front. But because we knew we are slightly loud, we asked if they could accommodate us somewhere else. Right portion size and not too heavy on the sauces. The cioppino was a perfect blend of seafood stew paired with hot bread. I opted for spaghetti noodles on the side and it was good to dip the noodles in. The tiramisu was heavenly. Service was great. They were attentive to our group and always checked in with us. Prices are higher but thats to be expected for downtown san diego. Parking is either on the street or a paid lot. Not sure if they have high chairs or baby changing station since i didnt use the restroom and did not inquire about kid seating. At first we were seated towards the end and it felt a bit crowded as one of the servers were in our space to cater to the table next to us, but once we were seated the service was great here, the servers seem well knowledgeable in the culture and the food, they had great energy. Overall vibe is nice, elevated, intimate, great for date night or a night out. The pornstar martini was actually a great drink, a bit sweet, a bit sour, and not too strong. We split a steak and paired it with the tonnarelli gricia romana pasta that was buttery, peppery, and delicious. They offer a complimentary bowl of potato chips with Cacio e Pepe sauce drizzled on top. It was the perfect amount of rich and salty. For drinks, I ordered a Pompilio which had rum, pineapple, coconut, lemon, and ginger beer. It was refreshing and tasty. I was leaning towards the cheese wheel but the special of the day did not include any meat or seafood so I decided to revisit another time. For the main entree, I ordered a pappardelle ragu di Roma which is the wide pasta with ground beef and Italian sausage and ragu. The pappardelle pasta was cooked correctly and the ground beef Italian sausage ragu made the dish a star. I also tried the ravioli di granchio which is crab stuffed with cherry tomato pink vodka sauce. The crab ravioli was cooked perfectly and the pink vodka sauce was creamy and tasty. The atmosphere was lively and the servers were normal, nothing above the ordinary. They do charge a 3.9% hospitality fee. I'd come back to try other dishes including the cheese wheel pasta read more

Last visit sat outside along Kettner, definitely prefer inside seating if you can score it (best through a reservation). Drinks are solid, and the complimentary potato chips with their cacio e Pepe sauce which paired well with the wine was a nice surprise. Began with the carciofini alla giudia (Baby Artichokes / uncertain if canned), which fell a little flat for us. Our server? A total character--more Brooklyn than SoCal--but knew the menu inside out and delivered top-tier recs. They brought out these Italian chips (name escapes me), but wow. If Lay's dares you to eat just one, these dare you to stop at one bowl. Dangerous. Then came burrata with prosciutto. Imported from Italy, but flavor-wise... something was off. The olive oil and seasoning combo didn't quite land. As a self-proclaimed burrata connoisseur, this didn't crack my top three. Redemption was swift: Pappardelle Ragu di Roma. Pasta: silky and perfectly al dente. The ragu? A meaty symphony of sausage and beef--balanced, rich, and crucially not too acidic or too sweet. Pure pasta poetry. Would we go back? In a heartbeat. A well curated space smack dab in the middle of a very toursity area. Although, it looks like a lot of tourists get weeded out by other restaurants which is nice. The bar tenders were great, I sat at the bar but was not imbibing which they were very respectful of. Both bartenders were happy to chat it up and check in frequently. I had some calamari and carbonara. The calamari was great. Light, crispy, airy, and salty. Everything you could ever need in a nice spread of calamari. The carbonara was solid as well. A rich yellow sauce bastes the thin pasta that has chunks of guanicle littered throughout. A healthy distribution of cracked black pepper adds some solid texture and flavor. Super creamy, and not too heavy. A super solid carbonara at a solid price point. Overall, a really solid dining experience at a cool space. read more

Went to Roman Wolves for the first time and overall had a great experience. The food was excellent, and I would rate both the food and service a 4.5 out of 5. Unfortunately, the billing at the end left a bad impression. When we received our check, there was an "IFL" charge of 4.9%. I asked the waiter what it was, and he had to ask several other employees before a manager explained that it was an inflation charge. There was nothing on the menu or elsewhere that disclosed this fee. Adding a nearly 5% surcharge without clearly informing customers beforehand felt misleading. San Diego's inflation is no where near 5%, so not sure where they got that number. I also ordered a WhistlePig Old Fashioned. The menu indicated a $6 upcharge, but the drink ended up costing $36.50. While I understand premium liquor costs more, this isn't an upscale steakhouse, and a nearly $40 cocktail was surprising. The restaurant itself is beautiful, the food was excellent, and the staff was friendly. I would love to come back, but the unexpected fees and confusing billing practices rubbed me the wrong way. Transparency goes a long way, and I hope management considers being more upfront about these charges. read more
