There are two things that sets Rombauer Vineyards part from so many of their neighbors, one is that they have one of the nicest wine tasting rooms and patios in the entire region as they overlook their vast hillside property, and the second thing that sets them apart is that they honestly have one the finest tasting Chardonnays in all of Napa Valley. I was introduced to Rombauer wine through a work dinner after it was suggested by a colleague and I instantly fell in love with the combination of flavors. I made it my mission one day to visit the Rombauer Vineyards tasting room in the Napa Valley. Located along the Silverado Trail in St. Helena, California, Rombauer Vineyards was founded by husband and wife Koerner and Joan Rombauer in 1980 and two years later the became a bonded winery where they crush their grapes, store, bottle and serve their wines all in one place. Making reservations for a recent weekday tasting for two was very easy on the Tock website, and they do not require a credit card which is a nice aspect, and parking although small was easy to access, once we found their tasting room as we wound our way up their hillside drive up to their tasting room. There you will find a tasting room complete with deck overlooking their property, which also includes a counter area where visitors can order wines by the glass. We reserved Rombauer's Classic Tasting which gave us the opportunity to try five pours of their current reserve of wines. Phillip our tasting room associate treated us to not only a great catalog of wines, but relayed to us the history of the winery and vineyards, and most special of all gave a tour of their underground naturally climate-controlled half-miles of caves, where they store all of their barrels which are all cured before the wine is placed inside. Our first pour was one of their vintage wines that helped but Rombauer on the winemaking map, their 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, which was sourced in both the Sonoma and Napa regions, and had a rather vibrant bouquet thanks to notes of peaches and grapefruits. My friend wasn't a huge Sauvignon Blanc fan and so Phillip opted to bring out their Joy Late Harvest Chardonnay, which is more of an after-dinner wine, and contained a beautiful hue and intense honey sweetness thanks to water evaporating out of the grapes, unlike their signature Chardonnay. Speaking of which, then came time for their signature 2021 Carneros Chardonnay, which was sourced from that region in southern Napa, and was as good as I remembered tasting in a restaurant those many years ago, as it was pure gold thanks to notes of mango and citrus. We actually had four more wine tastings to go and they were all red and more complex than they next. First up was their wine that Phillip recommended pairing with a bright acidic pasta, as their 2019 Napa Valley Merlot had a nice full-bodied taste to it thanks to a palate filled with cherries and plums. We were then poured one of their smoother wines, which was their 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which had notes of chocolate and vanilla and would have paired wonderfully with any protein-filled meal. finally came an unexpected double pour of their 2020 Rombauer Zinfandel and their 2019 Fiddletown Zinfandel, the former is what Phillip called their everyday wine, which is rather unusual for a Zinfandel, but I could only agree since the taste was light and jammy and super easy to drink, while the latter was sourced from the Sierra foothills, hence the name, and was more medium in body and was limited in release, so this was a real bonus that we were able to enjoy on their wine tasting deck. We loved the Zinfandels so much that my friend and I each purchased a bottle of their 2020 Zinfandel and my friend also purchased their 2021 Carneros Chardonnay. Our total bill was a little under 125 dollars, with a waived tasting fee and complimentary personal tour of their wine cave, it was an experience to remember at Rombauer. Their motto is "The Joy of Wine" which goes hand in hand family member Irma Rombauer's legendary cookbook "The Joy of Cooking" and perfectly sums up the journey the Rombauer family began from making wine in their garage to miles of underground cave activity, just shows how far they have truly come at Rombauer Vineyards, a true Napa Valley gem that is worth multiple visits. read more

What can I say but ahhhh Rombauer one of my favorites! The first time we had it was at the Axels in CHANHASSEN. That was 13 year's ago. WOW then and still. The winery got close to burning bad , if i can I'll show you pics of the scene. It came all the way up to the first ledge. Beautiful scenery nevertheless, hospitality PLUS PLUS PLUS! All the way around. You drive up, a valet comes and with a great smile your car is whisked away carefully. Fabulous young kids! Tip them well. We bought bottles which in turn you get to keep the glasses. And its reasonable, I mean COME ON you think you'll just sit and stay for ONE glass! One needs to reserve a day and time WHICH I like better, you are given a reasonable time to sit , relax and enjoy your wine .BTW great service when you go to purchase your wine! The last time the family and I visited Napa was probably 2018. At that time, we were shocked at how much the tasting fees had increased and how stuffy Napa had become. On Wednesday we decided to give Napa another chance being that COVID changed how wineries conduct tastings. The Mrs. found Rombauer on Yelp so we decided to book a tasting. Rombauer is located off of the Silverado trail near St. Helena. It sits on top of a hill with beautiful views of the valley below. Our tasting was scheduled for 10 a.m. which was perfect because the heat was coming in fast. Once we checked in at the tasting room, the hostess took us to a beautifully shaded area on the side of a small hill next to the tasting room. It was just my family and two other couples so very intimate. Truthfully, I didn't have high expectations. I was expecting that someone would come along, pour for us and walk away. Philip poured for us and it was one of the best wine tasting experiences the Mrs. and I have had. Philip walked us through each wine. beginning with a rather new varietal to Rombauer, Sauvignon Blanc, which is the only white wine I'll drink. He then poured us the Rombauer Chardonnay which is what the winery is known for. In between pours, Philip shared tales of his life in Florida. Yes, he made fun of Florida because all the weird stuff happens in Florida. He told us about his career at Disney and how he started down the path to where is is today, a Sommelier. Philip was also a Manga fan which my daughter loved. He also mentioned anecdotes from the TV show, How I Met Your Mother, which my daughter related to as well. It was nice that kiddo got something out of the experience as well. Our tasting experience lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes. Philip poured us a glass to walk around with while we admired the grounds which are beautiful. Since we had some time to kill before heading to Mustard's Grill for lunch, we stopped by the tasting room for another glass. I was wine hopping through Napa with a friend and her family. This place is located on top of a beautiful mountain with the most spectacular views of the vineyards and the surrounding area below. It was a beautiful Spring day so we sat outside under some lovely trees in the garden area. I came for their wine tasting, and went inside to purchase a few of their wines. I started with 2021 ROMBAUER SAUVIGNON BLANC- it had punchy and vibrant aromas of passionfruit, white and nectarine with hints of fresh cut grass and kaffir lime. It was light crisp and I throughly it enjoyed it. The next wine I tried was 2019 ROMBAUER ZINFANDEL- This Zinfandel is intensely aromatic with scents of red cherries, plums, ripe boysenberry, vanilla and violets. It too was good. Next I tried their 2019 NAPA VALLEY MERLOT-My palate exhibited flavors of red cherries, blueberries, and blackberries, along with bramble bush and dried violets. It was interesting and I loved the berry flavor. Last but not least the final wine I tried was 2019 NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON- it had aromas of blackberry, cassis and black cherry which combined seamlessly with notes of milk chocolate, vanilla and tobacco. It too was good and had interesting flavors. This place definitely has the best views and it's a wonderful place to come with a group or family, relax and enjoy some wines and snacks. This was my first Napa experience, and it was a truly memorable one, thanks to my best friend who took me here for my birthday. I loved everything about our visit--the beautiful grounds, the wine tasting itself, our fun and informative host, Kaden, and the wines we purchased of course. I'm not a wine drinker myself (the company I keep are) so I did ask dumb questions, but our host was not at all condescending and answered all of those questions with grace. Rombauer Vineyard never cease to amaze us. Each and every visit we had has been spectacular and the services that we receive is exceptional. The whimsical garden overlook the beautiful Napa valley. It's always a pleasure visiting the vineyard located in Napa and feeling welcome by their friendly staff. Javier, Karl, and Jesus show a true dedication to Rombauer Vineyard. They are super brilliant and intelligent. All three of these tasting room staff goes over and beyond with their hospitality and charisma. As you enter the tasting room parking, the front reception staff is also extremely pleasant and inviting. The best part, you feel like family because most of the staff remembers you by first name, which is very rare these days. I can't choose a one favorite at Rombauer because I love it all including its uniqueness depending on how you pair it. While my husband's favorite is the extreme popular Carneros Chardonnay, I love the fuller bodied proprietor selection Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. The buttery flavors of the Chardonnay is smooth and a party to the palate; it's a great compliment to Thai food and seafood. The cab is savory/spicy and pairs well with lamb. My first time at Rombauer was absolutely amazing. Really pretty views of the vineyards and surrounding mountains with intimate spots to enjoy a tasting or just wines by the glass. Our party of 7 was a bit late to our 2:30pm reservation, but the group before us was also running late so it worked out for us. We got a table with a beautiful view and our host was awesome, telling stories and jokes the entire time. This was the most affordable tasting we did in Napa over the weekend and we also got to try the most wines. The tasting was for 6 wines and we got 2 extra off-menu tastes as well. I really enjoyed their Zinfandel with the jammy berry-forward flavor, and our table ended up purchasing 3 bottles at the end. I loved that we were able to walk around to enjoy their grounds, we also got to see the caves with their barrels. I love Rombauer because of the beautiful wines and the awesome people. In full disclosure, we are wine club members here and visit both here and in the sierra foothills. The Wines are all world class with fantastic Chardonnay and Zinfandel as their best sellers. I love their Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well. The classic Rombauer Chardonnay is one of the best California Chardonnays with a very fruit-forward taste. The Sauvignon Blanc is light and crisp and is a great starter for the afternoon or evening. I love Zinfandels and their Zins are all super delicious. The El Dorado Zin is very complex and has the right balance of fruit and spice. Their classic Zin is a must-have for everyday drinking, done right with nice fruit, and great balance. The Family Run Winery has all the right components to make this place a must-see (and drink) in the Napa Valley. Kerrie is very knowledgeable about her wines, did a great job of developing a rapport with us, and quickly figured out where to take us on our wine tasting journey on our most recent visit. Please make an appointment for a full tasting, as they will more than likely accommodate you to have a glass on the patio if you just show up. If you don't have an appointment you will miss out on the full wine tasting experience and the wonderful history of the family winery presented by their great staff. Wines and food are meant to be paired together, as you visit the winery you will see the family has talents in both arenas with the "Joy of Cooking" author being Irma Rombauer. We have been to Rombauer a few times with friends and have always enjoyed the experience; until yesterday, 10/25. We were raving about this place to our kids and so decided to bring them along with our dog. We were so disappointed! We had specifically reserved a picnic table like we always have in the past because we love the view. And also wanted to have a picnic with the family. We knew it was going to rain but decided to keep the reservation anyway since we weren't going to arrive until 1pm. By the time we got there, the weather was clear. We were greeted by 3 women out front, we checked in and right away one girl walked us over to a table on the patio. We told her we booked a picnic table, since one, we brought a lot of food and two, we have a dog. She went back to the other girls and tried to confirm this, as if we were lying. The other girls then said, "Well, we won't be able to give you the picnic table because they are all SOAKED! So everyone got moved to the patio". I was thinking..shouldn't I have been notified then prior to the visit? Then we asked if we could just use towels to cover the bench and still the women insisted that even if we did that, we would still be sitting on SOAKED wood. We then walked over to the patio and saw that they were giving us a small round table which was very inconvenient since we had already decided to bring a lot of food for the picnic. There was simply not enough space for the food. And then the girl continues to tell us that the reservation completely changed and that we now have to do the hosted tasting or order wine by the glass, etc! And we said we preferred to buy a bottle instead like we had planned to do. By this time, everyone in our party was already annoyed so my husband decided to check out the picnic area. Well, guess what?! The table and benches were completely dry! Plus, there was already another family sitting at another table enjoying their picnic! Why would you lie and say everyone got moved? So then we decided to tell these women that we were moving to the picnic area! Totally unacceptable! What is the purpose of making a reservation and putting in a specific request if you would decide for the customer anyway and think that you could just dump them wherever and do whatever you think would be more beneficial for your winery instead? That's just poor customer service! At this point, we probably won't be back at this property for a very long time! I do hope that your staff will do better and be more respectful to guests. read more

This is my 2nd time here in less than a year. Everyone is SO knowledgeable and friendly. We were fortunate to have an extremely well educated and well mannered Javier Valenzuela. Since we are teachers, he immediately waved our tasting fees and thanked us for our service! How can you NOT want to purchase EVERYTHING from him. He broke out some reserves that I like to call my "MOM, we're pregnant" wine! I didn't want to continue with the other tasting because I wanted to savor every drop. He told us some interesting stories about Koerner Rombauer and Robert Mondavi. Check out the jacket Mr. Rombauer purchased at a wine auction from Mr. Mondavi. My sister asked why there are a lot of "Joy of Cooking " books. Javier told us Koerner Rombauer's great aunt is the coauthor! It was such an enjoyable experience. The winery offers, tastings, tours and a picnic area with wine by the glass or bottle. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and were seated in a wonderful table overlooking the Napa Valley. It was a perfect setting. We ordered a bottle of their Chardonnay to accompany our picnic lunch. It was perfect. Rombauer makes very good wines. The staff is excellent, super friendly and helpful. We have not gone out much since covid; because we are older we felt it was not worth the risk. But we were camped at Bothe-Napa State Park, and we really had the urge to do some wine tasting. After researching a bit, we decided that Rombauer seemed to be a safe bet--appointments only, outdoor seating, and so on. We enjoyed our visit immensely. The grounds and garden are beautiful, with great views. Our host (Keri) was friendly, knowledgeable and personable. We enjoyed each of the wines, choosing to purchase a few bottles of the chardonnay and the 2018 cabernet sauvignon. And since we knew that Rombauer had purchased a winery in Amador, very close to where we live, we decided to join the wine club. read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I definitely would! My husband and I usually go to V Sattui winery when we are in the area, but we decided to spend our anniversary at a different place so we picked Rombauer. The views were amazing, despite the hot weather in mid June, there were tons of shade around the seating area. We were seated at the bottom of the garden area at a little corner. It was really quiet and had a lot of privacy, which we really liked since we also have our pup with us. The wines were great too. Our favorite was the Chardonnay and Zinfandel. If it's available, you should definitely ask if you could try their fiddletown zinfandel, it was SO amazing! I'm not a huge fan of Zinfandels, but we enjoyed it so much we ended up buying a bottle to take home. Their Chardonnay is also very unique, unlike any other Chardonnays. What made our visit the best was truly the service. We were super late into our appointment no thanks to traffic, and yet they still accommodated us. Our hostess/server Carrie (?) was just sooo wonderful and great. Took the time to explain to us the process and history of the wines, which we enjoyed. We've been lucky to be able to come here a few times with our friends that are members. This time we went alone as my husband is a veteran and they do free tastings for veterans. We've always enjoyed their wines, but yesterday they seemed exceptionally good. Currently with covid you can do by the glass, bottle, or a tasting flight, and for each wine you have to go to the window. The 2019 Chardonnay is so delicious! Warm flavors of caramel, butter with some fruit like apple. My other favorites were the two Zins, they were really fruit forward, yet balanced! First time here with my girls. My friend made a reservation for six people and I didn't know that they planned this for me as my pre-birthday celebration. That's so sweet of them. The place and area was reasonably nice. Clean. Staff are pleasant and nice! They are not that huge but really have nice views. They only have it outdoor since they are still observing strict protocols in regards to the pandemic. It was gloomy and raining for a little bit on our way there and until midway when we're doing our wine-tasting. So Thankful that it stopped and weather turned really nice and amazing! Sun came out so we stayed a little longer. Since they don't serve any food at all, everyone is allowed to bring food from outside. I made and brought a small tray of charcuterie with us and everybody enjoyed it. It matched with our wine tasting and finished up another 3 bottles of wine lol.
