I hadn't been here in years! We had a nice dinner here starting with some nice warn bread. We had the fried short rib ravioli app which was okay, not much flavor to the meat but the sauce was delicious. He had the seafood Alfredo and loved it, it has a lot of seafood in it! I had the gnocchi in a thick nutty pesto that was surprisingly yummy. Coke products! Service was good. Drinks prices are beyond ridiculous, just unacceptable really. I don't know how the rest of the food is, but the spaghetti bolognese is a crime. Italian cooking is not about bland food masked with an overpowering amount of garlic, it's about balance and flavors. Secondly, a real Italian restaurant would use a pappardelle instead of spaghetti. My third point would be that this food is overpriced. Pasta has very high profit margin and cheap pasta piled with tomato sauce, garlic flavored hamburger meat at their prices is a scam. For a passable Bolognese, try Whym Brewery, it's not exceptional but it's certainly light years better than Ronaldo's lackluster effort. read more

Dined here on a Sat Night. Busy but not full. Service was slow but tolerable. The food was terrible. Very tough to mess up Italian, but somehow they did. I had Vongole, which came with almost no sauce, rather a ladle of clam broth with no flavor to it. My Wife had a chicken and pasta dish that seemed to have a few cups of capers covering it. We were hoping for so much more. Ronaldo's was one of he hottest restaurants in the area some 20 years ago, but things declined and we stopped going. We heard about the new ownership and wanted to give it a try. Sadly, it wasn't all that good, and I don't see us returning. Many reviews complain about prices and they are high for Hampton, but on par for Portsmouth. That said, the atmosphere, service and food do not warrant the price. Yes, the portions are big, too big, ridiculously big, pasta entrees serve 4. Who wants that? I don't want leftovers and usually not everybody wants the same dish. Thing Maggianos where they put a platter down for a party of 4. That is what you get here. The fried ravioli starter was not as good as I recall from years back, but was tasty nonetheless. They do provide bread service at no charge, kudos, but the bread itself was nothing special. They do bring a few pieces of delicious cheese to accompany the bread which was a nice touch. We had a Caesar salad, which was also big enough for 3-4 people. It was just OK. Hard to say if the dressing was fresh or a doctored up bottle dressing. The spaghetti bolognese entree was ridiculously large, but the sauce had no depth. It was not a true bolognese. The other entree we tried was Eggplant parm, also too large and just OK. It was overwhelmed with perhaps a pound of pasta. We passed on desserts. If you have a very big appetite and like large portions and takeout for another 2-3 meals then this is your place. I had never been to Ronaldo's and my boyfriend hadn't been since the new ownership. We didn't have a reservation but they had space for us, it was early, 5:30pm. We were jammed into a booth (we are not overweight) and had cold air blowing on us. The glass of wine that I got was $14 and not a generous pour. I highly doubt an enter bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc cost $14. I had the chicken piccata. Small pounded chicken breast with a handful of cooked pasta. It was decent but grossly overpriced. $31.99. This dish might cost $2.00 to make. My boyfriend got the seafood Alfredo for $39.99 and it had a lot of seafood. Expensive but a generous portion and he did like it. They are charging Portsmouth waterfront prices and it's a small place in a strip mall. There are far better places for less money. I can't recommend this establishment. read more

I first dined at Ronaldo's when it was originally located adjacent to the northbound side of the bridge on RT1A at Hampton Beach in the early 1990's. It was easily the most incredible dining experience of my life. The quality (and of course the quantity) was far better than anything I'd experienced in the North End of Boston. The seating capacity at the first location was limited. So patrons would sit in their cars during the middle of winter to wait for the hostess to emerge to knock on their window to let them know their table was ready. It was that good and that worth it. However, the current edition of "Ronaldo's" as practiced by the establishment my family and I patronized last evening for my wife's birthday, is an abomination and an insult to Ronaldo's legacy. If you want to pay astronomical prices for substandard food, doled out in minuscule portions, then this place is for you. I should have known something was different when we arrived at 5:00, and the place was virtually empty. In prior iterations of Ronaldo's, there was typically a waiting line of over an hour by then, and we were happy to wait, knowing that something amazing awaited us. What ever happened to Ronaldo's of the late 90's. a long line to get in. they had the prefect tomato sauce. and that little bowl of soup. only in my dreams now. but to there credit, the service was very good, the veal and chicken very good. we ordered a cosmo, but couldn't drink it, the bread was like white bread. this is an italian restoreante, you need Italian bread, and get the recipe for the sauce you once had. read more

The last time I went to Ronaldo's was when it was on the Hampton strip and it was amazing. That said, I read the reviews and based on mostly positive recent feedback as of 9/6/24, decided we'd give it a try. Ambiance is dark and dated. The table was sticky and the music could only be described as Italian ABBA. We ordered two glasses of white wine and the braised beef short-rib ravioli app ($16). We instead got two glasses of red wine ($13 ea) but the server was nice and we were glad to be out so we just rolled with it. The table bread was generic / not in-house made but it wasn't stale. The 2 large ravioli weren't bad but they were breaded and deep fried and we didn't recall that detail in the menu but maybe it was? The filling was decent but it was pureed like baby food. Kind of sacrilege way to tread braised short rib. The marinara sauce it came with was good. For entrees, she got the chicken parm ($28) and I got the shrimp puttanesca ($32). Neither came with any side or salad. The pasta was generic store bought dried in both meals and cooked to slight al dente. The chicken parmesan was very basic, nothing special, not even a fresh basil leaf garnish. It tasted fine but wasn't a $28 plate by any stretch. The shrimp puttanesca had 5 shrimp and about as many pieces of jarred / marinated artichoke hearts, some olives, capers and no fresh basil was noted. The artichoke hearts' vinegar threw the dish way off and the spice was off the chart. I have no issue with spicy food but this was like Thai-hot spicy level. It was unappetizing for an Italian dish. I was hungry but could only eat about half before I decided I didn't deserve this. Threw the napkin on the table to 'wave the flag of surrender'. No box, no desert, and no returning. Besides the overspice on the shrimp dish and the mix up with the wine, the food wasn't bad - it was just OK. In my opinion $10 less per plate would have been appropriate for the quality. Service was good and friendly. We're both sad our date night dinner didn't work out. And at $130 with tip, I can't recommend Ronaldo's Ristorante. read more

Have noticed some really bad reviews recently. I think it may be hit or miss. Went a couple of times most recently and the service was great on one and meh on the other. The food was fantastic both times though. I agree - they should think about hiring a baker or at least getting the bread from somewhere local besides the same truck that delivers to Hannaford. Depending on your waitress, you can get super friendly or snooty, but I'm fine with either as long as my food is good and the service isn't horrible. I've not had a bad meal here. read more

We stopped for dinner prior to catching a show at the casino. I had the seafood Macaroni & Cheese. My friend had the frutti di mare. The serving size is huge. 2 to 4 meals even for big eaters. The food is very good. Party of 4, all were very happy with their selections. I have been to tons of restaurants around N. America, S. America and Europe. This Mac and cheese is the best thing I have ever tasted. I ate all I could, and finished about 1/3rd. There is so much shrimp and lobster. And the complex flavors are so delicious together. We had a quiet late afternoon dinner of veal saltimboca for myself and eggplant parmesan for my wife. The veal was prepared well with very little gristle and pounded into a fine cutlet. The sauce for the saltimboca was too watery with a vinegary taste. The eggplant parm was sliced to nice thin pieces with generous portions. The gravy for the eggplant parm was bland and the cheese topping a low quality Wisconsin-like generic mozzarella. Both servings of pasta were not al dente and too soft. Dessert was average with too much Hershey syrup on the cannoli and the cappuccino tasted strange. The cannoli shells were crispy with a nice ricotta filling. The service was adequate and polite. One major negative point was the proprietor's refusal to honor a gift card. According to the waitress the restaurant changed ownership two years ago and therefore the old Ronaldo's gift cards were not being honored by the new Ronaldo's ownership. read more

Had a nice Saturday "date night" dinner with my sweetie. Heard portions were huge so we agreed in advance to share. Italian Wine was perfect. He liked his Peroni. It was hard to choose but we ended up with Shared caprese and gnocchi in creamy pesto. Will never worry again about having to go to Notth End to get good Italian. Really nice outing! We went on a Saturday at 2 PM when they opened. Since most people don't eat at that time of day we didn't see anyone then but i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have anyone in there all day. They are about as classy as the strip mall that they are in and although the staff goes out of their way to be nice to you they really can't make up for how poor this overall experience is. Their is a dank smell as you come in, place needs to be cleaned, rugs probably need to be replaced, bathrooms definitely need to be cleaned and probably updated.. There were four of us, including my 4-year old. Tip#1 make some updates, walking in i feel like i am taking a time machine back to the early 90s... i should have got the hint that this place wasn't great when my usually starving child barely touched her spaghetti and meatballs. Personally, i don't really understand the concept of handing out the pan that you cooked the food in. I don't necessarily want a meal with all the oil you used to cook the food. My daughter probably shouldn't be handling a hot pan that just came from the oven... Tip#2, invest in some plates... My calamari fra diavlo had enough crap on it to make separate tapas dishes but really no calamari, like wise my mother got shrimp fra diavlo but there was only two shrimp. Tip#3 if you are going to skimp on the seafood don't charge $30 a plate... Even the random $6.99 "bar opening" fee for a couple of soda's really just put me off... Tip#4 don't charge people for things not on the menu, incorporate those costs into your prices.... All in all at $160 plus tip for lunch at mall/strip mall quality food i can't imagine i would ever go back even if everything within 100 miles closed. If you went here expecting good Italian food or a nice date you will be sorely disappointed. read more

Under new ownership since last April, Ronaldo's has regained and excels of its previous incarnations as one of best of the Italian restaurants north of Boston. On two occasions I was very impressed with the professional waitstaff, wonderfully flavorful traditional dishes and fine wine selections. Their Bolognese is so beautifully prepared! I returned to Ronaldo's after the new owner took over, hoping for improvement after seeing some nice FB posts. The place is much cleaner, I'll give them that. The server was not very welcoming and when she took our order, she was borderline rude - I had asked the restaurant in advance if I could order one of the menu items with an alternate sauce and they said (on FB), "Of course!" When I placed my order, I was given some pushback, lots of rude looks but she took the order. I ordered a glass of ($13) red wine, which clearly had been open for days and was stale and had a bad aftertaste. Our salads/soups were delicious and the bread with the balsamic glazed parmigiano on the side was a nice touch. However, our main courses, the lobster ravioli and the gnocchi pesto, looked like a stew. you couldn't even see the gnocchi (see pic) and my lobster ravioli was also swimming in so much sauce I had to pour it into a small bowl so that I could eat the pasta. The server came by to ask how our food was and we pointed out that it was very heavy on sauce (over the top) and she shook her head and walked away. She clearly did not want to hear a truthful reply despite it being delivered graciously. A few minutes later, the owner came out, walked right by us and spoke to some folks at another table. We would love for this to be our local favorite Italian but, unfortunately, the food is just not prepared appropriately. Italians do not pour sauce over their pasta like a soup! read more

We've all struggled with the reality of inflation and higher prices but....my goodness there is a limit in regards to prices vs quality. This place has higher prices than many home made Italian restaurants in Boston's north end. Their drinks prices are simply laughable. That being said I will pay more for good quality but for the most part that isn't what you get here. I will say the Alfredo sauce is delicious and the Ravioli in Alfredo sauce is definitely the best thing on the menu but C'mon...these prices are so off-putting and pretentious it ruins even the good parts of this restaurant. If I'm paying these kinds of prices I want a nice atmosphere...not an Italian restaurant in a strip mall with very little ambiance. Perhaps turn the heat on too. Pretty sure my wife got frost bite from just being here for 60 minutes ;). This place isn't terrible - it's decent food but it's the kind of place you go to once, and you say "that was OK" but then after you think about the price vs quality, Lack of ambiance, lack of quality service, and insane pricing you simply never go to again. Ronaldos has new ownership since April 2023. If you are looking for the absolute best Italian food you will not find any Italian better within 25 miles. The Lasagna Bolognese is as good as I had in Italy! Their seafood dishes are so fresh and portions are huge!!! But here is the best kept secret... their wine list is better than any Restaurant in Portsmouth. Not your old Ronaldo's! New ownership, new menu and a truly pleasant surprise after unfortunately dismissing Ronaldo's over the past few years and then some. They fit us in with a reservation last minute on Mothers Day and we had a really good experience. Same decor for the most part but with updates, better seating ,etc. Food was amazing, started with the eggplant rollatini, an order of the seafood risotto and beef stroganoff special. The menu has been pared down quite a bit, but for the better, there's only so much you can pump out of a kitchen their size. Some of the drinks were a bit pricey, but that seems to be the norm these days. Wait, staff was excellent and highly attentive. We will surely return. Left with a complimentary desert sampler It was obvious there were patrons they're looking for the same old, but hopefully they'll be as happy as we were with the new Ronaldo's ! read more

Long time Ronaldo's fan. I had to try it with the new owners. Three of us sat at the bar. The place is much the same, but cleaner with improved help. The food was very good, but prices have gone way up. They also no longer include a salad with your meal. The bartender was somewhat inattentive and cold, but not rude. The place is now way overpriced for a strip mall space with no atmosphere. Sorry, my days of being a regular are gone at this stage. read more

We are so happy the Ronaldo's is under new ownership! In the past, this place was dirty, poor service and the Italian food was in par with chain restaurants. Now however, the restaurant is clean, updated and has a staff that is knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. The menu offers an exciting selection of authentic Italian food all made with fresh ingredients. The prices might seem high if compared to the 99. There is no comparison, however, to the quality of food you will enjoy at this fine restaurant. If you want an added treat, check out their monthly wine tasting events. Waitress finally brought our entries but never returned to check on us. (They brought my son the wrong dish.). I noticed our waitress taking cell phone calls in the back of the restaurant. After 20 minutes of being ignored we just walked out. I left $6 on the table because that's all the cash that I had on me. I've never done this before but I have no regrets. read more

The waitress was very friendly and was quick to inform us that they were down a chef and a waitress. We were a party of 4, two kids & two adults. Drinks were fine. Salad was basic iceberg lettuce, 2 slices of cucumbers, a couple random onions and maybe 2 cherry tomatoes. Nothing spectacular. Next I ordered my daughter the French bread pizza - disgusting. Told the waitress very light sauce. It came out with meat sauce. She's vegetarian so that went back. Re informed them to put barely any sauce on it...again it was smothered. She had two bites & was done. My eggplant parm was also smothered in meat sauce & I'm also vegetarian. I informed the waitress & waited for the replacement. I've ordered both these dishes before - no meat ever was in the sauce. The dish was edible but nothing about it was incredible by any means. I ate a few bites or the eggplant which was quite over fried. The pasta was done well but the sauce - nasty!! By now we both felt uneasy about our food. Our stomachs were so upset we stopped for Tums on the ride home. My son ordered chicken fingers and fries - chicken was over cooked, they had no fries but gave him pasta with sauce. My boyfriend got the most expensive seafood dish. I believe it was some dish with Fruit in the name. He said he thoroughly enjoyed it aside from the issues with everyone else's dish. It had lobster, shrimp and clams. When we got the bill the waitress informed us that it changed hands in the last three years.
