Rondo's is one of my favorite joints in South Boston. It doesn't mess around: no frills, no chic interior, no fancy dishes. This is an old school sub shop. Rondo's management and staff know exactly what their customers want and they hit that mark. They have a large selection of subs, all of which are generously filled (they don't skimp on the meat). The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Everything is fairly priced and the portions are generous. This South Boston staple is a bit of a hidden gem, but a gem nonetheless. Got a large hot steak combo and it was huge! Fresh and pipping hot. Also got a medium cold cut Turkey which was also big and could've easily gotten away with a small. They had all the classic toppings for sandwiches: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, oil n vinegar, hots, Mayo, mustard. Fresh bread, good quality meat and great staff. After years of working a 10 minute walk away from Rondo's I finally decided to try their sub. I regret not trying it earlier. There were dozens of people waiting and the people making the sandwiches were rushing as much as they could. It's cash only and I didn't have the chance to pull out another dollar to pay the total amount but the cashier was very friendly and okay about it. The sandwich took a while to make because there were so many people. It was worth every minute of wait. I had a steak and pepperoni sub with mayo and provolone cheese and it was so delicious. Arrived in the miserable cold from Florida this afternoon. The snow is already dirty. It wasn't the best start to the trip. And then I found rondos. I actually remember trying to find this place when I was visiting a few years ago. They were closed inexplicably. I was livid because the reviews were so great and I traveled at least three or 4 miles to get there. If you live in Boston you know that you have to convert it like dog years. A three or 4 mile trek in Boston is a major effort. That said. I get it. Wow. That is definitely one of my top five all-time favorite cheesesteaks. I went with onions and hot peppers. The place was busy as hell as they were about to close I see why. I visited Rondo's a few weeks back with my daughter. I was doing an Anthony Bourdain (Rest in Peace) and Southie pilgrimage and I put Rondo's on the list. Anthony had visited Rondo's in one of his shows. They are currently sporting a 4 and 1/2 star rating on Yelp. Far be it for me to drag down the rating... I will go with a 5. For sure, Rondo's is a definite 4+ or 4 and 1/2. The food at Rondo's is classic Southern New England grinder shop fare. I grew up eating in these types of places ... and I will never tire of this food. Rondo's did not disappoint. I went with the sausage, onions, and peppers in red sauce grinder. My daughter had a chicken cutlet grinder. We were both happy. We visited right at the lunch hour rush and it was pretty busy. Our food came out relatively quickly. Order taking was a little unorganized and this is my only real negative. The service was efficient and friendly enough. I would be happy to go back anytime. This place is part of the Southie experience. Rondo's has this old school Southie charm despite being surrounded by luxury condos and new age American restaurants. There isn't much to the inside as many people just order takeout subs but they do have tables if you want to sit and eat. I've had their chicken parm and steak and cheese subs a few times now and they're always consistently good at decent prices. They're a cash only, no frills establishment but they have great value (the large subs are huge and all under $10).
