I'm surprised at how good the food and service is! I came on a Sunday afternoon with reservations expecting for this establishment to be packed like all the other brunch places in the DC area. Surprisingly, there were a few diners but not busy and very spacious inside! My friend and I ordered the Hot Mess (sauteed peppers, sausage gravy, fried chicken and fried egg on top) and it was amazing! The chicken was perfectly moist on the inside and crispy on the outside with just the perfect amt of seasoning! I had them put the sausage gravy on the side since I saw they tend to smother the entire plate with gravy. We also had the bottomless mimosas for $15 and they were more champagne to juice ratio which i preferred. Our glasses were never empty and we never had to flag down our waitress for more mimosas, she kept them flowing the entire time we were there! We stopped in last night for drinks and ended up staying for dinner. Great beer list with lots of unusual beers I haven't seen anywhere else in D.C. Awesome food! We had a chicken liver skewer and the chicken sausage on a pretzel roll with wild mushrooms. Both were outstanding and well-priced. There are lots of really interesting things on the menu (crispy pig ear salad and short breads) and I thought there were also some good options for vegetarians. The atmosphere was really chill with great views out to the busy street. Service was also very good. This ended up being a great date night. I only wish they had some happy hour specials. read more

4.5 stars, I really loved this place! I wanted to take my friends who are visiting DC from ATL for the summer to a good spot in Adams Morgan and Roofers Union turned out to be a great choice. We needed a place where we could eat dinner pretty late (10pm) and I was particularly looking for a rooftop. I called RU at 9:30pm and made a reservation- they were quick to say of course, we can dine at that time (kitchen closes at 11). When we got there, they seated us a comfortable table, there were still some guests dining but there was also a band setting up. We ordered charred cauliflowers for appetizer (it was yummy) and good ole American favs for entrées. My friends got burger and chicken hotdog (seems like big hotdogs are a specialty on the menu). I got the quinoa burger- I wasn't expecting it to also come with buns - so I just didn't eat the buns but it was good! I tried the hotdog and that was also tasty. The fries that came with the meal were superb. We could smell those when we walked in to the dining area so we had already made up our minds before we even sat down. Our server was very sweet and accommodating. The dining area overlooks 18th street with a ceiling to floor glass window that stretched the length of the restaurant and it is beautiful. We knew we wanted to go up to the roof as well but the downside was that you had to get your name on a list and wait for your turn because they, I assume, did not want to overcrowd the roof. We checked back for our spot on the list and we were up next within 20 minutes. I was surprised about this wait time especially after we got on the rooftop because it was not that crowded up there. It was, in fact, more low key than the dining/bar area. I can appreciate the precaution though. There is a small bar up there and high chair tables as well as stools overlooking the street. Very nice view- I think it's one of the taller building on 18th St so it is nice to be able to see everything else going on down below. The band that they had played an interesting mix of genres so I cant really put my finger on what type of band they were but they were fun and got people to dance. Overall, this was a great first experience and a fun summer rooftop in DC. I'll come back! read more

Brussels sprouts are amazing! Someone who works at the restaurant came around to us after and asked how everything was and asked how they could improve. Very nice service even though it was a busy night at the rooftop bar and restaurant. The views/rooftop are great too - we had a lot of fun. I only gave 4 stars just bc some of our food didn't come with exactly what was advertised and the bartender was a little rude but I think that's just bc it was a busy night. Go for the drinks and view but skip the food. We went since it was on a top 10 list of places to eat in DC - it's around the corner, the weather was beautiful and the rooftop patio was calling. Service was fine, setting was fine but the music was awful, ill-chosen and too loud. Drinks were good - punch looked intriguing but bowls seemed a little big for the small tables. Food - much ado about nothing. The burger was fine but not spectacular, heirloom tomato salad was basically a small handful of halved cherry tomatoes with balsamic.... But the skewered chicken livers were the real shame...barely a mouthful this should have been in the appetizer category and even then was too small and overpriced. In general, the menu and prices should be rethought. In sum - as stated above - go for the drinks and view but curb expectations... read more

This place is OK, but you could probably find a a better brunch spot nearby. I thought my food was pretty good; my friends were less than impressed. I ordered the fried chicken thigh sandwich ($12), which was solid. My friends' eggs benedict were somewhat less than ($14-$16). The main issue, however, was the service. The waitresses were quite nice, but some members of our group waited over an hour and a half for food. That was excessive. The indoor space is rustic and charming. The rooftop is heated, although it is less effective on windy days. If you plan on bringing a group, definitely make a reservation. read more

I'm really looking forward to what this place has to offer. Their revival of the old Reef space is excellent. Their big, bright windows on the main floor give an great vantage point for watching the comings and goings on 18th while you enjoy a drink or a snack. Some of the tables in the dining room are set up to be long, almost like a beer hall. This set up is great for meeting up with a large group of old friends, or meeting some new ones. They've also been doing a lot of work on the old roof deck, and if that turns out as nice as the rest of the place, I can see myself spending many a summer evening there.Their draft beer menu is well-rounded, but you really need to be in our increasingly beer enthusiast neighborhood. Now on to the food. It's good. It's simple bar fare. Don't expect anything fancy, and you won't be disappointed. If you go in expecting bar fare, you'll be more than pleased. The sausages are made by their chef, from locally-soured ingredients. And they're still experimenting. They're still figuring out what works best for them, and I have high hope that they'll nail it. I also have to compliment them on the neighborhood open house they hosted this past Sunday (3/9). They opened up their doors to the locals, with free food samples, and great drink specials. It was real nice to meet the managers and staff, especially since I know I'll be coming back. Again, they're not fully there yet, but I am very optimistic about what I've seen so far. Loved the vibe, though the drink prices were little absurd even for DC. Even simple drinks like vodka tonic or vodka cranberry that the girls in our group ordered were a bit ridiculous. Still, the three-floor setup with live music on the second floor was cool and the theme was unique, at least for DC. The place does not feel cramped, ceilings are high, and even though it was crowded, it didn't feel claustrophobic. Music was pretty good too. Tried this place for dinner and it was a huge disappointment. The restaurant floor has a weird setup and awkward tables for groups, plus the lighting was off. The service was poor...our waitress was not knowledgable about their menu and rarely came to check on us, so drink refills were not happening. Came here with my wife for brunch to celebrate our 7th anniversary. Spent half the meal cry-laughing about Brett Stephens melting down over getting called a bedbug. Food is great too, highly recommend. Get the French onion dip, and if your meal comes with toast definitely ask for the honey butter and jam to go with it. It's fine. Not great, not bad. It's more like 4-stars for the Adams Morgan neighborhood, 3 stars if you take it as a restaurant stacked up against others in its category in DC. Renovations are excellent, however, and the place is really nice inside and totally different from The Reef. Ultimately, my recommendation is if you have to be in Adams Morgan (I'm sorry) and are looking for drinks and casual grub, this is your best bet. But if you are planning a night out to dinner with friends or a date, for the price point you can probably find a better spot. read more

Went to a Roofer's for brunch and had an ok experience. Paid $15 for bottomless but the mimosas were super weak, basically paid for bottomless OJ. The food was tasty but felt like our waitress wanted to us out of there quickly even though we still had an hour left of the bottomless deal and there were a bunch of empty tables for new customers. The bar formerly known as Reef. Roofers Union is a redesigned space occupying the bar formerly known as Reef. The old concept involved large aquariums and a dj while the new concept opened up the space and tries to give a more blue collar feel. There are three levels and the rooftop is nice if you can make it up there. I've only been here late night and there is always a wait for the rooftop. There is a decent amount of space on the second floor. The second floor on occasion also hosts a band. The band is usually very loud and usually about 10-15 people gathered in front. There is a decent beer selection and cocktails run around 10-14 bucks. The few times I've been to Roofers Union the music has not been very good. Between an extremely loud band and poor selection of cover songs I usually only last about 30 minutes. Most recently the cover band wasn't too bad but I still didn't make it. Roofers Union isn't my cup of tea but if you're a live music person give it a shot. There's no cover so the only cost is time. read more

Wow is this different from The Reef! Been meaning to come here for ages and finally met a friend for a late brunch today. I made a reservation, though my friend said it usually isn't difficult to just show up and get a table. It was a beautiful day, so I asked for a table by the window, and the hostess was kind enough to give me a really nice table for 4 even though there was just going to be two of us. I arrived early and started with coffee, which was really good; I prefer Latin American beans, and that's what this tasted like. I have a dairy allergy, and the sever was great with helping me navigate suitable options on the menu. I eventually settled on the BLT with fried egg, which came with a side of French fries. The sandwich was extremely delicious! The bacon was especially nice. The fries were good too, but they were really greasy, and someone dumped way too much salt on them. I would have preferred fruit or something else lighter like that. Do they rotate the menu often? I hope so because it wasn't very large, or overly original or fun. Still, the space is beautiful, the service was good--and the mimosa was quite good-- so I'd go back. read more

I went to this place when it first opened with a large group and finally came back as a party of two. I didn't know it was still restaurant week so me and my friend did the RW week menu. The french onion soup was amazing! It had bone marrow and pretzel bread and of course lots of melty gruyere. I tried some the octopus too which was pretty tasty. I had the veggie risotto as an entree since it was the lighter of the pork chop or sausage option. It was okay - it was missing something - meat? bacon? but then it would be vegetarian but maybe more cheese. Dessert, my favorite! I of course ordered the dessert that Majorie made called "breaking the curse" from Top Chef, Season 12? Pretty good, I love the pistachios. It's always been a nice venue with the nice large windows, I remember back when it was The Reef. It's definitely worth it to go back to Roofers Union this winter for the French onion soup. read more

This is a really cool hangout spot! It has two or three floors in addition to a rooftop bar and I really love the atmosphere. It feels slightly different on every floor. The drinks are jarringly expensive, but their concoctions are kind of incredible. I got this drink that had ginger in it that actually had a spicy aftertaste. It was wild. Have eaten here twice and both times were great! Once on rooftop, which was really cool and fun, and once inside, which was nicely decorated and had quick service despite being really crowded. Had Sunday brunch here with some friends. Good service and a nice space, but subpar food. Ordered a burger medium-rare and it was was charred -- way past well done. Three burger orders and everyone had the same experience. If I had a big group and needed last minute space I might go back, but that's about it. They did have a nice local cider. read more

Was very excited to check out the new restaurant in the space formerly known as The Reef...and we weren't disappointed! This place should certainly thrive in Adams Morgan. Came with a friend on a Sunday night and were seated upstairs immediately. The huge windows afforded a nice view of the 18th Street streetscape while we waited for our beers (broad selection). We started with onion rings, which came with a delicious sauce (chipotle, I think). I moved on to a corndog (OMG SO DELICOUS) with melt-in-your-mouth potato chips, while my friend enjoyed a chicken sandwich with a generous portion of sweet potato fries. For $53 (incl. tax) for 3 beers, app, and two entrees, we felt the value was there and our server was great - she offered us samples of beers and was very attentive thorughout the evening. Will definitely be back, especially for the soon-to-be-completed roof space and whatever they decide to offer eventually in the way of brunch! read more

I've been here twice for drinks, once on the first floor and the other time on the rooftop. The cocktails on the first floor were amaaaaaazing. A little pricey but I really enjoyed the creative twist they put on the basics. The rooftop was prettty crowded at 7pm on a Wednesday but on a beautiful summer evening, it was the only place I wanted to be! Service was slow and our IDs were scruntized (guess a lot of underage kids come here?) but there was a wide variety of beer on tap and wasn't outrageously priced. I wanted to love it; I was so impressed with Marjorie on Top Chef. My drink wasn't good- the waiter acknowledged that not many people liked it, but I still ended up paying for it- I left 3/4 of it behind and the mint leaf garnish was brown, wilted & dead looking. My husbands Swordfish was excellent. We loved it- great flavors and well made. My lamb ribs were fatty & not easy to eat. Redemption came with dessert. Our Greek yogurt mousse/pistachio pound cake was fantastic. We went to 4 stars for good, pleasant service, delicious swordfish and a noteworthy dessert. read more

I don't typically do reviews for restaurants but I had such an amazing time at Roofers Union this past Sunday. Service was impeccable, I was seated immediately upon arrival and given a great table on the rooftop which is perfect for people watching. I started by ordering the Lei Me Down punch bowl which was absolutely amazing. I also ordered the chicken livers skewer, prawns and the chicken thigh all of which were great. The server was very friendly and gave great recommendations, and the Manager was fantastic as well, he recommended that I order the Paloma Slushie which was also very tasty.
