As someone who loves a good rooftop moment, I had to check out Rooftop at Exchange Place during our Jersey City trip, and visiting on Juneteenth turned out to be the perfect choice. The weather was absolutely ideal -- warm enough to enjoy being outside but still crisp, with very little humidity. Basically, rooftop weather perfection. The biggest draw here is, without question, the view. The space itself is beautiful, with a nice mix of indoor and outdoor seating, but seeing the Manhattan skyline illuminated at night is what makes this place special. It's one of those views that reminds you why people romanticize New York and the surrounding area so much. They offer a full food menu, although it appeared to be available primarily for guests seated indoors. The outdoor area seemed to focus more on drinks and lighter bites. Just know before you go: this is definitely a splurge spot. Everything is priced at a premium, so prepare yourself accordingly. Unfortunately, the service experience got off to a rough start. Both the security staff and hostess came across as unwelcoming and not particularly friendly. Whether they were overwhelmed or simply having an off night, it didn't create the best first impression. My biggest disappointment, however, was the restroom situation. By around 9:30 p.m., the bathroom was already in pretty terrible condition. Honestly, it was hard to believe it had deteriorated that much in just a few hours, and it gave the impression that it may not have been properly cleaned earlier in the day. Overall, Rooftop at Exchange Place delivers exactly what most people come for: spectacular views, a beautiful atmosphere, and an unforgettable skyline backdrop. Just be prepared for premium prices, a potentially lukewarm welcome, and hope that someone has checked on the bathrooms before you arrive. read more

Have been to this location for the 4th of July in the past and was beyond excited to go back again. I was deeply disappointed and angered by the way management managed the influx of reservations and walk ins. I had an 8:30 reservation and arrived 30 minutes prior (according to their strict directions via text). I waited in line for an hour and 15 minutes and only received a wristband as the fireworks were going off and after arguing with the manager Jude. He consistently let walk ins in before dealing with any reservations. We also paid 35 dollars in advance. Once I got up to the rooftop, I was informed I would have to wait longer as they were kicking people out of our table. I asked to speak with a manager and again was forced to wait 35 minutes and witnessed a hostess quit mid shift. I do want to note, while waiting in line, a kind security guard informed me that the manager was letting people in who were late to their reservation. For example, a couple came at 8:00 for their 7:15 reservation and were let in. This was a horrible experience and will never be back. I understand the craziness of the 4th of July but this could have been avoided. Do not spend your money here, there are plenty of amazing places in Jersey City. Check out District! Been wanting to come here for the longest time and finally got the opportunity for pre-birthday drinks! Yeah, I celebrate the entire month. Upscale venue with amazing views!great servers! Shout out to Karen and Adrianna, though Adrianna had to go help someone else. Both very friendly. The drinks were very good. We shared some appetizers - chicken sliders, meatballs and potstickers. All very good. We moved to the outdoor area and it was nice! Great date spot. There's also a guy who goes around asking if you want your picture taken. We plan to return and hopefully do not encounter the negative service I keep reading about. One star removed for the very loud music indoors. Well. The view from the rooftop is nice, especially at sunset. But the best viewpoint is roped off for most customers. The food was good, but not of the quality it should be for the prices on the menu. The tempura looked like it was previously frozen, and the portions for everything (especially the tiramisu) were quite disappointing. If you're not eating outside or facing the skyline, this place may not be worth it. You can get pretty much the same view from the pier below. read more

Ambiance: Sooo pretty! The view was spectacular, especially at sunset as we watched the day turn into night and see the NYC lights. Food: Was on the pricier side, but portions were bigger than expected, and all the food was yummy! We got the bang bang shrimp, burrata toast, waffle fries, and lemon pepper wings. I enjoyed everything and wasn't too hungry so I was able to bring the waffle fries home. We had the tres leches for dessert, which was great as welll. Drinks: The drinks were delicious! Definitely expensive, but well worth it, in my opinion. If you come here just for drinks and a view, you'll be happy. The Rooftop offers one of the best views of Manhattan from the New Jersey side. The space has a club vibe with DJ playing on a Saturday night. Come during sunset for the most incredible reflection against the city skyline. While the view is gorgeous and vibes are fun, what really set the bar was their service for me. My friend and I were enjoying our drinks when some lady backed up into our table and spilled my drink. She was so caught up trying to take a photo and completely ignored what she did. I was appalled and so annoyed. When I told a waiter so they could clean up the broken glass, he told me to let the manager know what happened. The manager was incredibly quick to get me a new drink and made sure all the glass was cleaned up. She definitely helped turned my night around, which was not any fault of the bar at all. The 4th of July event was a disaster! We had 8:30 reservations for rooftop seating and fireworks viewing. We were told to arrive 30-35 minutes early. We actually arrived around 6:30 to make sure we were in the right place and noticed a long line outside already to get in. We decided to get in line then and waited an hour to get in. The staff had the line divided in two lines, one for reservations and one for walk ups. Unfortunately, they allowed walk ups to go before reservations. I was told they were allowing 5 walk ups for every 10 reservations. When we finally got in there were so many people on the rooftop standing near the dining tables waiting for fireworks, most of whom did not have dining reservations. When we did check in with the hostess, she didn't care about our concerns with eating while everyone was standing at your table. After the staff did attempt to move people swaying from the rooftop dining, there were no tables left there for our reservation. Luckily we never got our table, because it would have been a horrible experience to eat with everyone standing all around you blocking the fireworks. Once the fireworks started the crowd rushed the dining area to watch and the staff gave up trying to keep them out. We saved ourselves $150 min per person and still got to see the fireworks, but I felt sorry for all the people seated and eating when the fireworks started. We will never go back! read more

For the past six years, Rooftop at Exchange Place has been one of our favorite places in Jersey City. We've celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, work accomplishments, hosted family and friends from out of town, and made Fourth of July a tradition here. It has been the backdrop for some of our best memories. Unfortunately, this year's Fourth of July turned it into one of our worst. To reserve a table, our group was required to prepay $35 per person weeks in advance. We happily did because we trusted the reservation system and expected the experience we've always had. Just hours before our reservation, OpenTable (on behalf of the restaurant) texted us instructing everyone to arrive 30-35 minutes early because of the expected crowds. So we did exactly that. We arrived at 7:40 PM for our 8:30 PM reservation, assuming we'd wait a little, head upstairs, grab a cocktail, and be seated on time. Instead, reservation holders were left standing outside while people paying a cash cover for general admission were continuously allowed upstairs ahead of us. Watching people without reservations enter while those who had prepaid weeks in advance were kept outside made absolutely no sense. When we booked three weeks ago, we were strictly told our table was limited to 90 minutes, and even worked with the event coordinator to choose an 8:30 reservation because she said it would be the perfect time to enjoy dinner while watching the fireworks. Instead, we weren't allowed upstairs until 9:05 PM--just as the fireworks were beginning. After finally making it upstairs, we were told our table was still occupied and had to watch the fireworks from the hostess stand inside instead of from the table we had already paid for, which also required $150/pp minimum at the table. By the time a hostess even returned to check for our table, the fireworks--the entire reason we booked--were over. The customer service was even worse than the logistics. We asked multiple times to speak with a manager, along with countless other frustrated guests. No manager ever came. Not once. There was no apology, no explanation, and no accountability. Ironically, the people who showed us the most kindness were the security staff. They genuinely felt bad for everyone waiting outside in nearly 100-degree heat and repeatedly apologized despite having no control over the situation. One hostess even quit during the chaos. Another kindly brought a few guests water after hours of standing outside. Those employees deserved far better leadership than what they were given. At the end of the night, all we wanted was someone to acknowledge what happened, apologize, and refund the reservation fees for an experience we never received. Instead, we were ignored. This wasn't simply a long wait. This was complete mismanagement of a major event. Reservations were sold with expectations the restaurant couldn't deliver, communication was nonexistent, and paying customers were treated like an inconvenience. It's heartbreaking because this place meant something to us. After six years of making memories here, our final Fourth of July in Jersey City should have been special. Instead, it became a lasting reminder of how quickly poor leadership and nonexistent hospitality can destroy years of goodwill. This wasn't just disappointing--it was an embarrassment to an establishment that was once one of the best parts of living in Jersey City. We won't be back. read more

This is the spot to go when you want to find a space with a view, where you can forget the passing hours over stunning cocktails. This was a perfect setting for a long awaited homecoming. We arrived shortly after they opened, at 4, and we were probably the third party there. The layout of the space is open and allows every party to get a great view. There is a VIP space at the front right when you walk in, that doubles as a live performance area. This area has the best view of the skyline, but with a nearly 360 view, you can move around and take in the space. If you want to have a quiet space or intimate gathering, go early. It almost feels like you've rented the space out. People started to fill in around 7. I'd recommend coming early for the sunset. The entrance is on York St and is up a few small steps / ramp into an elevator. The doorman will usher you up to the rooftop unless you are staying in the hotel. When we got there, many bartenders were at the ready setting up for a packed evening. Our bartender took her time crafting our drinks and adding personal design touches. I loved the attention to detail. The cocktail prices ranged from $17-$22. They have a long list of spirits and a mix of wine and beers. The large open bar space is perfect for chatting with strangers. All of the staff seemed up for a conversation if you're going solo. My friend and I found ourselves chatting with a couple from Ohio who were looking for an elevated night out. The outdoor space has long rectangular fire pits, which were flicking and necessary on a chilly night. Some people chose to sit outside, but in winter the winds pick up and I wouldn't recommend putting your drink down. This place, especially during sunset hours, feels like a glimpse of paradise. The view is absolutely breathtaking--it's impossible not to be mesmerized. Our cocktails were also quite delicious. However, I can't say the same for the food. The menu is very limited, and the selections may not appeal to everyone. For example, there was only one pasta option, and it came with a spicy sauce. If the menu were expanded and the flavors enhanced, the dining experience could be significantly improved. Even though there were plenty of outdoor tables available, we were told they were all reserved. Instead, we ordered beers at the bar and stood outside to enjoy the view. My wife and I made a reservation on the 4th of a July however, that meant nothing here. We booked our reservation weeks in advance and put a 70 dollar deposit down for our table. The outside security was a disaster as they allowed people a cut the line and did not keep any kind of order as to who was allowed in and who was waiting the longest. Those who pushed their way to the front were rewarded. The general manager named Jude was allowing those without reservations to pay cash and enter before those with reservations. No questions were answered and all questions were met with rude responses. We completely missed the fireworks and after waiting another 30 minutes to speak with Jude, he never arrived. They are openly running a scam and have no remorse for doing so. Do not spend your money or time at this place. read more

My party was not brought to a table for another half an hour, which resulted in us asking for a refund. This is when the staff said they would grab their manager Jude, who after another 30 minutes never showed up. The staff openly blamed Jude again after this. It got to the point we had to get our money back as claiming the purchase of the reservation was fraudulent with our bank, luckily they accepted. Do not recommend it is a total scam. read more

It was a rainy Wednesday night and this placed was jam packed! The outside portion of the roof was closed due to the rain. Service was fine. No issues there. I sat at the bar, had a couple of drinks and shots, ordered some fries. Needed to keep it light. The truffle garlic fries weee delicious. The shots were real shots, and not those tiny plastic thimble shots you see in the city sometimes. Service was fine. No issues there. Definitely understandable for a bar like this to have a pricier cocktail menu, most range around $18 per drink, but our overall bill came out to $42 for two cocktails due to a service fee plus a credit card fee that we were unaware of before coming!
