Rook is fantastic, but this location is definitely lackluster in terms of service and coffee quality. Staff are fine, but don't quite know how to brew properly. Coffee here is always more burnt than the other locations, and not nearly as flavorful. They really need to re-evaluate the training process or QC at this branch. Try any other branch before judging Rook; by far the best one being the Red Bank location. read more

Central Jersey is severely lacking in local independent coffee shops so when I realized this Rook opened near my work, I was so excited! I would highly recommend the New Orleans coffee, both iced and hot are great! One things I really like about Rook is that you can text their phone number with your order and it will be ready in 15 minutes. Once you arrive, there is a separate pick-up line for mobile orders. Super fast and easy -- perfect since it can get busy in the mornings. Also be sure to snag one of their loyalty cards -- buy 10 drinks get one free! I'm already 3 drinks in ;) The only thing I would really appreciate is if they had seating. Their decor/environment is nice and it would be nice to lounge around and do some work or catch up on some reading. read more

I originally saw this coffee shop on instagram with an ad for pumpkin cold brew and I had to visit! It is located in a parking lot so there is ample parking. The inside is clean and modern. There is no seating so it's more of a grab and go place. I ordered the pumpkin cold brew and was not disappointed! Their coffee doesn't use the traditional sugary syrups that pumpkin usually has so it was the perfect blend of spices. I brought four of the concentrated bottles home! Rook is my all time favorite coffee shop. I tend to make the 45 minute drive pretty regularly to grab a cold brew and stock up on some New Orleans cold brew concentrate bottles to take home. I'm a big fan of their seasonal cold brews. The pumpkin is my other favorite. The cinnamon vanilla is also phenomenal. It reminds me of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Unfortunately, they don't sell that one as concentrate to go, which is a huge bummer. Hopefully they will continue to expand west and make the drive a bit shorter. read more

Came in for the s'mores cold brew but they were unfortunately out. Not a problem! The gentleman recommended the coconut mocha and it was a great choice. My only complaint was it looked like not all the offerings were on the menu, only saw the coffees and none of the teas. Great coffee and friendly staff. The ONLY issue I have with this place are the lids on their hot coffee. I've popped in on 3 separate occasions to grab a hot coffee on my way down to a business meeting in the area. ALL 3 times the lid on my hot coffee came off as I was driving and went to pick up the beverage from my cup holder. This is dangerous and frustrating. I've been drinking coffee for about 10 years and never had an issue with lids popping off except for when I order coffee at Rook. The lids they use on the hot coffee seem to be flimsy and thin and should be upgraded. Please change your hot lids to something more secure. Your premium coffee deserves. *I have updated my review from 3 stars to 4 stars. After learning about my experience this company contacted me, addressed the problem and made the necessary change. Disappointed with the service. The young lady with glasses and piercings taking orders was flighty, and the customer before me was having trouble placing his simple order. He seemed frustrated. I asked for a cold brew with a little ice, and was told that I would only get about half a cup of coffee, because they are only allowed to fill it a certain amount. I've never heard of such a thing. I was excited for a local company to open a coffee shop in Freehold. This town needs more local businesses. I was excited to give them my business. So far I have visited 3 times. I have only tried the cold brews. I tried the New Orleans, Mocha Style, and the Cinnamon Vanilla. My favorite far and away is the cinnamon vanilla. It is delicious! Their cold brew has taken some getting used to for me. My favorite cold coffee is normally a popular chain's sugary sweet version. And my favorite hot version is a different popular chain's lattes. I do wish I could get a latte here! Their coffee flavor is so interesting I have been ditching my favorites and coming here instead. So, I would say their coffee is like a fine wine. You have to get used to it, and then you realize you love it better than the mainstream options. I wish they were open later (I swear I crave their coffee everyday at 6PM), and I wish they had more bagels/their bagels lasted longer into their hours. Thanks for coming to Freehold! Best coffee in the Central NJ area by far. Each cup is brewed individually and there are a number of blends from mild to bold. My personal favorite is the New Orleans blend which is a bold coffee to which they add ground chicory to the brewing process. It is extremely smooth and it is my morning "go to"coffee. Add to this, they have the friendliest Baristas around (Shout out Mike, Alyssa, Christine, Kayla, Robin, Steve and all of the crew at both the Manalapan and Freehold locations). I tried Rook for the 1st time today and can i say they have a new fan!. I tried the Costa Rican hot coffee light and sweet and it was amazing. I also tried one of the delicious pastries that were available..the apple danish to be precise and it was fantastic. Would definitely recommend that you give them a chance. read more

This was my first visit to Rook Coffee. I came during the evening, and I could see that the staff was in "end of day mode"- cleaning up, etc. I was a little disappointed that I was not allowed to sample some of the cold coffee options before making a final decision. The barista suggested I try the New Orleans roast, since it was one of the most popular choices. If I go back, I will probably order something else, because it was not my favorite. I'm willing to give it another shot, since I do think there are other roasts that my palate will prefer. Next time I will have a better idea of what to expect. read more

Suburban take-out coffee for suburban drivers -- no seating. Plus, like a corner bodega,there is no choice in adding cream or milk amounts; they do it for you. (But this isn't $1.25 coffee, it's at least $2.55 coffee.) Good place if you want to spend ten minutes exiting Rt. 537, parking, ordering, reentering 537 to drink coffee you can't mix to your own liking. Was looking forward to this place. I love this coffee place and I go here every morning on my way to school. But, I will never return to this location because of an encounter I had with one of the baristas. My sister and I walked in around closing time and ordered our usual order. We waited a short amount of time but, when the woman gave us our coffees she said "Just so you know we're closed" with much attitude. Let me start off by saying I love Rook. I go to the Red Bank location daily. I was in Freehold yesterday for business and decided to stop in and try the newest location. Beautiful inside. Here's the problem. My New Orleans didn't taste like coffee. It tasted like water. After the first sip I took the cap off to check the color. I literally thought I got a cup of hot water. I'm going to chalk it up to the employees being new and needing some practice time. I would be shocked if they haven't received complaints about this from other people. I had a disappointing experience here for my first time due to lack of customer service towards me. I opened the door for this elder man named Bob and waited holding the door for him as I saw him walking towards the coffee shop. Even though I got to the coffee shop first, I allowed him in front of me to order. He knew very well I got to the coffee shop before him. Instead of being considerate that there was someone behind him, he then proceeded to talk about random things to the barista with glasses ordering the coffee for the next 7 minutes as I waited patiently behind him. FYI, I learned his name was Bob from this long conversation. At one point in the conversation, he even looked back at me and then continued his conversation for the next several minutes. Then another barista asked the people behind me what they wanted to order. I spoke up and said I was waiting a while to put in my order. This was my first time in the shop so I was asking what the barista recommended. As I was talking to this barista, the barista with the glasses talking to the guy Bob says to the people behind me "oh sorry about that" referring to me speaking up and ordering in front of them. I did not receive an apology from this barista with glasses. When the barista with glasses gave the drink to Bob, she wished him a good day. When my drink order was called from this same barista, I received no "have a good day". So after I received my drink order, I talked to the barista with glasses. I am just so turned off by this particular location that I would not return. I am also disappointed by the lack of consideration (normal human decency) from both Bob and the barista with glasses. If someone opened the door for me after arriving to this coffee shop first and allowed me to order first, I would've been considerate and ordered quickly so the person behind me could also order. I would not have proceeded to talk with the barista for the next 7 minutes. It's quite obvious the staff have their favorites here and I'm not one of them. read more
