So glad I work right next to my favorite tried and true place for banh mi in Houston. If you see me here.. oops, it's because I forgot my lunch. Might be doing that more often. I usually only order a banh mi here, but last time I came I noticed Roostar serves half orders of banh mi with a side of your choice (fries, salad, soup). I opted for this because their fries are my absolute favorite - they come in a curly wedge shape and are perfectly crispy and soft. Highly recommend with a side of garlic butter. The banh mi was fantastic as usual, even as a half order. I was worried their would not be enough tofu compared to the full size sandwich but the ratio was exactly the same, which I was happy about. I always order my sandwich with the whole shabang sauce and sriracha inside. Highly recommend!! With this meal I treated myself to their vietnamese iced coffee. If you love a super strong but sweet coffee flavor, this is for you. Amazing as always. In total for half a banh mi with both sauces, fries, and a coffee I spent $14. Not bad at all considering coffee is pricey and a full banh mi is $9. Without the coffee it would've been closer to $10. Still arguably the best Banh Mi / Vietnamese Sandwich that you can get in the Houston area. Other food that they serve here are pretty darn good as well. The customer service, however, feels off. Yes, it's COVID. Yes, it's counter order only. Yes, you're wearing a face mask. But I can still tell from the expression on your face whether or not you're smiling or being friendly. The last several times I came here, the cashier was just eh. No 'hello', no 'how are you', no nothing. Oh well, I guess. I got their Grilled Pork Banh mi and was not disappointed--the meat is a little salty but works well since the bread and veg aren't as seasoned. My sister has been hyping this place up to me but now I believe the hype. This place is literally so good! We grabbed a couple of banh mis with chopped ribeye and the meat was so tender and delicious! The vegetables were so crispy and the bread was nice and crispy too! This location gets busy. We've been to their other locations but moved and found this one recently. The pork banh mi is delicious and full of flavor. They are consistent in their cook which is hard to say about a lot of places. It's a generous portion, but my favorite is their fries. The twisted shape makes for very crispy fries and it is cut like potato wedge thickness. If you love potatoes fry this is the one to try. Their prices are also really reasonable for the area, but of course it is higher than the prices in Chinatown banh mi spots. It can be a bit noisy, but makes for a good lunch spot. read more

Don't you just hate it when a favorite restaurant goes downhill? I happened to be in the area, so I thought I'd swing by Roostar on Gessner & Long Point for one of my all-time favorite grilled pork banh mi sandwiches, complete with over easy egg and a shmear of pâté. It had been pre-covid since I had been there last, and I was excited to indulge in one of their sandwiches for old time's sake. But sadly, the sandwich that had once been loaded with flavor and nestled in a warm, toasty bun wasn't to be today. (You know that kind of bun; crackly toasty on the outside; soft and pillowy on the inside.) This time, the bread was so dry, the entire top portion of the bread turned to crumbs and fell apart into my to-go container. If it weren't for the pâté gluing the bottom of the bread to the contents of the sandwich, I would have lost the bottom of the bread as well. And it might have been a good thing that there was not a lot of meat in the sandwich this time, because the once melt-in-your-mouth pork, flavored to perfection, had been replaced with a few pieces of dry, rubbery, sinewy pork grizzle that left me doing double time on the chewing, and picking tendon out of my teeth the rest of the day. On the plus side: The rest of the contents of the "deconstructed" sandwich (cilantro, carrots, jalapeno, egg, pâté) were good and fresh, however. I would have also liked a larger cup for my +/- $2.80 fountain drink; it was really small. The ambiance is fun, great visual menu, nice vibe. I'm going to give them 3 stars right now, because I'm really hoping that they were just having an off day today, and because their banh mi I had had several times in the past was, in my opinion, one of the best in H-Town. The banh mi was really salty and I can tell when walking in and the menu it's more catered to Americans. The bun was crispy and the pork was so tender and seasoned perfectly. There was a perfect balance of meat and veggies (lots of cilantro and I love cilantro). The vietnamese coleslaw was very unique and yummy. It came with peanuts and some thin chips on top. The acidic sauce completed the dish very well and made you want to eat more and more of the dish. First time trying this spot. It was ok, expected it to be ok but was blah. I got the half banh mi with steak and egg rolls. The banh mi wasn't bad, it was my first time having it with steak and it good. It had 1 thin jalapeño sliced as big as my half sandwich, would have like it chopped smaller and more of it. So, I got to try them out one Saturday afternoon, and they didn't disappoint. We ordered their special and tofu banh mis. The special had all the ingredients I loved in a banh mi: pate, spicy jalapeños, cilantro, pickled carrots/daikon, pork belly, ham, and crispy bread. The tofu banh mi had a wonderful lemon pepper seasoning to it. It had all the veggie fixings in it as well. The egg rolls (not pictured) were bomb as well. I'm not quite sure what I ate since a friend of mine picked up a bunch of stuff and just brought it to share with a group for a lunch meeting. The sandwich was solid, the bread crisp and soft at the same time, with a good amount of meat (often a problem with other banh mi I've had). I also really enjoyed the fried spring roll things that I think had pork in them? I wrapped them in a piece of lettuce so I would feel healthier, but of course I still put fish sauce on them. I was pleasantly surprised by Roostar! I am not a big fan of dark chicken meat but they cooked theirs pretty well! It was also super easy to customize the box so it fit what I could eat. I tried a few bites of the crispy tofu box and it was delicious, I think I'll get that next time. I do wish there were more pork-less options and more variety on their sauce choices but overall neither drawback impacted my meal. I am curious as to how their bahn mi is, I'm excited to try it. Two strikes and they're out .... of the routine rotation. This place used to be our default go-to place but no more. Customer service has been off-putting and rude. Sadly tonight was another issue. I got there around 9PM. I get it - it's late and they're closing in an hour but that's no excuse for inattentiveness or any attitude. I shouldn't have to try and give you my order 3-4 times. I shouldn't have to follow you around the counter so you can be in a spot where you supposedly can hear me better when the first time I gave the order, you were standing right in front of me. Also, when I am trying to order, don't ignore me in the middle of it to take dirty trays from another customer who came after me in line and then walk off for awhile before coming back and suddenly having a hearing problem. Talk about a hidden gem. Wow I am blown away by Roostar Vietnamese grill. That was the best pork Vietnamese sandwich I've ever had in my life. I've eaten is all over Houston and let me tell you this one really took the cake. The grilled pork here is simply made to perfection, every single bite was like a tasty party going on in your mouth. The French bread was so fresh. All the vegetables were fresh. The sauces are used tasted so good. The jalapeño was so fresh. I have to say this was the best Vietnamese sandwich I've ever had in my life. It was so good I got one to go just because it was that good. Yes there are a few dollars more than your average Vietnamese sandwich bar but let me tell you these few dollars go along way because they go above and beyond. So I wouldn't even question the two dollar more you pay here because they are so worth it. Absolutely worth it. This will be my go to for all Vietnamese sandwiches moving forward. That was such a great meal. The staff is really good as well. They brought my food out curbside. Absolutely well deserving five star. If you've not tried this place this is a must try. Houston has one of the largest Vietnamese populations in America and I wanted to try at least one Vietnamese eatery before coming back to LA. Roostar Vietnamese Grill happened to pop up on my radar because it appears to be a popular destination for Vietnamese sandwich (aka banh mi) in Houston and our party came to this location for a quick bite. Roostar was featured on Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S in 2015 (formerly known as Vietnam Poblano and rebranded to Roostar Vietnamese Grill in 2016) and there's also another location near Galleria/Uptown. Parking was pretty easy and there was no line when we got here at 7 PM. Menu: Unlike most other banh mi places I have visited in LA, you can ask for add-ons such as avocado, pate, and egg to your banh mi. Price for each banh mi is about $5.50 and don't forget to use the Yelp check-in deal to claim one free spiced roasted corn. You can also create your own "box" meal and they also offer papaya salad, egg rolls (no spring rolls here), iced coffees, wings, and alphabetic / Thai chicken soups. *** Honey Green Tea (bottled, $2.65): You can probably get this bottle drink at 99 Ranch market, but I actually thought it was not a bad beverage because it was only a tad sweet. Pork Belly Sandwich (jalapenos, pickled carrots, cilantro, garlic aioli, soy sauce, cucumber - $5.50): To this date my friends still questioned me on why I did not order the "Special" (one with ham and pate) because that's supposed to be the "standard" order when it comes to comparing with other banh mi places. Anyhow - bread had crispy texture and I thought garlic aloei made the sandwich pretty decent, but I definitely had a better $5 banh mi in LA (e.g. Banh Mi My Tho in Alhambra, CA). Beef Alphabet Soup ($3.45): It is one of the dishes you typically find for the 7 courses of beef (Bò 7 món). The food is consistently great, the iced coffee is strong and smooth, and the staff is attentive and welcoming. Make sure to pimp out your sandwich with avocado, egg, or extra garlic aioli (or all of the above). Admittedly, this place is small and the parking situation can be tough. If you absolutely cannot find a spot, pull into the large lot across the street, order to-go from their app (usually ready in less than 20min) and take a trip over to the 3 Brothers Bakery on Kingsride while you wait.
