First of all there was a line outside the building going down the street like it was worth it but it was definitely a huge disappointment to realize that it was not. When we finally did get inside after waiting for what seemed like forever we were seated and waited another 30 mins before they even took our order. As we sat waiting for our food we saw our waiter pass multiple times and ask the people at the table in front of us (who were seated after us ) if they needed anything and then they were served before us. When we received our food it was all cold as if it had been sitting and when we asked the waiter about remaking it he said no they couldn't do that which was no big deal because we just ended up saying forget it and left, unsatisfied unhappy and still hungry. -100/10 do NOT recommend. read more

We visited on a hot summer day and added our name to the Yelp waitlist. Upon arrival, it was packed with people and there was no obvious place arriving guests were supposed to check in. One person was walking around the restaurant with a tablet and later we noticed there was someone as the desk upon entry but they were not making it obvious they also had a tablet for checking in. Once we got seated it took a long time to get water and have our order taken. The food was just okay. It felt like they were overwhelmed, so maybe a different day would have been better. read more

Not a bad breakfast spot! When I walked in, I could tell people were loving the food as one side was dancing in his chair. I sat at the breakfast bar and ordered coffee (which was delicious). I ordered a breakfast plate with eggs, sausage, and toast. The eggs and the toast were amazing (the jam...OMG). However, the cook fried the hell out of my sausage patties so they were not tasty at all. Other than that, the staff was friendly but I was kinda surprised by the prices! I don't really leave bad reviews but this was a really bad experience. We stopped in to have some brunch. Two people were out front smoking when we walked in. It turned out one of them was the host who then walked in behind us. After seating us at a table we asked someone if we could move to a booth(there were six booths available next to us). We were told that section was closed that day even though two other booths had people eating there. From that point it took about 10 minutes for a server to approach our table(there were about 6 other table occupied in the whole restaurant). They didn't seem like they wanted to be there so we put our food order in right away. My food came out first, then my wife's about 5 minutes later. My food was decent but my wife's was really disappointing. We had been here in the past and enjoyed it but clearly something has changed. There are a lot of good options for brunch in St Louis and it would be a much better idea if you're looking to go to one of those. read more

We pre-joined waitlist via Yelp before arriving, checked in with the host on arrival, & still waited in restaurant 20min before getting a notification we'd been canceled from the waitlist. I ordered bottomless coffee but no one ever came around with refills. The food itself was lacklustre. The biscuits were terrible and the gravy had some off taste. We didn't send anything back as it took so long to arrive. But we mentioned the cold food & refills to the server as we were getting our bill. This dish tastes homemade, the potatoes seasoned perfectly, the andouille sausage has the right spice, and the gravy is the glue that keeps it together. The coffee is great, it's for sure not "restaurant coffee" it's got that "coffee bar" taste. Service is great, can't go wrong sitting at the bar. This old school store turned restaurant makes for a great spot to people watch. The menu has many options, and I'll be trying to check them off as I visit St. Louis. I've never written a restaurant review before and, to tell the truth, I very rarely eat out. I have a daily habit of walking to the downtown Schnucks to pick fresh ingredients for that day's meal or the meal of the week if I'm cooking up a large batch of something. Nevertheless, after having said all that, I *NEED* to tell you what happened today at Rooster on Washington Avenue. During my walk to the grocery store I came across two very young children who were out in the cold. The temperature was a bit over 20° with a 'feels like' temperature of 10°. It was especially cold, bitter, and the wind's teeth were extra sharp. Both children were wearing winter coats, but they did not have hats or gloves and the youngest was in shorts. I approached them and, after a brief introduction, they told me they were hungry. After asking and understanding that there was no adult with them, I glanced around for the nearest restaurant and there, about a block away, was a small sign jutting from brick in the shape of an egg. It felt like I had just spotted a lighthouse. We walked to Rooster and stepped inside. The three of us waited briefly by the 'Please Wait to be Seated' podium. A waitress with a smile walked over, welcomed us, and took us to a booth. She handed each of the children a menu that was folded up with some crayons. The children unwrapped their menus/activity sheets. I read off the choices and they each chose pancakes - one with strawberries and the other with chocolate chips. While they waited for their food to arrive, they each flipped to the other side of their menus and quietly began coloring in a picture of a rooster who was proudly strutting on a hillside. A collection of these colored roosters was on display across a good-sized section of wall in the restaurant. Each of these pictures was proudly stamped with the scribbled name of the child who had completed their individual masterpiece. I took this moment to speak to the waitress in private. I shared the situation and asked her to contact a social worker for a welfare check. She readily took charge and did this. I returned to the booth, sitting on a chair at the edge of the table. For the next 40 minutes the children ate their pancakes, one asking me to cut it for her. We talked and I asked some softball questions relating to school and their most recent Christmas. I made comments regarding their finished colored rooster pictures. The littlest one beamed as I pointed out how much detail she had put into her sun in the sky - how the inner part was red because it's the hottest, but the lines spiking out of the sun were yellow, because yes, the rays are still very warm, but not as hot as the red center. But the clock kept ticking and outside help still hadn't come. The waitress suddenly appeared again with two hot chocolates, each topped with whipped cream, and placed them onto the table before each child. She had just bought some more time for help to come. And then help arrived. I took a moment to speak to the children directly in an attempt to provide some additional comfort as they moved to a new set of adults who were there to help them. Before moving to St. Louis, I worked in Southeast Asia on antitrafficking efforts. I worked directly with children who were severely traumatized by unimaginable abuses. After nine years of that, I returned to the U.S. and focused on helping individual children within the foster care system. That was another seven years. I tell you this to say that I know what harm looks likes, but I also know what help looks like and today, I saw help from a single waitress who greeted the children with a smile when they first walked in. This waitress then became my partner for about an hour as we tried to make sure these two little ones were safe. After the children walked out of Rooster with their new helpers, the waitress started to cry. I patted her on the back, literally, and I wanted to say more, but she excused herself to a staff only section in the back. Alone, I then went to pay the bill for the two pancakes and the two cups of hot cocoa, but the manager told me there would be no charge. I thanked him, walked out of Rooster, and continued my walk. There's this Mr. Rogers quote that lives with me where he shares: "You know, my mother used to say, a longtime ago, whenever there would be a real catastrophe that was on in the movies or on the news, she would say, 'Always look for the helpers. There will always be helpers, you know, even just on the sidelines.' That's why I think that if news programs could make a conscious effort of showing rescue teams or showing medical people, anybody who is coming into a place where there's a tragedy, to be sure that they include that because if you look for the helpers, you'll know that there's hope." I met an amazing helper at Rooster today. I didn't eat a bite myself, but I saw the soul of this particular restaurant. I saw kindness, empathy, patience, and care. Five stars! read more

When I gave the host my name, she said the only reservation under that name was for a party of 1--and it wasn't mine, as the phone number didn't match. I politely explained the situation and even showed her the real-time updates on my phone confirming my check-in. Rather than trying to help, she dismissed the information and told me the app only gives an "estimate" and that it didn't prove anything. I calmly asked if there was any way to look up my spot by phone number or name, but she was curt and said no, again with noticeable attitude. When I asked if I could at least put my name in again, she said yes--but with an hour-plus wait. The whole interaction was unnecessarily rude. I was polite and trying to offer solutions, but was met with indifference and condescension. I work around the corner and tend to order pick up from here. I like the smoothies - but every time I order and I get to the place they tell me they don't have it. Today, I ordered food for pick up and it was supposed to be ready by 10:28. I got there at 10:45 and was told my food wasn't ready. At 10:56 I asked how much longer it would be. I was then told they didn't have the smoothie I ordered so I exchanged it. Then a different staff member told me they couldn't find my ticket in the kitchen. A third staff member asked me for my order and it turns out it was in the front the entire time. So, I got my food 20 minutes later and COLD. I will not be back. I'm visiting STL, and found good reviews for Rooster. It was right around the corner from my Hotel, and I love Breakfast! I added myself to the Waitlist via the Yelp App, walked to the restaurant and let the Host Stand know I was on the Yelp Waitlist. That's where everything went sideways.. Being a busy Saturday morning, I was told that the wait would be about 20-25 minutes for me, a party of 1. 30 minutes later, after I had seen a lot of people be seated, I approached the Host Stand and inquired about my position on the Waitlist. I was the #3 in line, which was an improvement from where I started.. #22! Over the next 30 minutes, I watched the Waitlist on the Yelp App run past me, as new parties (2 tops, 4 tops and a 13 top) kept passing me by on the Waitlist. After more than an hour in total, I went back to the Host stand and asked to have my name removed from the Waitlist and to speak to the Manager. I chatted with Zach the manager about the situation. He was sympathetic, and explained to me that the Host had never "checked me in" for my reservation. I offered him to take my situation as a learning opportunity. At about 2:10pm the music starts BLASTING, Huey Lewis and the Blues, "Hit the B Square." I mean, they really cranked it up to 10 notches past nightclub level. Between the song choice and the sound decibels they were clearly sending a message. We only had our food for 10 minutes!! The server was not horrible, but he wasn't good either. I confronted him about the music situation. His response was that management does that to hurry the staff along, not the customers. I call b.s. on that there! FOOD: Vegan Slinger: 7/10 - this dish was pretty good. Vegan sausage was ok but could've used a bit more seasoning. The breakfast potatoes were very good but there were only a couple of bites of those. Tofu scramble was good, but again there wasn't much of it. The gravy was decent but there wasn't enough for all the bread. Why so skimpy on these items?? The focaccia bread was surprisingly very soft. With this vegan bread and recipe they could easily make vegan french toast and biscuits, and then pancakes; the fact that they don't is just lazy. My son and I hit Rooster this morning... in from NYC, and we were told that Rooster is THE PLACE for breakfast in STL. The verdict? Meh. The restaurant wasn't terribly crowded, and we were seated quickly. The venue was large and spacious, and has an inviting decor. Our server came quickly, and she was polite and courteous. We each ordered The Farmer's Platter (3 eggs, sourdough toast, Rooster potatoes, sausage, bacon), and a lemon crepe to share between us. Not an epic order, by any means... especially in a restaurant that was clearly not overwhelmed with customers... yet our food took 25 minutes to arrive. No explanation or excuse offered. The "bottomless coffee" I drank in the meantime was strong, if a little sour. My son's cold brew was apparently better. As for our breakfast? The positives: the sausage was excellent- well seasoned and slightly spicy. The potatoes were likewise very good. The bacon was crispy, but pretty middling quality overall. And the eggs... well, they had zero salt or pepper... or flavor of any kind. And if that was three eggs on our plates, they must have been laid by a micro-chicken, LOL. Two forkfuls, maybe three... tops. The lemon crepe was decent. The lemon curd and blueberry compote were very tasty. But the streusel was surprisingly bland. And the crepe itself seemed overdone- it was hard to cut through, even with a sharp knife. Finally, when our server came with our check and we went to pay, the tipping options on her automated card reader began at 20%. Sorry, but I find that rather presumptuous and aggressive as a starting point. We had really been looking forward to dining at Rooster, and we left somewhat disappointed. So the back kitchen must be understaffed today or just not be built for the number of clients that they can get.
