If this review were completely about personal preference, I would probably just give this two stars because it's a bit too "catered event" for my taste. At the same time, I realize that the Roostertail is stunning and has lots of experience catering weddings and proms so they would work well with people who want this sort of aesthetic. I went here a few years ago when I was engaged to the wrong dude and checking out locations for the wedding and reception. I really wanted to do something beautiful by the water and the internet led me to the Roostertail. I scheduled a date for a facility tour and a hostess showed us around. It looks like your standard upscale reception hall, but with an edge because the view of the water is amazing. There are floor to ceiling windows. They can even offer fireworks overlooking the lake! However, the Roostertail reminds me of my boyfriend's description of the five star hotel he has to stay in when he commutes -- it looks amazing and beautiful, but it makes him want to gauge his eyes out at the same time because it's so sterile and typical. For me, the menu leaves something to be desired because it is all the usual meals that you have had a million times before at a million other weddings -- filet mignon, some sort of salad, a fancy chicken. If you enjoy that sort of cuisine then the quality is absolutely first class. Unfortunately, they do not offer anything ethnic. There's no harm in asking, however, if you want the chef to consider a special recipe for your special day. If you want a fail-safe event that's guaranteed to look good and are not interested in doing anything adventurous, then this is a good place to look into. The staff was friendly and informative, and it seemed like they would be willing to work out special requests -- just in case you do want to put a unique twist on your special day. Amazing venue... the view of the water is stunning and so unique for a wedding venue. The venue itself has all of the little details that made our wedding spectacular- epic view of the water, delicious food (get the chicken), tv screens for slideshows, fancy/ spacious bathrooms, many cute photo spots for guests, beautiful fountains, and a rising dance floor. My guests loved little details like the AC vents right near the dance floor to keep it cool. The staff was attentive and did all the heavy lifting. My sister got married here in July of 2015 and our experience was phenomenal! Justin was her wedding coordinator and he went above and beyond to make sure she had the wedding of her dreams. I was mind blown by how involved he was with everything and how he was genuinely excited for her big day! I was the maid of honor and in order to take some stress away from my sister, Justin made sure that everything went through me. He even went as far as setting up the center pieces himself because the florist we went through was AWFUL and just dropped the flowers off at the door. She was supposed to have rose petals scattered down the pavilion and the flowers that the florist delivered were boxed up and ended up turning brown. Luckily, Justin jazzed up the pavilion so that no one, even my sister, noticed that the rose petals were missing! He made sure that everyone was having a blast during the entire wedding and reception. He even threw in a surprise dessert table that was decorated BEAUTIFULY. It was a perfect place to have our August 2019 wedding, not just for the views, but for everything else. When we arrived for a wedding we were one of the first people there and when I went to use the men's room there was an employee shirtless shaving at the sink. Later at the open bar there was a big container of ice and the bartender was haphazardly dipping glass into the ice without using a scoop. the food tasted good but toward the end of the night number of people we're running to the restrooms not feeling well after dinner something was definitely undercooked it could have been the chicken which we really couldn't tell if it was cooked thoroughly or not. read more

What can I say about the Roostertail. They completely made our reception freaking amazing. From the moment we booked there, I knew I was dealing with a great place and a great sales person, Shawna. The Roostertail had so many nice added bonuses like a variety of linens to use in house (saved lots of money for a great look), chivari chairs, centerpiece options if you want them and obviously, a gorgeous venue. They went above and beyond in every possible way and I can't even say enough about them and Shawna. Shawna let me email and call her so many times well in advance of our wedding with stupid questions and never getting annoyed with me. And that was just leading up to the wedding. The few months before, my communications and visits became more frequent and Shawna (and all the staff) were so helpful. I would go to play around with linens or check out the room and they let me come and go as I pleased. Shawna also let us sample some food at a party they were having so we could decide on the menu. She really helped us decide on things that work well and worked with us on our quirky requests like having just the salads plated and set out so people didnt' have to juggle two plates in the buffet line and getting us our Oberon for the bar. Shawna also allowed for my parents to charge a monthly payment every month until the wedding rather than waiting till the end...which my parents will be forever grateful for. We were able to upgrade just certain liqours as part of our contract, rather than the whole bar, and get appetizers and a late night snack...while staying at the Roostertail revenue minimum for a Saturday night wedding. They allowed us to drop off two car loads full of decor at the site the day before and they hauled it all off for us and locked it away for safe keeping. Talk about service. And this is just before May 9th. May 9th. I hired a DOC to take care of a lot of set-up for the extensive candy buffet and parts of table decor (chair sashes, chargers). Shawna called me at 11AM the morning of the wedding, asking what she could get started on for us since all she wanted to do was help. That made me feel sooo good that she was taking such an active role in our wedding to make it phenomenal. When I walked into the room the day of the wedding, I was in shock and awe. It was more than I could have ever imagined. They set up the linens and the room in such a great way and I later found out, they set up our candy buffet, not our DOC as planned. It was more than I thought it could be. I had about 21 containers of my own, but the Roostertail contributed some and it was the biggest thing of candy I had ever seen. I think I made my little cousins' lives that night. Anyways, the Roostertail also threw in a Signature Martini for us free of charge and our guests loved it. The waiters had trays floating around filled with them and it was such a nice touch that they did not have to do for us, but did. The food was outstanding, everyone loved it and even the chef came out to make sure everything was to our liking. We had White Castles as a midnight snack and I think that was the hit of the night...there were boxes lying around everywhere. An added nice thing that they did for us as we were waiting for the Omni shuttle to come back at the end of the night, the owners drove Steve and I to our hotel so we didn't have to wait. It was so thoughtful! All in the all, the Roostertail made our wedding so fantastic, fun and we felt like celebrities with the way they treated us. It is not a cheap venue, but the quality of service and food is worth every penny. I wish I could start planning another party there! read more

I swear ERICA did not do a good job.. there were so many downs that was suppose to go right and it could of if she was on top on her work but unfortunately we were very disappointed.. The salad was absolutely perfect but the meat was super dry :( then when we were ready to cut the cake there was no silverware and no plate to put the piece of cake we cut to put in.. the pieces of cake to be served for the people was suppose to be in the kitchen was placed by the sweet table, and the pieces of cake was served before we even cut the cake. everything was super unorganized from their side. What a beautiful venue. Attended a wedding reception here over the weekend and absolutely loved it. The location is absolutely wonderful. I especially liked the water fountain show that was occurring outside the window. I would have given a five-star unfortunately the catering staff was not as on top of it as the place. I had a long engagement and searched several other Detroit venues until we found The Roostertail. I'll be honest, we were a little hesitant about it as we ate lunch at Sinbads prior to our appointment with the venue. But, within seconds of walking into the Roostertail we knew immediately this was the place. STUNNING views all around, grand decorations, rising dance floor, and a ceremony location beautifully put outside. Needless to say, we booked! This was all before Covid. Planning for the wedding had its stressful times as Covid presented some unforeseen challenges. The Roostertail was adjusting and adapting by the minute. This meant limited options and a lot of messaging, Zooming, and calling. The last few weeks before our wedding date Bronson and I decided to just give it to the Roostertail and let them do their thing. AND DID THEY!!! We put all of our trust into their recommended food selection of stuffed chicken with boursin cheese and spinach, mashed potatoes with a garlic sauce, green beans and the caesar salad. We never had a food tasting and went unknowingly into our wedding night. Our guests could not stop talking about the food, service, atmosphere, quality, and experience! Several of our guests had previously been to The Roostertail for high school proms or class reunions and had talked very highly of the venue. We knew our night would be magical and full of love with our friends and family. What we did not know was what quality and superior service The Roostertail would give it. Individual tables had personal service and their needs were delivered quickly! Nicole did a very good job as the day of coordinator. She made sure that we were punctual with our timing and we stayed organized to maximize our time with our guests. Last year, John (my now husband) and I met with Nicole to inquire about having our wedding reception at the Roostertail. When people say they know the moment they walk into a venue, it's the place for them, this is exactly how John and I felt. Our daughter's reception was at the Roostertail on June 20th and my wife and I could not have been more pleased! We were thrilled with everything from the setting of the room, the beer station and bar set-up (always important), the staff and the presentation and preparation of the food. Spectacular! The Beef Wellington was prepared beautifully for a group our size and our guests raved about the chicken. The chocolate torte was to die for. Having spent over 30 years myself in the hospitality industry I especially have to comment on the staff. I was very impressed with all of them. Their dress, in their clean and crisp white uniforms and appropriate grooming standards gave a very professional appearance. They all were friendly and very attentive to our guests needs and requests. The young ladies at the door and on the stairwell, greeting our guests, were equally professional and pleasant. ATTENTION BRIDES: This review is for you! I recently had my wedding at the Roostertail. I'm not exactly happy with the outcome, I'm not angry either. Just EH... There are a ton of good qualities that this place has to offer, however, my experience with my wedding coordinator was a disaster. It's quite pricey to host your wedding at the Roostertail and you can only hope that with the price comes exceptional service. Let me first start by listing the wonderful things the Roostertail has to offer, and why a bride-to-be would consider this venue. The Roostertail is a BEAUTIFUL waterfront venue! It has a really cool history of being a premier nightclub where tons of awesome bands performed in the 60s. They have a hydraulic stage and fountains that create a one-of-a-kind backdrop on the dance floor. The food is fantastic, and the bathrooms are even gorgeous! They have a space for an onsite ceremony and the location is great if you want to be near downtown Detroit. Chef Paul is amazing, and the owner is great too! Now as a bride-to-be how can you not get excited about this venue? As a bride who had her wedding here let me tell you how MY wedding went. I booked the venue and was super excited! When you book your wedding here you are assigned a wedding planner/ coordinator who is suppose to help you make your wedding a dream come true. Throughout the year that I spent planning my wedding, they changed my coordinator 3 times on me! So each time I got my new girl, I had to fill them in on my vision. The last time they switched my coordinator on me was a week before the wedding!!! Wtf. Not stressful at all, right? Still I was open minded and thought I was in good hands. But as I learned during that week, my coordinator was very cocky, bossy, and disorganized. She never listened to me to answer questions that I had. I kept asking her for a timeline to give to the dj, photographer, and wedding party so that everyone was aware of how the night would play out. My coordinator kept saying "Don't worry! I will let everyone know what's going on during the day"! Sure enough, the second we got to the Roostertail on the day of the wedding it was CHAOS! My coordinator was no where to be found. We were all confused, and no one knew what was going on. It was pretty much like that the whole night! When we arrived to the Roostertail no one knew where we were supposed to be. She told us to get there by 5, and when we did, no one was there to greet us or direct us. We were thirsty from being outside taking pictures, and no one was around to help. We had to flag people down in the office and demanded that they bring the bridal party some water. We stood around like a bunch of idiots for an hour until our coordinator showed up at 6. That was just the start of it. The ceremony went well, and afterwards, she went to grab us some cocktails (when we really wanted food). After that I BARELY saw her! And you might be thinking.... Well if she's not helping you, maybe she's directing your guests. NOPE!! While we were signing the marriage licenses, our guests were marveling at the food, confused as to whether or not they can eat. We had self-serve stations set up for 2 hours that opened as soon as guests arrived. No one knew they could help themselves. Why not have the DJ announce it? Eventually they figured it out. We also had to flag her down to do the grand entrance, and then again for the first dance. Shouldn't it be the other way around? I'm telling you, we HARDLY EVER saw her. I still don't know what she was doing the whole time. One last thing I need to complain about... She started cleaning up at 10:30! WHY? We had the room until midnight. Don't put my decorations away yet!!! By the way, she also looked a mess. She wore socks with tennis shoes and a dress! She was very rude to my mother, and the bridal party, particularly the groomsmen! She treated them like they were a bunch of idiots. A couple of them were very upset with her. She seemed very angry and stressed out the whole night. Other than my experience with my coordinator, everything else was beautiful!! My guests loved the food, and the ambiance. If you are a bride that plans to get married here, my advice to you is to be very specific with your coordinator. Demand whatever it is you want ahead of time, because YOU are the one paying for the wedding!! Make sure you guys are on the same page, and that she knows EXACTLY what you expect. read more

I'm giving a five star because of the decor, the view and the ambiance. All of them stunning, they really went all out on the decorations and the view was spectacular. The entire room was decorated in shades of blue, white and silver - just georgeous. The owner was there before the event to make sure all was in place and that everyone had a good time. The food however was quite ordinay even though elegantly displayed. The dessert table was also very very pretty and made you want to save room however it was just...ordinary. Now for the bad. First of all the event was December 8th, this is Michigan and they had a mandatory coat check. Why I do not know but it was a very cold evening and it takes a while to get warmed up sometimes. I did not want to check my coat, I did not want to pay $3.00 to check it and I did not want to tip to pick up a coat I did not want to check. The only plausible explanation I can think of is that they didn't want coats hanging on the decorated chairs, but I was annoyed. Now here comes the big one. We were in the Palm Room which is up a flight of about 15 to 20 stairs with a landing in the middle. The stairs are I would say 8-10 feet wide black marble slabs and quite stunning becuase it gives the illusion that they are not there. During the whole event there were 6 or 7 employees standing smack in the middle of the stairs, just standing there waiting for something...I found out what they were waiting for in the most unfortunate fashion. I was decending the stairs to go outside early in the evening (6:00 PM) and didnt use the handrail because I didn't think I needed to. I proceeded down the steps past the landing and missed the next step entirely and fell the rest of the way down, very embarassing indeed. That is when I discovered why the employees were standing there - TO CATCH AND TRY TO PREVENT PEOPLE FROM FALLING! In my embarassment I apologized profusely to the young man who helped me up and he said "Don't worry, it happens all the time!" What??? Within minutes someone came over to take an incident report and they checked on me all evening (even more embarassing to me) they called me the next day to be sure I was okay which I do appreciate but please, Roosertail - fix the dam stairs before someone is seriously injured. read more

Went there for a Mother's Day brunch and the food was awful! Where do I begin? Caesar salad with no Caesar dressing...only Ranch or Italian. The breakfast items were okay. Can't mess up sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs or hash browns. But it was the dinner items which were horrible. Fried Chicken overcooked, carved roast beef so cold and dried out, I could've used it for the bottom of my shoe. My son found a hair in his macaroni and cheese. Catfish and grits on a menu that charges $50.00 per person Pre-paid? Our family meal was $180.00 in advance. I wouldn't have paid $10.00 per person for the slop that was served. Had to find a waitress to fill our water glasses. And to top it off, one beer, a rum and Coke, plus two Sprites to drink cost an additional $21.00. If you like ambience and a view, it is something to behold. But I wouldn't go there to eat. It was absolutely the worst meal my family and I have ever had at any dining establishment. read more

Attended an event here for WSU medical grads and had a great time. The place is right on the water and if you look up from your table, you could very easily be looking at the Ambassador Bridge or the Ren Cen. It really does have quite an enjoyable view. They did a fair job of being timely and not overbearing when it came to waitstaff. Food was some of the better catering jobs I've had and drinks were a bit steep to purchase but we had tickets so the prices didn't really apply. I'll agree with Lisa N. in that this place does very much feel "catered" but few, if any, prom and wedding reception locations manage to dodge that sensation. Simply put, the event seems catered because it is. I can't say squat about the pricing on renting the hall or anything like that because I simply don't know. As such, I can't really determine the value on the good time I had. I can only say that I enjoyed myself here and the staff were very professional. read more

We got married at the RoosterTail over Labor Day weekend and actually hosted two events over two days at the venue. We were extremely happy with the venue and more importantly with Shawna and her team's service. We used both the upstairs and downstairs of the venue indoors as well as the dock area outdoors. Shawna was extremely flexible in the setup across the different locations. While our food was catered from elsewhere, the bar service was smooth and prompt. Despite us having 300 guests in attendance, the venue was able to service all smoothly. The venue itself is beautiful. At night, they put on colorful lights on the outside of venue. They also have water fountains that run through out in the background. Very scenic! The RoosterTail also creates personalized Snapchat filter's for your event for guests to use! We highly recommend using the RoosterTail for your future event. read more

I'm giving the Detroit Roostertail only a three-star rating. Although the Roostertail is very asthetically pleasing, and the food wasn't too bad, I attended (of all things ... get this) a Christmas Party for the Detroit Police Homocide division a couple of years ago. Although I had a wonderful time, when the event was over and valet returned my car, I discovered my wheel covers missing ... off my brand new car. (Too bad all the police officers were inside partying.) The truly baffling part ... my car was parked in viewing distance from the valet attendants, yet no one (not a single attendant) noticed any unscrupulous activity in their parking lot. Even more baffling is that security was patrolling the lot all evening. (Okay, maybe they were actually hitting the bottle all evening.) My only recommendation ... if you have a nice car and plan on attending any events at the Roostertail, I would first suggest renting a hooptie. Unfortunately, I have no plans on returning, particularly after how I was treated by the management staff in an effort to resolve this problem. Needless to say, the management staff was non-empathetic and very unprofessionali in handling this matter. I hope this review served you well. read more

I paid $250.00 a ticket for the hydro plane races, Had a huge pillar in front of me so couldnt even see the race! Food was horrible and had only 1 cook at the buffet so lines were long. Charged $10.00 for mixed drinks in a tiny cup! When we complained they just put us off. worst customer service and we will never be back!!! read more
