I booked a massage and facial online well in advance for my birthday and specifically chose both services on the same day and back to back times. I later received a call saying my massage therapist was no longer available and the appointment needed to be rescheduled. After speaking with someone, they reassigned me to another therapist for the same day and time, which was fine. Shortly after, I received additional messages asking to reschedule my facial and repeatedly suggesting different days and times. The entire reason I booked early was to secure the original date and times, so this was frustrating. When I called to explain that I did not want to reschedule the facial, I also learned that the massage appointment had not been properly updated and that the time was no longer available. Due to the ongoing scheduling issues, excessive communication which was disruptive during a typical workday, and overall disorganization, I canceled both appointments and booked elsewhere. I was disappointed with the lack of organization and excessive communication about two simple appointments. read more

I can't actually speak to the quality of services at Root because I haven't managed to schedule a service there. I live in the neighborhood and was looking for a new massage therapist; Root's website states that they take insurance so I thought I'd reach out and see whether I was covered. Their website also states to email them with any questions, directly on their insurance page, so that's exactly what I did. I emailed them twice (once after not receiving a reply) and finally heard back from someone asking for my insurance information. I sent that in and never heard back. Followed up once, still no response. So I've contacted them four times now and haven't gotten anywhere. They must be full up on clients then. Guess I'll go elsewhere. Dear Root staff: if you're not actually going to bother responding via email, please stop suggesting that potential clients reach out via that medium on your website. read more

I love my naturopathic doctor, Dr. Goncharoff (who has since left Root), but the structure and customer service at Root is the worst I have ever seen. It is impossible to speak to someone on the phone directly, especially for billing. Left messages and no call back. Tried to pay my $20.00 co-pay FOUR times, twice in person (they couldn't look up my account) and twice via phone. The counter staff are a rotating door and each is less trained or knowledgeable than the last. Root does not function as a medical clinic should. A BOT responded to my voicemail! How could you get more impersonal? Also the physical structure of the clinic does not provide privacy and I am sure is a HIPA violation. I was standing in the middle of a juice bar with people all around discussing my personal medications with counter staff?! Terrible, though the manager assures me its been this way for 10 years and had no complaints... hmmm... Save yourself some time, there are lots of good naturopathic clinics in Portland, just don't go here. read more

Robert has been my go-to esthetician for the past year and a half and I followed him to Root Whole Body from another med spa in Portland. I scheduled a facial with him and was advised to come at least 15 minutes early to get a tour of the facilities and get settled. When I arrived on a Sunday afternoon the front desk staff was so helpful and kind and showed me around the space. There's tons of offerings from Root and I also learned that the use of the cedar spa is included in my treatment and can hold up to 6 guests. I opted not to do that this time around and was directed to the locker rooms. Very clean with a large amount of robes of varying sizes and sandals. Lockers have electronic keypads so I didn't have to worry about bringing a key with me everywhere. The waiting room area is incredibly peaceful and there are two types of tea and a carafe of water for guests to help themselves to. Robert got me promptly for my appointment and escorted me to the treatment room. After giving me privacy to dress down to my comfort level, Robert returned and explained each step of the facial. I have done many facials but I must say the products at Root smell the best! Each product had a very fresh smell and ranged from floral to citrus to earthy but nothing smelled artificial. Robert explained all of the products he was layering on to my dry and dehydrated skin and I almost fell asleep when he was doing a facial massage with a Japanese citrus balm and he also did a scalp massage! Absolute heaven and my skin always looks AMAZING after my time with Robert. If you use the Mindbody app to book you can prepay for the service and then ask the front desk to add gratuity. They also can schedule with you directly there or via phone or the app. I also liked that on Sundays parking is free, however the pay to park areas were all for 4 hours in the surrounding area so I don't think finding parking on any other day of the week would be too difficult! Had a great experience at Root Whole Body when I came in for a 60 minute massage. I appreciate how efficient and of quality the experience is. When you come in you first check in at the counter. You're then guided to the locker room, which includes a guided tour of the available benefits and services. Once in the locker room you change into your robe and slippers and then go into a very quiet and relaxing tea room with tea and water. The massage therapist will come get you and take you to the room. What i liked: calm ambiance, heated massage beds, personable employees Things I wish were different: The massage rooms are located near hallways that get traffic, so at times you can hear the conversations of passerby's which can be distracting. For three weeks I have tried to cancel my membership and for three weeks I have been completely ignored. Now I am going to be forced to block my debit card and get a new one (which if you've ever had to do, is an enormous hassle) I really hope this is an issue with poor communication and they are not trying to force people into continuing a membership, but at the moment it really feels like the latter. If you read my previous review, you know what a great massage therapist Katie is. I did deep tissue again for 90 minutes. The last massage was great. This one greater yet. She is dialed in on my Trigger points, like shoulders, hips and knees - but intently worked all over the body. After I showered, I felt like a Stumptown Gumby - "sing dat song, do dah, do dah, work da ROOTY tooty booty." Loose joints! Relaxed! Rejuvenated! So this review, I would like to share that It is not just massage. But the Root experience is great. You'll look good in the creamy robe with flip-flops. I have been seeing Scott for years, and while I get nervous about the secret getting out about how good he is, I always tell people in person how life changing his acupuncture has been for me. I've had chronic upper back pain my whole life, newly acquired intermittent low back pain. When I have a flair Scott can fix it in one, sometimes two sessions, whereas it would be massage a couple times a week for several weeks to get things back to normal. Don't get me wrong, I love my massage and it has its place, but acupuncture with Scott at root has been my most efficient and effective self care routine for years now. The thing today that's prompted me to finally write a public review, is that I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis off and on for a couple years but I didn't know that it was something that could be helped from an acupuncture perspective, so I never asked. But today while doing our normal pre-appointment check-in we got into my foot issues and he offered a couple modalities that we could try. Neither of which would be "comfortable" while being worked on, which is something I'm used to in acupuncture. Almost a "no-pain, no-gain" mentality, but because the work is SO effective in helping relieve my chronic pain I'm all for whatever will help even if the means aren't as pleasant as a relaxation massage. Scott placed maybe only a couple needles in each of my feet and did e-stim on it (which is supposed to help with muscle recovery I gathered from his education), and after that he did some cupping on my plantar fascia, which weren't uncomfortable per-se, but a really intense sensation. Like my naivety when I first tried acupuncture for my back pain years ago, I had low expectations for these two seeming small interventions. The pain I had been dealing with was so deep, achy and intense and had been building, steadily worsening over my more active summer months. I didn't expect much of an immediate improvement, but a few hours out from my appointment and the deep ache in foot joints I didn't ever feel like I could stretch, roll or ice enough myself, have SIGNIFICANTLY lessened. My arches overall have maybe a third or a quarter of the pain they had a few hours ago. Which if I could convey to you how difficult it is to combat this, I would say it is a full on miracle. On my back when this happens after an appointment, I often wake up the next day pain free. So I'm excited to add this to my regular self-care routine. As a bedside, night-shift nurse, with an autoimmune disease I'm often putting my body through the ringer at work, and the recovery work I can do at home just isn't enough to combat all that I'm asking my body to do for me during the work week. Thank you so much to Scott, the Root Staff, and the massage therapists, you all have made a huge difference in my quality of life, my ability to to do my work as a nurse, and enjoy the things I love outside of work. This was the first yoga studio I started off at and how lucky I was to do this. I originally went to their NE location and they've opened this NW location a few years ago. Owners are awesome and spared no expense in what they offer. This not just a yoga studio but also a place for wellness. Step in and you'll feel like you've entered a sanctuary for healing. Yoga studio is great. Quiet. Wonderful instruction. All the props you need. After class check out their tea room. Nice place to chill out. Their sauna is also awesome (and included in your dropin). Shower facilities are great - nice towels, robes, everything you need. And the NW location also has food! I've had juices as well as meals. They are all tasty and healthy, many asian inspired. I was lucky enough to attend a private event here where I was introduced to several of their services like a yoga class, beginning acupuncture and their amazing cafe which focuses on vegan food but does have additional options for those of us meat eaters. I came back for a facial with Kelly and WOW...JUST WOW...Blown away as to the care and also the different nature of this facial. It was more aggressive but in a great way from any previous facial I have had. She specifically targeted my face and its desire to over oil. She used a cayenne face mask which tingled oh so good but wow, the difference. I was glowing after. After sampling their food I really would recommend you make some time when you go here to grab a soak or some sauna time before or after your service, have some tea and grab some snacks to refresh and nourish your body. Honestly, this place is amazing. Really, the whole package for your whole body! To start, when you walk in you'll see the cafe area and the front desk. You can enjoy various appointments in the back with a medical provider, massage therapist, or for facials as well. You can also schedule time in various rooms or stop by for time in the meditation tea room or the dry sauna. They also have yoga classes which you can participate in if you choose with difficulty levels ranging from easy and slow to harder and heart pumping. I received a massage from Aimee and it was divine. They best massage I have ever received! By the end, when she was massaging my head and neck she put me in a trance and I did NOT want to leave, I highly recommend booking with her if you can! My only reason for deducting 1 star is because of price. Yes, it's all amazing but it comes at quite a hefty price. And if you don't make enough money to live in the neighborhood it's located - chances are you won't be able to come regularly. Maybe once a year as a gift or treat yo' self day. I got Covid. And I missed my 30 minute Skype appointment from over sleeping. I'm not worried about the $150 charge that was to my card from missing my appointment from having Covid. I'm super disappointed in the lack of care. I was not emailed back, or asked to reschedule. Nobody from the staff offered to send a note to the doctor for vitamins that could help me with Covid. NOTHING!!! All the staff was able to tell me was sorry about you having Covid we have to protect our staff which is why we have to charge you for missing your appointment. Nobody bothered to help with other options that could assist me during my Covid health scare. Nobody offered to reschedule me. Nobody offered to give me options for healing. I am extremely disappointed. They were so worried about the $150 then the actual health of a patient. I will not be going back. read more

Normally I love Root, and I've been a member for almost a year. But lately it's near impossible to get an appointment nowadays. I'm sitting here, in actual tears because I'm going through a particularly painful pregnancy that's badly affecting my joints and muscle pain, and weeks ago I booked a pre-natal massage which was for the earliest time I could get it. They just called and canceled it day of, due to a family emergency. I have a lot of sympathy for this and obviously it can't be helped, but now I have to wait until July 11th for another appointment because their hours are so wonky. They're only open till 6pm on weekdays making it impossible to get a weekday appointment if you work. Because I have a membership and membership is effectively pre-paying for a monthly massage, I put my well-being budget into Root, so if I can't get an appointment here I can't go elsewhere. Also the woman on the phone was really defensive and not very sympathetic at all which didn't help. My annual membership is coming up for renewal, and I'm sad to say under the current conditions I don't think I can continue. I think these things are really important for anyone considering locking in for an annual membership right now. read more

Where is the zero star option? My girlfriend ordered us each 90-minute massages for my birthday. We are massage junkies and have had tons...way over 100. THIS WAS THE WORST MASSAGE EVER. She never even touched my legs!?! After the massage she called me back into the room to get my feedback. I said, "You never rubbed my legs." She replied, "Yes, sorry we didn't have time for that today. We can start there next time." Not enough time? You had 90 minutes! Every single massage I ever had covered my whole body. The Infrared Sauna has become my new best friend. I go twice a week now. Ahhhhhhhhh! (Have you never done an infrared sauna? Give it a try! It took 4 sessions before my body figured out what was going on and then I *really* sweat like crazy. It was awesome!) Some of the reasons I love this place, besides the Infrared Sauna: - The people that work here are the kindest, most helpful, warm, and welcoming crew! I always feel a little self-conscious at new spa or health facilities. As soon as I walked in, that instantly melted away. -The space is minimal but pretty and feels "warm". The locker room is lovely, the showers get hot, hot, hot, and the team in the tea room is always comforting. - The steam sauna! Some of the reasons my review is 4 stars instead of 5: - The walls between the tea room and some of the treatment rooms are quite thin. While relaxing with my tea, I could hear (through the wall) the conversation a practitioner and their client were having. I could hear it quite clearly. -No hooks in the lockers in the women's lounge/bathroom/shower room. -The robes are light-colored, quite thin and see-through. As this is an all-gender facility, walking around in a clingy, thin robe can be uncomfortable. But that's me. (I'm not a young gal with a tight bod. :-) ) read more

Would have never discovered this place had it not been for a Yelp Elite Event. The space is beautiful. Relaxing, airy, light, everything you want a spa to be. After the event I booked a series of facials on my own to get a better feel for the place. They have a membership that requires you to place a certain amount per month in an account for use at the facility (sort of like a flex account). This allows you a nice discount on services/food offered. I'm still on the fence about the program and have a few more facials left before deciding. As for the facial- with the discount the total comes to $99 for a 75 minute facial. I've had facials throughout the city and this is a pretty sweet deal. As noted, the space is beautiful and my esthetician was lovely. They use Eminence products (which I already use at home and love) and the facial left me with a nice glow. My usual gripe on a facial is there was no foot massage, but I'm beginning to think its just me as foot massages definitely don't seem to be the norm. As for the rest of the facilities, I already have a yoga studio I love and I've tried acupuncture in the past and am not a huge fan. They have a fantastic changing room, a tea room and a dry sauna, but I can't see myself using these facilities much. So far I've been impressed so we'll see if I join. read more

Places like Root Whole Body are a bit out of my wheelhouse. I'm a "let's go do some bench presses and then eat street tacos" kinda guy while Root Whole Body is more "after our yoga practice, we should detox with a juice cleanse" kinda spot. But I've gotta give them credit, Root Whole Body is outstanding at what they do. Any time I end up here I feel healthy, nourished, cared for, and just incredibly calm. Whether you're here for a class, a meal, or a treatment, Root Whole Body is a true 5 star experience. Mostly I'm here for massage, and it's always great. My most recent experience was with Seth, and I was super impressed with his knowledge, intuition, and demeanor. We started with a brief consult, which I think is vastly superior to the "draw on this chart where your body hurts" tactic used by many massage studios. He asked me some questions, expressed a battle plan and dove right in. I loved how tailored the experience was to my needs, focusing on mobility issues in my neck (thanks to a spinal injury) and my sore AF legs (thanks to cycling all weekend before). He still gave my shoulders and back some love, but this was all about getting me what I needed, not just some preprogramed routine. I'm pretty sure that I fell asleep midway through, which I suppose is the ultimate compliment? I walked out of the treatment room feeling like a million bucks. Everything else I've experienced at Root Whole Body has been outstanding, though I'd struggle with providing details. Knowledgeable and inspiring yoga, even for a tight newbie like myself. Delicious food that leaves me feeling good about my choices. A relaxing environment that seems a million miles away from the stresses of my daily life. Creative combinations. A menu that will leave your body feeling good inside and out. Its a fusion of Asian, Californian, South West, Vegetarian, and Keto diets all in one. For drinks, the teas offered make claims of better health, mind, and spirit. They are blended well. Taking a sample of each and enjoying them all. The smoothies and or blends of vegetable and fruit juice are enjoyable and you can feel the goodness go down as you swallow. There is definitely the flavor of each ingredient. Be aware of the main ingredient in each because that is what you are going to get. The soups are delicious and abound with flavor. It is a little bit of Pho and a little bit of extra healthy. You will not be disappointed. The dessert seems to be a daily offering. I have never been disappointed. A great coconut cream mouse with Flax, almonds, and mango was as good as it gets. Worth a stop in just for the food. The services are top notch. A yoga class walked me through breathing and flexibility exercises that helped to strengthen the body and improve my balance. Wow, Root Whole Body - You really have it all. I went for a mid-day Vinyasa class with Karli - I left with a feeling of zen, a soreness all over (Karli - that flow was NO JOKE!) and a smile on my face. I was in town for a trip, and had some free time while my partner was at a meeting, so I found my way to Root. This unexpected urban oasis provided me more relaxation and good vibes in the 90 minutes I was there than I could've imagined. The yoga space - two sizable rooms, bright natural lighting, clean, and equipped with some of the nicest accessories (blocks, straps, blankets, etc). I also borrowed a mat for the day, which was high quality and clean (not always the case when you're matless!) Karli, my instructor, took her time with the practice, made gentle adjustments, and challenged the class with some poses I'd never tried, even after years of yoga! The community sauna - Well, let's first add the complimentary robes so you don't have to go in your post-class clothes. The sauna was so clean, so comfortable. Smelled like fresh cut wood somehow, and the dry heat was complimented nicely with a little splash of water on the hot stones for steam. Post-sauna shower - WOW this shower was huge! I'm a 6'2" lady so I'm not used to having so much ROOM to shower! It was glorious. I also sat back and had a cuppa tea in the relaxation room before I left. This review is based on paid visits I've had with Zoe Norman, a relatively recent and phenomenal addition to the massage therapist staff. Zoe is intuitive and knows her fascia like no other LMT I've ever worked with. I had 2 90 minute deep tissue visits within a few weeks and we're now doing specialized work on my neck in 30 minute sessions.
