They have a limited number of "set" menu items, and they let you make custom creations, too. This is where I reveal how lame I am, because I found my favorite order back in 2023 and I've never changed it up! If you see me here I'm probably ordering a Mayweather salad, which includes kale, bulgur, sweet potatoes, beets, red onions, goat cheese, and chicken. One day I might shake things up and try their cobb salad...but until then, I'll let the Mayweather continue to delight my tastebuds. The bowls are fairly healthy, and it's easy to add modifications (I like the el jefe bowl with "the works" & added chickpeas). There is rarely ever a line, and the people preparing the bowls move very quickly. The iced tea is really good too (my favorite is the dragonfruit green tea)! The ambiance is nothing special, but that fits with the "healthy fast food option" purpose of the establishment. The lack of actual servers prevents me from calling this a true restaurant, but it's a good option if you need something quick, healthy, & filling. Yum! This is a great place to grab a quick, fresh lunch. I ordered the pesto caesar salad which is a unique combination but it worked well. The food is good for a fast-casual store of place and the restaurant itself was clean and has a good variety of seating. You can customize your bowl with various ingredients or order (and customize, if you want!) one-of their bowls. Lots of people were doing pick-up orders so this is a great option for that. read more

Been to Roots several times and absolutely love it. I can not believe I forgot to write a review for it. I would consider Roots to be basically a fast food resturaunt. By that I mean you can get in and out very fast. They work on the Chipotle module where you go down a line and fill your bowl with the items you choose once done they serve it to you. I had the spinach and kale salad with cucumbers, tomato, beets, carrots & chicken and dressing. The staff are friendly and very helpful in the process. The salad is delicious and super healthy unlike going to Mcdonalds or BK. I will definetly keep going back for more as the place is great. If you have not been to Roots you must go. There was a bit of a line in the late afternoon but the employees got people through in record time and the wait wasn't too bad at all--frankly I'm just glad they're having lots of patrons during Covid! Plant friendly and just yummy! Since this was my first time in, I decided to try The Southern, an item with the ingredients selected for you to create a tasty bowl. Since I was omitting the feta cheese the nice woman working told me I could substitute another ingredient for it. She recommended sweet potato, so I did just that. The bowl was so delicious, fresh, and felt truly like a good CLEAN meal! I enjoyed every bite. I also loved the tahini lemon dressing my ingredients were mixed in. I'm obsessed with this restaurant! I apologize I forgot the name of the salads that I got with the attached photos in both of my two visits. I ordered the preselected ingredients salads but made adjustments such as feta instead of blue cheese etc. The ordering process is comparable to subway if you are making your own, if you order preselected it seems easier and just advise of any substitutes. Their salads range $9-12 which is reasonable for the large portion, extremely fresh ingredients!!!, and quality of food. These are some of the best and satisfying salads I ever had that leave you feeling pleasant and not bloated even if you eat the whole thing. They are really efficient here (line goes quick) and clean! Their teas are really fresh as well and seem truly natural. Awesome addition to the East Liberty food scene! I'm a regular at the Oakland location but now Pittsburgh is blessed with two Roots!! This location is definitely the trendier of the two. They even have an outdoor seating area which will be great in the summer! I placed a take out order on opening day and my food was ready when I got there, though not warm at all. I did have a 4 hour wait on the Roots app, which I imagine is because they were doing a free bowl special for their grand opening. It's the perfect place if you're looking for a healthy option. The miso tofu is delicious and the portions are large enough for two meals. They have a great selection of toppings as well, including several hot, grilled items and multiple vegetarian protein options in addition to their tofu. Street parking is readily available. All in all, 5/5 star experience, minus the wait and cold food, which I'm sure is partially attributable to the higher volume of orders on opening day. read more

Tried the new Ponzu bowl and the Southern at the new location. Great ambiance and nice and clean. We ordered to go and they had a dedicated spot to pick up orders, just need the last three digits from your order number. The Ponzu bowl was pretty good, the chicken was just a little dry. And then I had a brilliant idea that I would build my own bowl - because it's the same price - and I could make it almost the exact same as the pre-made but sub the slivered almonds and pickled jalapenos for pickled onions and something else that now I can't remember haha. Okay, first off, the bowl was huge! I'm not being dramatic. They gave like 2.5 scoops of rice. And then they were generous with the toppings, and the tofu as well! The red chili miso tofu is literally the best tofu I've ever had from a restaurant. So, for $13, you get two meals worth of food with super high quality ingredients. Like wow I'm obsessed. I am hooked on this place! I ordered it twice before on GrubHub and just went in the restaurant for the first time the other day. I like ordering on GrubHub because you can just click all of the boxes for toppings that you want. These bowls are so huge! The price does add up quickly as you keep adding toppings. The BBQ tofu and roasted mushrooms are really delicious and flavorful. Love that they have good veg options! I do wish they had a salmon or tuna option though. I really love the tahini dressing and basil pesto dressing. Sometimes I'm not sure how it will mix with the bbq tofu, but so far the dressings have been light and complement the flavors well. I like to order a mix of kale and bulgar, with most of the veggies (especially the roasted beets, sweet potatoes, and broccoli), goat cheese, bbq tofu, and mushrooms. When I went to the restaurant, I was a little overwhelmed by the menu and wasn't sure where to order and if I told them all my toppings at once or not. I've enjoyed food stuffs from Roots Natural Kitchen on several occasions and have been thusly pleased on each of them. The bowls are responsible, quite filling and include only the freshest ingredients. Due to the rampant inflation of the past 2-3 years, they are also expensive and I cannot afford to eat here as much as I would like. The staff was really nice and helpful explaining the options and that you can pick one and add or change an item or build your own. I just picked one of the suggested Pesto Caesar with sriracha. Very tasty. The lime pickled onion was very nice flavor to go along with some of the bulgur wheat and pita chips crunchiness.
