This was my first visit. That's worth saying up front because Rosa Mia has been around for a very long time. There are people in Johnston who have been eating this pizza for most of their lives. They don't just know what it tastes like. They know what it's supposed to taste like. I had none of that. No childhood stake in this one. No fourty year memory to argue with. Just a thick, square pie and an open mind. The first surprise was the crust. This is a substantial pizza, but it didn't eat that way. The top and bottom had real crunch, crisp and golden brown, buttery, with the bottom almost looking like it had been fried in oil. Then you get through that shell and everything changes. Soft. Chewy. Light and airy. Delicious. That contrast was the best thing about the pizza. The cheese was harder to figure out. It never really browned, even around the edges where the crust was getting dark, and the flavor wasn't quite mozzarella. Sharper. Fuller. If I had to guess, I'd say there's some provolone working in there, blended in rather than announced. I could be completely wrong. Whatever it is, the cheese tasted like something. That's not as common as it should be from a lot of pizzerias. Then there was the sauce. On this particular pie, there just wasn't much there. Thin. Almost apologetic. Salt was the only note that really came through. I didn't get much tomato. I didn't get much herb. Nothing really pushed back against a crust and cheese that were doing most of the work. And that's where Rosa Mia and I probably part ways a little. Plenty of people talk about this as some of the best pizza in Rhode Island. After eating it, I understand why. That crust is excellent. The cheese is distinctive. If those are the things you care about most, this is a genuinely good pizza and absolutely worth trying. But I'm a crust-and-sauce guy. I need both. Maybe that's also the difference between discovering a pizza and growing up with one. If Rosa Mia had been down the street from my house when I was ten, maybe this is the pizza I'd spend the rest of my life defending. I understand how that happens. This is exactly the kind of neighborhood pizza that gets wired into people that way. But I didn't grow up with Rosa Mia. I got to meet it at 59, with no memories attached and nothing to judge except the pizza in front of me. Great crust. Really interesting cheese. A sauce, at least this time, that didn't give me enough. Really good pizza. And close enough to great that I understand why somebody else might have spent fifty years insisting that it is. read more

As a person that absolutely loves pizza, I have an appreciation for all forms of a pizza creator's craft. Thin, thick, crispy, round, square, something, nothing, it's all so good when it is made fresh and with quality ingredients! Rosa Mia, I enjoyed! A thicker crust, similar to Twins, but with more integrity in the crust. They offer a nice crisp to accompany the doughy interior. I'm talking 2 slice carb coma! I don't mind that at all. The Alfredo pie was among the best I've had for sure. I do prefer the medium pies as they offer a really nice blend of crunch and dough. The only real downfall at all is the price. You're going to spend a bit, but having said that you can't eat as much in one sitting. Like you are getting multiple meals in one buy...sooo bon appetite! read more

Rosa Mia has lost some of its shine over the years. For instance, while they have always used canned olives and mushrooms (since at least the 70s), the core pizza toppings are not what they used to be. The cheese is now the same pre-grated stuff that most of the other pizza joints in the state use. As such it is full of anti-clumping agents, this affects taste, especially when reheating. It also imbues a bit of bitterness after reheating. I remember when all the pizza places used to have small but thick hand cut pepperoni on their pizza. In the searing hot oven, it'd curl up and caramelize on the edges like bacon. Now like most other pizza restaurants, Rosa Mia is using pre-sliced pepperoni that is more akin to salami. It's disappointing, but I still give them 4 stars, and I get the same salty, cranky treatment from the owner that everyone else here complains about. He's a feature, not defect. That said, what remains unique (apart from the crusty owner) is the crusty pizza crust. It ain't a NY slice, if you want that, go to dominoes or, Papa Gino's or any of the other hipster Pizza boutiques that are springing up all over (or go back to NY). Admittedly, Rosa Mia is HEAVY and an acquired taste. Though not Chicago thick, it's among the thickest you'll have. It's also comedically greasy, crunchy and more than just a doughy vessel for the ingredients. It is I think, unique to Rhode Island as I have had pizza all over the US and have never seen it made like Rosa Mia (and only one other place in RI). Rosa Mia is unique and still pretty good, though i wish they'd try to offer better ingredients. Some Pizza to steer clear of for the literally 1% of you who are truly celiacs are the gluten free offerings, I had one family member who said it was good, but I know they were being gracious, it looks terrible. Also, their Pizza Margherita just aint. It's Rosa Mia's interpretation and it's just disappointing, especially if you've had traditional neopolitan margherita. Rosa mia does not use san marzano or even roma tomatoes, nor fresh basil or fresh mozzarella. Instead they use large tasteless sliced tomatoes that you'd find in American super-markets, what looks to be a pesto spread and ordinary slicing mozzarella. They do have great crispy fried eggplant pizza, as well as excellent white pizza (think Focaccia). Also try the smelts which are hard to get in many restaurants as well as Snail Salad (which I am not interested in, but am told its good). The real surprise at Rosa mia though, and this is bizarre, is that they have maybe the best Fish and Chips in the area. It's expensive at 20 bucks an order, but it's a big slab of what seems to be fresh fish, light and flaky in a nice crunchy batter with decent fries. My boyfriend ordered chicken soup for me cause I'm not feeling well. He and I were very disappointed by the quality and almost non existing chicken & vegetables in the soup. The rice was way over done, the soup seems to have been around for a few days. For $13.00 dollars I was expecting a lot more chicken and vegetables or at least something of more substance. Found a long white hair in our french fries, To upgrade from a regular marinara to vodka sauce cost $5, The marinara was 100x better than the vodka sauce. The vodka sauce taste like a cheap rip off of ragu which you can buy in the stores for like $3 a jar. The bbq that came with the french fries was awful lol and that cost $1.50 extra. I would never reccomend this place or come back go to tavolo if you want vodka sauce they actaully know what their doing. We are Rhode Islanders transplanted in Kentucky. When we are back in RI we always have pizza. Rosa Mia is our local family's favorite. I'd say it had a tasty sauce, great cheese and good toppings. Rosa Mia, a take out extension of a restaurant called Silvios, is quite honestly one of the best hidden jewels for the most delicious pizza. Rosa Mia's is definitely my favorite pizza in Rhode Island! It is a thicker crust and it is so delicious! My go to is a large cheese, pepperoni and mushroom pizza. The large is a rectangular shape and it is cut into 12 huge squares. The mushrooms are fresh, which is a HUGE deal to me. Canned mushrooms are a big NO NO, so this makes me happy! The prices are pretty reasonable since you are getting the freshest of ingredients. The staff is usually quite friendly although I have gotten the cranky older gentleman that others have spoken of. Overall, if you are looking for delicious quality, and you like a thicker crust, then try their pizza out. They also have delicious calzones and sandwiches. As a native Long Islander I have a really hard time with Pizza in Rhode Island. This is so far the best pizza I've ever had in RI. A friend of ours took us to Silvia's which is the same owner and the restaurant next door where you can also get this pizza.
