Everything looks so good in the case it is really hard not to order just one thing. We came in h for the hot pizza, but had to order the spinach pie with pepperoni and olives. The spinach pie was so good that I will have to order one ever I drive by! The black olives are better than any I've ever had. The spinach is soft and tender, packed with flavor and the pepperoni just sends it home! The pizza was also very good. The crust is very airy with no char, it holds firm with all of those toppings. The crust is thin with a little char. The sauce, cheese and toppings are phenomenal. It is actually better reheated because the crust gets foldable. Palmieri's is still a classic Italian bakery (in fact, to many in RI it is THE classic) and there is usually a line of customers there on a Saturday afternoon. The folks in line are generally friendly, as are the servers, but as for the inexperienced customers it can be (and often is) rather chaotic, which accounts for the 4 star rating. They sell prepared Italian delicacies, including veal dishes, sausages, broccoli rabe, and other yummy foods. But the holy grail is their pizza, which includes some of the best pizza strips (aka bakery pizza) around. For the uninitiated, RI pizza strips consist of fairly thick crust (but not super thick) with a very addictive, slightly spicy and very homemade tomato sauce, with a little bit of oil, slathered on top of the crust. Certainly no cheese (some places have a very light sprinkle of parmesan, but not Palmieri's). The pizza strips, which in the old days were sold for less than $0.25 each, now are less than $3 each for fairly large strips. Word to the wise: buy more than one. They are highly addictive! Also, they might ask if you want corner pieces (a bit more crispy, with a slight bit of char) or middle strips. If you're taking the strips home, you might want to go with middle strips, with plenty of the sauce on them, as corner pieces are quicker to become dry--those are the ones to snack on while driving! They also have homemade lobster tail pastries (sfogliattele), biscotti, cannoli, etc. All quite good. In fact, their brownies are better than I had remembered... Finally, they also have slices of "gourmet" NY-style pizzas, with mozzarella and different other toppings, but usually very fresh sliced garlic on top. Slightly higher price, but also addictive! Now that I live in MA, I will order a box of the pizza strips, usually cut into smaller strips, at events where neighborhood kids are in full attendance. I assure everyone that the dozens of pizza strips (cheaper in smaller sizes, and larger quantities) disappear long before the hotdogs and hamburgers brought by others!! read more

I can only comment on my order. Was in the area and wanted pizza strips so this place had good ratings, and I fell for the fake reviews on yelp once again. Should have known when the strips were kept "in the back", out of sight that they'd be old. But there wasn't much counter space, and I was stupid, so I ordered two sight unseen, and also got a bag of red wine biscuits. The strips had to be 2-3 days old. Dried up. Too difficult to even bite a piece off, like cardboard that had gotten wet then dried out, the sauce was like pure tomato paste, too sour. Really hack. I threw them away and the girl who served me didn't even ask why. The wine biscuits were like 80% sugar, threw them away later too. Once again, I was duped by the fake reviews on Yelp. Shame on all of you!! Must be employees, family, or a paid service posting. BUT I DON'T APPRECIATE IT!!!! I've seen the rude defensive and unapologetic replies by the alleged owner, that should have been a warning sign. Low quality all around. D. Palmieri's is a fantastic Italian bakery located in Johnston, Rhode Island. It sells breads, pastries, pizzas, and sandwiches for takeout. I was in town for business meetings. I live in Texas, but am from Utica, NY--so my visit to D. Palmieri's was steeped in as much nostalgia as hunger. I ordered the Italian Sub on a hard loaf with the works, plus a few add ons. A huge, crusty, house-baked Italian loaf packed with an obscene quantity of Italian deli meats, sharp provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red peppers, red onions, and pepperoncini. Let me tell you...this sandwich was enormous. No exaggeration, I had to peck away at it because I could not open my mouth wide enough to take a proper bite. I am a big eater and could only finish half. Order the small, not the large. But don't take any of this as a criticism. That sandwich was meaty, well-balanced, and absolutely delicious. I would fly back to Rhode Island for another bite. I also ordered a box of Pizza Slices. This is a regional term for a Sicilian-style, focaccia-like pie topped with a savory, slightly sweet tomato sauce and no cheese. The pie is baked in a rectangular pan until the edges caramelize and char. It is then cut into rectangular pieces and served at room temperature. Utica, NY has a very similar product with a slightly sweeter sauce called "Tomato Pie." I grew up on Tomato Pie. Tomato Pie is the first and last thing I eat when visiting Utica, and is probably my favorite food in the world. D. Palmieri's Pizza Slices are right up there with my beloved Utica Tomato Pie. I ate almost the entire box by myself. Johnston, RI isn't exactly a tourist destination, but if you find yourself there do not pass up a carry-out lunch from D. Palmieri's Bakery. read more

D. Palmieri's quality, service and consistency have earned it's place as a staple of the community. Their Italian bread is great. It has a classic, strong, crunchy crust with a great flavor. My only criticism would be that in the last few years, the crumb seems to have gotten a bit more "whipped" with smaller cells and a less chewy elastic bite, reaching towards cotton candy and not bread. Still, it's among the better Italian bread options in RI, and if you want a good loaf of Italian, D. Palmieri's will deliver. They also have a great selection of pastry. Try to get there early when things are fresh. Sometimes the cannoli and sfogliatelle can be a bit soft from sitting out too long. 40 stale pizza strips. I asked for what people say is called the "wet box" with no ends extra saucy. I felt super creepy ordering it. I got a box of stale strips. No one likes a dry box. I ordered them for Christmas Eve along with a calzone. The Italian calzone was pretty good but the pizza strips got completely wasted. This rating is only for the pistachio muffin. I do enjoy their pizza strips and a few other items. I didn't enjoy their pistachio muffin. I thought it would be great, seeing how much I love the pizza and some pastries. This muffin didn't taste anything like a pistachio. You could smell the almond scent as soon as you got it to your nose. The nuts that were inside weren't even pistachios they were walnuts. When I did it was unpleasant and rushed. Told the woman it was my first time and what would she recommend or what was popular ? Was told "I don't know." I had not stopped here since their old building was lost to a fire some years ago. The new building is very attractive, with nicer landscaping than many residences! It's just as inviting inside, with enough space for a few tables for those customers who can't wait to dig in. Actually, they're like three places in one: a bakery (both bread and pastries); a deli, with sandwiches made to order; and a pizzeria, with slices ready to go - so they offer plenty of choices under one roof. Although I had packed a lunch on Friday, I decided to stop here anyway, since I had a just finished a job nearby, and it was lunch time. I bought a slice of "old-fashioned" New-York style pizza. It's similar to an old-school bakery staple, the humble pizza strip, in that it's served unheated, and is mostly crust and tomato, with no melted mozzarella cheese, but rather, some sprinkles of parmesan cheese and garlic. It was cut in a triangle slice, with thinner crust. Of course, I couldn't resist getting a banana cream square, since I have a sweet tooth. Then, I saw they had muffins, so I added three muffins to my order (corn, blueberry and pistachio), figuring that would cover breakfast tomorrow. Then, I knew I had to get out of there, fast, lest I be tempted to add more items than I had cash on hand. Service was fast and friendly, even though it was moderately busy. I even got to witness some local color, as I overheard a customer wearing a track suit embellished with the Italian flag, talking with another customer about boxing, I believe (I'm pretty sure the track suit guy wasn't Vinny Pazienza, although he reminded me of him). I didn't realize they have two parking areas, so I parked my work truck in the square-shaped parking lot on the right, and had to do something like a five-point turn to leave. Next time, I will park on the left side of the building, so I won't get boxed in. Anyway, with my package of goodies in hand, I felt as excited as a teen on prom night as I prepared to eat my lunch. Pizza strips from some bakeries give me heartburn, but this cold pizza slice was pure delight. The tomato sauce (more like paste) had a sweetness to it, which I prefer when it comes to tomato sauce, accompanied by a zest from the garlic and cheese. I liked the thinner crust better than the doughy crust of most pizza strips. I ate this slice very slowly, because I didn't want the experience to end! For dessert, I thoroughly enjoyed my banana cream square, which consisted of two layers of chopped-up banana bread, with banana cream in between, and a drizzle of frosting. This had to be the most flavorful banana bread I've ever had - most banana bread tends to be bland, but not D. Palmieri's. It might have been the high point of my entire Friday. The muffins, which I ate the next morning, were equally good, and held together well, which I appreciated since I ate them while driving, and they didn't make too much of a mess in my truck.
