The Banff Rose and Crown has the best rooftop patio I've ever sipped a beer on. It's completely surrounded by mountains in every direction. The food's okay here and the service is typically good, even when it gets busy. Their barstaff are pros and know how to pour some good beverages. I couldn't agree more with Cait M. in that the R & C in Banff deserves 5 stars. I was here a few weeks ago and I had a FANTASTIC time. The location is ideal - helloooo, it's IN Banff people! - and the drinks, snacks and food are delicious. The staff is extremely friendly and what I love most about this place is the vibe. Headed to the Rose & Crown after a day of geocaching around the Banff town site. Shared a delicious plate of nachos and drinks with friends. Thoughts of avoiding the place may cross your mind if your legs are killing you after a day on the hill; The stairs to get up to the pub may discourage you - do it anyway - the food, drinks, and fun atmosphere will dull the pain in no time! Every time I come to Banff, I end up at the Rose, late night, for a few night-cap Caesars and the band's last set. Having played there for years I kind of feel at home in the grubby, dark, interior. I also love the roof-top patio, on a nice day, it feels like there could be no better place on Earth to enjoy an afternoon beer in the sun. Okay, I'd be lying if I said everything was perfect. Maybe it's just me, but the food seems to have declined somewhat over the last couple of years. Menu options are limited, dated and unspectacular, especially in a town that has so much great food to offer. I thought I'd play it safe and have the burger this time around, having been less than impressed on recent trips with the curry bowl, and 'toad in the hole' (stay away from this one!) The burger was burnt and dry, the fries were profoundly average. My friend had the poutine and the gravy reminded me of the Simpson's lunch room lady ... "it's just brown and water." Since you're paying Banff prices, you kind of expect a little more... but then I had another beer and looked at the mountains and thought, 'well, it could be worse.' read more

This place is huge, old and dark. There is a rooftop however it was too cold to eat up there so we settled into a long table and ordered what turned out to be huge portions of everything. You can order 1 or 2 pieces of the fish and chips which should have been the first clue. It was tasty but the batter was super greasy - a very generous side of fries and plenty of tartar. Mum got the French Onion Soup and it was cheese-er-riffic! The sister-in-law got the nacho plate that was easily a full meal for 3. The boys split a cheese pizza and the brother-in-law enjoyed a hearty steak sandwich. There is a good amount of stairs so go easy on the beers. The only drawback is you can smell the soap factory next door. read more

Okay we didn't come here expecting fantastic food. To be perfectly honest England is not exactly known for their culinary repertoire, and English pubs in general tend to have a very specific feel about them. But we came in because something was calling for us to do so. I think it was the mac and cheese. Calling me specifically. So we go in and find the most delightful waitress. Great second story booth seating looking right over the main road is a plus. My husband took this opportunity to try poutine for the first time, and you know what they did a pretty good job with it. Not to mention he also just had to try their "Buffaloaf"because who can read that on a menu and not order it? I got my mac and cheese which was everything I hoped for. And we had some good beer as one does at an English pub. Overall it's a pretty fun mix of Canadian and English styles and we enjoyed our lunch there. I am sure it's a totally different experience going for dinner and drinks or for a club night out, but just for a pub lunch it was pretty alright. read more

Rose & Crown is a fun place with a friendly atmosphere. They are two sides to this place that could easily be described as 2 separate floors. One side holds a dance floor and a stage that was being worked by a local band and they had everyone going. The other side is more laid back atmosphere where you can play pool and just chat. At 4pm in downtown Banff, the options for a good meal are limited. The nice restaurants are setting up for dinner service, the sandwich shops are too grab-a-bite-to-go, and it's too bloody cold for a picnic. So we head off to the pub. I'm going to keep this simple. The elk stew. Four stars for the elk stew. Not only is it a great Banff-esque dish in concept, but it's delicious in execution. My colleagues had fish n' chips, which looked (and reportedly tasted) rather disappointing. So once again: elk stew. On to the bad: I know it's days before Hallowe'en, and I can get behind some cheesy decorations in a pub. But do you seriously have to smear fake blood all over the windows directly in my line of view as I'm eating?! This young woman had a bucket of blood, and was cheerfully stamping handprints on the windows, oblivious to the effect that may have on diners (especially ones eating a meaty elk stew). Um... gross. Two stars for foresight. Last quibble is the total lack of local or craft beers. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I don't want to drink a Guinness (as much as I love it) at a pub in Banff. First of all, appreciated the great friendly service. This place fits the bill for edible pub food, and has some decent salads as well. Beer selection is lacking compared to other pubs in the area, but they have enough on hand to get you started for the evening. Was very disappointed with the chicken wings... They were absolutely scrawny for $14, a bit overcooked, and their "suicide" sauce which I hoped would be the hottest sauce imaginable, didn't even cause a single bead of sweat to emerge upon my brow. Best Service in Banff My partner and I went to the rose and crown several weeks ago and shared the 2 piece fish and chips and it was amazing, we went back about a week ago and the waiter remembered us and our order! would have given 5 starts but we went here twice on our stay in Banff (from 6/15-6/20) and the first time service was excellent. Second time - not so much. The only saving grace the second time was that we got to sit on the most amazing rooftop drinking beers. First trip we sat inside. I had the chicken wrap and my husband had some sandwich I cannot remember with mashed potatoes. Beer list is decent. Waitress was very attentive and it wasn't too busy when we got there but started to get busy as we sat. Second trip was Sunday the 19th. Rooftop was packed because the sun was finally out. Service was slow, slow, ..... s l o w....the people sitting next to us gave us their menus because I think we were there for about 15-20 minutes before we were even notices. My husband had the chicken wrap I had half casar salad with a side of those amazing mashed potatatos.... I recommend this place anyways. Most restaurants try to up-sell, add things to your order. I was ordering the 2 piece fish & chips and my server suggested I just order one piece, and could always add on the second if I wanted. I ordered the Elk Stew. My wife went for the Pacific Salmon dish. both were excellent and portions weren't small by any means! We sat on the patio and the scene was very nice. Great place. read more

Is it the best food you are ever going to have? Absolutely not but the insane views and the friendly service make it worthy of 4 stars in my book. Our server, Ellie (from the UK, I think), was super fun and bubbly and made it a memorable dining experience. On a nice, sunny day I don't think the deck views can be beat in all of downtown Banff. The fish tacos with a few Banff Ave Brewing beers was the perfect dinner. The tacos were a 7/10 - good but not great. The tortilla was a bit dry and overall they were not super flavorful. We also came here for just drinks on a Monday night and were surprised by how lively it actually was for a Monday night. The live music, some stand alone country guy, was great and the atmosphere was fun. Until we encountered the bouncer who was...to put it nicely...incredibly rude. He seemed to hate his job and is the reason I can't give this place 5 stars. If I could, I would give this place two separate reviews: one for the dinner we had on Sunday night (5 stars) and one for the nightlife we experienced on Monday night (4). In short, I would definitely come back here for a meal on the deck again but the experience with the crass, power-hungry bouncer made me not want to come back here for their nightlife. read more

I have been to the Rose and Crown many times. Everytime I go to Banff I always spend and end my nights at the Rose and Crown. The reason being is that the Staff is friendly and entertaining. There has been a live band every single time I have been there, I think the claim is they have live music 364 days of the year at the Rose and Crown. The music has always been very easy on the ears when I went and the dance floor is usually filled by the end of the night. The drink options are plentiful and always crisp cold. I have never ordered food there but I go for the live music and grooving. read more

You have to get the french onion soup here! The pastry on top will make you never want to cheat on their french onion soup ever again. Great place to watch a game and there is a fireplace you can have a beer next to. Skip the dining area and hang out at the bar section with your friends. Rose and Crown is another "must visit" for my husband and me when we are in Banff. We love the live music and the fact that we recognize the songs that are being played. Last night we were there, the band did a fantastic set of 90s tunes. It was a great place for us to end the night and despite it being only the two of us, we had a fantastic time. The place was busy, but our server was attentive and quick to refill drinks when they were empty. It's not fancy, it's dark, but it's not a dive by any means. Classic pub with bands every night and lots of people having lots of fun. The fish and chips is better than anything I've found in London, and the house made tartar is to die for. Wife had the Shepherds Pie, and apart from being huge, too big for a single serving, and as travelers we couldn't take the leftovers with. Hate to waste food.
