Okay wow..... and I mean WOW!!! Do I dare say this is..... yes this is THE best Reuben sandwhich I have had in Portland. The bread was soft and felt maybe a bit steams? But still held really well but there was so much meat, sauce and goodness that it kept falling out of the bread lol. Nonetheless every bite tasted better than the last and it perfectly filled me up. This is the type of dive bar I can see myself coming to once a month to have this epic cheat meal. I got the pub salad on the side but I think next time I will opt for the tots. Rose & Thistle is a dive bar with pretty good food! Small bar in the front with video lottery. Order food at the bar and take a number. They have tables in the next room and a decent size outdoor space in the back. I tried the scotch egg a while back. It was good, but being my first scotch egg ever - I have nothing to compare. The Cobb salad I got this time was well constructed and exceeded my expectations! Mac and cheese with chicken was good, but nothing to rave about. Prices are moderate. read more

Dive bars are not my thing... BUT, this is a great spot and there's a reason it is a Portland staple. I've only been here a few times but they'll do you right with proper drinks and food. It's been awhile since we were here - tonight partner and I just threw up our hands and discovered that neither of us wanted to cook or, actually get cleaned up to go out. So we ordered fish and chips for pick up at the Rose and Thistle. Ready when partner arrived, piping hot and obviously cooked to order. Went for two of the three pieces of fish plus fries plus slaw. The fries were crisp and lightly brown, the fish was perfectly coated and flaky. Partner is a catsup guy- I favor tartar sauce- theirs is delicious and you get an ample serving. Slaw was slaw, just fine. As happens when hungry, we obviously over-ordered but who wants to argue about a great next day lunch. So, it's a bar, a nice neighborhood relaxed bar. I am sure that they have other great food items, bar has ample choices, comfortable seats, nice neighborhood crowd. And the people who run the place are also pleasant, helpful and generally pretty chill. So, it's one of those never mentioned when favorite foodie places lists are published joints. The women's restroom door is held open by a string/rope and the men's across the way , not . I love this dive bar! It was fun to poke around the main dining room and the patio. The patio had fun tucked away booths. The veggie quesadillas tasted amazing! They were seasoned perfectly and had small zucchini slices in them, among other veggies. I am coming back for them soon! The service was quick! This is a laid back pub, with (good) pub food. There's an outdoor patio out back which is wonderful. There is a laid back vibe here, go up to the bar, make an order. Don't expect table service, or white napkins (unless paper counts). The inside is dark wood, and has a real "old vibe", along with past mementos, stickers, and.. dust. I came here once just to get some water and cool down, RIGHT as they opened, and the bartender was really friendly (but not overly falsely friendly) and perfect. Love the outdoor patio! It must be one of Portland's best kept secrets because I lived in the neighborhood for 18 years and had no idea!!! Figured this was your typical dark English style pub, which it is in the first 2-3 rooms you enter. Keep walking! At the back wall there are stairs, head up and out into the light! A cozy little oasis in the City awaits. There are several different areas on various levels, some with sun, some covered, providing private space for groups or those here just doing their own thing. Waiter was super friendly and efficient. The best! Made us feel so welcomed. Huge kudos for letting our group do individual checks. Was here with a Meetup, and since no one knows each other, it's challenging to do a split check. Rose & Thistle accommodated without even the slightest hesitation. Haven't tried the food since we had dinner down the street prior, but their cocktails, beer and cider all hit the spot. It's been eight years, so it's time to update my review. We're in the midst of the COVID pandemic, so it's worthwhile for that reason as well. After being closed (like every other bar and restaurant) for a time, the RaT has reopened with a view to accommodating COVID precautions. There's drastically reduced occupancy, and social distancing is strongly enforced. There are signs everywhere telling you that while you are unmasked while eating and drinking, when you get up to move around you must mask up, covering both "your mouth and your snout!". This "and your snout" stipulation is much appreciated, since many idiots treat masks like some sort or talisman. Like if you just have it in your pocket or something you'll be protected. Socially distanced seating on the back deck is the thing to do. They've got new hours too, which you should observe since they may change. Closed (for now) in the early days of the week and open in the latter days and over the weekend. Same wonderful staff I've known for some 16 or years. Marty, the proprietor, is making it work the best he can under the circumstances. You should give them your business. They're a Portland institution and they deserve your unrequited love. read more

Definitely the service could improve. My experience there was cut very short because the service that we got was full of attitude the female bar tender that took our order was very rude and sassy with us. We ordered a shot and paid for fries but left before we received our fries because of how badly we were treated. We went on the 21st of December and yes it was close to closing but they told us the kitchen was closing so we picked something quickly that was still able to be cooked in the time given to respect the kitchen staff leaving. Never felt more compelled to leave a review than after reading the person's review from an hour prior to this one. Oh how misinformed and wrong you are my darling... The bartender in question is one of the most kind and authentic humans you could ask for. He handles the ebbs and flows of big crowds coming through on a random Wednesday night with grace and made sure every patron felt seen and cared for. Further, if you're scared of someone who is so obviously NOT interested in the anatomy you have in your lady pants, I don't know how to help you. This reeks of homophobia and maybe you should have been more scared of the hoard of lesbians who also use that bathroom than the gay man who popped in during a lull to check his hair (which, you are correct, it looks fantastic!) Granted, none of us want you so you realistically don't have to fear us either. We're in there to pee, not trouble ourselves with the likes of your hateful self. The women's restroom here, yes, has the main door is propped open, which I appreciate so I don't get smacked with a door while waiting my turn for the LARGE CLOSED DOOR bathroom stall that cannot be seen without fully entering the women's room. There are also folx that do seek refuge in public bathrooms to use dr*gs and this, in fact, is a helpful security measure to make sure ALL patrons are treated with empathy, kindness, and safety. Outside of the large enclosed bathroom stall, it is a small space with basically enough room for the person washing their hands at the sink and checking the mirror before exiting. It's frankly safer to have that door propped open for when lines do form as there is only a single stall. The reason they aren't genderless bathrooms is probably because people like you would lose their minds seeing an open urinal being used in their space (which the men's room has). If you have an extreme bias, this is not the bar for you, though perhaps you'll come here and find a new beautiful perspective outside your biased bubble. If you want a space that is welcoming, kind, and where you can feel free to exist as your authentic self while you nom on some delicious food and drinks poured by someone who couldn't care less about what bathroom you use, welcome! read more

The staff is always very friendly and helpful and the regulars are fun to hang out with. Would highly recommend this for hanging out with friends or just a casual meal. Don't let the word "RAT" turn ya away... it took me a second to realize that Rose & Thistle = RAT abbreviated. Oh, me... My aunt recommended I go here for a bomb-ass burger, and it took me a few years to actually finally drop in with the BF. RAT is currently offering patio service (drinks and food -- order at the bar, then table drop), so we came here on a rainy weekend afternoon. The interior is painted dark like any other dive bar, yet the bartenders were quite friendly and welcoming as soon as we walked in (Just saying, nice bartenders at dive bars are not always a give-in). We got some brews and ordered a small caesar salad and buffalo wings to get started. The patio is pretty huge, and I love the staggered layout. Some of it's covered, some not. There are heaters and flatscreens all around which is quite nice for entertainment if your date is quiet. We enjoyed our reasonably-priced beers and service the most. I liked the salad, but the BF thought it didn't have much flavor (I obviously disagree). He also said the wings were too large (like steroid-y), and it made him lose his appetite after eating them. Usually he's not the picky one, but he was tonight, so I never got to try that burger! I would be down to come back though. read more
