    Barleywine

You can't come to Portland and not come to the Horse Brass, it's an institution. They're celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. We stopped in because they had a bunch of great barleywine on tap in conjunction with an event they do. We ordered up some barleywine and some food. Halibut chowder, warm Brie and tres leche cake. The food was delicious (that cake! ) and our server was fantastic, 5 star service.

What an iconic bar a must stop in Portland !! Also they are celebrating their 50th year !!! We stopped in because they had some killer barleywines we wanted to try . We ended up ordering food as well and I got the warm Brie with roasted garlic and apples - so good and a perfect portion size .

The food was amazing - fish and chips huge and delicious - sausage roll - great sauces chips atmosphere beer - all great !!! Our waitress IDK ticket said Annie D - she acted like she didn't give a shi$ - like don't work at a restaurant with great food and beer if you're gonna be a wanker.

Met family here for lunch on a Sunday around noon. There were 7 people in our party. We were a little worried about coming in with a group on the weekend because they don't take reservations, but we had no problem finding seating to accommodate our group. Service was friendly, helpful, and attentive. They have an extensive beer, wine and spirits menu. Their food menu has a nice variety of pub fare. Our group chose a variety of food, including pot pies, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, bangers and mash, fish and chips, and sausages. Everyone enjoyed their food. Portions were decent, but we thought prices were a little high for some items. The price of the halibut fish and chips has gone up since we were here 3 years ago, but they've removed a piece of fish, and the fish portions are much smaller. The starters were pretty high priced for what you get. Each one was hardly enough to share. Overall a decent outing, but not sure we'll be back because of the higher prices with less food.

Portland institution and one of, if not the best, fish and chips around. This place can get very busy, but I've not ever been here and not been able to find a seat. Service is incredible here, they really have their sections down, and the gentleman working our table last evening by the front door--we thought he was teleporting around, he was so on top everything. Thanks, friend! The food is the real star here, what a treat, every dish. We went with our usual fish and chips and a fish sandwich--are these portions getting bigger when every other place seems to be getting smaller? Perfectly battered and fried.

Excellent service. Delicious food and wonderful ambiance. Was so happy to enjoy a wonderful lunch with a coworker.

Scotch egg. A meal by itself.

Great service, great food, and an awesome ambiance. What more do you want in a pub? Try the scotch egg, the steak and mushroom pie, and anything else on the menu.

What else does one do on St. Patrick`s day if they don't go to an Irish pub and drink the night away. We were bar hopping with friends and made this our last stop for the night - the premises is big and very aptly decorated. Surprisingly they weren't very full either and we got a nice cozy booth to hang out . The staff was cheerful and in High spirits . We got a few drinks and a few nibbles -overall I would say it was a fun experience . Was it any different than any other generic pubs in the city ? probably not ! So for me if you are in the area it could be a good spot to hang out but not worth making a drive to .

This is a great place to go with groups. The lighting is very low and the ambience is of in English pub. There are a few specialty items on the menu that are English like Scotch egg, bangers, and mash, fish and chips. Tonight I had the chicken pot pie, which was delicious. It came with housemaid potato chips. The pot pie was very good, but it was more than I could eat. I also had a side order of a banger just because. Who are they celebrating a friend's birthday who was from England. So I had to ask how comparable it was to a real English pub. He says they got the flavor of the pub, but it was like a Disneyland version. He said it wasn't like the pubs he visited at home . All in all it was a good trip. Food was good, company was good. I will definitely go back again.

The Brass is always a solid spot for fish & chips and a good beer(s). The staff is always pleasant and it is always a lively environment, doesn't matter the time of day...

An English pub with vibes. Cool decorations with dart boards. We only came for the cocktails. We ordered the spicy watermelon margarita during the Portland Highball week. It was delicious. The server was attentive. It smelled delicious and was packed for a Saturday!

It is genuinely cozy in a way that's hard to fake The reading rooms are such a great touch. Having tucked away spaces lined with books to actually sit and read, talk, or hang out in is so rare in a bar setting. It makes it feel more like a community space than just another tap house. At the same time, it works really well for large groups, we've rolled in deep before and never had an issue finding room to spread out. The beer selection is excellent. Thoughtful and rotating enough to keep things interesting without being overwhelming. Whether you want something hoppy, something dark, or something easy drinking, they've got you. And the left wing vibe is the cherry on top. It's refreshing to spend time in a space that wears its politics on its sleeve, pro-labor, pro-community, unapologetically itself. It feels like a place built for the people who actually live in the neighborhood.

Outstanding! This space suits so many purposes: studying, catching up over a drink, planning/researching, etc. There's even a conference room with seating for 11 that you can reserve. You can play board games here if no one's home is big enough for your group (their website says they no longer book the conference room for board games, but you can game there if it's not reserved). There's a few games in the upstairs green room closet. On a Sunday afternoon, there were plenty of spots open, but it is not dead either. Theres a variety of seating to suit all body types and preferences. First floor is wheelchair accessible. The upstairs bathroom has ducks on the ceiling so that's worth a visit alone. The blueberry rooibos iced tea is delicious and you add your own sweetener at the drink station. It literally feels like hanging out at a friend's house. Worth popping in if you haven't been. You can check the current drink selection on their website. You order in the entryway and then carry your items to your seat. Bus your dishes back to the entryway when you leave.

You can absolutely smell the fish and vinegar as soon as you walk through the door, which I think gives the place a very homey pub feel. I ordered a spiked peach Arnold Palmer, which I enjoyed (and it was pleasantly strong) and a glass of the house white, which was good for the price. Our server was very fast and attentive. To eat I got the tomato soup with a grilled cheese, which was absolutely fantastic. The soup was so creamy and flavorful, and I cannot imagine a better meal after spending all day walking outside in the rain. The fries were super crispy and I liked the batter. My partner and I shared some of their breadsticks, which were deliciously baked (fresh!) and came with a super refreshing basil crema and a nice tomato-y dip. Wonderful all. My partner ordered fish and chips, and was surprised to find that it is one large fillet of fish, not multiple pieces like you would typically expect. He said the fish was fine, but a little tough. Overall, a wonderful experience. I definitely hope to return. I highly recommend this place as a refuge during the cold winter months!
