We stopped by Horse Brass Pub on St. Patrick's Day, and wow, was this place packed - but they had a system in place to get you seated fairly quickly. The atmosphere was electric, everyone was in great spirits, and it felt like exactly where you wanted to be for the holiday! Our waitress was super nice, really made sure we were satisfied and checked on our table multiple times. Much appreciated. The bratwurst topped with caramelized onions was my favorite and it paired perfectly with one of their many beer selections. I would totally stop here again next year for st patty's day! read more

Best fish and chips in all the land. The pieces of halibut used to be bigger and then it was really the best fish and chips in all the land, but it's still pretty good. The french fries are off the hook. We have a Sweet waitress there who's very Portland with a charming personality and lots of tattoos. Met family here for lunch on a Sunday around noon. There were 7 people in our party. We were a little worried about coming in with a group on the weekend because they don't take reservations, but we had no problem finding seating to accommodate our group. Service was friendly, helpful, and attentive. They have an extensive beer, wine and spirits menu. Their food menu has a nice variety of pub fare. Our group chose a variety of food, including pot pies, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, bangers and mash, fish and chips, and sausages. Everyone enjoyed their food. Portions were decent, but we thought prices were a little high for some items. The price of the halibut fish and chips has gone up since we were here 3 years ago, but they've removed a piece of fish, and the fish portions are much smaller. The starters were pretty high priced for what you get. Each one was hardly enough to share. Overall a decent outing, but not sure we'll be back because of the higher prices with less food. read more

I really love coming to Horse Brass Pub. I don't partake in alcohol so I go solely for their fish and chips! The restaurant itself is cozy (in that traditional English pub kind of way). There's plenty of seating, too. I highly recommend the Halibut Fish & Chips. It comes with the fish, fries and slaw, however, I always sub the slaw with their potato salad (it's way better than the slaw). Their portions are very generous, too! We were seated quickly in the bustling restaurant, but took a while to get served. The drinks were good, albeit a bit pricey for drafts. The food, alas, was dry and tasteless. We ordered a scotch egg. So dry and hard you could pound a nail. I had fish and chips. The fish looked great, thick and flaky. Yet, no flavor. My son had a sandwich that seemed lacking in everything. There are a few specialty items on the menu that are English like Scotch egg, bangers, and mash, fish and chips. Tonight I had the chicken pot pie, which was delicious. I've been going to the Horse Brass about once a year for decades. I am British and Scandinavian and love the authenticity of HB. Remembering how great the fish and chips are, I talked friends into going with me despite the distance from their homes and work. Seven of us had dinner. I explained to the server that I am a supertaster and most don't drink beer, but I do. That having extra tastebuds and really wanted to have a beer with my fish and chips. I asked if I could have one swallow of a beer or two hoping to find one I could drink. She brought what was likely 2 ounces of two beers that she chose. I told her that I know I cannot drink one of them. Neither worked so I ordered a ginger ale. Despite her choosing the beers, seeing I could not drink them, telling her that I know I cannot drink one, she charged me $1 for each of them. She might have realized that I should not be charged for a beer she chose and that I could not drink. She might have not charged me for beers I could not drink, esp given that I bought an expensive dinner. I'm posting this here because I go out all the time and have never once been charged to taste a beer. Restaurants pay little for draft beer. I asked for one swallow and told her she brought too much. Living with extra tastebuds can be a challenge when eating out. Other businesses have always helped me find something I could drink in several states over several decades. It is my hope that Horse Brass will be more accommodating and generous with supertasters in the future. I do not plan to return. The fish was great. The chips cold. The taplist was extensive and diverse. The Sam Smith's Stout was very tasty and delicious. We're there mainly for food so we got their Three-Piece Fish & Chips and Chicken Pot Pie. Slaw was also nice and fresh with a kick from the horseradish. Overall, this dish was stellar for the price. Eventhough everything was fried and salted, it wasn't too overwhelming or heavy! Had a little Holiday Lunch here with the wife last week. She had never been to this S.E. Portland legend before. Place was busy but not packed. Dark as usual, but that adds to the ambience of the "Olde Pub" feel. Looked like a single server was working our area, but she seemed very efficient. Orders were taken and delivered promptly. We both ordered the haddock fish and chips ($17.95 each) which seemed reasonable. But when the orders arrived...they were HUGE. It was a single large, like half the fish sized battered haddock chunk!! It was delicious. Hot and crispy, moist fish, so good. Chips were hot and crispy as well. Their homemade tarter sauce is perfect. Drizzled a little vinegar and HP sauce on the chips and they were PERFECT. Washed mine down with a Smithwicks, delightful. Both of us only ate half of our orders, took home the rest for fish taco's that night for dinner. Next time we might spring for the Halibut Fish for $27.95 and split the order.
