It was my first time at Rose Tree Cottage. What a welcoming friendly and excellent spot for Tea Party! I am so glad I decided to celebrate Valentine's Day and my birthday there. We parked easily in the street. There is a small parking available at the back of the cottage too. They told us to arrive twenty minutes earlier than our appointment. We were greeted by Edmund once he opened the door. He told us to take a tour around. They have a gift shop. You can purchase many delicious British snacks from them. Photos are not allowed inside but you can take some pictures outside only. Sir. Edmund accompanied each guest to her seat. It is a vintage tea place with homey and cozy vibes. Shoutout to Edmund, Mary,and Janette. We had several courses. It was as follows: -Elderflower drink with strawberry and raspberry, potato chips, quail egg,and grapes. -Tea -Yorkshire Pudding(beef, chicken, shrimp &Lobster, cheese & tomato). Mary came with a tray to choose from twice. I chose shrimp & Lobster and cheese & tomato. They were savory, flavorful, airy, and perfectly delicious. The best Yorkshire Pudding I have ever tried. -Classic smoked salmon sandwiches with Champagne. - Heart shaped scone with strawberry, rich clotted cream, and jam. Their scone was delicate and flaky. - A decadent Chocolate like cup filled with layers of cake and whipped cream, then topped with fresh and sweet raspberry. My goodness! This dessert was really indulgent, and luxurious. - A tray of macarons, short bread cookies, sticky toffee pudding.I chose sticky toffee pudding because it looked perfect. My instinct was right. It was moist, rich, covered with caramel like sauce and really comforting. - Turkish Delight ( choice between one piece of lemon or rose). I chose the rose one. It was nice In addition to,endless refill of tea, milk, elderflower, and champagne. Janette was very sweet. She took our pictures outside too. Mary and Edmund put a candle in my dessert. Edmund told everyone to congratulate me for my birthday. He also gave me one of the largest Meyer aromatic lemon as a birthday present from his garden. It was so sweet of him. I've heard about this place for years. I love afternoon tea. After returning from London, I was yearning for more tea so I booked. It's not like other tea experiences that is for sure. You are not going to find tiered platters of food. Instead the food comes out course by course along with high service. Of the many courses the scones and the hot savories were the stars of the show for us. The elderberry lemonade was also a nice surprise. There were many courses, we were very full by the time we were done. They do a great job of refilling your cup too. The tea which is their own blend was just okay for me but the treats delicious. I was first introduced to Rose Tree Cottage last summer when a friend brought me there for a surprise birthday present. It was amazing! The ambience is totally, delightfully British. Edmund and Mary are wonderful hosts - skilled at making each person feel welcome. The gift shop is fabulous to browse. But, don't trip over HRH Bob (the resident cat). What can I say about the tea? First, don't eat any breakfast. And you probably won't eat any dinner that night either. The high tea is more than substantial. Multiple courses brought out one at a time, each one perfectly presented and wonderfully tasteful. If you haven't had clotted cream and jam on warm homemade scones, you haven't yet lived. In the spring I took one friend there for her birthday and just recently a second friend. Each visit was as absolutely delightful as the one before. Rose Cottage Tea House feels like stepping into someone's lovingly room tended garden -- and that's probably because Edmand, our host, actually loves his garden and it shows. His service was warm, attentive, and full of little personal touches that made the visit memorable. He likes to share A LOT of stories. There are a few quirky house rules to note -- no photos allowed inside and no traditional tiered trays for the tea service, which may surprise some expecting a classic presentation. The fingers sandwiches are only two slices so the price point is extremely high. A very nice lady walks and makes her round filling your tea cup or offering sweets. But the food comes out beautifully and everything tasted fresh and homemade - so do want to support this establishment. There is a gift shop adjacent to the tea room full of British biscuits and knick knacks. ;) Overall, a delightful experience that's a bit different from your typical high tea, thanks to Edmand's hospitality and the enchanting garden atmosphere. read more

My friend took me here for my birthday and it was so fun to get dressed up (we found cute fascinators to wear!) and from the moment we walked up, the entire area is covered in old British memorabilia and the staff is INCREDIBLE. So friendly and attentive, and the real star of the show is Edmond! What a sweet gentleman who made sure my birthday was so special. The tea and food were absolutely DELICIOUS (my favorite was the first savory pastry pie - the beef one is incredible, the fruit and dark chocolate cup is perfect, and the sticky toffee pudding is to die for). I don't want to give too many little surprises away but we truly felt like such special princesses our entire time here. Rose Tree Cottage is truly a gem in Pasadena. I have passed by it many times on my way to old town Pasadena and finally got to step inside and try their afternoon tea with my friends. Immediately stepping in, I feel like I have traveled outside of LA and stepped into a quaint cozy British home with lots of beautiful knick knacks - every corner is filled with fun things to look at and lots of cool things for sale - including Barbour jackets, vintage blazers, teacups, saucers, and British snacks. My favorite part about the whole experience is meeting the owners, Edmund and Mary. They are so passionate about keeping the tradition and their fun personality makes this an even more memorable and attentive experience. There is so much thought and detail put into each course from the carefully brewed tea to the most warm and delicious scones that makes me want to come back for more. They also make the yummiest warm sticky toffee pudding that I still think about. Experiencing this makes me want to bring everyone I know here so they can all experience the warm hospitality and delicious food. I thought I wasn't going to be full after this, but was pleasantly surprised to find myself happily stuffed by the end of the afternoon tea. We had their Christmas tea and upon arrival we were greeted by Edmund, one of the owners, and my new best friend. He let us know that there would be no use of our cell phones inside. While on one hand, I was sad I couldn't take any pictures of our experience or tasty food, I did feel fully connected with my wonderful friends as we enjoyed this experience! The interior was delightfully decorated and each party was seated one by one by Edmund. Tea was poured continually by the kind servers throughout the service and the meal was delivered in portions. That part I enjoyed very much, so there wasn't any large towers blocking our view. We all had a delightful time! You may be turned away by having to call or the price tag, but it's 100% worth it! Yesterday I had the pleasure of having afternoon tea with my sister and a friend. Having afternoon tea here is a whole delightful experience. Beginning with calling to make the reservation, you will likely speak with the husband and wife team who have run the place for 50 years! There's a dress code -no shorts for women, men need a jacket and tie. They are preparing you for tea In the royal palace. The house setting makes you feel like you're in someone's grandmothers' living room. We started with Sparking Elderberry. I could drink this every day! English tea, fruit, followed by several savory food options. I enjoyed the Beef Wellington and Coronation Chicken the most. The finger sandwiches were ok. All of the sweets were good and I was impressed by one that came as a chocolate cup filled with cream and berries, finished with a sauce on top. All around great tea experience. My husband and I have bought tea, jam and a wool scarf from here in the past several years and never had a complaint until today. I bought a box of Taylor's tea, a small box of another tea, strawberry jam, 2 samples teas and 2 Cadbury candy bars. When I got home I noticed the candy bars were both expired. One said expired in 2021 and the other 2023. I also noticed on my receipt that I was charged double the price for the one packet tea samples. I called the next day and spoke with the gentleman owner and told him what happened and he was nice on the phone, said to come in and he would refund my money. So I went in today and first no one answered the door. I called and he came to open the door. I told him I had called about the expired candy and he grabbed it out of my hand and threw it on the counter. Didn't even look at it. I guess he knows he's selling expired food. When I told him I was returning the candy and the 2 samples I was over charged for he grabbed the $11 from the register and threw it at me and said give me your receipt. The owners of this place is a couple from England. Have gone there twice to buy scones and elderflower bottles. Each time they have been rude and condescending. I was introduced to this place by a Caucasian person which was treated very different than me. The owners are snotty towards minorities. We drive by this place all the time and have always been curious. When my daughter's 18th birthday rolled around we decided to give it a try (she's a budding pastry chef and wanted to try the scones). We were so thoroughly charmed by the whole experience. The food was amazing and even though the individual portions are modest they brought out course after course. By the end of our leisurely time there I was absolutely stuffed. I loved that phones were not allowed. It was also fun to dress up a bit (jackets and ties for the men). The service was above and beyond. I came to Rose Tree Cottage specifically to pick up their Sticky Toffee Pudding. It is one of my boyfriend's top favorite desserts, we first tried it at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant in Las Vegas. It's a common dessert in the UK but it has been so hard to find some in LA. So to find this lovely establishment has been such a huge jackpot! I was so excited to surprise my boyfriend with this on his birthday. The cake itself is quite small. I was going to buy 2 for a party of 8 but the lady suggested that 1 cake can serve up to 15, because of how rich and decadent it is. And she was right! It's incredibly indulgent, a small bite of it is more than enough, but it was just what I was looking for! It comes frozen, and I threw it in the oven at 350F for 20 min, added vanilla ice cream, and it came out sooo good. All of the other foods I couldn't name were also all delicious. The building was packed with all things British that you can purchase if you'd like - elaborate tea party hats, British tea sets, British clothing, and all sorts of things. There were even some classic British snacks that I overheard other guests (who were speaking with British accents) marveling about the snacks and saying "Oh I haven't had this in ages!" I remembered saving Rose Tree Cottage in my Yelp bookmarks years ago, and called in to make a reservation. Please note the information on their website is a bit dated. Details for booking: Afternoon tea as of March 2024 is available only on Saturday or Sundays at 1:00 pm. You must call exactly one week in advance at 10:00 am to make an appointment. I was advised they fill up quickly so I called exactly on the dot to make the appointment. If you have dietary restrictions (vegetarian), you must make them known at this time. They do not accommodate for vegans. I mentioned this was to celebrate a birthday, and I was told it would be a 3-course afternoon tea experience at $85 per person and they only accept cash or check payment. (Post tax and tip would be around $200/+ for a party of two). I was told their dress code was smart with no jeans or shorts allowed. The food (skip to be surprised, read if you have different dietary needs): From memory, we were first served a plate of salt & vinegar chips with green grapes, with a non-alcoholic sweet white wine (?) topped with a paper umbrella and berries. We were also served refillable English tea with the option of adding milk and sugar cubes. Then, we had the option of choosing two Yorkshire puddings (I had two cheese & tomatoes for the vegetarian option), and my friend chose two different meat forward options (coronation chicken & beef Wellington) that she thoroughly enjoyed. The outside of Rose Tree cottage had a nice garden that was decorated with a mini Oscar statue, old stagecoach (?), and a King Charles cutout. We were greeted by Edmond, who escorted us inside and seated us individually, and served by Mary and their staff. Edmond, Mary, and their staff were friendly and dressed in very cottage-core attire, which blended into how the inside was decorated (lots of pink, floral, and British memorabilia). As they have served government officials and other British public figures, we were told that we were not allowed to take photos inside, but they definitely noticed our disappointment and helped us get plenty of photos for us out on the lawn. On call, I had let Mary know that I wanted the bill to go to me and not my friend as it was for her birthday, so she helped me sneak away while we were in between dessert. Mary and Edmond were incredibly charming, witty, and hilarious, so despite being a huge introvert who felt a bit out of place in terms of dining etiquette and a bit clumsy in their small space, I was made to feel welcome the entire time. I am aware that there were quite a few recent negative reviews that I missed while doing my research on Rose Tree Cottage as I mostly used the information from their website and Google reviews to inform my friend's birthday planning. While we did not personally experience unwelcoming service nor did Edmond, Mary, and the staff talk politics with us (aside from our photo-time with the King Charles cutout), that does not mean that their experiences are any less valid. This might be because we were both late and were just trying to take the experience in, so aside from when we were being served, we were mostly left to ourselves (which was our preference). I am searching for the best afternoon tea spot in SoCal and enjoyed visiting Rose Tree Cottage. I did have a bit of trouble reserving a spot because the first time I called, the cell reception was quite bad (I couldn't tell if it was on my end or their end) and the person I spoke to said they would call me back the next day, but they didn't. Then I called again 2 days later to confirm that my reservation had been taken and they confirmed it, and then said the owners would call me back about directions to the location, but again, they never did. Because they didn't, the owner stopped my husband at the door and said he had to wear a suit jacket but I had not been told that (also did not see this on the website) & the owner insisted that we had been told. That's a pretty interesting thing to insist on. I told him that they were supposed to call us back but never did and then he was apologetic about it & got a suit jacket for my husband to wear while he had our afternoon tea. I can see why other reviews commented on the owners being "rude" but I think this might just be a difference of culture/attitude. Either way, it was frustrating how it wasn't easy to reserve. Interestingly it took a while for all of the guests to be seated for afternoon tea, which might be so that guests look around the gift/food shop beforehand. The house is very cute, albeit feels very cluttered and needs some work. I think the decor would benefit greatly from removing like 5-10 things from every quadrant of each room. I felt like I would easily knock stuff over on accident and I did see 2 other guests accidentally walk by things and knock stuff over. I also thought it was concerning that the toilet is leaking and they put a vase to catch the water dripping out of it... It's nice that the owners run a nonprofit that sends aid to somewhere in Africa (I think Kenya) and the tea table had a letter written by one of the kids saying thank you to them. International aid is an interesting and complex topic - I got the impression that they had sent a lot of Beatrix Potter books for kids to read. In our current age, I would love to know what kind of aid they send now. There are little cards asking for donations but it isn't heavily pushed thankfully. They ask that folks don't use their phones while there and there are no pictures allowed. It was pretty funny to me that I would see folks sneaking their phones under the table, the way you'd see high schoolers trying to use their phones in school. I can see the pros and cons of a policy like this but personally didn't like it - I often enjoy having afternoon tea while reading a book on my phone so this shop would definitely be out for that. For the first course we were served grapes and chips, with elderflower lemonade which was nice. I didn't love that we were served chips (the same that are sold in the store) but it was fine. The grapes and elderflower lemonade were nice. The service during the tea was also much nicer. After this, they brought around trays of Yorkshire pudding (which were all delicious) and some classic tea sandwiches. The scones were EXCELLENT! There's only one tea that everyone is served but I enjoyed it. They specially source and blend their own tea. I didn't really care for the chocolate dessert - it tasted to me like they had used cool whip for the inside. Overall it was fine, I don't plan to come back to this location for afternoon tea given the hassle but enjoyed most of the food and the tea. Had a wonderful afternoon tea with hosts Edmund and Mary this past Sunday. Our party of 5 gathered in the foyer before Edmund escorted us to our wonderful corner table. Janet promptly assisted in moving the tables and chairs to allow easy access for the grand dames of our party. A bit of elderflower bubbly(non-alcoholic) started the party going along with green grapes and crisps. Fine china dazzled our table along with all the fun things to look at in the parlor room. Janet filled our teacups with tea all snuggled in a cozy, decaf was an option as well. Then the bites started, Mary came out with a lovely silver platter filled with sandwiches and quiches. Salmon and cucumber sandwich with a side of asparagus was our first bite followed by an array of quiches: beef Wellington, seafood, curry chicken and Welsh rarebit(cheese and tomatoes). Traditional currant scones and strawberries served with clotted cream and strawberry preserve. Then dessert time a wonderful chocolate cup trifle with fresh berries and creme followed by sticky toffee pudding or macarons ending with Turkish delight. It was so nice not having tray towers, our party was able to enjoy each others company with unimpeded views. Edmund chatted it up with all the guests and Janet made sure our cups and dishes were always filled. Edmund and Mary shared images of their children in Kenya and how their school is thriving. Wow. Just, wow. This is not your typical tea house. This is an old school, Downton Abbey, classic, God Save the King, rather formal tea house. It's in one of the original, large houses that sits to the west of Huntington Memorial Hospital. The tea is served on Saturdays and Sundays, at 1:00pm and 4:00pm. You need to telephone or stop by to make a reservation. They also have a shop that is open M-Sat from 10:00am to 6:00pm, and from 12-noon to 5:00pm on Sundays. In the shop you'll all kinds of everything, all imported from England. They've got ladies and gentlemen's jackets that range from $85.00 up to over $450.00, all of which are on a Royal Warrant from The Crown. Umbrellas that could probably be used as a weapon. Books, magazines, teas, cookies, candies, double creams, clotted creams, scones, sticky toffee pudding, hot cross buns, and honestly, I could go on for a couple of paragraphs just on what is for sale in the shop. The tea service. This is not a place where you show up in jeans and a sweatshirt, get a cup of tea and a scone, and you're out in 30-minutes. Not in the least. They don't mess around, as this is the Real McCoy (or should I say the Real Windsor). Men are required to wear a collared shirt, tie, and jacket. Ladies are required to wear a dress or skirt. Cameras are absolutely forbidden inside the establishment, and they are serious about it. While we were looking around in the gift shop prior to being seated, someone pulled out her phone, and the hostess quickly, sternly, yet politely told her to put the phone away. Tea was served by the owner, Edmund, a British gentleman, and a really sweet lady who's name I sadly did not get. You start with some fresh fruit, crisps, an elderberry drink, and their own House Blend of tea. That tea was amazing, and yes, we bought a big bag to take home. Then you get a choice of two savories, each served in a Yorksire pudding: Roast beef/Wellington, Welsh Rarebit, Coronation Chicken, a shrimp and lobster combination, or Toad in the Hole. We each had the Wellington, and then I had the Rarebit, while my daughter had the Coronation Chicken. Good God Almighty that was good. Then came the smoked salmon and cucumber finger sandwiches. Then came the amazing freshly made scones, with clotted cream and jam. Then came a white cake, covered in clotted cream, topped with fresh berries, served in an edible chocolate cup. Then came a small slice of sticky toffee pudding, and a macaroon, and a shortbread cookie. Then came what I'm guessing was a palate cleanser - a lemon flavored piece of chewy gummy candy. Everything they serve is either made on site, or imported for England. It was a bit pricy, at $85.00 per person, plus the tip. You're paying for some amazing food, incredible service, in a fantastic setting. It was, in my opinion, absolutely and totally worth every penny. Sir Edmund, we will be back. read more

Tea at Rose Tree Cottage is a dream. As soon as you sit there is a refreshing drink at your seat along with vinegar malt potato chips which are absolutely addicting. Grapes are also on the plate which balance the salty crunch with juicy sweetness. Everyone is dressed well befitting the atmosphere. The walls are covered with old pictures, lots of Queen Elizabeth and King Charles as well as other members of the royal family. Wandering through the rooms brings more charming novelties, including a hanging sculpture made by children from the Kenyan school sponsored by Rose Tree Cottage. The china, glasses and tea cups on the table all match or coordinate. The first course consisted of a choice of Yorkshire puddings - Welsh rarebit, beef Wellington and a seafood mixture. Everyone was wonderful, my favorite was the cheesy Welsh rarebit. Next we were served sandwiches with salmon and cucumbers, followed by scones. We were directed by the owner, Edmund, to first apply the jam, then the clotted cream. He knows how to work a room. He stops by each table to converse with guests, makes a joke or comment, answers any questions or remarks then moves on. The service is timed to allow digestion of all the food. Dessert was a dark chocolate cup, filled with the richest whipped cream and topped with fresh berries. It looked and tasted glorious. After we admired all the jams, scones, shortbread and more for sale. Delightful! read more

I took my 81 year old mother for tea here last weekend to celebrate her birthday and all I can say is..... it was a memory she will NEVER forget!! She hasn't stopped talking about it! :) We both had the most amazing time!! The ambiance, food and SERVICE are like nothing you have experienced in a very long time! In fact, that is the beauty of the experience.... it is like traveling back in time to a beautiful, English estate and garden that provides perfect etiquette, homemade delicious food, and every detail of an authentic British tea! My mom was treated like a queen and escorted into the dining room first by the lovely host, Edmund. Janet was our server and she could not be any more attentive, friendly and interesting. Sweet Mary came around later with her savory homemade Yorkshire puddings, yummy tea sandwiches, delicious scones and incredible desserts. The chocolate cup with whipped cream, sponge cake and berries on top was wonderful! But that wasn't all.....it was followed by another round of short bread cookie with strawberry and an out of this world sticky pudding! It was all delicious and we did our best to finish each course, but thankfully could take home what was left to enjoy later! The entire experience was unforgettable and we want to sincerely thank Edmund and Mary for providing this fantastic tea experience to people for over 50 years! They are truly the most amazing couple!! Not only do they get up each morning at 4 am to begin preparing food, serve tea EVERY weekend to guests, but they also sponsor multiple children in Africa- building schools and providing a better way of life for the children and their families. Edmund and Mary are TRUE humanitarians and live a life of complete service to others! I decided to try Rose Tree Cottage another try! And we did get in and had a wonderful experience! Perfect for holiday, birthday or any special occasion! The service is excellent. The meal is pre-determined. I know they can adjust for vegetarianism, but I am not sure about veganism, gluten free and other food sensitivities. Overall experience is wonderful! read more

The quaint dining room leads to a large back patio and the decor is all on theme. I grew up coming to this special place and it was quite fitting to bring mom back to celebrate her 75th birthday. It was the most special of occasions and she quite literally got the royal treatment! The attention to detail and the respect for tradition is what makes this experience so authentic & memorable. To begin, there needs to be a disclaimer that there is a standard pre-fixe menu and a fixed price, PER PERSON. You cannot split whatsoever, so be prepared to pay top dollar and then be enticed to buy other items in the gift shop inside. Edmund who greeted us outside was very friendly and took to my family member immediately. He was chivalrous and kind to her and to me as well. Once inside, it was quaint, tight with knick-knacks, and doilies, but elegant/campy at the same time. It was the perfect space for a cottage-like tea room. We had called in a reservation and arrived on time, but even with that, we had to wait to be sat. Edmund came over to take us to our table in the main room and we sat at a small table for two with fresh flowers. The tea is already chosen for you and is a carefully thought-out blend of black tea that is the perfect flavor. Our server was an absolute joy. She was so nice, attentive, and caring. You were able to get multiples of Yorkshire pudding, scones, cookies, etc. She cleaned up the table all the time and never a crumb left behind. She poured tea and cream constantly it seemed and always had the patience for that beaded cream cover over the cream dispenser. My hat goes off to her. My least favorite item were the tea sandwiches: bland and boring. Most items were mini and not enough in my opinion. If you have a big appetite, make sure to pre-game first as this is just a big snack. The dessert I had packed up to go - it was a mug made of chocolate packed with yellow cake, cream and topped with fresh raspberries. Once I unpacked it at home, I found that the chocolate was too bitter, thick, and tough to eat. The yellow cake was dry and not my favorite. This experience was once in a lifetime thing and very unique. I'm glad we went and enjoyed every moment. read more

I brought my English Mother and two children (10 & 7) and we had a lovely time. The Rose Tree Cottage is definitely an eclectic and atypical High Tea. If you are a Royalist there are plenty of fun nods to the Royal family. According to my daughter, the tea is divine. We went through many cups which were always replenished. And the scones were delicious and not dry. The cucumber sandwiches were definitely outside tho box in that the cukes were marinated in vinegar. The Beef Wellington in a Yorkshire cup, although unusual, was very tasty. Edmund dressed in tails and escorts everyone to the table with pomp and circumstance. The service was attentive and kind. As a girl from England, I am a huge tea drinker and love afternoon tea service. I've been having afternoon tea since I was a teenager. I've been in LA for the past 11 years and have been to several different types of tea rooms and hi-tea but have never been to a British tea room. I finally did and I had such a wonderful time here. It reminded me of home back in England and a wave of nostalgia swept over me. First, parking is easy the day I came, I parked literally right outside the house. We were then greeted by Edmund and the staff who were so lovely and seated us. It was such a surprise to me because I did not expect the interior to be the way it was. It did have a lot of things around since it was both a store and tea house but it was so adorable and cute inside. Sadly, no photos were allowed inside but you can take pictures outside. The staff were all dressed up elegantly; in fact a lot of the guests were also in the "Royal Ascot" type attire but there I was who was a bit more semi-casual. Next time, I'll definitely dress up because it was such a fun experience. I really enjoyed their elderflower drink and you get one type of house blend tea. I wish there were more choices for tea but still, it tasted great. I grew up eating Yorkshire puddings so I was so excited to see they served them here but you were only allowed to pick 2 types of Yorkshire pudding. I wanted to buy more to take home but since they only make a certain amount, it's understandable they couldn't sell them. I was definitely bummed though because their beef wellington and coronation chicken Yorkshire puddings were so good. You get scones, sandwiches and desserts as well. Reservations are a week ahead only so when I called earlier than a week, I couldn't make a reservation. But I will definitely be back! read more
