I've been thinking about a review of this place for a couple of weeks. At first, I had mixed feelings about it, as although the food and service were top notch, the general decor of the place left something to be desired. It just seems rather cluttered and dated. When you consider that men must wear ties and jackets, and ladies must wear a dress or skirt, you'd think you'd be having tea in a more upscale environment. Instead, it's rather faded, and there's all kinds of stuff on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. Then I learned about the husband and wife that own and run the place. Long story short, they also run an orphanage in Kenya. The Missus spends a lot of her time in Kenya, helping to run the orphanage. Sir Edmund runs the tea shop in Pasadena, and is always sending things to Kenya. I believe I overhead him say that he is shipping a couple dozen new sewing machine to the orphanage, so that the young girls can learn a skill. This bit of background knowledge completely cancels out whatever feelings I had towards the decor of the place. Since most of the proceeds from the tea house are going to orphan kids in Kenya, you better believe we're overlooking the decor, and we will be back again and again. read more

They have tea hats, stoves for sale, jackets that Royalty wears (the brand, not the literal jacket), and this is the place that Meghan Markle learned tea etiquette (and they also taught me a thing or two!). You must make an appt for Saturday the Saturday before. The food shop is always open however. They will call you a few days in advance to confirm and offer up directions. Edmund takes an exceptional level of pride in Rose Tree Cottage and it shows. They will seat you down one party at a time. You won't get a tier plate, rather, you will be served bit by bit -- what a treat. Savory pies, followed by homemade scones, jam and clotted cream, followed by sticky toffee (i think?) and they serve you the desserts the Queen would eat. You begin with a popper on the table to celebrate your visit and it is served with one refreshing drink, a delicious eldeberry lemonade. As for tea, they will continue to serve you black tea - and I love that there is just one tea on tap. I came here accidentally an hour early but Edmund showed me around. It is a small quaint cottage and I would definitely say this was the best tea room I've been to yet. I just needed the cost and menu(s) or a description of what is offered for a party of 40. I've driven past the Rose Tree Cottage countless times, and always wanted to go visit and have afternoon tea. As someone who partially grew up in Australia, I have loved strong tea with cream and sugar, and plain scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, and am almost always disappointed with what Americans serve for afternoon tea. I came with friends and I was so delighted to see strong hot tea served with milk, and although the scones had sultanas, it was the the real deal! We were seated in a very English Cottage dining room decorated with memorabilia that for sure had stories behind them, and looked obviously cared for. The linen, the dainty tables and chairs, the flowers, takes you to England, if for the duration of your tea experience. We started with fresh ripe berries and a cordial that the Queen used to favor (name escapes at the moment) - it was so refreshing! Amazingly, more happiness came in the form of Yorkshire pudding cradling delicious Beef Wellington, sausages and other savory delights! And the sweets? Pretty and delicious! The service was superb! The cheerful and witty husband and wife duo makes you feel as if you're long time friends who've come for a visit! Cannot ask for a better, more authentic British Tea experience! To start the man who opened the door only directed his conversation towards my boyfriend. he kept asking if it was a birthday. I thought he was asking because they were going to do something special. It was only so that they could charge us the most expensive price. Then he said, "GO WAIT OVER THERE" and gestured at what looked like a horrible thrift store. The man had me hold him by the arm (very awkward and uncomfortable) I was trying to make the best of it as it WAS my birthday and I came CORRECT. We were sat and already plated were grapes and lays POTATO CHIPS! PATATO CHIPS! For TEA?! They brought out scones that seemed to be the only decent thing they had. They served us stuff that looked like they found it in the sale section at Trader Joe's (if they had one) with a soggy tomato, MICROWAVED. The sandwiches tasted stale and possibly turned. The woman said hello to the whole world barley said anything to me. They also expected me to eat the savory and sweet food on same plate. I was scolded when I switched my tea plate so that I could have a seemingly clean plate for my sweets. The last dessert was this chocolate tea cup that looked cute but the cake inside was so dry. After an uncomfortable service we went to pay and the man comes up to my partner and asks him if he watches the news and proceeds to ask what his opinion on Harry and Megan (I'm brown and my boyfriend is white ) where was he going with this? And he expressed how he disagreed with Harry and if the US will accept him. WELL! For ONE you do not discuss politics or religion as it is not "etiquette". SECOND if the English hadn't fled to the America's (where they STOLE land and did all that all that) this "tea garden" wouldn't even be here, where you over charge for crummy service and low grade food. I WISH I could get Gordon Ramsey in there so he could see how crazy this place is. Spider webs, Christmas, and valentines all rolled in one. Dusty WIGS! THIRD how DARE you ask for gratuity? I have been to 6 afternoon teas in the area, including one in Beverly Hills (twice the price per person), Chado at three locations, and this one had the most over the top service. And yes, I have had Afternoon Tea in London. We went for my wife's birthday, and what a unique place. The place is so eclectic, and it's hard to describe. It's a nice change they ask all phones to be silenced, so you can enjoy the environment. Our sitting was outside. It's hard to compare this to a large scale commercial tea room, where you are stuffed into as little room as possible, and the experience is rushed. This was at a much more sedate pace. And with it being opened two days a week, with two sittings, it has only limited availability. It seems to be run more as a hobby. Yes, you can find a cheaper afternoon tea. But would you have the same quality of experience? With a gentleman in a Tuxedo escorting you to seat? Food was good. The sticky toffee pudding was incredible. And they had a nice birthday candle event for my wife, but no singing. It was all so British. read more

This place has so many rules and has very limited and outdated information on the website. Tea is only available on the weekends. Reservations are only open a week beforehand via phone. Cash or check only, no photos allowed. There is also a shop that is opened at other times but the exact hours are not posted... I called in advance to visit the shop since reservations were all gone. When I arrived, it was closed for a private event until 3. I returned after 3 and the store didn't open. I called and they begrudgingly opened the door to let me in. There are no prices listed for anything and the lady was so grouchy and rude. A small bag of cookies was being sold for over $10... The "fresh and baked daily" scones were refrigerated. Most of the things being sold looked like it has been sitting there for years. I was being followed the entire time I was there and rushed out as soon I paid... We had a really beautiful experience at Rose Tree. I tried to make reservations two weeks ahead because I didn't read the notes on the process. (My bad.) You can call at 10am the Saturday before you want to go to make your reservation and when I did it properly, the reservation was easy to make. They called me the Wednesday before to confirm our attendance. (This is a small business and for someone to take a reservation spot and not show up hurts them financially, plus it's just rude.) We arrived promptly at 1pm and the doors hadn't opened yet but we were welcomed inside quickly by the owner, Edmund, and seated with grace and care. (He is quite a character and has great stories!) The tea was delicious and the food was all tasty. The savory Yorkshire puddings were probably my favorite part (I had the Rarebit and the Wellington) but it was all good. The scones are devine. (They do accommodate vegetarian requests but not vegan or gluten free.) We went to the shop after and got some English candy you can't find at the regular store, scones and sausage rolls, clotted cream, preserves, and other goodies. This place is old-fashioned and kitschy, full of treasures and we definitely had the most authentic English tea I've had anywhere outside of England. This is not a commercial enterprise, it is a lovingly cared for personal experience run by an 80+ year old couple and I loved every second of it. There is a shop inside where they sell anything you could imagine for a quick fix of England. From Batbour coats to British candy, you can find it all. His wife Bakes all the amazing scones and jam and sausage rolls just to name a few. The tea was beautifully put together with so many courses. We could not possibly finish it all. The service was amazing. Our tea got filled without asking, more sandwiches were placed in our plate once we finished. It was never ending food. I chose chicken curry and s/o chose sausage. Both were equally as good, as well as the scones! I loved the sparkling Elderflower lemonade and hope to come by and bit a bottle to go sometime. Dessert was very good. Sadly my stomach cannot handle how sweet they are but if they could... they would be gone. I am very happy to have taken the bites I could though!! They were delicious! I have been the occasional shopper here for a few years, even during COVID. It was usually very good with COVID requirements, however this last time in was a different story. I told my wife we should go there to look for Barbour, because they do have what is probably the best selection in Los Angeles. However in the store the owner was not wearing his mask when he came over, I was a bit shocked. I was also in there with my 11 month old daughter who cannot wear a mask or be vaccinated yet. I mostly tried moving away in the store (which is small) to give some space because since they had some vests that fit my wife. But then his wife took down her mask, and then someone came from the back not wearing a mask, and a teenager came out not wearing a mask, and also sort of standing around, so I felt like it was difficult to even leave. I walked out with my daughter since I was hoping my wife was having luck, but she came out and said taking a chance isn't worth the vest. I was also planing on finally buying a waxed cotton jacket, but instead of leaving spending a few hundred dollars there, we will spend it somewhere else, either online or in a store where mask wearing is required. After my wife came out (I was sitting on a bench in front of the house) the owner came and mentioned that they were all vaccinated and boosted. But as of the end of December in 2021, it is a bit absurd to think it is okay and not understand what is going on and think it's okay to not only not follow LA County health codes but also not realize it makes people uncomfortable. The review isn't all bad, they do have lots of british treats, albeit very expensive and many of which can be found at the British Store in Santa Monica, but also a great selection of Barbour. Just none of it is great enough to feel my daughter wasn't safe in there. read more

Upon entering the very English Cottage, Edmund, resplendent in a tux with tails and white gloves, escorted me to our small table in a cozy and elegantly furnished room. From start to finish, the service was superb and warm. Not only was the room charmingly filled with English memorabilia, flowers and special doilies, but each exceptional course--baked on the premises--was personally served. They have a small store filled with imported English specialty foods and novel gifts. Many guests came in costume, which added to the ambiance (they even sell fascinators). When we were served the non-alcoholic Elderberry cordial, Edmund offered the flask in his jacket "as an alternative." Had the best experience on the 19th of May. Had the privilege of having Edmond serve the tea. I love this tea house been coming here since I was little before it was at this location. My mom and I went shopping all week for our outfits for the event. It was a special tea celebrating the marriage of Harry and Meghan. Got the dresses, hat, and I made my fascinator. They have the best house blend tea. It's so flavorful, and it's so light. They brew it just right. It's so cozy in there you are treated like royalty when you are there. That's fine, my mom has certainly been guilty of talking a lot. BUT. The reason this place gets a one star from me is because of what happened as we were leaving. The owner offered to take a picture of us. My mom was chatting with some other guests who were also leaving. The owner turns to me and says: "do you live with your mother? No? Oh, that's how you can put up with her." I have never been so offended in my life. That is my mother you are talking about, and IT WAS HER BIRTHDAY.
