I am boarding my horse with Mary and Patrick for 4 years now and love the friendly, family like atmosphere at this small gem of a barn. They have a large riding arena, a round pen, a medium and a small turn out. They are 5 minutes away from Happy Trails. A lot of barns are "judgmental and competitive", not this barn. Everybody is friendly and we help each other out. Mary and Patrick respond quickly, if I have a question or problem. Everybody has their own small tack/feed storage room by their corral. read more

Moved to Apex after boarding at my own place for awhile so I was rather spoiled. The new owner has done an excellent job making the ranch very appealing for boarders and their horses. Most everything has been updated. The facilities are excellent. Feed top quality. The Worker kind and attentive to the horses. Great arena, turn outs & round pen. Easy access to trails. Very nice considerate boarders. This is such a calm and serene place that we look forward to spending as much time there as possible. This ranch has sold to a new owner that instead of making long term loyal boarders feel ok, he threatened and demanded every step of the way and if he didn't get what he wanted he was going to intimidate everyone and anyone. His go to is "if you don't like it than you can leave." "If you don't follow the rules I'll just kick you out." Mind you 99% of us were long standing clients of Apex that always paid on time, followed the rules, hardly asked for anything and stayed loyal to Apex instead of fleeing the second the ranch went on the market. Previous owners went out of their way to try and find someone that "promised" to keep the business as is. He started changing everything the second he came in and did it in such a way that made many of us very uncomfortable(ie: first boarder meeting when he took it upon himself to scream at all of us for absolutely no reason other than he was the new ranch owner). Horrible customer service and uses intimidation as his go to tactic. By all means take your chance at Apex...there's a slight chance the guy will love you and praise the ground you walk on(like he has with only certain people and only, I repeat, AND ONLY IF you do anything and everything he asks of you or tells you to do. But whatever you do don't show a backbone he doesn't appreciate that) or you take the chance that he will just despise you and make it very known and make you completely uncomfortable. Don't even get me started on his one sided contract that literally ONLY protects him and there is not one thing in there protecting you as a boarder or your horse from what this guy could do if you cross him. BEWARE! But other than all that beautiful property, would have a lot of turn outs if he wasn't building a ton more stalls up in the old pasture area which then adding more stalls and adding more boarders but never increasing the amenities...I don't know you do the math.... oh sorry this was suppose to be like the nice part or something...beautiful property...ummm....gated with a code and a new fancy sign out front...little cute solar lights in the arena OH AND EVEN BETTER...stadium lighting at night pointed directly into the pipe stalls down below so your horses can be blinded for 3+ hours at night...and last but NOT least make sure you're able bodied cuz you're gonna be doing a lot of your own work if you like a tidy stall and certain things a certain way...annnnddd I'm done. I boarded my horse at Apex for the last two years. I only left because I moved out of state, where I have my own facility now. The facility is well maintained and a groomed, lighted and occasionally even watered arena (before drought restrictions went into effect) was a dream. The owners handle staff issues quickly and the current barn manager/worker is a wonderful person who gets the jobs done quickly and with a friendly smile and word. He is a dream. The owners are also very reasonable and easy to deal with in terms of arranging everything from feeding all the way to possibly having a visitor for a day or two. Some reviews suggested issues with amount of feed, and I'd like to address that. Apex has set fees for set services. They are very upfront and transparent about them. Many of us who have boarded there, prefer a different feed situation. I wanted my mare on half alfalfa half grass. Others have their horses on only grass etc. Apex provides a set amount of alfalfa. They are happy to help accommodate you bringing in your own other feed at your cost, and the barn manager is extremely flexible in feeding the horses whatever the owners want. If you want 3 feedings a day or special feed, just pay the barn manager whatever he charges for that, and it will happen. It is the same with supplements and blankets. I never used extra services provided by Apex because I made friends with the other boarders there, and we all help each other out if need be. If its just feeding additional grass or other hay besides what is provided, they generally provide the service if you provide the feed. This is the first facility I've ever boarded at where every single boarder gets along to some extent, from being ok with each other all the way to being best friends with them. Its a small place, with only a handful of boarders who are like family with each other. When someone doesn't fit in, of course they are going to be hurt, upset or even angry or vindictive. Trust me, I am an extremely honest reviewer. I would not make a positive review simply to counter a negative review. I went to the owners on more than one occasion with a problem I had with something on the facility or with a maintenance issue, and it was always resolved professionally and satisfactorily on my end and I assume on theirs. Additionally, they are a short ride to Happy Camp Regional Park, which is a huge place to ride and enjoy nature. It has a large parking area so people can trailer in as well, and it is loaded with green grass and wild oats in the spring, as well as numerous wild flowers and a view to the ocean from the upper plateau. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinions and likewise can make any review they choose. People who create multiple accounts solely to post more negative reviews about their experience negate their original negative review, by being so vindictive. Take it for what it looks like. No one coerced me to make a review. I'm a prolific reviewer on many platforms. I want people to have the chance to try or avoid things that I liked or didn't. That is all. Pat and Mary are nice people, who run a nice boarding facility. Its not for everyone, but for most boarders, its a nice place. read more

I was looking for a place to live in the Moorpark area and wanting to move my horse there as well. I found Apex Ranch and was immediately welcomed by the owners themselves for a tour. Their ranch is so lovely and they are always making sure everything is in working order. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, I was unable to find a place to live therefore unable to move my horse there. While planning to move my horse their communication was stellar whether it was over phone or e-mail. They offer a variety of stall choices making it friendly for someone who is on a budget or someone who wants to splurge on their horse. They also have the Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park (3,000 acres) around the corner, easily accessible to horse and rider. I highly recommend Apex Ranch to anyone looking for a place to board in Moorpark or the surrounding area. read more

Just because the owners live across the street doesn't mean they are good managers. In my case, minor issues were not addressed in a timely, professional manner and I ended up in a turf war with a fellow boarder. If your horse is bigger than a pony, expect to pay for extra hay.
