We recently treated our six year old granddaughter to her first live theater experience here for the performance of "Annie". We hoped that she would enjoy it, and indeed she did. It was so sweet to have her alternate at times from laying her head on Dear Hubby's shoulder and then mine. Sometimes she would sit up tall and lean forward at certain times in the show. After, she said, "I want to stay until the next one", thinking that the cast would be doing a second show right away the same day. She doesn't yet realize how much energy and effort goes into a performance like this, but I loved the positive reaction. The theater, while small scale and local, nonetheless does a great job of putting on entertainment which captivates their audiences. It's a blessing to have this venue close to home, away from the hassles and expense of going into L.A. Ticket prices are reasonable, parking is free, and the staff is friendly. The large cast managed to sing, dance, and act their way through a beloved classic musical on a smallish stage and made it work. Kudos to the visual technology that makes set decoration a new type of visual art. We're looking forward to seeing "Footloose" at the Arts Center soon. read more

What a great local treasure! We went to see a production of Spamalot ($35/seat). The cast was great - not just great for a community theater but great for the quality of the performance. Every lead was spot on. And the theater itself is a joy. Small enough that there isn't a bad seating the house (we were in the next to last row and had a great view of the stage). Just saw the Surf City All Stars doing early Beach Boys stuff. All the musicians had some association with the actual Beach Boys including an original band member. They were fantastic and got many of the audience members dancing in the aisles or in their seats. Saw the Broadway play Newsies back in '23 at this venue. I'm amazed at the quality of shows they put on in such an intimate 266 seat theater. read more

Is now using AI generated images in their productions. I've attended many musicals at this theater. They have always been amazing. However, in their current production of Cinderella, they have resorted to using AI generated imagery in ALL of their projected backdrops. This is an insult to the arts. Not only does AI run on stolen artwork, its awful for the environment, and ruins the quality of the performance. This is an unacceptable thing for the theater to allow if they respect the arts. read more

After our local theater closed, I decided to google other community theaters and found this one! It was perfect for a date night. Reasonable ticket prices, great seating (every seat is a wonderful view of the stage), and clean throughout. We saw Little Shop of Horrors and the cast did a great job! All sex jokes are crude you goofball. They took a mediocre script with *some* unfunny sexual jokes and made them ironically funny. How many iconic scripts are brought to life with awful production? Even this is harrowing to achieve. This cast has taken an o.k. script and made it watchable enough for me to have seen it 8 times with 4 shows left. Every show so far at or near capacity. How do you do this? With horrible singing, obviously. Return to Margaritaville sounds like a sequel and they shouldn't do that but Escape to Margaritaville is dope. read more

This theatre is a GEM! Every show here is incredible!! In The Heights and Matilda were especially amazing! The talent is just amazing and we loved every minute of the performances. Next door is a fun little pub and down the street there are some nice restaurants if you want a bite to eat before a show. We love High Street and can't wait to go back for more shows! We recently saw Newsies at this facility. First time seeing Newsies and first time at this facility. Staff was friendly, helpful, and organized. The show was great as well - to my surprise, I found out the gentleman who was playing Jack this night was actually the understudy for the role. I have not seen the show with the main "Jack" , but I know that the understudy was indeed fantastic and definitely made the show as great as it was! Bravo, Jack! read more

First time ever in Moorpark last night to see Billy Joel tribute band Billy Nation. We were very impressed by both the band and this awesome intimate venue. Built in 1927 it has passed the test of time with straight A's. Not a bad seat in the house. Very well run facility with cocktails which we really love. Clean bathrooms and btw this small theater has great acoustics. Not usually the case in my experience. My hat is off to this awesome venue and the great people who run it. read more

This is our first time visiting this venue. It is very quaint and lovely inside. We saw the play Escape to Margaritaville yesterday. It was the worst play I have ever seen. The story line was terrible and the acting was mediocre to say the least. The plot was basically about a woman that was unhappy with her husband to be and her best friend told her not to marry her. The other characters were promoting drinking and sex on the beach with the addition foul language. In other scenes, there were characters in the background who were promoting social weirdnesses. I do not recommend this place for anyone. read more

Built way back in 1927 this theater managed to survive the times and was purchased by the city to be reborn as the High Street Arts Center. Moorpark at the southern edge of Ventura County was mostly an agricultural town and High street was one of the main drags long before the 23, 118 or 101 fwy's existed. I loved seeing their production of 'Aida' this past weekend. It was the one with music by Tim Rice and Elton John. How can you go wrong? All the actors were fantastic, I won't even quibble. I liked the costumes, they were a riot. This particular show is playing until St. Patrick's day 2013 or thereabouts. The theater itself has one level for seating, 2nd story is for production/employees. The leg room was satisfactory, I liked the little ledge they had behind each row of seats. It worked good as a footrest/purse rest/drink rest. We sat on the right hand side and the view was decent, except if there was some scene going on in the upper right. Very nicely done interior, adequate restrooms, nice concessions. Great job, Moorpark. I forgot to mention the greatest thing, the price. 16$ for students, teachers, or seniors. Less for kids, 20$ for adults. The pricing might be higher for opening night, at least that was my understanding. read more

I must say I am biased in this review since I am the President of the Moorpark Foundation for the Arts so we promote the Arts in MP. However, I have had hundreds of people tell me that the HSAC is second to no other theatre in Ventura County. Come see for yourself. THe 2012-2013 season will have the following: Moorpark Melodrama, Seussical, Holiday Show 2012, Aida, Inherit the Wind and the Producters. Seats can be reserved for groups for around $10.00 and highest seat on Opening nite is $22.00. Plus you can have a "real" drink in the theatre! That is awesome compared to other venues!THis theatre has great qualify shows and actors for Community Theatre. My family sees alot of theatre--amateur and professional. Don't miss 'Cinderelladrama' at the High Street Arts Center. It is another smash hit for HSAC. I am absolutely amazed that the theater company can produce such high quality entertainment and yet have such modest ticket prices. 'Cinderelladrama' is a melodrama and if you have never seen melodrama at its' absolute best, you owe it to yourself to see this production. Audience participation is highly encouraged and makes the show even more fun. Footloose was awful ! We see just about all plays and musicals in this County and this was absolutely the worst. Just a bunch of high school kids who cannot sing, dance or act. Stage packed with all these kids running into each other. Main male making attempts at dancing and gymnastics was appalling. Singers screaming with no vocal training. Three of us went, my husband, me and our son. We left at intermission.A real ripoff for $20 a pop. You have, in the past done some great presentations, but used good talent, some younger people and adults and professionals. What has happened ? Go see Don't Dress For Dinner at our Camarillo Skyway Playhouse if you want to see some talent and a very reasonable price. read more

I've enjoyed many, many shows at this theater over the years. In fact, my first exposure to live theater was here as a 6 year old, when it was called, "The Moorpark Melodrama". The city now owns this space and the seasons include a variety of types of shows - dramas, comedies, and musicals. Built in the 1920's as a silent movie theater, the charming aesthetics remain even though the theater underwent somewhat of a "facelift" about a decade ago by it's previous owner, Larry Janss. read more

We LOVE this theater. It is our first season as subscribers and we couldn't be more impressed, but their current version of The Producers was out of this world. Saw Les Mis last night. The cast was very, very good, and the production had high value. My only complaint was that the music was a tad too loud at times, and this made it hard to hear some of the singing. This is a minor complaint. Really loved the show.
