#1. I love this place. #2. I love that I live extremely close to it and can gorge myself on their delicious pastry pretty much anytime I want (except Monday, on which I believe they are closed). Honore is the best bakery/pastry shop I've yet to find in Seattle. It's always full of neighborhood Ballardites who know a good thing when they find it. I love their onion & gruyere tart. It's sooo flaky & yummy. A nice savory choice instead of the usual sweet pastry. Don't get me wrong though, their sweeter options like the berry tart is fantabulous as well. Do yourself a favor if you find yourself in north Ballard some lovely morning: stop by Honore and just see if you aren't highly satisfied with the artisan pastries the baker is whipping up there as your latte is made. We went here for breakfast Saturday and after reading the reviews on Yelp I was really excited to try everything. The place is adorable, the line moves quickly and their cases are always being restocked with fresh baked goods. What's not to like about that? Unfortunately, aside from the most delicious gougere ever the quiche, croissant, and cannele did not measure up to what I expected. The quiche filling was perfect but the crust was a little burnt. The croissant wasn't soft at all or flavorful but the worst was the cannele. I've been to France, eaten my fair share of these delicacies and I make them at home. These were overcooked and the orange flavoring really took away from the crisp vanilla bean. I do not recommend ordering these. I do recommend ordering and consuming the gougeres at a feverish pace. They were absolute perfection and if I didn't live so far away I might consider going there right now for one (or two). For those not in the know, there is an adorable little patio in the back of the shop by the bathrooms for dining in. I highly recommend it. read more

I would rate this little bakery a solid 3.5 stars. I expected more offerings. I arrived on a Saturday, early afternoon to find their refrigerated case completely empty and their pastry case half filled. I've been craving Kouing Aman (pronounced something close to "queen-a-mahn") a flaky pastry. It was not among the best I've had. The dough should be flaky, like a croissant, but with more substance. Also, by shoving them into muffin tins, they lose a lot of their airiness. This one was also more savory and a bit overbaked....there should be a sweet/butteriness to the center. The coffee was amazing...probably the best cup I've ever had and the counter person was as sweet as she could be. Such a cute little bakery...just wish there was more of a selection. read more

I'm sad that I have to give this place this low of a review since I loved it so much last time I was here :( Ordered a bunch of macarons to-go. After leaving, I found a short hair after biting into one. I tried to shrug it off, but I found another small hair on another one of my macarons. What is going on here? One hair is already pushing it but not a huge deal, but the second hair in the other macaron is the limit. I've been taking the boy on a tour of the macarons that Seattle has to offer, so we stopped here on a sunny Sunday morning. We tried the passionfruit, the chili chocolate, the hazelnut, the pistachio and the lavender. They were all quite good, although a bit chewier than I like. Good coffee, pleasant service. The highlight was the pain au chocolat, which was warm, flaky, crispy and chewy at the same time. Basically the perfect breakfast treat. read more

5 stars for the famous kouign amann and 4 stars for the ham/cheese croissant and no stars for not having their macarons out at 8 am :( I was super craving macarons this morning and was bummed I wanted to try their chili chocolate and white truffle something that I've seen in pictures. Anyways, the bakery itself is pretty hidden deep within the Phinney Ridge neighborhood. It's TINY so I wasn't surprised to see a line forming out the door. They really need to widen their seating area because they only have the bar seats by the window, the benches outside, and the tables in the back (but really who's gonna sit back there when it's like 50 degrees and gloomy out everyday in seattle) I realized their kitchen behind the counter is HUGE! they have so much space back there why not use some of that for more butts to happily sit down in your bakery instead of being forced to eat their croissants in their car where the flakes get everywhere!! cough cough. The kouign amann reminded me of what a cronut would look and taste like lol it's like the fancy french version though. But it's probably my new favorite thing right now. It had a sweet/syrupy film on the outside and when you bite down YUM there was a mixture of sweet and salty (i think there was a little salt they add on the top) and the inside was chewy and soft. so good i was depressed when i ate it all so fast. I also felt like something savory so got the ham/cheese croissant and thought it was just good! I think mine was a little overcooked on the outside so it was crunchier than I wanted it to be but the inside was the best part! Salty ham, cheese, and the inside of the croissant dough was way more smooth and agreeable with my teeth than the outside! Mmm, yum. The world (and Seattle in particular) needs more French bakeries IMHO. So when my bf and I were cruising up 15th looking for garage sales and saw the Honore sign instead, it brought great hopes in me that Saint Honore bakery from Portland might have migrated north. Turns out they are not affiliated with the Portland spot, but the Seattle Honore is still very promising. We were stuffed from an earlier lunch so only got the berry tart , but it was delicious - raspberries & blackberries nestled in a flaky and moist dough. The fact that they serve up coffee from Lighthouse roasters is A ++ as well. The selection of baked goods was pretty small however, so I'm curious whether this will expand over time. Without long customer lines or the busy car traffic nearby, Honore may just be the off-the-beaten-path alternative for Besalu that I've been waiting for. I'll be back for sure. read more

Theses are some good macarons, macaroons whatever you want to call them. Very light shell with flavorful but not too-sweet fillings. I always grab a box when i'm in Seattle and usually finish them within a day, regretting I hadn't bought two or three boxes. Honore Artisan Bakery also has many other french pastries like croissants (which are very light and buttery). I saw pretty much everyone getting them so I decided to check it out as well and was very surprised at how good and addictive they were. The macarons (alone) are worth the trip to this bakery - they are flaky, airy, soft, chewy and ooooooh so good on your taste buds. The assortment of flavors are amazing. If you're not sure what you're in the mood for, then I recommend your selection should be based on favorite color(s). We had their pistachio (green), coconut caramel sea salt (light brown) and raspberry buttercreme (pink). They were THE BEST macarons I've ever had the pleasure of consuming. I couldn't wait to try this bakery after reading all the great reviews and hearing that they have macarons. I arrived about 10 min after they opened on a Sunday and as I would expect they were still filling the case as pastries finished baking. I pulled up a stool and waited for the baker to continue to unload fresh goodies into the case and also it was the perfect chance to see what the regulars were ordering. I decided I had to try the pain au chocolat and the kouign amann. Both were great! The pain au chocolat had great texture and flakiness to it I just wish there was a bit more chocolate. The kouign amann was layered goodness with a hint of sweet and salty to it. I also ordered 2 macarons (they weren't out yet so just ask if you don't see them) coconut with salt caramel and the pistachio. Macarons are one of my favorite food items. When I was in Paris a couple of months ago I did a bit of a taste test between Laduree and Pierre Herme just cause I had to find the best in the city. (Pierre Herme won :) ) These were the best macarons I have had in Seattle. Although I love Bakery Nouveau, Honore has better macarons. Good balance of crunchy and chewy and the flavor in both, especially the coconut one, was so good. I can't wait to go back to try more flavors! This is top 5 in Seattle? Is there a dispensary nearby or something? I have no idea of why anyone would go here and not just drive a little further to Besalu. I've read through the notes below and agree with what many people have seen. The croissants are borderline burned. I brought up how brown they were and the staff noted that, "well, they're croissanty". Oddly, when I was in France, the croissants weren't this croissanty. These might be alright if you were making a turkey sandwich, but on their own, they were not very good. The layout of the place is really bad given the amount of business they do and the service was slow. The counter is very close to the door and there's only one door and it's in the middle. They have two small counters for people to sit. They could get rid of one, have two doors and actually have people flow through. I shared a few pastries I got from there and none of them were really any good. One of them can easily be replicated by putting some jam in a shell from the frozen section of the grocery store. We hit up Besalu afterwards to get our fix. Much better. read more

You should probably come here earlier in the day if you want better selection of pastries/desserts. I came at 130pm. There wasn't much left. I got a vanilla iced latte, which was good. I tried 3 macarons: 1) Hazelnut, not bad, probably best one out of the three I had, but I do think Le Panier's version is better 2) Salted Caramel - Didn't taste the "salted" part of it, I prefer the one at Urban Coffee Lounge 3) White Chocolate Truffle Vanilla Bean - My least favorite, it was just odd. In terms of seating, they have a bit of outdoor seating in the back, but nothing fancy. It's like sitting in a small backyard. The lady was pretty nice though. Delicious and amazing pastries at this hidden neighborhood gem. Perfection here is defined by flaky crispy sweetness in each bite. We found this place while waiting for our table at The Fat Hen across the street. I am so glad that we did! There is a beautiful display case of tasty temptations and coffee drink menu. Onion Gruyere & Thyme pastry - So good!!! I loved the combination of flavors of the crunchy onion, melted Gruyere as herby sweetness of the thyme. The crust was a wonderful flaky croissant, cooked perfectly. Still dreaming about this concoction. Kouign Amann - such a unique little Breton cake with intricate flavors of buttery caramelized sugar. I have never had anything like it! Pastries pair perfectly with the latte. Service was friendly and prompt. There are a few barstools available for seating by the window, but our group didn't mind standing and enjoying our pastries and coffee. Street parking is ample and free in the neighborhood. Wow, this is all I have to say after trying a pain au chocolat this morning. What is striking is the weight or rather the lack of. It's amazing how feathery and light the croissant is, yet so rich and buttery. The chocolate was also well integrated and wasn't in a large chunk that inferior croissants have. There is limited seating at two counters and a table outside, so it's not a place you can hang out for hours. Seattle is definitely becoming a hotbed for fine bakeries and Honore is leading the pack for now. read more

Love that about seattle purveyors. Chairs out front, perfect for waiting for your name to be called at fat hen. Loved the asian barista with the white eyeliner. This is a long overdue shout out for honore bakery! I love that it is off the beaten path and that the kitchen appears to be three times the size of the little walk up counter space and bar stool window seats in the front. I feel that is a sign of a fantastic bakery when the kitchen is that big. The secret wonder is the outdoor patio area in the back. You feel like you are transformed outside of Seattle and into a little nook away from the city. Pure delight! Also, the two gals who work the front of the house are always so sweet and make a good cup of coffee to go along with your choice baked good. Pros: 1. Friendly service 2. Good coffee (lighthouse roasters) 3. ham & cheese croissant (buttery yummy tasty delicious) 4. scones (especially love their lemon ginger scone and currant scone) 5. lime cornmeal cookies (the texture is a bit grainy due to the cornmeal but i love citrus and cookies and find this totally delightful with a latte) 6. outdoor patio on a nice sunny day Cons: 1. It is hit or miss on the selections of baked goods. Some days I go and they have a little of everything, other days they are down to like 2 or 3 selections. So consistency of whether or not they have what I want is not quite up to par 2. The lines can get quite long but hey totally understandable and props to them for having delicioius items worthy of long lines 3. I've had better macarons. I just experienced the most wonderful salted caramel macaroon and felt compelled to drop what I was doing and write this review. After reading these reviews, I went to Honore for the first time this past weekend looking for almond croissants. I was pleased to find delicious croissants that are on the same level as Bakery Nouveau, but closer to home. The almond croissant was buttery, flaky, almondy and huge! So I split it into two meals. Totally hit the spot. I didn't start liking french macaroons until I discovered the amazing macaroons at Bakery Nouveau. These macaroons, however, are just as fluffy and delicious. The salted caramel had smooth caramel cream filling, and a surprise: a center of real salted caramel. It was absolutely lovely and my only regret is not getting more when I had the chance. I will be back to try everything (tarts, savory pastries etc.)! Love it. read more

I have a theory that I will OD on macarons and die one day. Its very possible. That is how much I love them. Unfortunately, Seattle bakeries don't seem to pay enough respect to these wonderful bits of heaven...or so I thought till I tasted the macarons from Honore. I ate macarons for a year and a half in France and ever since being exiled back to the US I have been on a quest to find an authentic macaron comparable to the ones I ate there. These were too chewy and visibly lumpy - not light and delicate like an authentic macaron. Still good, don't get me wrong - but not what I was hoping for. I also tried an onion gruyere pastry and was not terribly impressed with that either. I really wanted to try the honey cheesecake but not sure if it's worth a trip back. read more

I am almost reluctant to put a review up for Honoré in fear that there will be a long line out the door, as with Besalú. But they definitely deserve it. I had the Kouign Amann, which was was so delicious... crumbly croissant-like layers with caramelized sugar on the outside, and a sprinkling of sea salt on top. It's amazing how the salt complements the pastry so well. I also got a Canelé, which was eggy-tasting, but good. Very crunchy on the outside. Not too sweet. I couldn't believe it, some guy walked in there after I got mine and bought all of the Canelés in the case! Must be in high demand. I could never understand the love of macaroons. They are just way too sweet. I couldn't even eat one at Ladurée in Paris. For whatever ridiculous reason I thought getting one here would change my mind. I think it was because the coconut caramel sea salt sounded good - It must've been the sea salt that threw me off. I thought it would make the sweetness not so bad. I was wrong. Still too sweet. Anyway, if you love macaroons, this is the place to go, since they have many enticing flavors. I guess I'll never like them. All-in-all, great pastries, good coffee. I got a few pastries to take home and try. Definitely will go back when I have a craving for Kouign Amann. Great place with great French pastries, though docked a star because it was slightly too rich and buttery (that's possible???) and there was a line outside- slightly overhyped. Came here before a pantry cooking class on a Saturday morning and ordered the kougn aman, almond croissant and ham and cheese croissant. I'd say the almond croissant was the weakest link and it was still fantastic. Though after splitting 3 pastries between the 2 of us, my body started feeling a bit overloaded with the butter and sugar. Kougn aman was the tastiest but also don't think I could have gone through one of those alone(see above statement). Yummy spot to treat yourself but don't recommend it regularly.... read more

It's all about the caneles. Get your own. I'm not sharing (next time). Mostly a light touch with sugar, which makes me happy. Sweet doesn't need to be cloying. Hiromi digs the style of croissants here compared to those served at Besalu, and I can see what she's saying, but Besalu and Bakery Nouveau reliably have right-out-of-the-oven croissants of similar quality, and their right-from-the-oven texture trumps the slightly better flavor of Honore's for me. When Honore has the lines out the door they deserve, I suspect theirs will beat everyone else. I'm not a huge, huge fan of kouign aman, but if I were, this is the place I'd go. read more

A canelé is a small French pastry with a soft and tender custard center and a dark, thick caramelized crust. I lived 28 years of my life and had never tried a canele before entering the hallowed doors of Honore! What an amazing texture and flavor... I was very much surprised at the custard-like texture of this particular French dessert. I also appreciated the fact that it wasn't overly sweet, being more of a savory-craving gal myself. Honore is a great place to find something special to bring to a dinner party, or brunch - or as a weekend morning treat with your coffee. Bonus points if you can walk there from your Ballard neighborhood - they are in such a nice place in Ballard perfect for people and dog watching if you can score a seat outside (weather permitting, of course!). I LOVE every single pastry here! From savory quiches to plain croissants to the kouign amann to the delicious little macarons, I have to yet to have to encounter a bad treat! It is really hard to pinpoint it down to a favorite pastry, but I recently had a rhubarb tart that was superb! Not too sweet, but not too tart! Might only be a seasonal thing though.. It's like eating a extra crispy sweet croissant :). I meant to try their macaroons too but I forgot! It was looking a rainbow of desserts! So oh darn I will have to make another trip .. Stopped by here since the line up for Fat Hen was over an hour long and I'm so glad we did! We had the chocolate almond croissant, bacon and blue cheese quiche, lemon meringue tart and 4 macarons. The quiche is one of the best quiche I've ever had! The filling was very moist and soft. You can see it jiggle as you carry the plate to your seat!! The blue cheese flavor was subtle yet nice. The only complain I would have is the crust is a tad soggy on the bottom. The chocolate almond croissant was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It wasn't as almond-y as I wanted, that might be because I am a huge almond fan. Comparing to Café Besalu, I think Honore's croissant comes to a close second. I prefer Café Besalu's croissant because I think the flavors are more balanced. The lemon meringue tart had a good tartness but it was too sweet for my taste and at $6 per tart I expected nothing less than perfection. However, all the components did come together very well. The macarons were the best I've had in Seattle, but still did not satisfy my craving for macarons (I've been spoiled by Pierre Herme's ones in Paris!). We had the passion fruit chocolate, lavender chocolate, coconut and salted caramel. The size is a bit small, around 1" in diameter. The filling was not filled to the brim as I expected but the flavors were good. In terms of atmosphere, the store front is very small, which made it a bit hard to line up. I love the display of all their pastries and cakes and the staff were friendly! Overall, I would definitely recommend Honore to anyone that is looking to satisfy their sweet tooth. We tried over half the pastries in the case and they all rocked. Quality croissants are hard to find, but these guys nailed the flaky/tender/crisp/buttery combination that is so elusive. The lattes were served in beer glasses, which I thought was unusual and fun. The girls running minding the place were really friendly and helpful, and were happy to rattle off what every non-obvious pastry was. The light but not "smooth" jazz playing in the background made us want to hop a plane to Paris to see how this authentic-feeling bakery would compare. I suspect it would hold its own.... read more

Hubby loves the croissant. I love the kouign amann and macarons! This place also has a little courtyard in the back. The texture is just uh-mazing and the flavor is just as described. We got the chocolate, lavender, coffee, hazelnut, and salted caramel coconut and you can't go wrong with any one of them. They are $1.90 each. I also got the almond croissant, gruyere and onion puff, and coffee. The gruyere onion puff was good but wished there was more filling to it and the almond croissant was good but I'll admit, I do prefer Bakery Nouveau more. The cream in the middle was not overly sweet and smooth. The outside of the macaron was perfectly crisp yet chewy.
