This store is in busy old town Alexandria, VA. For the prices compared to what it's around, here's where you want to go. One of the major problems is parking. Good luck with this. You might find the garages to be your best bet. It is a busy location. I would like to say this one is quite nice. My guess is economics play a part, but clothes aren't all over the place. The selection is pretty good, although fall and winter seems the best time. I was a bit disappointed by spring and summer collections. As for the employees they are quite nice. Also the registers don't have mile long lines here. I'm happy with that! read more

Talk about local gems, it's hard pressed for me to find cute things to piece together an outfit, let alone two and some shoes. 2pair of Pants(blue&black jeans), 2 shirts (a sheer long news print type and a fringed jean shirt and some black booties. Ooooo, I'm gonna be cute when I get home. The items that I saw in the ross out here are definitely not in our Ross's back in home on the westcoast. This is a great Ross store and conveniently located in Old Town. The staff are friendly and helpful and the store has a good range of clothing and home wares. Stock rotates frequently hence the slight disorganization that is typical of most Ross stores. I think some other reviewers expect too much - prices are low and there are bargains to be had. Surprisingly low-end for Old Town. Always surprised at the general level of disorder at the Old Town Ross, especially considering its giant footprint and tony neighbors on King Street. And even more so compared to its better organized competitors Marshalls and TJ Maxx within a ten minute drive with better parking. Store is arranged linearly, with mens' items in the back with home goods. Home goods are so haphazardly arranged that finding something constitutes a yard sale-like rummaging adventure. Quality of items seems a bit less curated than at the TJX stores. One bright spot is that given the lack of customers, lines are non-existent at this discount stores. read more

This is a bottom-feeder Ross, but due to its location it's also a godsend. Having lived in Old Town for the past five years (and moving every year to boot), I've furnished many a crib thanks to this Ross. Where else in Old Town can you buy a down comforter for $30? I'll tell you--nowhere. Curtains, kitchen gadgets, crock pots, all for butt cheap and without the hassle of enduring that hot dog Target smell (not to mention a drive up Route 1). One of the employees has massive b.o., though, so on a bad day you can sniff something much worse than four-hour-old hot dogs. I never come here with something in mind--you're just setting yourself up for disappointment--but often leave here with a great deal. I've gotten awesome dresses for a mere $10. A Swarovski giant cross necklace too, and I didn't even complain when it broke because it was only $20. The purse and shoe sections basically blow, but stick to the dresses and housewares and you'll be a happy shopper. It's also a great place to pick up gifts for your breeder friends--toys and baby clothes in spades. P.S. I got a tumbler set for a friend here, one with Dre and the other with Snoop. The chronic. RIght off the main drag of Old Town Alexandria... Found some cute sundresses, some fun Max dresses, and a really cool Calvin Klein little black flowy dress! This place is kind of like a thrift store, but with new clothes and some decent mall labels. Usually I find nothing there, but sometimes if you feel like digging through their racks, which today were pretty full, you can find some cool things. Some scary cheap stuff too. The main cashier on the weekends is without a smile but the three salespeople I met near the dressing room were very friendly and helpful. read more

Lack of sizes. The men's section is consistently cleared out of any clothing or shoe sizes that aren't M, L, XL, XXL, etc. If you're looking for S, forget it. You'll be lucky to even find more than a couple t-shirts, if that. Shoe sizes from men's 7, 7.5, and 8 are also consistently cleared out. Only shop here if you're a L, XL, or XXL sized man with big feet. read more

Like other reviewers have already mentioned, the anger and indignation at customers wanting to pay for something is completely misplaced. I was ostentatiously not acknowledged by the lady at the counter called "Ester" and then angrily told to "put the stuff down here". After she finished the checkout, she turned halfway away from me so that she would not have to face me when handing me the receipt! Such behavior is beyond the pale. Today was my first time experiencing Old Alexandria. My East Coast friends have told me I'd love it here and should check it out, since I'm a Cali girl. They were right. The vibe is definitely Berkeley, Westwood, and Palo Alto-ish. Unfortunately, I was quite surprised and disrespected while visiting Ross. While perusing an aisle of dresses, a security guard pushed his way passed me and pretended to be a shopper. He then proceeded to look at dresses right next to me, pushed dresses on the rack toward me, and outright blocked me from shopping. Not in the mood for an altercation, I stated my disapproval with, "Are you serious?" and walked away. I left the store without buying anything and continued on with my otherwise happy day. read more

Every time I come here I always find something, whether it's clothes, shoes, home items etc. This location clothes and shoes are very neat and organized. The staff here is very friendly as well. This is only the second time I've set foot inside this Old Town Ross location, and I don't mind it too much. Both times I've been now have been busy - not sure if it's just my timing or because given the location you'd generally consider there'll be a lot of foot-traffic. I've not had any issues with staff here - they've let me be and I've not seen them make clowns of themselves by talking loudly or acting obnoxiously like their counterparts on the MD side of the bridge. The associates at this Old Town location have been friendly and polite, including the security guards. I've not visited here often because parking can be a pain. It's all well and good if you live nearby or have other parts of Old Town on your day's itinerary. Otherwise, you'll likely find it a challenge to find parking nearby. But again, the walking will do you good, and I have to admit I do enjoy a dander around and taking in Old Town, especially during summer. This Ross like most has more clothes for birds than for men. I stopped by hoping to find a good pair of black leather gloves, but no good. There were hardly any good finds in the sizes I was after either for trousers or shirts, and this location seems to stock less of these types of clothes than the nearby MD locations. The gadgets and gizmos section was also lacking. I've stopped checking out shoes here, and consider that there are other places worth following up for men's footwear (I'm looking right @you, DSW). Once again, I don't mind this Ross store too much: the location in Old Town is both good and bad for me; parking can be frustrating; but the associates here are friendly and seem happy to help when called upon. This is the most organized Ross I have ever entered. Hands down the best one in the whole area. This location is large and they have a large selection of just about everything. I'm not sure what most of the other reviewers were expecting-- it's a Ross. But for a Ross, it's pretty good. Better-organized than most (though that's saying very little)-- but best of all, if you look really hard you can find some higher-end(-ish) brands. I've never seen Wacoal or Natori bras at any other Ross, most of whose lingerie racks top out at Delta Burke and "Lady Princess." And $5.99 for Kors Michael Kors shoes? $7.99 for Vince Camuto? You could do a lot worse. I have, at just about every other Ross in the area (Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bailey's Crossroads, etc.) Trust me, Old Town is as good as Ross gets. Look, no one goes to Ross looking for an upscale shopping experience. But I think it's reasonable to expect the store to have a decent selection and things that are actually worth buying. I have a theory that this is the Ross that gets sent the run-off items that no one bought from all of the other Ross's in the area. I shop at discount stores like Ross, TJ-Maxx & Marshall's all the time. Which is why I am always disappointed with this location. The inside is dirty and disorganized and the selection of clothing is bizarre. However, the home goods section is pretty good and I have bought a few nice things from there. But the clothing... The MASSIVE selection of women's business-casual-to-semi-formal dresses could be nice but most of the items are undesirable. The other racks of clothes (pants, jeans, skirts, sweaters, etc.) barely have any merchandise and what is there is not in style or seasonally appropriate. The shoe section is okay but not great. I did find a nice handbag there once and I go there to get cheap socks. I have been to this Ross many, many times which is why I can say that, while the clothing selection is just deplorable, the home goods & other sections are worth browsing. Chances are they have whatever random storage container or salt shaker you need and that it's sold at a good price. But please, please stay away from the clothes racks. read more

Came here in search of hiking socks, which I didn't really find per se. I found socks that could be used for hiking. Oh well, the organization of items within their "departments" is lacking. Some of the sizes were mixed in with other sizes. No biggie, since I always expect to really hunt when I'm in these types of stores. And hunting I did! I came away with a new hamper, some cutting boards, and ice cream scoop, and said socks. A very eclectic mix indeed, but at great prices! Had I more time, I'd peruse the dresses. Not the *worst* Ross I've ever been in. I didn't see any rats. The shelves are a wreck. Searching for anything means you're likely to be dirty and disappointed. They have a wide selection of pants hangars, which is what I went in for, so it wasn't a total disaster. OMG. Ew. That being said.... I always find myself there, because I work nearby. Its like a dirty magnet for my money. But, as another reviewer mentioned it reminds me of a thrift store, which i love. I do love a good bargain hunting adventure. Its also very helpful for buying gifts for scret santa time at work, or people you dont know that well. The part that is the scariest is check-out time. There is this lady that is always at the register, she's in her 50s or 60s, and she could very well be mildly retarded. They should find someone who is better capable of ringing up more than one item per minute. Also, shes really mean. If you ask her for help, and your not cashing out, and shes not "open" she just keeps telling you shes "not open". So, youre like: "Hi, Can you answer a question for me?" and shes all: "Im not open" and youre like: "ok....so what time are you closing Sunday?" her: " Im not open" you: " I dont care about you, what time is the store closed...er...not open on that day?" her: "Im not open" When shes not open, shes not open. Ooooooooookay. Whatever. Bring hand sanitizer. and possibly a portable shower of some sort if you decide to try something on....then wash it when you get home. read more

Pretty standard as far as Ross' go. This one is located in lovely Old Town and offers some nicer brands than I've seen at other stores. I think they tailor their merchandise based on the location and clientele. Anyways, it had a good selection of items and a good layout, which was nice since sometimes these stores get really overwhelming. I did notice that theft prevention seemed to be a big deal, and the manager I interacted with at the cash register was not exactly warm and inviting. I went to the Ross Dress for Less in Old Town Alexandra, VA - a very upscale neighborhood - on Saturday, June 12 around 3pm. I've been shopping at Ross for years, and it's no secret that there's better inventory in better neighborhoods. I've shopped there on and off for years, and enjoyed my finds for long periods of time. Unfortunately, while the stock was great - I found all sorts of Calvin Klein dresses that would have been perfect for day-to-evening, that store has taken a severe downturn in customer service. After about an hour of shopping, I brought a cart full of clothes to the dressing room to try on. Since I could only take in 8 at a time, I left my cart outside the dressing room - as I have been accustomed to doing for the last 20 years or so. When I came out, the dressing room attendant was gone, and so was most of my stuff. I saw a few pieces hanging on the rack. I asked the new dressing room attendant (an older Latina woman) what happened, and she replied, with a fairly nasty attitude, that she didn't know, that it wasn't her fault, and that it had nothing to do with her. She then proceeded to try to take more things out of my cart to hang up! I told her to stop taking my stuff, and tried to give her the clothing that I had tried on, but didn't want. She refused to take the clothing and walked away from me. I was so angry and frustrated, that I attempted to throw the clothes on one of the 8 empty carts taking up space that should have been cleared out for customers to leave their carts. Unfortunately, I missed and most of the clothes fell on the floor. She whipped around and accused me of throwing clothes at her! She then yelled to a line of customers (all white), "She's an animal!" I'm African-American, so I took this as a racist remark, which I am quite sure, she wouldn't dare apply to a white customer. She then ran to fetch two black security guards. They tried to tell me that I was only allowed to bring 8 items to the dressing room, and that there was no room for me to leave extra items off to the side (since obviously the empty carts were there to prevent that). So according to them, anything I left outside the dressing room was subject to be taken. I explained that in the 20 years I had been shopping in that store, this had never happened. They said that was the store policy, and that they couldn't hold up the line, and that I was free to go back on the floor and bring back 8 more items to try on! At that point, it was clear to me that these people were complete idiots, and that the store did not deserve my business, but, I decided to complain to the manager. Despite continuing interference from the security guards, who followed me to the front desk, and tried to interrupt me, I managed to explain to the manager what had happened, and that she had just lost a U$300-$400 sale. I suggested that she offer customer service training to her dressing room attendants. She was as shocked and appalled as I was, and left immediately address the situation. Unfortunately I never got an apology or an offer from her to rectify the situation, and needless to say the whole experience ruined my weekend. read more

The prices here are pretty good! The people weren't very helpful or attentive. Decent selection, but certainly less than like a tj max. They can be a bit hard on you if you try to return an item, but I think that's because of shoplifters and such, and you have to chose the right time to go to find items because if not it's like an old Thanksgiving Turkey, picked over and scarcely anything there. However, it's Christmas time now so I'll share one of my little secrets: Hidden within this decrepit looking Ross are some of the best shopping deals I've ever gotten. Chucks for $3. REAL Chucks, not knock offs. Kalvin Klein dress slacks for $15. Circulon cooking sets and pieces on sale for 20-50% of what they cost elsewhere. There's a ton of junk in here. Never go to this Ross in Old Town. Straight up draaaa-ma! I lost my composure after the store manager refused to accept the return of a plainly defective good after presenting her with the receipt. She didn't even inspect the item. Instead, she told me that I had to go to the manufacturer to resolve the issue. Even after I called corporate, the store manager still wouldn't grant the return. Hopefully the district manager will call me back, school the store manager on customer service and grant my return. No one should have to go through what I went through today! A total waste of time. In my profession, my time is money, so I will not be shopping here again if they don't resolve this issue for me. read more

I love the prices, which is why I come here, but the staff needs a serious attitude adjustment. I do not like places that are staffed with angry employees, and this place is full of them. The last time my husband and I were there we walked up to the counter on a very slow day and the woman at the check out slammed the hangers she had down and made a big scene all because she had to stop what she was doing and ring us up. This is a substandard Ross. It isn't as big and doesn't have as much of a selection as other Ross stores located further out in the suburbs. The men's section is especially bad: while Ross in general is mostly for women's clothing, most Rosses at least have a small men's section. The men's section at this Ross is just a few racks wide. Why do my wife and I go here all the time? Because it is within walking distance of our place and we don't have to drive here. (There's no parking, so definitely don't drive here). If you live in Old Town Alexandria, then this Ross is good enough for super basic needs, at least most of the time. But if you have a serious Ross need, you're going to have to drive to a better location than this one. And don't even think about going to this Ross if you live near a different Ross, odds are your local Ross is better. read more
