Buying waterproof shoes in Seattle, Washington... When I was walking in the dark to my niece's new apartment, I noticed that there were many puddles and some mud on the sidewalks. I didn't want wet shoes and socks, so I walked on the side of the road. It was still wet and slippery! Thinking that I needed rainboots or some better footwear, other than Sketchers, I searched for the nearest ROSS. Parking was challenging because this is Downtown. I did find a spot about a block away... eventually... after circling around three times or so... Like other reviews stated, there are Security personnel at the door and they do check receipts. I found the Women's Shoe Department easily and had a choice of olive green or black boots (which were $10 more than the olive pair and had a higher heel). I chose the more practical pair, paid, and asked the cashier to cut the tags off because I wanted to wear them immediately. Well, walking to the car was challenging because I got a bigger sized shoe. I walked back in my Sketchers and held the boots in my hand. I showed the Security personnel the boots and they let me grab a different size from the shelf and exchange the used boots for a smaller size. The clerk attached all of the tags back onto the larger sized boots and helped me remove the tags from the new pair. Yay! This is the worst Ross I've ever been to. They made us line up to enter the store and, like metering lights on the freeway, let customers enter every 30-60 seconds. I overhead another customer say it was to take photos of the customers entering the store, but I did not see a disclosure about this anywhere, so I don't know if this is true. They had 2 security guards at the front entrance, but there was barely any inventory left to protect. They should just close this store since it looked like it is already headed in that direction. read more

One of the worst Ross stores I have been to BUT it is in a difficult to navigate area with apparently high crime given that there are two security people at the door and they make you wait behind a rope just to enter. Not very well stocked with anything. Not well organized and not very friendly staff. Not many options for what they sell in that area so it would be great to upgrade the customer experience a little bit and stock the store better. read more

Ebony the manager, if that's her real name needs to learn how to do her job. First of all the store is an absolute mess, with items thrown all over the place. There was no employee by the dressing rooms so I walked into a dressing room with the one shirt I wanted to try on while my sister waited for me on bench outside the dressing room. All of a sudden I hear screaming and someone pounding on the dressing room door. Someone yelled at me to "Get out NOW!" My sister told the employee that I was trying on a shirt and the employee said it was closed and that I moved stuff to get to the dressing room. Which is not true. I didn't move anything to get to the dressing room. There was no "closed" sign or anything and considering the state of the messy store and having never been to this location how would I know it was closed. This employee yelled at my sister and called the security to escort us out and wouldn't let us buy anything. The security guard said this employee was the manager. How sad that this woman is managing anything with an attitude like that. read more

Situational awareness is required as you're approaching the area where this particular Ross is located. Once inside, you're immediately greeted by security(to let you know, that they have their eyes on the shoppers)In addition, SPD is either posted there as well, or they're called to that location quite a bit. Expect long lines with limited checkers. The line was at least 10 deep, a few days ago, with one checker. The good: you may find something on the cheap, from luggage to shower curtains and socks. The trek and outside of this location is sketchy and pretty disgusting. The downtown store entrance faces a busy bus stop with lotsa undesirables such as needles, trash, human waste reeking of grossness just making your skin crawl thinking about it all! Ugh..you wonder upon entry if the nastiness of outside is reflected within. Well, it's not. This location probably has the most security service and undercover employees just watching to ensure the safety of the ahem merchandise. I have been to a number of Ross stores and I think location has the cheapest merchandise with markdowns upon markdowns. It is possible the prices are lower because the draw of the crowd has less cash to spend and the location is sketchy upon approach. During the holidays the store was packed with gifts and brand name items such as Nike, Sephora like toiletries, Mercedes Benz cars, plush pillows, macadamia nut chocolates and other finds that would make fun stocking stuffers. The store is very clean and appears to be almost immaculate with employees constantly wiping and mopping. Post holidays the store is wiped out of merchandise with almost nothing on the shelves. Not sure why they are not stocking. Possibly items come in waves. Unfortunately I prefer not to stop by too often as the outside is a trial in itself upon approach. read more

When you shop at Ross, you know you're not getting the same selection and service as you would when you shop at Bloomingdale's. With that said, I enjoy coming here. I bought a Tommy Hilfiger dress for less than $20 and found a few pairs of shoes that I'd seen elsewhere for a lot more. All Ross's are pretty much the same, but I found the merchandise in this store to be more orderly than the Ross I shop at in Georgia. (At home shoes are generally thrown willy nilly on the rack, frequently lacking their mates. Not so here!) What I did notice in this branch: If you want your purchase bagged, it'll cost you a dime. I also encountered a few troubled souls shopping here. A toothless woman on line was slugging booze from a flask, while another patron, looking for a fight, engaged anyone who would listen to her -- including me. read more

This is terrible! I came to the store at 7:50 and was not allowed to enter. I didn't want to buy things today, I needed to see if there was a thing I needed here in order to buy it tomorrow. Because I try to save my time and not waste it! I'm leaving tomorrow! And I must understand, it makes sense to go to this store tomorrow or not! But, they didn't let me into the store and said that it was already closed! I took the time to come here, because Google Meps shows that the store is open until 8! Dirty!!!! A lot of things open, no inventory. Really pool layout and a lot of items missing. Skin care products is a joke. Disappointed

I wandered into Ross for a couple new things while in Seattle. I hardly shop, so I used the opportunity to try and find something I like for me and a gift for my guy. Since it was before Valentine's Day, I went with getting my guy a bottle of cologne and found something he would like. My only bother is that they don't have samples of their selections, so you don't really know what it smells like before you buy it. I just stuck to name brand and he loved it. I selected and picked out a couple things to try on. I head over to the dressing room and about to get my ticket when the girl helping me leaves the area, then the next lady gets totally distracted by another woman with a kid. Someone just help me please, I'm trying to purchase things.... I pick out my items to buy and head over to the registers. There are 4 checkers, but they have one line open. The woman in front of me has a full basket, so I asked the manager who was just standing there talking to the working employee if there was another line I could go to. She looks at me and said, well everyone is going to lunch. Wow, so I look to the line behind me and amazed that you would only have one back up for a busy Saturday afternoon. And I'm just thinking to myself...someone just help me please, I'm trying to purchase things!! Take my money. I almost lost the will to purchase my items and wanted to go, but another checker decided to post pone her lunch. I actually like Ross. You can find great deals here. However, my rating is based on my bad experience (multiple times) at this particular downtown store. The staff at the fitting room, no matter whenever I go in, like weekday, afternoons, weekends, mid-days, etc, and NO MATTER WHO IS ON THE SHIFT, they ALWAYS have an attitude, always. PERIOD. They always just give you an attitude like they do not want to be there and are disgusted with everyone who walks in and needs the fitting room. I do not want to come back ever again. Uggggggh!!!! Where do I start? This place just sucks. I guess my biggest problem is the set up. Upstairs is the clothes and shoes and downstairs is the candles, suitcases, housewares, and other things. Also if ya gotta pee, good luck. No bathroom in the store for customers, but I'm discovering that most stores downtown don't have bathrooms. This store is incredibly messy and disorganized, you have to be in a certain mood to shop here. I come here once in a while because you can find some gems here but you really HAVE to search for them. I would recommend shopping in the weekday because the weekends gets very crowded and chaotic. They do have great deals, its cheaper than Maxx but Maxx has better items. If you want to shop by price, start at Ross than move on to T.J.Max. I randomly found a marble-like table which was very affordable and stylish, it was a bit wobbly but that is expected from a store like Ross. Things are always slightly off. A lot of their clothes are "irregular" sizes, items are slightly defected but if you value a good deal and you have the time and energy to search for it, then I recommend Ross. I like to consider myself a Ross Diva. Any time I travel, I make a huge effort to visit the Ross in the city I'm in: Las Vegas, Oahu, Los Angeles, etc... What I've noticed, is they cater to the environment they reside in. My goal for walking into the Seattle Ross, was to find a jacket that would support the cold weather I wasn't prepared for. Walked out with a great Fila jacket, Reg. $150 for $50. I wore that sucker all weekend. My fiance' found a fun lumberjack hat for $9. Tons of boots in the shoe aisle. My analysis seems on point, they had what I needed for the environment it's set in. Out here in the Bay, the outerwear selection isn't the best. My reason for minus one star, is it felt like this Ross wasn't big enough. Wish they had more racks of clothing. read more

I'm going on a trip fairly soon and needed some last minute, super affordable accessories and whatnot. I walk in and was immediately greeted by the theft prevention guy and noticed the line...The line was very long and serpentine! I also noticed there were only 3 cashiers open! There were probably 40 ppl in line. I almost turned back around and left right then and there. I continued on and browsed for near an hour. I went to the fitting room and also grabbed a bag and some sunglasses. By the time I got to checkout, the line had died down to about 6 people! The employees were moving quickly and I appreciate it. I get my polar fleece sheets for a great price. $12.00 for a full size set! Ok, so they have little blue somethings(gnomes, fairies, elves, little man behind the counter at my drycleaner?) But for that price who cares? Great place to buy underwear in packages-Package for your package-wouldn't that make a great slogan? Maybe not; but they carry a pretty decent amount of doggy stuff and it's name brand. My beasts like AKC treats and they had them at a tremendous price, so next week, were having a dog brunch party. I forget I can find great things at Ross when Nordstrom, The Rack and bebe are not too far away. This place can have ridiculous lines or get disorganized, but if you know what you're looking for and have the patience to sort through clothes and shoes, it is rewarding when you find it. Just today, I managed to purchase a dress for a black and gold themed NYE party: a taupe Calvin Klein dress with black and gold sequence on the left shoulder for only $23. What a deal! I would have walked out with a black sequenced Marc Jacobs dress that was on clearance for $30 but sadly it was not in my size. Speaking of size, I find it difficult to find shoes I fall in love with in a size 7.5. There were a pair of DKNY wedge boots I was drooling over (on sale for $18. WTH) but alas they were in a size 6. Again, when I do finally find that pair that I fall in love with and is in a 7.5, it can be a rewarding experience. The clothing merchandise at this Ross seemed really sparse. It felt like I just walked in after a gigantic sale and we were left with the bottom of the barrel. I was rather unimpressed with the wares here. There were very few small dresses here (0-2, XS) - so I could barely find anything here. However, I am upgrading my review to 3 stars due to the downstairs housewares sections. This is like a jackpot right here for stuff like bedding, cutting boards, and drinking glasses. My boyfriend did manage to pick up an Island Bamboo cutting board for like $6, score! I found this nice Esprit Home comforter set for like $32 (what a steal) and a set of bedsheets (FOR A QUEEN BED) for $16. So yeah, I do come to Ross now but only for the downstairs. read more

I did a return at Ross with my receipt and was paid back the wrong amount. They shorted my return by $40. When I came back with my receipts to have the adjustment made the manager refused to refund me the rest of my money because she said it wasn't me on the camera. First of all the refund was going to go back to my card so it didn't matter who physically came in the store and did the refund because it was going to go back to my card no matter what. Secondly the security guard that was working that day was also working the day I did the initial return and she remembered me and told the manager that. And finally, her demeanor and attitude was the exact opposite of customer service. She was rude, condescending, dismissive, and did I mention rude. I took my issue to corporate headquarters and even though I called and emailed numerous times never once had anybody from corporate respond back to me. After a couple weeks of badgering corporate someone from the store finally called me and told me I could come in and get what I was owed. I never spoke to anybody from corporate even though I requested many times to have somebody contact me and I never once received an apology for the way I was treated or for the colossal waste of time forced upon me to pursue this just to get the money that was rightfully owed to me. I will never again shop in a Ross dress for less and I will share my story with everybody I can in hopes that they don't shop there anymore either. These days companies have decided that they can treat us regular folks anyway they want and that way apparently is with a complete lack of customer service. I'm tired of being treated like crap because I'm not rich. Because if I was rich you can believe that the customer service would be way better. That actually would be a form of discrimination and I wonder if I could sue.? Something to think about. Actually let's everybody sue. Ross and I have a long history and I usually don't like to talk about it; it's a sore subject. Most people my age either malign Ross entirely or pretend they don't know Ross, but I'm not afraid. Those postmodern futuristic letters of pure azure have been a part of my life ever since my frills-are-for-families-with-functioning-fathers lower-middle-class mother gave me the choice of a) buying one thing from the brand name department store or b) buying three things from some guy who specializes in misshapen, oblong, factory rejects that are two years démodé. I always went with option A, but somehow, my mother would always 'miss' the exit for the mall and we'd end up at Ross Dress For Less. I swear, she must have paid the liquidation costs of Generra Hypercolor alone with the amount of out-of-spec neon pink t-shirts I demanded. I was the proud owner of two Mexican Baja jackets, not just one, because Ross piled 'em high like cornhusks too gristly for ethanol. Truly, Ross is a corporate expression of the postmodern crisis. Someone forgot to tell their design department (ha!) that Kathie Lee was dropped from the Regis masthead a decade ago, and that white horizontal stripes scream "Massengill" and not "Mossimo". But Ross has to be loved for its American exceptionalism - the audacity of trying to line up XXXL pink lady negliges in a straight line is quite frankly a sign of madness. Yet we keep on buying. The thought of having to work there makes me almost avoid it - can you imagine what loss prevention, or inventory management, or god forbid, vendor relations must be like? The secret to Ross' success is that they who work for Ross must cherish the madness - they know things get stolen and how people steal them, they know exactly what they're doing when they price an untagged pair of underwear lower than they really sell for, they know the staffing roster is designed to create the long lines, not eradicate them. You see, Ross is a sham, an intentional, profitable sham, and that's why I love it. The factories make 'irregular' clothing on purpose in order to hedge their large-scale investments in raw fabric - this allows them to maintain high margins at Macy's while benefiting from the economy of scale. It also allows them to have a more flexible margin of error for quality control. Ross is entirely complicit in its role as well - it takes these unwanted unmentionables and scatters them in a drab, outdated linear framework, with narrow aisles and awkward merchandising priorities (why are the dishes and pots and heavy things down where it's hard to bring a shopping cart?). It does this on purpose to give you the image of the last-chance bazaar, to make you feel rewarded for hunting through 8 XXXL's to find the M. And how bazaar it is - there are a lot of freaks who hang out at the downtown location. But there are also the best finds - I have pretty much developed an entire underwear fetish based on the fact that $30 designer units often go for $5. Open my bureau drawer and you'd think "gosh this dude spends a lot of money on socks and underwear", but to them I say, "Do you love it? I love it! I got it at ROSS." In short, Ross is about knowing the strategy, the rationale, and coming prepared to outwit them. Bring a book, bring your iPod, leave your claustrophobia and embarrassment behind, and get used to fighting with 4'9" immigrant ladies for the last pair of god knows what. This Ross store is dirty, cramped, sometimes smells suspicious, and can be a pain to sort through. But it also has a fabulous selection of dresses (especially work appropriate ones), good shoes, and fantastic deals on handbags and suitcases. If you're the type who already enjoys thrifting and bargain hunting, you probably won't mind. If Nordstroms and a personal shopper is more your style, steer clear. Yes, there typically is a crazy long line for checkout. However, I've found that the crazy long line does a splendid job of preventing buyer's remorse. My thought process tends to go something like this before I dare buy anything at the 3rd Ave Ross: "Oh my god, I don't want to stand in that line." "But if I don't stand in that line, I don't get the shirt." "And it's a cute shirt." "Do I really need it?" "I always need more work clothes." "But do I want to stand in line for 15 minutes?" "Of course not. But is this SHIRT worth 15 minutes worth of my time?" At which point, the shirt is either put back on the rack or I put myself through the pain of standing in line, knowing that yes, this item of clothing is well worth the bother I took to get it. read more

I've found Hobo International purses, Vince Camuto purses,Calvin Klein clothing, Bebe clothing, Keen Shoes, Hush Puppies Shoes, Clark Shoes, Anne Klein Shoes, Fossil accessories, Spanx products, luggage, and more. The prices blow my hair back. I'm giving Ross 5 stars based on the deals I find. Let me be clear: this low score is not for the Ross chain, but for this specific location. I generally like Ross Stores (where else can you find new items of clothing for $3.49?), and I'm not a snob about where I shop - but this place is frightening. Once, I found human feces in the dressing room. At least, I assume it was human, because there was a handprint smearing it all over the wall. Another time I was walking along third, and this guy ran out of Ross with his hands full of clothes. He had just grabbed everything off a rack and ran out. As he did so, a vinyl coat fell at my feet. He looked at me and said, "Want a jacket?" before tearing down the street. Uh, no thanks. (Seriously, why anyone would steal from Ross is beyond me. You can't resell that stuff. Your girlfriend/wife/fellow junkie probably doesn't want 8 of the same shirt. So what's the motivation?) Almost 3 Stars for Ross, let's say 2.5. I rarely go to Ross, even though I walk past it almost every day. Like everyone else says, it's filthy and disorganized, it stinks in there and the lines are usually too long to justify what you are purchasing (and once in a awful combination of the two last factors, it literally smelled like poop near the registers). I've given up shopping for clothes here. There aren't any designer markdowns. It's just cheap crappy clothes sold for real cheap. I've seen more than one shoplifter get arrested out front. Why would you try to steal anything from this place? Hope jail was worth that $3.99. But I have found a few steals at Ross, so I suggest perusing: -- Housewares. The stuff is actually from good stores/brands and marked down. Bedding probably worth looking at too. -- Luggage. Last year I got an awesome suitcase for at least half off the original price. (I'd skip handbags though) -- Shoes. Sometimes. Got one of my fav pairs of Steve Madden heels for $20. But like the clothing, alot of it is cheap crap. -- Kids clothes. No need to spend alot of money on something they'll grow out of or ruin in a few days/weeks/months. When they're young they don't know any better. Backpacks too. -- Socks. Why not? You can always use more socks. I find Ross to be a bit of a disappointment, especially compared to the real deals you can get on name brand clothing at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Poor selection of sizes (not much at all S or M), poor fashion selection, no noticeable rotation in stock, poor quality activewear selection. I wonder if they go out of their way to put their worst stock where the lower-class and tourists are bound to pick up some crap for their kids while they're shopping in the area, but if you're a resident and looking for something cheap and relatively wearable, you're out of luck. I did pick up some cheap knockoff converse socks 6 for 7$, however I couldn't find anything decent. It would be nice if there was something better than this, and cheaper than Nordstrom Rack, maybe we'll have to wait for the Target to open. read more

I'd like to give this Ross a higher rating since I shop in here often. I just can't though. Ross is never my go to place to shop for clothes and such, but they have such great bargains, when I'm downtown with some time to kill, I always stop in to see what's new. The housewares and seasonal stuff are especially affordable. Seriously, bedding or dress shirts are so cheap compared to comparable items just a few blocks away at higher end retailers. I almost always find something so affordable I have to buy it unless I don't feel like waiting for... THE LONGEST CHECK OUT LINES EVER! This place is seriously horrible when it comes to check out. There are rarely more then 2 check stands open at a time. You're also lucky if the card reader is working that day. Half the time it's broke. One day the week after Christmas I needed to exchange an item. It was busy, yes, but I ended up in line for 35 minutes! I know the place is a little rough around the edges. It could be cleaner and more put together, but what do you expect? It's a discount department store on the corner of 3rd and Pike downtown! The deals are too good to pass up most times. read more
