The park has a playground, pickle ball court with friendly players who are always look for people to play, and a basketball court. Walk through the field and follow the dirt path until you see a set of steep stairs to the top. Check out the views of CSULB and then head north on Panorama Dr. The end of this street will lead you to the Signal Hill trail that takes you to Hill Top Park. The Signal Hill trail has great views of the Long Beach Airport. Once you're at Hill Top Park, on a clear day you'll have beautiful views of downtown Long Beach, the port, and the Queen Mary. A great location to have lunch. After a break, cross the street and take Skyline Trail to Ridge Trail. Ridge Trail will end on 21st Street where you'll go east and then make a left on Stanley and a right on Hill St. You're basically going to circle back to youre starting point. Some parts of the last two trails will have you going through a residential area. The trails are public. Definitely a walk worth checking out!

There's a little lake in the middle…read moresurrounded by tons of ducks and geese, which makes it feel peaceful and a little lively at the same time. The park has big shady trees, plenty of grass to hang out on, walking paths, and a playground. There are also courts if you're into tennis or basketball. It's a solid place to relax, walk the dog, or just watch the ducks waddle around.

It was an overcast Sunday down by the marina where the Coastal Country Jam Festival was being held…read more There was photo ops around the way as well as vendors both food and clothes spread out across the way. They also had alcoholic samples to try with being able to purchase the drinks right there and some free prizes to win around the festival. I got a strawberry lemonade as well as some potato chip stack with garlic parm as a little snack for the day. I brought my sis with as my plus one for winning the tickets and we enjoyed the day with live music and dancing. We were able to bring in chairs so we found a good spot in GA area to watch the performs. My fav of the night was Maren Morris and Tim McGraw. They also did a drone show in the sky at night before bringing out Tim. It was a fun filled but long day down in Long Beach at the festival but we made every minute count.

There are two tennis courts here, with lights allowing for nighttime play. There is also a small skate park. Alas, neither were being used...in fact, there were hardly any children around, even on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon.

While the soccer pitch is…read morelocated "across the street" Drake Park, we could not seem to find access to the lower field from Loma Vista, and made a left on Chester and another left in DeForest to access the small lot for the "Drake/Chavez Greenbelt Park." Assuming this is all part of the Drake Park proper, but it took a little intuition to find the entrance for our first visit. And still, the parking lot is small, filled with litter, human waste, and lots of broken auto glass... And it's about a 200 yard walk to the entrance of the artificial turf soccer field. Much of the human detritus in the parking lot is likely attributed to the considerable homeless population that is evident in the immediate area: dozens of people were camped out just across the street, in the dirt lot area adjacent to the river channel. That same dirt lot is variably covered with piles of demolition construction materials haphazardly dumped by who knows who? In pure defiance of posted signs prohibiting dumping. Other "unhoused Angelinos" seem to be wandering about the park, utilizing senses beyond my standard five (sight, smell, taste, hearing, and feeling) to experience things I can only imagine.... and a couple had set up camp in the park's landscaping adjacent to the walking path. Not so much unsafe as much as unsanitary This part of the park features what appears to be some kind of community garden - - locked and secured behind 10 foot chain-link fences. there is a public park restroom with only 2 of the 8 single seater stalls unlocked, and both are horrific inside. Some beautiful wall murals are marred by tagging. Much of the park here is adjacent to industrial yards, and most of the bordering landscape is littered with garbage. The soccer field is actually quite beautiful: artificial turf field with a perimeter fence. I laughed a little bit at the idea that this was a "green belt" and the soccer field was artificial turf... But there is certainly some actual real grass field in this park, and some California native plants along the periphery. So I guess that counts in the midst of This residential-industrial interface. The air was pretty heavy with the smell of oil refinery and low tide from the nearby river channel, which was probably a bigger deal to the soccer players than it was to me as a spectator. A generous three stars for the really nice soccer field and the fact that my truck windows weren't added to the considerable collection of broken auto window glass on the ground in the parking lot. My only other Long Beach Park frame of reference is Bluff Park, so I can confidently say this is nicer.... relative, though, that comparison is...

For the past four years, I've driven by Somerset Park without giving it more than a glance. It's…read moreon the way to my Walmart, restaurants, and Long Beach Exchange for me. However, since I've discovered pickleball, I've visited a few times now. It turns out to be a great park! I love seeing all the dog-walkers with various pups strolling around this small park. There is a playground, and kids are nearly always playing on it. Don't let this deter you, though, because it's typically fewer than five kids! There are basketball courts behind the tennis/pickleball courts, and I've always seen only one half-court game going at a time. I'd like to bring my soccer ball out here for a day to just kick the ball around, though I did not see any goals up. I don't play tennis, so I've only used the courts for pickleball on Wednesdays or Thursday. They're great! You can fit four pickleball courts on a single tennis court, and the community here is generally welcoming. I've mostly met kind people who have taken it easy on a novice player like myself. The open-play system here is mix and match, and I've found it much easier to play here without knowing anyone. Fun times! This is a small park with street parking available. It is bordered by three small streets and one busy street (Carson). Otherwise, Somerset is a great, quaint park. Come check it out!

Of course, you can park in the neighborhood also but we decided to walk toward this little trail after we were done with the lagoon. Field of small flowers and bushes, trees and large rocks, sit and relax.

Holly T. requested this review, so here it is!…read more The Greenbelt used to be the right-of-way for the Pacific Electric Red Car--that superb system of public transportation that connected Long Beach, LA, Orange Coutny, and even San Bernardino. The rail system was destroyed back when people thought it would be best if everyone drove everywhere instead. So this patch of land was a vacant lot for decades, until it got turned into a park in 2004. Other parks in Long Beach, like Orizaba Park, have similar histories, but the Greenbelt is special in that it is dedicated to native habitat, rather than active recreation. The thin strip of land is landscaped with plants typical of coastal sage-scrub--the habitat that used to cover most of southern California prior to rapid urbanization. Only 10% of this habitat type remains, so even small patches like the Greenbelt are important for wildlife. The common plants include different kinds of sages, as well as sage brush. All have wonderful aromatic leaves. Some great wildflowers, like poppies, penstemons, and buckwheats add eye-catching color, and are attractive to butterflies and birds. The path meanders, splits, and rejoins itself as you walk between 7th and 8th streets. The tall shrubs and winding paths make the park seem much larger than it actually is. The paths are made of woodchips, which joggers seem to appreciate. Because the park is in such a developed area, litter is a major problem. Some times it's small pieces of garbage. But some truly cretinous people use it as a dumping ground. I called the Parks Department (562-570-6555) to get them to remove a couch some a-hole left. Other parts of the former railway (such as the section between 7th and 5th streets) could be greatly improved if they expanded the restoration in these areas.
