I absolutely love Indian food and I eat a lot of it. Right off the bat, the food here is mediocre. I usually get food here when I'm craving Indian food but don't want to drive 30 minutes away to Irving. They have the typical North Indian food including Naan, rotis, tandoori and different curries. Everything tastes fine and I'm full after but if I wanted good Indian food this would not be my first option at all. It is a self service, pseudo fast food restaurant. You can do take out or order and sit down and your food will be brought to you. There's lots of parking outside and seating inside. They have regular and Texas size portions, I think the regular is more than enough. It is more on the pricey side but I guess I'm paying for the convenience of driving 6 min instead of 30 min. read more

I have been here a few times and as of my recent visit I should say honestly the quality and quantity have come down. I still love the food and the ambiance. The people working there are super nice and the food is served piping hot. Do try the samosa combos and if you don't like spicy request spice level lower than medium hot. Ordered the same as my previous review: Texas sized chicken masala. I love the masala here. If you order spicy, it really is "heartburn-later-spicy." Love that since many Indian restaurants will dilute it down for Americans (blah hate that). The chicken was white meat chicken chunks, expected as is typical. And appreciated. Naan gets rubbery and chewy texture if left in the foil too long, so air that baby out ASAP. Basmati rice: still disappoints with more yellow food coloring than flavor. Other Yelpers were complaining about staff: I thought they were pretty straight forward. Not the big smiley Texan kind of friendly, but East Coast friendly: "here's your meal. Thanks. I really, really, really like Roti grill. Like, REALLY, REALLY like. I would tell it I'm in love with it, but I think that's moving a little fast and would scare it off. So I'm going to say I'm half in love with it. Have I had better Indian food? Yes. Absolutely. But have I had Indian food of this quality so conveniently located (not counting my roommate's food)? No. It's 7PM, it's winter, and I don't want to drive all the way to Irving. I want food NOW. Things that are great--I like the casual atmosphere. I like that you can come here for a quick bite to eat, or you can make it more of an hour ordeal if you really want to. The waitstaff don't care, and will fill your glasses accordingly. I like the portions. Yes, things are expensive-ish, but, look, I'm paying 15 dollars to get a vegetable side dish, a meat dish, naan/roti, rice, and a small dessert. Sure, they're small portions, but I'm still super stuffed by the end of it. WORTH IT. And that's only if you get the lamb/chicken/whatever platter, which are a little more expensive. My husband & I met my daughter and her boyfriend at Roti Thursday evening. First, I like the laid back casual look of the place. It was pretty busy @ 6:PM. We started the Supper off with a couple of Super good Pear Margarita's...I know it's weird, who'd think this place would be serving margaritas? I'll look forward to one of those again, next time. There was a little boy drinking a Mango Lassi that looked so good...I've got to try one of those next time, as well. 3 of us ordered the Chicken Masala (creamy tomato herb sauce) Medium heat, with Basmati Rice, and a basket of Garlic Naan. This is a great example of how to package ethnic food in a neighborhood that thinks fish tacos are exotic. They feature a clean, naturally lit atmosphere, an explanatory menu and -- awww, they even have "Texas-sized" portions! You just gotta have Texas-size if you're gonna be in Texas, folks. You order at the front -- like a Pei Wei. Roti Grill features lots of Indian classics like Vindaloo, Masala and different curries. Then you choose your meat from choices like lamb, beef, chicken and shrimp, which sit on a bed of yellow Basmati rice. Finally, you choose your size. They have some other dishes though I must admit, I've never tried them. Their sauces are great. "Green and red sauce, please!" That's all you gotta say. They're free and are great for dipping na'an bread. Oh -- their na'an is amazing. I'm secretly hoarding a stockpile in my freezer -- you know, for when the apocalypse happens? When the end of times comes, I think their na'an might be worth more than gold. I will trade it like currency. Be sure to try the raita sauce, which is similar to a Greek tziziki sauce. It's made of yogurt and cucumbers among other things. Also try the crab cakes and the meat pies! Everything I've tried, I've liked. My office and my family all get take-out orders from Roti at least once a week. I don't recommend it for lunch unless you want your coworkers to find out what your ass smells like after you destroy the bathroom about thirty minutes after eating. The only other downside I can think of is that their service is kind of hard to understand and a bit disinterested in their customers. But obviously their job is just to process your order and bring you your food. You're on your own after that. This is a great place to introduce somebody to some great Americanized Indian food. This is the first one-star review I have ever given on Yelp. I take one-star review seriously, so I want to lay out the story-- sorry about the length. My husband has a severe nut allergy, so the onus is on him to inform restaurants and to ask about menu items beforehand. Here is what happened at Roti Grill. He ordered a mango lassi, but did not ask whether it would contain nuts. (We did not realize that sometimes mango lassi is served with grounded nuts on top.) When he received the lassi, he noticed the grounded nuts. At this point, of course, it was not the restaurant's fault-- there was no way they could have known about his allergy. My husband asked whether the drink contained nuts, and explained his allergy. His server confirmed that there were nuts in the drink, took it away, talked with her manager, and brought back a new drink without nuts. Great service, no problem at all. Right after this, my husband ordered a chicken masala, which typically comes in a tomato-based sauce. In this case, however, the server did not say anything. Keep in mind, this is literally a few minutes after everyone just had the conversation about my husband's nut allergy. Long story short, the server (who knew that my husband had a severe nut allergy, not only because he TOLD her, but because she literally had to adjust his drink and talk to her manager about it) brought my husband a dish with nuts and watched him bite into it. At that point he had an allergic reaction, asked her if there was nuts in the sauce, and she said yes. Look, I believe that one of the most fundamental requirements of a restaurant is knowing what is in its food. People have all sorts of dietary restrictions. A restaurant is not responsible for knowing the nuances of each person until or unless that person makes it known. But once that person makes it known, the restaurants should not just ignore that. Not doing so could seriously jack up a person's health or conscience. If you are a vegan, a vegetarian, gluten-free, kosher, halal, suffer from food allergies, or have any other dietary restrictions or preferences, I would suggest that you eschew this restaurant. Even if you tell your server about your restriction, you might find yourself eating something you don't want to eat. The food is not that good, anyway. Shivas is better, go there. BRING ON THE HEAT, BABY! Aficionados of my reviews know that I have a certain penchant for "Hole-in-the-Wall" restaurants that exemplify the best and most entertaining foods the area has to offer. Roti Grill is not one of them, only because I don't believe it meets the third criteria of a good "Hole-in-the-Wall". Hard to find? Check! Noteworthy food? Check! Local institution ... not quite yet. The Roti Grill may have lots of fans, but there are not enough people (in my opinion!) willing to sacrifice their home loan obligations - or the soul of their first male child - in defense of the Roti Grill's existence. There are no legions of rabid, screaming devotees, high on the liqueur of their own all-consuming passion for this restaurant. Maybe a company or a battalion's worth, sure, but not an army. That said, Roti is a great lunching hole that generally caters to the business-casual crowd. It's clean, modern, cafeteria-esque in nature, and has quick turnover - you can be in & out, gut-stuffed & happy, in under thirty. Forty-five minutes if you choose to linger and "smell the marigolds". The Roti Grill is a block down from Chuy's. On the map it seems to "face" McKinney, but in reality it faces 75. Best approach is to head south on the service road by 75 and take a right on Armstrong (cuts two strip malls in half). Roti will be diagonally to your left. GO EARLY. This whole area fills up with office workers (guilty!) looking for a quick lunch between reinventing paradigms and strategy meetings on outsourcing jobs to Ulan Bator. Parking is limited, so you really want to arrive between 11 and 11:30 for lunch, or you will be doomed to an eternity of circling the lot, hunting for an open space that you will never find. Make friends with the other doomed suckers in the holding pattern - call your Momma, text your buddies, check your Blackberry - it will be a long while before your feet rest once more on gentle earth. Don't be deceived by all the wide open spaces that surround you - parking is very limited in this part of town. Demand seriously exceeds supply during peak hours. So, the stores are very jealous of their retail property and guard their allotted parking spots with the enthusiasm of zealots on acid. These guys are vigilant and will pop a cap in your tailpipe BEFORE calling tow central to pull your ride. Make sure you are parking in an authorized zone! The food at Roti is first-class. These guys really know their curries. Every bite is alive with a thousand different flavors. A hundred spices blended into a single fusion of mouth-watering complexity. You can't go wrong with any of the curries. Go "Texas"-sized for a portion big enough for two. Best of all, Roti is legit, with authenticity in spades. There are items on the menu here that you won't see in many other Indian restaurants throughout the metroplex. Papadum, pickled mango, jalfarezi, daal maharani, and a dozen other things I've never eaten before and cannot describe. Plenty of adventure in the offing for those willing to take the plunge and be different. But what really makes Roti stand out from the crowd is that it's one of the few establishments in DFW that offers food worthy of seasoned fire-eaters. Love hot, super-spicy food? Food that bites back like a rabid terrier? Food that burns, even when cold? Food that might be used in various riot-control applications? I was excited to check out Roti Grill after moving to the Knox Henderson area since I could walk and (hopefully) have wonderful Indian food whenever I wanted. What a disappointment! During my first visit I went with Spinach Lamb Masalaa and of course, a side of naan. More than 10 bites into my meal, I noticed a giant, long, black hair in the middle of the food. GAG! When I flagged down one of the employees to let them know there was hair in the food he didn't even look that surprised. He returned the dish to the kitchen and brought back another in an uncomfortably short amount of time but obviously my appetite was gone. I would have preferred being offered a refund or even an apology. I know this thing happens but it shouldn't. Authentic or not, I can't say. But I do know yum when I taste it. The bf and I split the Texas size paneer jalfarezi and it's the perfect amount (he eats like a hungry hungy hippo, and I (apparently) don't eat enough to stand up w/o falling over). It's always empty at dinner time, so I've never had problems with service. Splitting the Texas size between two people means we eat for less than $10 a person. I don't get why people like this place. My BF is Indian and he refuses to eat here and after 3 attempts I gave up as well. I got tired of the crappy food and feeling gross after eating here. I suppose if you don't have a lot of experience with Indian food then you would think it's okay but there's too much butter, cream and oil in the food in my opinion. I guess you could say it's "Americanized" but I want real Indian food, not the McDonald's version. I find the quality of Roti Grill strange because I believe the owners also own India Palace (LBJ and Preston) and that is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Dallas (along with Kebab & Curry in North Dallas and Cosmic Cafe near Uptown). Unfortunately there aren't as many Indian restaurants in Dallas as I wish there were so the choices are rather spread out. It depends on how far you're willing to drive. I'm no expert on Indian food, but I go to Roti fairly often and it's always delish. I've taken my friends and both my parents there, i.e., a wide variance of tolerance to food that isn't standard fare, and everyone loves it. The menu allows you to mix and match sauces with meat/ veggies/ cheese, so if you're, say, a vegetarian (in Texas? what?!), you have options, which is awesome in a state where even the salads have meat at a LOT of restaurants. Another plus- the hot is HOT. A word about the pricey-ness, I always end up with leftovers (and I can put it away), so it's like getting two meals. Overall- much yum! read more

Indian cuisine has always been on my radar but it hasn't been until the last couple of years, as I've sampled more and more, that is has become one of my favorite types of cuisines. We were trying to decide for a quick weeknight meal and having a bit of trouble before finally agreeing upon Roti Grill. I'd never actually eaten at Roti even though it's just a couple of blocks from my house. In a fast-casual setting, Roti is ordered at the counter and delivered to your table. For most of the entrees they have a regular and "Texas" sized portion. I opted for the "Texas-sized" portion of the Chicken Masala (basic, I know!) fearing that it was going to be huge. The term Texas implies large, at least to me. However, the portion was actually quite average but it did include naan. For the price however, it was a pretty small portion. The Chicken Masala was pretty good with a good kick of spice (I opted for Medium spice) and the Naan was hot and fresh. The service was a bit slow and for a "fast-casual" restaurant, the prices were pretty steep. Entrees here are $11-14 on average. And while I did fall head over heels for Roti Grill, it wasn't a total bust and if I'm in the mood for Indian in close proximity to home, I'll certainly consider heading back to Roti. read more

I have always been on a hunt for some good briyani rice specially with lamb. That's how we do it in Singapore. Roti Grill sure met the expectation. As an Asian, I thought I can take the Hot, but their hot is a killing. Had to take a notch down to Medium hot. You won't really enjoy if your mouth starts burning and not feel the flavor. The decor is simple and clean. The only thing is that it is quite pricey for a simple Indian food. $12.95 for a lamb briyani is indeed costly for me. If I can pay a good seafood lo mien at Pei Wei for $7, they could at least take it down to less than $10 for that. I guess, if you can't find a good briyani anywhere - you deserve to charge them your way! read more

Returned to Roti today only to blown away by the Chicken Vindaloo again. Literally, blown away. The spice was insane and unlike other spicy capacities to which I am accustomed. It sent my body into spicy shock. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious and I couldn't get enough of it, but I was incapable of doing anything for the rest of the day, because the spice was so powerful. If you are not familiar with spicy shock - it goes a little something like this: abnormal sweating, abnormal speech, abnormal thinking, abnormal stomach sounds, and most importantly abnormal feelings in your mouth, a.k.a your taste buds are numbed from the spice. The chicken was tender, the rice was al dente but not too tough, and the naan was moist and baked to perfection. Would I have this dish again? You bet. I do recommend the Chicken Vindaloo every time, but maybe the extra spicy level in moderation. The service is always speedy and polite, and the restaurant is always squeaky clean. The owners have become overly proud of themselves. The prices continue to increase while they lessen the quantity and quality. The very nice cashier had to ask the manager if I could get half vegetable and half paneer (cheese). He said no because "they" don't allow. I had to press him for who is "they." He finally confused it is the owners. The dishes are the same price -- $9.50. I get the paneer dish home and it only a small amount of tiny cubes of cheese in the sauce and the cheese isn't that good. Paneer is usually large cubes of cheese and this is the poorest quality cheese I have tasted. The paneer here used to be good. The place also wants to charge $1.25 for less than one once of chutney and other condiments! I have eaten some great Indian places, including in London. This place would not last one week in London. This neighborhood will welcome a good, quality Indian restaurant. This place is a sad excused for a Indian restaurant. I have been going off and on here since it open a few years ago and has always focused on the sauces instead of the proteins and substance of the dishes. Most people here are acting like food snobs, not realizing that the Dallas area has plenty of great Indian places...mostly in Irving, Richardson and Plano. I used to frequent this place when I worked in uptown. The Chicken Masala with spiciness level of hot would hit the spot when I was jonesing for some indian food. I love how when I order food to go from here its always piping hot, from the curry to naan. But like what plagues other Indian restaurants, this restaurant suffers from inconsistency and less than generous portion sizes for the price you pay. It would have been four stars but those two factors knocked it down to three stars for me. DISCLAIMER: The chicken masala is NOT chicken TIKKA masala. Chicken tikka masala involves cooking the chicken in tikka marinade first and then mixing it in the gravy. This chicken is plain chunks of chicken cooked in a delicious gravy, which is probably why they call it chicken masala. Whatever it is I could eat that sauce itself with plain rice, naan, roti, pasta, on tacos, on burritos, with chips, with veggies, id even eat it off of my arm. Yum. I love how it doesn't have any hint of sweetness in the flavor profile, rather its delicious robust garlic flavor with indian spice and herbs. Sometimes when I eat chicken tikka masala at other restaurants I can taste the canned tomato flavor which brings with it the sweetness that does not belong in a dish like this. Roti grill does it right - er most of the time. I have tried the chicken saag and chicken vindaloo, which were all pretty good, but the chicken masala has a special place in my heart. The naan is really soft and always served fresh, and I would just stick to regular naan. The garlic naan can be good, but its hit or miss and not worth the upcharge in my opinion. Don't bother with appetizers - I have had their veggie samosas, lamb samosas, and aloo tikki and all were subpar. Like I mentioned before, this place is a little overpriced for what you get, with a regular sized Chicken Masala and naan running you about 12-13 bucks. I have been to the Plano location many a times but for some reason its just not the same as the uptown location. The flavors are much bolder and fresher at this location. Ok so I liked this place well enough the first time to return twice, but this most recent time I felt a little screwed. I ordered a chicken tikka wrap. What I expected was their delicious fluffy naan wrapped around pieces of chicken tikka with the creamy masala sauce, with some vegetables like onions, peas, etc. Maybe it's my fault. I asked about the vegetables part, and the guy said yes there were indeed veggies, but maybe I should have asked him point blank what was in it. 1) Yes, the naan holding the wrap together was delicious 2) NO masala sauce! 3) Instead it was filled with seasoned chicken, veggies, and CHEESE!!! Like quesadilla cheese!!! This is not cheese you are supposed to find in an indian dish!! I was incredibly disappointed. I didn't realize I was ordering a poorly executed fusion dish. Granted, I've had a similar style wrap at Masala Wok before I really got into Indian food, and I liked it, but they definitely had the masala sauce to tie it all together. On the plus side, the biryani, soups, and daal are good, but I don't think the menu is very patron friendly. Not enough description, and it's hard to put together a cheap meal for yourself if you want something small that's not fried (like all of their appetizers). If you want a bigger meal, I suggest going to a more authentic Indian spot, but it's definitely not bad and I'd probably go back and just make sure I know what I'm ordering first. read more

So, after almost three decades of being on this earth, I finally figured out how much I LOVE Indian food. In my defense, I'm pretty sure I didn't like it when I was younger, but somehow my tastebuds have morphed to be deliciously more sophisticated, and now I enjoy all sorts of wonderful Indian dishes! And while nothing beats a hole in the wall for authenticity, not much beats this place for convenience. It's close enough to downtown that I can easily make it there for a weekday lunch and back with time to spare (even if I dine in). The only thing I've gotten here so far is the Chicken Vindaloo, which I was told is basically the best thing ever. I of course, did not heed the warning of other yelpers who mentioned that the extra hot vindaloo is really effing hot. I mean, not that I don't trust you guys but it kinda looks like a Chipotle in there - how hot could it be, really? (Note of context: When I order Thai food, I have to tell them extra, extra, extra spicy, then repeat it 4 times to make sure they know I wasn't just kidding, and then it's still never spicy enough.) This Vindaloo was bananas, yo. SPICYYYYY! Eyes watering. Nose running. I must have filled up my soda 4 times. But I could NOT stop eating it. That delicious sea of meat and devilish hot Vidaloo sauce is burned in my memory, and my esophagus. Oh, and on an even better note, I found (somewhat by accident) that it's is also, quite literally, a magical hangover cure. I suppose when you're sweating garam masala and cayenne out your pores, any latent alcohol goes with it. BONUS!!!! I got the Texas size, mainly because I wanted Naan but also because I wanted leftovers. At a little over $15 I was a tad fussy with the price (that included the soda I sucked down like a camel), but it was 100% worth it...that platter made me 3 VERY decent sized meals. 3 meals! I guess I knew what I was getting into after I read numerous reviews on Yelp, but I thought I would still give this place a chance. Maybe it's just me, but I thought it was kind of strange that there were no actual Indian people working there. I ordered the papad, chicken tikka tandoori, and aloo gobi. -I thought the papad was a little stale tasting. -The chicken was a little dry. This entree came with a side of rice and a sauce of my choice (which I chose masala) -The aloo gobi was pretty good. They used a little too much oil, but I guess that's to be expected with "fast food." Another large side of rice came with this even though I didn't really need it. The chicken dish also came with one large piece of naan. When I got home and opened the foil, the naan looked torn up. I don't know what they did to it, but it didn't look great. Roti Grill can be the best of times, and it can be the worst of times. The Best - The servings are generous (I have always had enough leftovers for a second meal from a single order) and inexpensive. The food is mostly good, and, although the menu is limited, prepared to order and tasty. The owner is warm and congenial, and runs the kitchen and staff in an orderly fashion. The Worst - Throw every good thing I said out if the owner isn't there. On multiple occasions, my food was badly burned and full of floating oil. My husband got chicken when he ordered lamb, and the cook argued with him. The owner seems to be there on week nights. (You'll know he is there by the quality of the food). Great experience overall... Probably the best Indian Food so far, in the Dallas area. The food had great flavor and I will go back again and again. Be careful, the spice level can be hotter than expected. I ordered a level 2 and it was extremely hot. I got the lamb Korma and Chicken Maysala along with some chicken Samosas... When I want Indian and I'm in the neighborhood, I'll stop by for some veggie samosas and chicken Korma, my favorite Indian dish. I think it's not the best Chicken Korma I've ever had. When they say "served in a fruit sauce" on the menu, they really mean it. There's chunks of grapes, cherries, & pears mixed in the creamy almond sauce. I think it's a little weird and unappetizing but fortunately does not overpower the dish. They also seem to put oregano in the sauce too which gives it a whole different flavor than I'm use to. Extremely good service for a Indian fast food restaurant and the workers from the cashier to the busboy constantly want to make sure you're enjoying your meal. The naan comes to your table piping hot. Their platters are a good deal if you want a taste of everything. It comes with a samosa, a small entree, a vegetable dish, and your choice of dessert. I had heard some pretty good things about this restaurant, but compared to other great Indian restaurants outside of the Dallas area... Roti Grill does not compare. The first time I went to Roti Grill, I had Aloo Baingan and the potatoes tasted like they had been cooked a couple days before and reheated, borf. The most recent time, I had Saag Paneer which was pretty good but still didn't taste the freshest. I do like how you can choose your sauce and your protein, though, and the naan and paratha are good! Another plus is that you get really good portion size for the regular sized price, but if the quality of food isn't that great, why bother? The thali size appears much smaller than other Indian restaurants that I have been to, so it's probably not worth shelling out the extra cash for it. They also sell beer and wine if you're interested in that. All in all, you get a large meal for what you pay for, but the quality is just not there. I'd rather drive outside of Dallas to get a worthwhile Indian meal! read more
