Memories from our dancing night on Cedar Springs keep circulating in my mind. It wouldn't have been half as fun if we hadn't gone to Round-Up Saloon. Basically, this place made my night. Dancing, drinking, people-watching. This place has it all. We were in here before eleven and things were slow. Pre-twelve o'clock is when people check each other out, flirt heavily, buy each other drinks, chat in groups, and basically enjoy great company. After a couple drinks, we went out to Sue Ellen's, but came back here around twelve. After twelve, this place is craaazzzy! The center turns into a hot and sweaty mess of people jumping up and down, breathing heavily on each other, and shaking their booties! It's generally a repeat of Brittany Spears, Rihanna, and Beyonce, kind of like in one giant loop, which is perfectly fine with me because I love those girls :P There is a mixture of a thousand different people from all types of lifestyles. Gay, straight, lesbian, taken, single, transgendered... you're certainly welcome here. I hope the experience Hayden E had was never repeated again :( That makes me sad that something like that happened, especially at a place like this, where all people should be welcomed, no matter who they are. After last call, the lights turn on and a lot of people clear out. But one of my favorite things ever happened. They turned the country music back on and couples sashayed in the middle, swinging partners 'round and 'round. It's amazing to watch so many people in the middle, rocking back and forth with their partners and everyone, literally everyone, has a smile on his or her face. This place is amazing. To date, it is my favorite gay bar I have ever been to. It gives every single person, regardless of their sexual identity, gender, or age... a place to be themselves. read more

I hate giving this place 1 star, because I used to like coming here, but recently one bouncer has started harassing me at the door. Each time I go with a group of friends he stops me and quizzes me about my ID. I get asked to recite my birthday backwards or my expectation date, which I have no clue about. It happens each time that the last time I told him I'm tired of the hurdles. I'm 31, not 22 or 19. So I walked out. It's to bad since that was the only place on the Strip I liked. I lost my Fitbit today and realized after 2am. While other closed businesses either let me look or looked for me, management here was unhelpful and turned security on me. The security guard then treated me as though I had been unreasonable and no business here. Unfortunately, of course my property is lost for good no matter who helped. It is clear last night's manager provides no customer service when they patrons cannot spend money. Had the manager took 45 seconds to step in and even pretend to look for me, or if he had been nice, this would've ended differently for Round Up as I am a stickler for customer service. While I likely cannot stop coming here, I will no longer be spending my money here. If you're just looking for a bar to serve you drinks, great. If you're looking for a bar with people that actually care, go elsewhere. read more

I've been a regular at Round Up for eight years and it is probably the only gay bar in Dallas that I find interesting. I do have to complain, however, about the manners of one of their bouncers recently (who I won't name here because I am disappointed, not spiteful.) I understand entirely the need to clear the bar at closing time each night. However, there is no need for approaching your customers in a brusque manner. I'm habitually polite and soft-spoken 30-something professor who just likes an occasional drink out with friends. I'm never belligerent, hostile or ill-mannered. It is just not in my nature. Nevertheless, as I was finishing the last few sips of a beer (and it was only, at most 2:02AM as this was happening), this bouncer barked "You have to go now." I replied, "Just about done here." To which he barked even louder "No, you have to go." I muttered quietly (I thought) to my friend "That's a little rude" which was overheard, but instead of recognizing it as a private comment between me and my friend, the barking gets louder and more snide. (The exact words were immemorable.) Lets just point out two basic things here (1) Sometimes its not what you say, but how you say it that matters. And immediately launching at your customers with an aggressive attitude is not only bad manners, but simply unnecessarily. (2) We paided you for our drinks. A couple minutes leeway for us to finish consuming the product that is paying your wages is probably in order - unless we are really lingering way past closing time. Some context here: This was also the end of the night in which the GLBT community around the nation was celebrating the Supreme Court gay marriage victory. Is it really appropriate to end the night by disrespecting those of us who were out celebrating that major historic event? A better approach? How about "Hey guys, we've got to close up now, can you finish up quickly?" A good rule to live by might be: if you aren't talking to your customers in the same way you'd treat your family members or friends, then something is wrong. read more

Nothing makes me feel more at home than a crowd of gay men singing Shania. Luckily, the Round Up loooooves to make me feel at home. Man, you feel like a woman... Between the 75 cent drafts on the patio served up by the shirtless cowboy or the kickers boot-scooting to Lady Gaga, I can't imagine this topsy turvy place any better. I see the look of fear in a gay man's eyes when he thinks counnnntry. You think Hee Haw, Jesus on a tractor...think again, darlin'. This place is the most happening spot in the Gayborhood. Even as straight lady (or a gay man in a lady's body...whatever), I have a fantastic time. I will echo the fact that the ladies' room gets a little cramped but after helping Drunken Peggy Jane undo her belt buckle, you realize that close quarters mean quick friends. SHOTS, LADIES?! i have a confession to make: gay cowboys are the CUTEST people on EARTH! a friend's sister and i came here on a saturday night, and the place was packed with cute gay cowboys! so we made our way to the dancefloor, and they were all two stepping to some crazy-ass western music, where i promptly cooed and squealed. then, all of a sudden, the overhead lights dimmed, the disco ball dropped down, and the electronica disco music filled the air. it was LINE DANCING TIME, Y'ALL! well, friend's sister and i tried to get in on the fun, but damn these gay cowboys. there must've been a memo circulated about what songs and dances they'd be using, because THEY ALL KNEW THE MOVES! except for us, of course. * sigh * still, a TOTALLY fun experience, especially for a californian in the middle of texas! read more

ahh, round up. round up is one of those places that you just fall in love with. then you start going there every weekend. and you always have fun. but after awhile it starts to kind of wear on you, and you decide you need to take a break. and it didn't help that one of your friends got kicked out for stealing a cigarette from the manager when she thought he wasn't looking. so you take a break for a few months, and you go back. and you realize why you fell in love with it in the first place: there's always a drunk chick celebrating her birthday by singing dixie chicks songs. the bartenders are nice. the drinks are decent. and there are cowboys. you also realize that your friend deserved it. Go after midnight...that is the best time for music on the weekends. The bouncers are jerks and think they are high and mighty. But the atmo makes up for the rudeness. Been going here for ohhhhhhhh 5 or 6 years. Always a good time. Karaoke is entertaining....but I do not have time to sit...I go to wiggle on the dance floor just like Beyoncé and I have plenty of fish to pick from. Had a great time. Met a lot of great guys and girls. Dancing so much fun. Some of the staff seem to dislike and be a bit rude if youre a female. The worst problem was the bar. First went to the bar in the back by the patio the bartenders were really nice and quick we go to four drinks an drink wasn't paying a lot of attention to them being made but once we'd got them they tasted alcohol free. So we went to tequila bar up front and stood forever . It too kind forever bc it's one shirtless bartenders right at the door. We very literally watched him make drinks and he'd scoop ice and grab a lot of water up with it then he'd add pineapple and hand it off.......nothing else. He did it that way the entire time so I ordered shots instead of a mixed drink and it's was fine. I'm not happy that we paid like every other person in there for drinks we didn't get. The women's bathroom has three stall seats but only two doors. That's creates a line. The guy at the door you couldn't tell had a problem with us right when we walked in and was rude. The rest of the staff was great even when they didn't make our drinks as ordered so I still tipped well the whole night. It's a fun place place. read more

I'm not sure whether I'd like this bar if it were packed. Empty (on a thursday night) it wasn't all that exciting but I can say that the bartenders were really friendly and sweet. The four other people in the place were dancing around on the dance floor, but it was mostly straight couples so not particularly fabulous or entertaining to my eyes. If I could give them no stars, I would. They are very racist. I literally tried to order a beer and they threatened me and kicked me and my friends out. Said we looked like we were waiting on government meals when we work in the hospitality industry and know what it's like. The manager defended them. I planned on having my birthday party there but now I will never attend. I will definitely be calling headquarters. They kicked my white friend out for defending us. The bartender and manager were very adamant about making sure we had their names because they didn't care whether we reported them for racism or not. The Round Up Saloon and Dance Hall or otherwise known as simply "Round Up", is a high energy, friendly LGBT country and western bar/night club. I've been coming here for several years and I love to two step and country line dance. It's a fun atmosphere and the people and staff are friendly. There are plenty of bar stations so getting your favorite beer or cocktail will not take very long. Let me just say this is a country and western bar that mainly plays country music, however the music does switch to dance and top 40's after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday's they usually have 80's music going on. I love this place, and will keep coming back. The only con is because most people don't know how to two step or line dance they tend to jump out on the dance floor with no etiquette. Those that do know how to dance have to dodge them to avoid running into them. Same goes with the line dances, the line dancers like myself will do turns and kicks and often strike some of those that have had a little too much to drink by accident. Please be mindful of the dancers. Also note, No Drinks on the dance floor are allowed!!! I've had to tell many to get off the dance floor because they spill their drink on the wood floor which makes it difficult to dance on even after it's been wiped down. Other than that! I've been to all kinds of Gay clubs and bars when I lived in LA, but I've never been to a Gay Country Club... Until now! After coming here, all the clubs back home don't even compare. First off, this place is huge! There's several different rooms for dancing, karaoke, and drinking and socializing. Drinks are moderately priced for being a bar the Oak Lawn area, and the jello shots are also yummy! Try one! Second, there's a really good mix of people--men, women, gays and straights. And third, everyone is so friendly and drama free! It doesn't get any better than this. My favorite spot in the club is definitely the dance floor. They play a good mix of music that make up both Country and Top 40 genres. Of all the bars I stopped at during my night out I had the best time here and so did my BF and our friends. My most memorable moment of the night was getting gay-sandwiched by my friend I came with and some random guy, who was like 7ft. tall and as big as a linebacker. He was practically shaking his ass in my face and grinding up and down on me, and I'm only 5'4" so you can only imagine how hilarious it was! He knew how to drop it like it's hot and he let everyone know it. Towards the end of the night the DJ also played "The Wobble" and everyone--my friends and I included--got down on the floor and started dancing. I was surprised how many people actually got up and did it because I've never seen anything like that in all my years of clubbing LOL. It was like a dance sequence you'd see in a movie. I have been coming here for years but recently had a bad experience with a bouncer that was completely unnecessary and uncalled for. Just a bully pushing his weight around because he could. I sent an email to the management and they didn't care enough to respond. I haven't been back and have no intention of going back. Love it! I heard that the Round Up used to be ridiculously unfriendly to women (requiring they have a male escort and wear a skirt) but that the new owner is different, and, yep, we were warmly welcomed. So, ladies, let that stereotype go and get yourself down to the Round Up. The first night we stopped in was Wed of the Out & Equal conference and so they had changed format from CW to a typical gay male dance club at about 11 PM. Came back Friday for CW dancing and it was a ton of fun. Lots of folks knew what they were doing (which I love) and there were also a bunch of beginners too (also great). Good music and the crowd was courteous and relaxed. It was mostly guys with some women mixed in, and the owner, Gary, was very friendly and came up and talked to us for a bit. The guys asked us to dance, and they were largely good dancers. The dance floor was a bit slippery (easy on the talc, cowboy!) but it was fun, fun, fun. Random items: *Drinks were inexpensive. *They could use a coat/boot check, but we managed okay. *They played the video of Lady Gaga stopping by for an impromptu visit/performance -- neat. *And to address the one-star Yelper who was upset that the clientele didn't know the El Paso couples line dance, I want to remind everyone that line dances are largely regional. The dances done in California are different from those in Texas, are different from those in DC, and even the same dance has variations depending on where you are. And there are hundreds of line dances. Most folks don't know all of the ones in their region even. I love country bars and where I'm from there are some but not as good as this one. Had an awesome time here. My "gay husband" had been wanting to take me here for ages but our schedules conflicted. Well thank goodness we found time to get together and come here! So many beautiful people! So many good dancers! And the music? Omg. It was a classic saloon feel with a big dance floor where people can crowd around the edge and watch with envy (like me). They offer dance lessons early evenings on certain nights, which I will be attending soon, as well. The drinks weren't over priced, and were good and strong. This was a fun bar! Hands down!!! I am a straight girl and I had a blast here! Crowd was nice and friendly, and the dance teacher was sweet. I literally do not know anything about line dancing... except for electric slide (shame...) haha. I'm more of a hip hop/house kind of girl. So, I obviously stood out on the dance floor because I was lost, out of rhythm, and clueless of what the steps were. But hey, no judging, crowd was nice! I made it in time for Juanita's dance lessons. We did the two-step which was really fun. And finally, they did line dancing, which was even more fun!! I looked like a complete fool, but it was fun learning the dances. I am pretty sure I threw some people off their A-Game because I was so off. Come by and get some free dance lessons. They have Karaoke almost every day in the Parlor with a separate room for playing pool and the a huge room for dancing! This can't get any better. This bar is a cozy place on Cedar Springs. It's somewhat cliché with the all country theme, but the bar tenders add what lacks in the ambiance. I've been going to this bar for over 20 years , I love to 2 step and socialize with my friends but over the years the whole scene in this bar has changed drastically. While I realize that you have to cater to the crowd to make money , they have taken a lot of liberties to make it too clickish . From expensive renovations that make it look more a dance bar than a country bar to adding more and more drag shows and benefits. It seems like the people that manage this bar would rather it be a dance bar like Studio 4 than a country bar. I've already heard one of the lame night managers mentioning that he'd like to see it that way. Both owners who are very sweet men in their twilight years will no doubt retire before long and I think if they sell it to the wrong people or person , you can say good bye to the Roundup as a country bar. read more
