It was a very hot day in Paso Robles. We had reservations for lunch at the 12:00 PM sitting. It's a small venue only room for 16 around a curved bar. We walked in to a freshly poured glass of Cold Champagne and a Glass of cold Marsanne wine. Our first course of cold purée squash soup, really hit the spot on a hot day. 2nd course chilled curry shrimp paired beautifully with the 4 more Champagne as With the next course (see picture) also cold, mozzarella cheese, with a spicy tomato sauce and sun dried with an olive oil dressing. The flight of 6 (100 point) Bordeaux wines came next with a filet of beef with lentils and freshly made olive bread. The last course cake was lemon curd and fresh raspberries. We had the chance to experience a private evening at Somm's Kitchen with a group of 10, and it's one of those dinners that sticks with you long after you leave. From the moment we walked in, it felt less like a restaurant and more like being invited into someone's passion project. The intimacy of the setting made it special right away--small group, shared experience, and a level of attention you just don't get in a traditional dining environment. Each course was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented, but more importantly, it delivered. The food was the clear star--clean, intentional, and incredibly well-executed. We decided to treat ourselves to an evening at Simms kitchen. I believe there were about 16 folks in total. This private dining event with wine parings is quite the unique experience. Ian really shared his passion for bringing people together through delicious dishes and wine pairings. There were several bottles I had never heard of before, the food though was truly the star of the show. Great portions and just very clean dishes. I wish we heard a little more about how the wines paired/highlighted the dishes or perhaps what else might pair well with the wine if you were opening at home. I wish I had a better description to share with the attached photos of the food. Everything was prepared with such care. It was hard to pick a favorite dish of the evening but it'd have to be a toss up between dessert and the steak and mushrooms. November 28, 2025 Ian does an amazing job of teaching us about wine, and feeding us and sharing wonderful wine with us! It is always a great time! Not like a typical wine dinner. He pairs the food to the wine instead of pairing the wine with the food. Only 16 seats per night. You have to book in even numbers because each pair shares the plate of food. He puts so much thought into each dish. Some of the food prep is done days ahead of time. He gets a lot of food on his travels and shares it with his patrons. This was an amazing experience. Me and my girlfriends went here for our girls trip. Ian was so informative about the wine, and the food was mouthwatering. Ian really takes the time to educate you about the wine, why he likes it, and also really emphasizes that wine is a personal choice. We made reservations for Valentine's Day knowing that this would be a very special dinner. Ian did not disappoint. The Champagne and wines served with our meal were perfect pairings. We were there for approximately 2 1/2hrs of wonderfulness. Ian is such a fabulous Chef and his knowledge of wine is incredible. I am posting pictures of some of the items we were served, but I was enjoying the food so much, I missed getting a couple of pictures. Ian's food is very different, delicious and fabulous. What an amazing experience we had visiting Somm's Kitchen ! We drove up from Los Angeles and encountered some pretty hefty holiday traffic and fog. Needles to say , we were going to be late for our lunch reservation. Ian who runs the business kept in touch with us prior to our arrival inquiring about any specific food allergies that we may have. We notified him we were running late. He was so kind and offered to host us the following day instead, which worked out well. Our options for wine were different, as we had reservations for CA reds. The wine options the next day were different. Ian included some champagne which I truly enjoyed. The accompanying dishes he prepared for us were delectable ! My favorite was the tomato soup and prior to this , I hated tomato soup. I'm so glad I tried Ian's version of tomato soup. It was so creamy, yet he doesn't use cream. It is a speedy outing, but I feel it is 100 % worth it. Reservations are tough to come by , and now I know why. Planning in advanced is the key. Hoping to return soon. read more

I won't be able to capture the fullness of this experience in written form, but here is a shot. You feel something different from the moment you walk in. How many restaurants have you been to where the chef greets you as you walk in, is rolling his own playlist, and then you sit in the round and watch the plating? The most incredible part of this place is how personal Chef Ian makes every dish and every pour. You should head to Somms Kitchen if you really love food and the process. This isn't a place for those who just do it for the 'gram. There is no menu but here is just a small sample of some of the great dishes we had: - Peppers sous vide for 72 hrs with beans from calabria - Blumenkasse cheese steeped in French onion soup - A 'day at the beach' featuring Brittany lobster stock - 'Creamy' tomato soup with no cream And then, of course, there is the wine. My technical vocabulary is going to be insufficient here but let's say that I've never had better pairings. He explained all of the dishes and paired each one with wine. We got to try many different kinds of wine from all over the world and he talked about each one. The six of us felt like bon vivants during this downtown Paso dining experience. Each Chef Ian hand selected wine and plate was magical, and of course paired beautifully. I don't remember the names of everything we ate, but everything was inventive, and interesting in a very good way. Sous vide preparation style was new to me. We had a triple cream brie; cheese stuffed date; wood planked cheese... I know I'm not doing any of these justice; I should have written down the names. We had a tomato dish that put sun dried tomatoes to shame. I ate slower than I've ever eating, savoring every bite and sip. We had the most tender salmon with a butternut-spaghetti squash puree /soup, and, a melt in your mouth rib eye. When you think it can't get any better, you're served an exquisite dessert that was truly four desserts. There was a sweet risotto with coconut milk, candied pecans, an orange like no orange I've ever eaten, and cocoa covered almonds. We never felt rushed. What to expect: a communal dining setting for 14 guests where Ian (the owner and our fellow hero) explains each wine he serves along with the dishes he's created to pair with each of the wines. Ian is a true wine expert and works with the US government, plus countries all over the world to share his passion and knowledge of wine. He makes wine approachable. Even if you are a wine expert yourself, you will learn something from Ian. Highlight dishes: the salmon and lentils, the recreation of French onion soup cheese, and the "deconstructed" s'mores with orange. Not all dishes will be the same every meal, but I hope everyone is lucky enough to enjoy the dishes I loved most. Tips for making a reservation: do your best to book 3-5 months out. It was full for me 2 months prior to booking, but I added myself to the waitlist and it actually worked! Somm's Kitchen is one of the most unique restaurants I've encountered. The overwhelming majority of restaurants offer a chef's tasting menu where the wine complements the food; this restaurant takes the exact opposite approach where the food complements the wine. This in and of itself is what entices the foodies and winos to check this place out. I've partaken in a few fine dining experiences all over the world; the main draw about the overall experience is quite opposite of anything I would expect in a starred Michelin or "World's 50 Best" listed restaurant. Keep in mind that the restaurant is a one-man show, aside from a staff that helps keep things tidy Ian is the host, chef and most importantly somm. He also owns the place and has a lot of control in both the restaurant's vision as well as the business operations. So with that being said, my expectations for this place are lower than a restaurant with a full kitchen staff. I've done the standard chef's tasting once and I had a pleasant time and was willing to come back here for future visits. Food is rather simple compared to other fine dining establishments but the main draw is the wine education. The main reason for the low rating is for what was going to be a second visit to the restaurant. Long story short: reservation got cancelled 2-3 days of the scheduled event and I wasn't notified. There was no apology nor attempt to make up for the reservation via Tock, email or text. Luckily I also had other planned activities in Paso that weekend so my trip wasn't ruined just because of a cancelled reservation. Towards the end of the year I also placed an order through Tock for a bottle of wine but there was no acknowledgment of receipt of the order much less an arrangement of me getting said wine. I'm going to chock this to a great first experience but horrible second experience to the point where I don't want to associate myself with any future dealings with this business. One of the best meals we've ever had with a very unique experience. Intimate setting with around 16 people there for the dinner and only chef Ian serving. We left stuffed and were pleased to have tried each of the wine and spirit offered. My husband is still talking about how amazing the donut was at the end and we aren't super into donuts! We also had a bisque that was so thick and creamy but didn't have any cream. pictures of the food just don't do it justice. I've been to many wine pairing dinners and this one was by far the best. Our first trip to Paso was 2019 (from FL), and Ian recommended some wineries that we hadn't tasted yet. Since then we worked our next visit (2023) around getting two spots at Ian's bar top! It was fabulous! My favorites included the creamiest (cream less) tomato bisque, the pheasant sausage, and French onion soup cheese - but every bite was creative and amazing! And that's just the food! The wine pairings were out of this world, and came with an education as well - 14 bottles for 16 people! Worth every penny!
