I kind of like that you order at the register with no need to leave a hefty tip since there is no actual staff waiting on you. If you want anything like ketchup, you get up and get it yourself. I ordered the breakfast biscuit sandwich. It was a 3.6 out of 5 stars. The biscuit was perfect. I enjoyed the egg, but I found the sausage to be a bit dry/dense and lacking in moisture. I don't think it came with a sauce, which would have helped it not feel so dry in my mouth. After I burped, my throat burned a little from it, and I'm not sure why. I get that same reaction with beef burgers, so maybe this sausage isn't 100% pork like I thought I ordered a gigantic slice of cinnamon roll. It was a 5 out of 5 stars. Better than Cinnabon. No hard bits. It was all soft, ooey, gooey, goodness, without being too sickly sweet. Hot chicken and waffle is Delicious!! BUT, the holes in this SCANT waffle, not cool. It needs more girth and this dish would be a 10/10! I really enjoyed this diner. It's such a cute space and there's plenty of room. You order at the register, find a seat and someone brings the food to you. The grits were really good but they were lukewarm (which is why I took away a star). For the price they charge I was definitely expecting hot grits. Well I tried it.... I finally visited a place I have been driving by but never noticed was there. Roux is in the location of U of C, old 7/10 split. The place is decorated with nice wooden everything. It is simple elegance in this setting. You come in and meet the cashier who takes your order before you sit for a meal. Here is the rub, if you've never been here and if there is a line you better hurry up and decide what you want. But let's say you have been here and you decide you want to come back, you better have an idea what you want especially if there is a line. The second rub (for me) is the paying and choice of giving a tip before any type of service. I usually tip 15 to 20% at a restaurant. It just makes sense to me to tip for service. However, at this place the service is the absolute minimum. My order was brought to me but after that NOTHING! NO how are things, how is the food, are you ok, do you need anything. They are happy to take your money but then ‍‍‍‍. I mean that's fine but I left a tip for someone to bring me food they had to do anyway. THAT isn't service. If I came back here I wouldn't tip. For what??? The Food....is simple. There menu explicitly states what is take out and what cannot be take out due to freshness. I like that. Who wants cold terrible Shrimp and Grits??? Now I did order the Shrimp and Grits. It was tasty but could that be because it was swimming in butter?? I think you can make a cooked shoe taste good if you bury it in butter. The Grits themselves were stone ground and that was apparent in the texture. But don't come here expected to get full. The portions are stingy especially for Grits. A shallow plate at $17 is excessive in price for what you get. I also had an order of bacon. It's BACON, firm crisp and not greasy. It isn't in me to be harsh about this place. It is nice but don't expect much for your hard earned money. Maybe IF I come back I try something else. The jury is still out on a return. This review is a cautionary tale of an experience lacking in any hype. If you are ok with slightly elevated prices, bare bones service in a nice environment with decent but slightly loud music (possibly perceived this way because the place is mostly empty as i sit here) then ROUX is the place for you. As I think of it my only return is likely in the form of coming with someone who has never been but otherwise I would move on to something new. This would be a great place for U of C students to convince visiting parents to come and separate them from a few bucks. So there! It is possible I am spoiled and expect a little more for my money (to many im an ass so there is that too). Let's give that a strong possibility but you can come to your own conclusion if you visit. It can be a long line some mornings although there's generally enough seating - matched influx and efflux. Beignets (had to try spelling that 4 times) were great although both times I've tried them, I'm left wanting chocolate sauce. How can you serve beignets without some supplemental chocolate for dipping? I don't know why this feels like a rule to me. The avocado toast and tomato tartine are the primary veggie breakfast options and both are very solid and satisfying. No real veggie supper option. You heard it here first, Roux is the hottest new diner in town!! We stopped here on a Saturday morning after seeing their breakfast/brunch menu online and being completely sold by all the tasty options. The way you order is a bit different than most-- you walk in and are greeted by a cashier (depending on the day/time there may be a line) and you order your food and seat yourself. Once your food is ready they bring the food directly to the table. This place has so many great things plentiful tasty pastries, rich coffee; hot or iced, mimosas and a 5 star menu. The food here was top tier. I ordered the shrimp and grits, and my friend the brisket hash. The shrimp and grits were amazing. Creamy in texture, cheesy, good balance of bold flavor/taste. I admittedly was scraping the bowl attempting to get every last bite. My friend names the brisket hash was tasty as well. The bacon was the best bacon I had in a while, crispy, thick cut, maple flavor and paired with my grits well. My friend had their biscuit that I had to beg to taste after tasting-- I understood why he didn't want to share. It was flaky, buttery and the jam/jelly they served with allowed it to literally melt in your mouth because it was paired so well. I cannot wait to get back to Roux-- it's a MUST TRY! read more

Ordering can take a few minutes and the order taker also makes the drink orders at that time. The line can be out the door because of this system. Came here with my friend for a nice breakfast. We both ordered the three egg omelette. It came out real quickly! Great service. I ordered mine vegetarian (without bacon) and the eggs were fluffy, the mushrooms were flavorful, and there was a good amount of cheese. You get in line and order at the counter and then the restaurant has a station where you fill up water, get your ketchup packets, and utensils etc etc. there was lots of open seating when we got there at 8:45am on a Saturday morning. Found this hidden gem & wanted to give it a try. First things first, I love the ambiance & style of this restaurant. Very clean, vintage like & calming. It's not like your traditional restaurant where a server seats you and you are serviced throughout your dining. Upon arriving we weren't initially greeted by the cashier or given any instructions but nonetheless we seated ourselves & ordered at the register. For the food we had the Shrimp & Grits, Hot Chicken Waffle, the fried catfish & house potatoes. Everything was made fresh to order & we were serviced rather quickly. For the most part the food was pretty good - the fried catfish batter was different than what we're traditionally use to but again it was fresh. The shrimp were a nice size & very flavorful but after while the grits weren't it for me. For the beverages we had water lol, there is tea available at the front which you do have to pay for - but it wasn't anything homemade so I didn't understand that concept. This place is simply put together!! When you arrive there will be a line but the management is very friendly and they move the line very fast!! While you wait you can go next door to their sister's property and get a drink! The place is very cute and clean and the food is very delicious and seasoned!!! We had a party of 4 and we dined on Chicken and waffles- delicious, chicken cook perfectly! I would recommend putting the chicken on the side and not on the waffle since the chicken is hot-oiled-based! Awesome food but super long lines on a Sunday at noon. You can order at the register or order online and take home but the food is not ideal for waiting in a car ride (crispy fancy sit down food).  We waited for a couple minutes and decided to order take out while we were in line. We grabbed a picnic blanket from the car and ate at a nice area of the campus half a block away. This worked out and would definitely recommend as there's lots of nice areas around the campus and line would've been over 50 minutes.  Everything was delicious.  Got the fried green tomatoes, patty melt, quiche, and beignets. Tomatoes came on top of bacon, pimento cheese, a runny egg, and crispy bread. Confusing at first but my favorite, very rich and delicious. Patty melt was tasty with good sauce and grilled onions, came with fries that were seasoned and better than they looked. Quiche had tasty veggies in it and was very flakey.  Would definitely come back do the same thing, eating inside if the line is short, eating nearby if the line is long and it is nice out. read more

A true classic. With calm music playing, quiet background chatter, and the great smell in the air I knew this was the place. I got the cinnamon roll for breakfast and it was easily a top 3 cinnamon roll, perfect temperature and just enough food. A welcome surprise. I have a strong opinion that no restaurant in America can come close to NewOrleans/Cajun cuisine but I was extremely satisfied with the shrimp & grits here. Twas reminiscent of those big & bold flavors found only in the big easy. Also appreciated the huge portion of grits in addition the large shrimp. With those compliments aside the desserts didn't compare to my satisfaction of the food. Such a cute, spacious, and clean diner! A great spot for a date or studying. On a weekday around 11am, there's already a decent line to get food. You order at the counter, grab a number, and they bring you the food once you've sat down. I wasn't super impressed with my green tomato tartine. The cheese and bacon were very salty and overpowering that it was very heavy despite how small it is. We also got the beignet which are not comparable to the ones in New Orleans at all. Nice spot, ventured here with my sister from another mister ! It was Fat Tuesday, and in the menu are beignets. Roux , has me at Hello, was so excited ! I was told this was an excellent pick from another friend who raved about the biscuits. The biscuit if it's not a part of your meal ,it's 5 bucks for one that is outrageous!! I basically wanted to customize my order which came with grits and eggs and a meat product which was pork. I do not eat pork so I asked them to substitute the pork for some potatoes and it came with the beloved biscuit. I did get a little push back from the cashier but when I insisted and I asked for the manager he eventually agreed that potatoes are way less costlier than a meat product and let me substitute my order. But as I was told they normally do not do substitution but luck lady luck was on my side and I was able to sub and keep my order under $15.. Place your order, pay and then bring your number to the table and they will bring your order out. Kind of like corner bakery style. I thought it was a little funny that they asked for a tip at the counter when you pretty much just doing a lot of work yourself. The food was good and the biscuits were warm flaky and buttery. Love the concept of this place. The line moves very fast and the atmosphere is fantastic. The food is also gem. The rice waffle is so light and good it's hard to stop eating them. It's has a good amount of space, it can most definitely accommodate a large party and it's a great spot for couples as well. The menu is small. Wow, really impressed so far! I stopped here for lunch and it was beautiful and spacious but not so crowded when I came here. I hope they get lots more business, because the food and atmosphere is fantastic. Relaxed and casual, but intelligent, delicious, well-made food. I had the fried tomato tartine and it was divine. A wonderful breading on the tomato, delicious bread itself, crispy bacon, and a pimento cheese spread to add sharpness, spiciness, and creaminess to the dish. It's all then topped off with an egg that can deliciously ooze over the dish. For such a simple item and cafe-like atmosphere, I was surprised at the sophistication of the dish. I usually find breakfast food rough and too greasy, but I didn't fill that way for this. The person I was dining with also thoroughly enjoyed their food. But have sampled the chicken and waffles, pastries and biscuits. All delicious. Their coffee is good also, however I imagine most will be coming for the food. Parking can potentially be a bit tricky during busier hours, as well as a longer wait time. If you come during peak hours, expect to wait upwards of 15-25 minutes to order. Went here on a Sunday. The line looked overwhelming, however, it moves very quickly. Street parking was ample and in front of the venue. The venue is spacious so don't think it is going to fill up because of the long line. The food was good but not amazing. I had the hot chicken and waffle and substituted the waffle with their buttery biscuit. The hot chicken is 3 chicken tenders which I prefer the chicken on the bone and that to me is not worth $18. The biscuit was flaky and buttery, but looked like it was made with pastry dough. My friends had the omelette and potatoes, which looked really good. I also did the deviled eggs which was three deviled eggs (1 1/2 eggs) for $7.Tasty, but you can make them at home. I ordered a mimosa to drink, which was more orange juice than anything. The servers were attentive however, I am giving it a four stars simply because they do not have a la carte items and their cashiers seemed like there was little they could do. They don't have a chicken dish that is outside of the waffles and I didn't want the waffle. I just wanted the chicken. If they were to serve menu items à la carte, they could make more money. I was instructed that I have to go next-door to the bowling alley to get the chicken à la carte which to me is ridiculous. Anywho, the food is good but they could rework some things menu wise. The food is good but this would not be my go to place for brunch because they allow for little substitution and I need options. Roux. Where do I start. Nice neighborhood spot. Plenty of street parking but hard to come by. Once we finally found a spot a few blocks away no biggie since it was a nice day. I didn't know what to expect but heard decent reviews from fellow friends. You walk in place your order and get a number and a server brings your food to the table. Pretty much everything else is self serve down to the water. They keep a huge water dispenser where you can serve yourself. Wasn't a long wait time for our food. The staff was nice. Chicken and waffles were just ok. The chicken was seasoned exceptionally well the waffles even had a nice buttery flavor. I guess I was a little taken aback by how extremely thin the waffles were. For the price I felt they could've added just a tad more of batter. You can see straight through the waffle when you pick it up no kidding. I understand food cost are extremely high right now and understand these are Belgium waffles but I've had Belgium many times and never had a waffle literally fall apart so easy. Can't say much about the other food because this and a mimosa was all I had. I'd consider going back but I'm not eager to revisit anytime soon. Especially considering 2 waffle & chicken a mimosa and eggs cost $70. They also charge a "hospitality charge" at 3.5% rate. Which doesn't seem like much but as someone who works in the hospitality industry both front and back of house it sort of takes away from customers actually wanting to tip servers as they feel these charges compensate and make up for their usual tips.
