I really like this diner! I've been here a couple of times, and the food is always really good! I've had the shrimp and grits which is amazing and so flavorful. I've had the biscuits, croissant, beignets, cinnamon roll (omg), brownie, pecan pie, all very good but the cinnamon roll.. seriously! I've had the deviled eggs and the pimento cheese. The avocado toast is some of the best I've ever had! The patty melt is good, but probably my least favorite thing. The staff is always very nice. They're also very efficient and quick with the food! Came here for brunch with the girls and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I dig their set up! Upon entering you hit the register and you're able to order everything there. They give you a number and you find your seat yourself. Now it was pretty full when we were there but we were lucky enough to find a seat. I think people know it's a spot where you have to be courteous once you see others waiting, but this could be frustrating if you were looking to have a 90min brunch. Nonetheless this was fine with us as we were in and out in 45min. The food was pretty good - I got the biscuit sandwich which was very fulfilling and everything I expected. The biscuit was so soft and honestly perfect. Video shows what my friends also got. My friend allowed me to try her deviled eggs + beignet. The deviled egg was kind of bland.. it lacked something. The beignet - amazing - if I wasn't full I probably would've ordered my own to go haha. All in all a good place to check out! read more

Needed a brunch/lunch spot ahead of an MSI visit so the fam (me) wouldn't get hangry. Found this one through other reviews (thanks!) and just loved it. First, the butter. I can't believe I'm writing about it but at one point said, "this is the best butter I have had in my life." It was on the chicken and waffles we had our kids split. Very solid choice, they couldn't have the hot chicken, though, so wish I could have had a taste of that. My spouse got shrimp and grits, loved it. And I got the cold chicken salad and it was solid. And the beignets, can I start a controversial thread here? Or maybe it started. Perhaps they're better than Cafe DuMon in NOLA? There, I said it. Only downside, pricey for limited service but hey, I'm willing to accept it for the absolutely high-quality food. read more

Skip the deviled eggs. Pretty but WAY too salty! So was the brisket hash. It's a pass for me. Really enjoyed shrimp and grits. Creamy slightly cheesy. Cajun and slightly sweet. Eggs seemed fresh and good quality. The cinnamon roll is soooo good. Real cream cheese icing. Yummy!!! Surprised that OJ is not fresh squeezed. Overall I think it is worth returning to try more things. The line is to order your food and get a number You seat yourself and they bring out your food. Food comes pretty quick and doesn't appear to be a problem finding seating. There is a water station and place to grab to-go containers for leftovers. read more

this place rocks my socks. good food every time! the way they handle ordering and serving food is a little different than you might expect from a sit down place. it's very streamlined and efficient, just get in line, order and pay in advance, take a number, and they seat you then servers bring out your food. basically everything is good here. personal favorites for me include the grits and deserts. i've heard the deviled eggs are sinfully divine. pretty sure jesus mentioned in one of his sermons. off to roux now to meet a friend for an esteemed posse breakfast. the clientele tends to run diverse in age, background, culture, looks, you name it. this is one of the best parts about a place right in the heart of seminary row in hyde park. come here! read more

I've never tried grits before...WHAT was I missing out on? I got a bowl with caramelized onions, bacon and a cracked egg. This was plenty rich without the cheese and I ate all of it. We were in Chicago visiting family for Thanksgiving. My cousin took us to breakfast on a very cold( snow flurries) black Friday. The restaurant's atmosphere was very calm and relaxing. The menu was manageable with items. I ordered grits covered chunked and scrambled (cheese bacon and eggs). The grits were creamy, which I love! My cousin had the catfish with grits and shrimp, breakfast potatoes (shared), and a HUGE cinnamon roll (shared). The potatoes were smashed and cooked to perfection. The cinnamon roll icing is homemade and was not overpowering sweet. My husband ordered the catfish and a side of grits. The catfish was cooked perfectly and did not have a very fishy taste like catfish can have at times. My daughter ordered the patty melt with fries and beignets. The patty melt was juicy with nicely toasted bread. The food was delivered with a very short wait. There were no complaints from anyone at the table. Everything was hot and delicious. The beignets were still warm even after we ate our meal. We will be visiting again soon and will make this a stop on our visit. I wish I could order and have my cousin ship me a few things to SC :-). read more

My family of 8 ordered with ease, there was a huge family sized table in the middle of the restaurant available for us (thank God) because Roux is first come first served on seating. There was a long line of about 20 people outside when we arrived for Sunday lunch. There is not a waitlist. Just have to wait in line to order at the counter. It took about 30mins to get to the Counter. You don't have to worry about it being crowded and will be hard to get a table. Once you get inside the Roux Diner, someone will ask how many people is in your party and find a table for you. We ordered the orange juice, latte, and cappuccino. Drinks are decent as expected. The bakery was mouthwatering and I kept wanting to change my mind. I ended up ordering the Cinnamon bun, the Biscuit with warm honey, and the Beignet. The Cinnamon bun was moist, warm, and a little too sweet, but perfect for those who are into sweets. The biscuit was flaky and the least sweet of the 3. The beignets are a Must Have. Almost every table has a plate. The table next to us even had 2 plates of beignets, one for each person. I'm not a big fan of grits, but the Shrimp and Grits is one of their most popular dishes. The Chicken and Waffle was a little too spicy by Northern standards, but typical in the South. Definitely spicier than Popeyes. The Brisket in the Brisket Hash was tender and fairly lean. We couldn't finish everything, but they've thought ahead and placed carryout boxes up front by the exit. Service was quick and orderly. Free street parking was easy to find on the weekend. read more

Biscuits and gravy, buttery and soft with a light crunch. The gravy was lightly spiced and "delicious". Fried green tomato tartine was a bit too spicy but otherwise very good. I brought my mom here for lunch, since she lives close by. What an absolute disappointment! How is this restaurant getting 4 and 5 star reviews? Are these relatives and friends of the owners writing reviews? I ordered a plate of biscuits and gravy which were mediocre at best. The gravy was cold. The biscuits were average, but could have been better. They were missing that slight crunch on the edge. My mom ordered the beignets which, according to the staff, were made to order. What BS! They came out cold, and partially raw. Gross! The only reason they get a 2 star rating is the coffee. If you've been to the south, you will know this is not good southern cooking at all. read more

Love the idea of Roux. But I have a food allergy to eggs and diary. They have Avocado Toast and a side of mushrooms with the grits on the menu. I couldn't order the grits because they are made with butter. So I ordered the breakfast potatoes and asked for side of avocado and a side of mushrooms....willing to pay extra for both. They checked with the kitchen, the items are available and they said no, I could not purchase them. So disappointed. I was looking forward to coming here often. But this will be the last time. Delicious! Came here on a Sunday around 11AM so it was prime rush time. The line outside moved along. My daughter and I had time to review the menu online and each chose a couple of options in case our first option was sold out by the time we reached the counter. Luckily, all of our first choice options were available however we weren't complaining about option B or C! My daughter (teenager) got the classic breakfast with scrambled eggs (perfectly done, still wet and with chives), bacon, sourdough toast and breakfast potatoes. She loved it and ate everything on her plate. I had the fried green tomato tartin with pimento cheese on Texas toast with an easy up egg. Wow! I could taste all the ingredients and really enjoyed it! We also shared beignets. Not as fluffy as they are in NOLA but I'm not complaining. I forgot to mention that the food came out promptly. Maybe 10 minutes after ordering. And the service overall was excellent. Especially the man helping as host with the tables! Hands down we would come here again and definitely try different items. My only recommendation to the restaurant would be to try and have a coffee service and/or water, possibly some nibbly bits, for those waiting in line to order since this is an "order then sit" restaurant. read more
