I can't believe this place only has 3 stars. That is upsetting to me. We've picked up food here at least once a week since we moved to the area and everything we've ever gotten has been amazing. Their sandwiches are filled with meat and so good, especially the Friday special and the reuben. Their lattes are super tasty. Their bagels are great and, unlike another reviewer, I've found they keep quite well left alone in their bag... Like, still fresh 3 days later. Their toasted coconut donut is amazing. Their egg and cheese on a croissant is, for whatever reason, the best I've ever had. If you order the daily special sub, it comes with a side (haven't tried the macaroni salad but their potato salad is bomb) and a donut (again, toasted coconut is where it's at) for a very reasonable price. A lot of complaints seem to be able their pastries and for those I can't vouch (we are committed to Passion bakery in Sandy Spring). But definitely stop in for breakfast or lunch - you won't be disappointed! read more

I ordered the breakfast platter. Starting with the better items the salt bagel is OK and double toasted as ordered. The coffee is good and hot. The bacon is fully cooked and tastes OK. The eggs have a rubbery consistency and are bland. The cost was very reasonable but I'd rather pay more and get better eggs, and a better bagel. The service is good. The tables have crumbs on them first thing on a Sunday morning. If I go again I'll just get a bagel and coffee, and might call it 3 stars. read more

This place has been around for years, but recently (last 3 years or so) they've been under new management. It is your classic local stop, a place to take the kids after soccer practice or for a Sunday morning bagel. The bagels are great, duh it's a bakery I hope they can make great bagels- everything bagel is my favorite. They have a lot of pastries, guaranteed you can find a sweet treat you'd like to try. The dining area is in need of some major improvement. Old tables and chairs- not stylish, but more of the local bakery vibe. One stall bathrooms, again, could be upgraded. They have a large choice of bakery items. Just very pricey and not sure why ? It's not Bethesda and their bagels are sub-par to other good bagel places. The Italian cookies were good but at $14.99 a pound they should be out-of-this-world... good. Like Italian specialty shop good. The chocolate lace cookies were delicious. The Bialy was disappointing, hard and the onions were like completely falling off and there wasn't much on there. Also had a pastry with strawberry and cream cheese. It was fresh but not something I would go back for. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The portions on their pastries were a pretty fair portion but costly. Nice quaint little establishment with a wide variety of baked goods including pastries, bagels and donuts. They also serve breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches. Everything I have had was pretty good. Although the prices are higher than I would expect on each and every item. Just irritating so. I'm giving it four stars despite the price because of how good the baked goods are. I had the Napoleon which tasted pretty good despite a poor custard to pastry ratio. Well new ownership has taken over and too many changes. Prices have gone up and the quality of the bagel has gone down. Asked for an everything bagel and hardly any goodies on it, very little flavor. Also asked for the bagel toasted and it came out not toasted and very dry. This is the second time I have tried them since the new ownership. Not sure if I will return. New help is a little rude, I guess that is how they do it. Ellen we will miss you and everything you did for the community. Just stopped in to give them another chance. Not only are the prices higher, they no longer do a bakers dozen. They have come a long way since they first opened. Quality and service improved significantly. Location could still be a little cleaner. When staff not helping customers they are sitting down and using their phones. I hate seeing employees using phones when they can be doing other things. I run a retail business and we have a no phone policy visible to customers. Remember most important thing in a business is the customer, not your social media. Been a customer since the Chesapeake bagel Days. The newest owner did improve the cleanliness of the bakery from the previous Olney Bagel bakery (no longer see flies inside the case.) The bagels have always been delicious. Often the toasting is inconsistent , sometimes they come practically un-toasted at all. I love the oversized portion of cream cheese on a bagel, but wish they would add a low fat cream cheese option so I could eat guilt free. read more

This has been horrible ever since the ownership changed a couple years ago. The new owners are extremely cheap and rude. They don't give a baker's dozen anymore. Upon purchasing a dozen bagels and cream cheese I asked for 10 paper plates, as I was bringing the bagels to an event. They told me they could only give me one, otherwise I could purchase the extras. I would normally have asked to speak to a manager but I was unfortunately already dealing with the owner. After telling me there would be a charge he promptly looked away and started working with another customer. The plates were ridiculously low quality to begin with, not sure why they need to charge extra to cover plates that probably cost less than a penny each. The plastic utensils are also cheap, the knife is not even strong enough to spread cream cheese. Bagels are sub-par quality. It is too bad this is the only bagelry in Olney because I am certain if given a choice, others would not support this business either. read more

This review is regarding the atmosphere of this location. I have been a customer of Royal since they opened their location in Germantown many years ago, and was pleased to see them open the Olney location a few years back. It's always been a great experience going there but that has changed under the management at the Olney location. I was there Saturday 6/15 with my family, and we noticed the Father's Day Cookies. My wife wanted to know what DILF meant on several of the cookies. I could not believe this was what I thought it was and asked the young boy serving us. I was disappointed to learn it did mean what I thought. I told him it was inappropriate and explained to my wife that it was a vulgar acronym. If you don't know, don't google it or you will be linked to a lot of adult sites. My wife asked the young girl behind the counter about the cookies and she was visibly embarrassed and pointed to the manager who when asked about the cookies would not even face my wife and just said the were his best-selling cookies. Nice job Royal. Selling profanity laced cookies at a family restaurant. Does the dad of that young girl behind the counter know what you are forcing her to sell? If my daughter worked there you'd be getting a lot more than a bad yelp review. You should be ashamed of yourself. You are setting a bad example for the young people that work in your business, and putting your customers into the very unfortunate situation to have to explain the meanings of your vulgar mindset to their family. What you do on your time should not be brought into a community business. You can make money selling this garbage, but you have lost my business. read more

Staff is super sweet. That's about it. I bit into a chocolate cheese pastry that had mold growth inside. The friendly staff had no problem replacing it with a different type of pastry which was a almond macaroon. That was "ok". Coffee was "OK". Under new management. Now Royal Bakery. If they had the option, I would give this ZERO stars. It's obvious new management doesn't want to spend any money for this transition and that their main goal is to offer a low quality product and experience (if there is an experience) to make as much money as they can. Because they simply don't care or haven't given much thought to what they are putting out. Cosmetically, and only superficially, they've changed a few things on the inside: Put up some different pictures of New York City. Changed the color of the wall paint. Replaced the menu boards with similar cheap looking menu boards. Put up a sign of the Dietz Watson logo. Everyone wears a black t-shirt with Dietz Watson on it. Nothing else has changed to make this place look better, run better or smoother... more on this later. While we were in line, we saw a tray of uncovered donuts with 20 or so fruit flies sitting on the bunch. We mentioned this to the cashier and she said they knew about it and couldn't do anything about it... more on that later. My party of four ordered breakfast sandwiches on bagels. We went to sit down at a table and waited about 10 minutes for our order. It came to us in a brown paper bag smeared with cream cheese all over the bottom. Four sandwiches stuffed into an elementary school size brown paper lunch bag. It was a mess. I think they threw out all their eat-in trays and didn't choose to invest in a new set. Probably so they don't have to retrieve and clean them. On to the food: The bagels are stale. The egg (definitely not a fresh cracked egg) is smaller than a silver dollar. The bacon on my sandwich wasn't real bacon, the kind you fry up in the morning as strips. It was the processed meat kind that is then sliced... seriously paper thin. It had the texture of a wet napkin, no crisp. A sad excuse for a $4 breakfast sandwich. I don't go there any more, but McDonald's has better food than this! My wife ordered sausage instead of bacon and she felt like vomiting because it had that bad, foul swiney taste of really poor quality meat. I knew this was going to be bad after the first bite. During our meal, an employee came out from behind the deli counter and started offering free donuts to everyone in the sitting area. My kids looked at me and I let them take one each. Maybe this would help me feel like I'm getting my money's worth. They happily ate them. It was at this time that I thought, why would they be giving out free donuts? I asked my daughter to do a little recon and see if the donuts on the counter were still there. And of course, they weren't. So now, I've just fed my kids some donuts that were left exposed to a dozen or more fruit flies that had probably just laid eggs in them. Now, I'm pissed. WTF??? With what they did to the donuts, one can just imagine what they're doing in the back kitchen with handling and storage of food. Immediately, we contacted Am Ex to initiate a stop payment on the charge. This place is just beyond horrible. It's heartless without any idea on how to service food and please the customer. And just so this isn't 100% negative, the only thing positive that I experienced out of this visit was the coffee. It's a little better than before, but that's not saying much. Further thoughts: There's so much potential for a place like this. There aren't any other small business bagel shops within miles of Olney. After four months, they haven't even changed the sign on the outside of this place. That's Branding 101. And where's the grand re-opening? Although I wouldn't want to do that after the sad state this place is in... The flow from order to pay to pickup is nonexistent resulting in the same long lines as before. It's simple to just add an extra cash register to speed up the line. They should create a dedicated order kiosk, but don't have the savvy to do so as people taking orders are also prepping food. It's truly baffling!!! I'd like to go local, but won't ever be coming back here. Too bad BJ Pumpernickels isn't still around. As for now, I'm taking my business to Panera, read more
