Well, this was a soft opening? Since they have bought this business from the old guy, I wanted to try this place. The couple who was there was super nice. I have bought a plain cake doughnut and they gave me a free one. I also ordered the caramel latte smoothie. They didn't have the card machine and I had to use my emergency cash from my car. That was very inconvenient. But their great service made up for it. Doughnut was kind of greasy. I would try again when they set up the Apple Pay and the credit card kiosk. The previous owner was always really friendly and kind - he also was a proud sponsor of Entrepreneurship Launchpad, a program I help run for local middle/high school students, inspiring and teaching them skills to turn their passions into real community impact. This is a great spot to grab some coffee and donuts or buy a lotto ticket if you're waiting nearby for a car wash or getting your car fixed. They have those old fashioned fluffy donuts. I have ordered their glazed, bear claw and blueberry donuts. All pretty decent. The donuts are a bit on the sweet side for me and a bit doughy. But classic all the same. For those who are local, you know of Monterey Donuts in front of Fresca market that burned down a few years ago. This event lead me to my search for a replacement worthy of their deliciously decadent donuts. My quest lead to places far n wide yielding everything from $5+ each over the top one bite is enough donuts to just plain crap. My search was in vain until a neighbor had these donuts at a birthday party...I probably ate 6 at the party. No frills/ no hippy $5 donuts...just good old regulars here. Delicious. Like the donuts of my youth. Fluffy, light, not too sweet, very fresh. Cost is not too far from the golden, olden days either, unlike these ridiculous places around here that have insanely hiked up the simple cost of an egg, some sugar and flour (Read: $6 for a regular chocolate donut!?!? Owners are great. I just moved back to Pasadena and this is by far my favorite donut shop. You can taste the quality in their donuts. I highly recommend the chocolate and maple bars. Cute little dependable cash only donut/ sandwich shop. I'm partial to the croissant with turkey and mayo myself, but they offer a variety of sandwiches, donuts, egg muffins, blended drinks and boba. There's a little something for everyone. The location is great, to be honest. In the same shopping center, I can grab a quick bite, take a boxing class, get my tan on, get my nails/ hair done, and go grab a massage/ facial. Needed a quick bite before heading to LAX and this was where we stopped to get a bite. They had some bagel breakfast sandwiches available for $2.99 which included your choice of bacon, ham, or turkey with egg and cheese. I chose the ham option while my girlfriend opted for a cinnamon roll. Both the breakfast sandwich and the cinnamon roll were nothing really to write home about, probably can get a better version of either item elsewhere. I've never seen a donut shop that sells lotto tickets as well so I guess it breaks out of the mold with that. read more

I'm surprised at the high rating... the high rating is what keeps leading me back to this donut shop. I've been three times now, from early morning to late afternoon (which I think allows me an opportunity to give a fair assessment) and every time the donuts had an oily taste, which I personally don't like. I don't doubt that some people love this place. But if you're like me and don't like that oily taste that some donut places have, then this is not the donut shop for you. In comparison, places that I love that don't have that oily taste but instead the bread is fresh and fluffy: Leberry, Colorado Donuts, California Donut, Donut Snob, Donut Bar, Donut Man, to name a few nicer places. Places that I've tried that are more local that are ok (and don't have that oily taste but the bread isn't thaaaat great): Gladstone's, Tastee's, and Pronto. I've yet to find a local donut place in Pasadena that is really good though... so maybe that's the problem... I may update this review as I explore more. read more

First of all, its in the lovely city of Pasadena, CA. Pasadena, well most of it, is such an incredible place to be. Great food, great architecture, and beautiful scenery. Of all the doughnut shops to visit, Royal is the best on this street! Its in an little shopping area, with decent parking space. Don't mind the fake n' bake shop nearby, just go straight for the DOUGHNUTS! Don't bother with the surrounding restaurants either, Royal also sells sandwiches. They're very friendly at this shop. There's a girl named Sophea who works there sometimes, and she's always thrown in a couple freebies, so I leave her big tips. You can't miss her, she has really nice black shiiiiiiiny hair and is always dressed so cool, oh and you can't miss that big bright smile. She definitely knows her doughnuts, giving nutritional information on them that I've never even heard of. Such a special place this is...you'll walk away with more than just a doughnut hole. They would make me a green tea slushy with boba when I used to frequent, and I'm sure they'd do it again if I were in the neighborhood. Its a classic doughnut shop, they have the old school sign and the old school orange paint. The seating is the attached 4 square kind of design...very cute. Anyway, if you're in the area, before you stop in at Lucky Boys across the street, stop by for a dozen doughnuts. read more
